Sony Patents Controller With Deformable Buttons To Let You Twist, Pitch, And Feel Gameplay
Posted by fo1mock3@reddit | hardware | View on Reddit | 54 comments
Sony is experimenting with deformable controller buttons that can change shape depending on gameplay.
This could mean real tactile feedback for different actions instead of just vibration.
Do you think this would actually improve gameplay or just feel weird?
Exist50@reddit
Sounds like a patent that will never make it into an actual product.Â
Strazdas1@reddit
One of those patents that ensures no competition does it for next 15 years.
SemanticTriangle@reddit
Could they patent a controller that doesn't develop stick drift, instead?
callanrocks@reddit
It's called the Dualshock 2!
n0d3N1AL@reddit
The stick drift issues, I'm convinced Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are all deliberately in on it. TMR and Hall Effect sticks have been widely available for some time and are inexpensive, with no downsides. There's nothing to patent.
th3typh00n@reddit
The downside is that they last longer, thus eliminating the need for people to spend money buying replacements.

Defeat the main boss with a tittytwister.
FrivolousMe@reddit
They still aren't putting hall effect sensors into the controllers to make the joysticks durable. How is a "twist, pinch, and feel" interface going to hold up after months of playing?
MetaCognitio@reddit
Sony: JUST BUY ANOTHER ONE!!!!
Fit-Produce420@reddit
Ask yer mum.

This sounds awesome. The dualsense controller with adaptable triggers and advanced haptics is so so cool on a game like Astro Bot. Well implemented haptic feedback could really change games and make them feel "next gen"
kasakka1@reddit
The only problem is how underutilized it is in majority of games.
IPreferBagels2@reddit
Yeah, Sony's gotta find a way to incentivize 3rd party developers to utilize them more
repocin@reddit
I don't own a PlayStation so I unfortunately can't play Astro Bot, but the footstep haptics in FFXIV is some of the coolest stuff I've experienced with my DualSense controller. Incredibly immersive.
I've also been playing Arkngiths: Endfield quite a lot since its release earlier this year, almost exclusively with my DualSense because I love the haptics and adaptive triggers. They've done a pretty good job with them in this game.
It's by far my favorite controller out of all the ones I've tried over the years. Very comfortable to hold, good material choices all around, and packed with cool tech.
techraito@reddit
The only worry is durability. Kids are going to have a field day with stretching and twisting.
Frexxia@reddit
This will never see the light of day
Tech_Philosophy@reddit
I have no idea how this particular product will turn out, but it is high time more companies start experimenting with input devices again.
I want controllers that offer intuitive and natural feeling tactile feedback, I want gloves that allow you to feel the surfaces of objects from games, I want phones that allow you to feel the keys of an on screen digital keyboard so you can write a text message without looking at the screen like we used to do with blackberries.
NapsterKnowHow@reddit
Sony really putting Valve to shame on the controller front
superkickstart@reddit
Maybe if the competition is on how bad quality you can make your controller.
NapsterKnowHow@reddit
I own 6 Dualsense controller. They are all doing fine.
n0d3N1AL@reddit
Valve use Hall effect sticks on the Steam Deck because they actually care about their products lasting, unlike Sony
NapsterKnowHow@reddit
They do not. You're thinking of the Steam controller 2. The steam deck LCD and OLED still use sticks that can develop drift.

If Reddit still has free awards I will give it to this comment in a heartbeat.
mcilrain@reddit
Sony should experiment with actually having games.
Cookie_Masterson89@reddit
They consistently release some ofnthe best games every year.
Theyre the most awarded and nominated game publisher of the last 5 years
mcilrain@reddit
Awards such as “Shortest live service lifespan” and “Most genders”.
If the PlayStation division was doing well why was it moved back to Japan, are they stupid?
Cookie_Masterson89@reddit
Ah youre one of those xulture warriors. I guess we'll pretend they didn't also release Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Astro Bot, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Spiderman 2, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarock, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Sackboy, Demon Souls
Also just about to release Saros and Marvel Tokon and Wolverine coming later this year.
Nothing moved back to Japan
mcilrain@reddit
I didn’t play any of those, I only play good games.
Cookie_Masterson89@reddit
I dount yoy play any games at all. Too busy fighting culture was on the internet
mcilrain@reddit
Why do you care?
Cookie_Masterson89@reddit
I couldnt care less what tou do but at least attempt to inform yourself before speaking on a subject

You thought you couldn’t care less about what I do.

Sony is taking a big bet with this one….that video games will still be made by the time this is out
reddit_equals_censor@reddit
crazy stuff, when you think how much worse the immersion is by not having a constant 1:1 relation to your camera position in any free camera game.
as in a basic mouse will be more immersive than the best controller. i guess motion controls make it better, but you only use those part of the time for precise aiming and not constant.
now one can actually do permanent 1:1 camera control with a controller, but the control would be vastly different than anything, that sony would allow to happen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kerK52IRGjs
sony needs the controller to look extremely similar to previous controllers to not have people freak out about change and what not i guess.
just interesting to think how much more immersive mouse vs analog stick even with gyros added is.
rustoeki@reddit
The steam controller solved this 10 years ago with a touchpad.
reddit_equals_censor@reddit
no it actually did not. its approach while it was very innovative didn't go far enough if you compare it to the video.
the area on it was too small and the circle was not concave enough to truly be good enough to effectively replace a mouse, BUT arguably not their fault, because it was already VERY EXTREME vs other controllers and you can't just throw xyba out of the window completely and what not.
and just to be clear the steamcontroller 2 and steamdeck implementation of having at least 2 small thumbpads is certainly far better than nothing, but it just isn't far enough and get there no matter what.
the one thing i don't get though is why the steamdeck and steamcontroller 2 didn't make the pads concave. maybe steamdeck thickness concerns and them not wanting to have a full redesign for just the steamcontroller 2.
rustoeki@reddit
Combined with gyro it's the closest to a mouse any controller has gotten by some distance.
Strapping a mouse sensor to your thumb doesn't improve things because it's still limited to the range of motion of your thumb and now you cant press any other input. A mouse is good because it has a large range of motion, not because there's anything special about the sensor in it.
reddit_equals_censor@reddit
i mean the much more concave design from the video with as much area as the thumb can reach pretty much is still EXTREMELY limited compared to a 50*40 cm mousepad with a mouse of course,
BUT it has like massively more area than the steamdeck or the 1.steam controller.
getting you close enough probably to be ok.
and the sensor part didn't matter, but area maxxing what you can do with your thumb with the correct friction to have it feel and work ok.
what sensor the mod used is just what worked and was there.
if you were valve or sony you have the monies to design it very differently. like the same area and very strong concave design, but instead of the big thing on the thumb, just a small thing with some mousefeet material at the small end or sth, and the whole area with a massive concave design is a full working thumbpad. i mean hell sony could tune the friction good enough to work with just fabric on a thumb, or possibly even nothing like a standard thumbpad. nothing would be really hard, because of the introduced sweat problem as well then, IF the goal is to truly have a good enough input to get close enough to mouse.
the inverted mouse sensor with a big area below the thumb was just a great hack to make it work as a great mod, but not needed if one would actually make it a commercial product right.
rustoeki@reddit
It doesn't have a massively bigger area though. The white disc on his thumb hits the edge. When his thumb is all the right there's only the width of a steam controller touchpad to the left, that's the space he has to use, not the whole area.

Now I really need a Bully 2 so I can give nerds 'purple nurples'!

More stuff I have to disable and more components to drive up the price of the unit. I really hope they come out with. I just want inputs and the headphone jack, nothing else.

Surely with my drawing from middle school that matches this exactly I'm to be rich. Who wants a ferrari lambo? (next 3000 responses only)

I just replaced the thumb sticks on a PS5 controller. Jesus fucking christ.
