Does anyone else get annoyed that car drivers don't "read the road"?

Even the people that *have* been in an accident think that they’re above average drivers. Before my CDL days I got a ticket on my motorbike so I did an in-person traffic school (this was before the internet). First activity was going around the room saying why you were there and how good a driver we all were. Three of the forty people present were there for causing a head-on wreck by failing to yield while making a left turn, the single worst/most dangerous/deadliest situation possible, yet they all rated themselves as being excellent drivers

Pro tip for new and old drivers, get ear plugs for driving.

If you take the FL you’re gonna be kicking yourself in the bVtt every mile for not taking the KW. Take the KW. Nobody ever said that FL was “top of the line” but many *do* say that about KW.

How do you guys poop when inside the truck? I already have a pee jug , but then i realize I might also need to poop when necessary. Maybe a good disposable system will work for me. Can you show me your setup and how you use it?

Don’t laugh but \*my friend\* uses absorbent puppy potty pads to cop a squat on. Roll it up tightly and insert into a regular puppy poopy pickup bag, tie a knot, drop it out the window with backspin so it stays on the top step, and in the morning stick it on the catwalk where it conveniently wedges under the electrical connector behind the sleeper.

Here’s the thing, though- YOU are the captain of the ship and if you don’t want the crew onboard then he’s gotta walk the plank. If your boss won’t work with you on this then \*you\* should tell dude he ain’t ridin’ with you no more. Simple! You don’t gotta explain yourself, but if you do feel you must say something then just tell him it ain’t working out, see ya.

I used to deliver to a fruit stand/restaurant supply place in OR and one of the guys there’s main gig was working at Saia LTL for 12 or 15 years (sorry, old & forgetful) and he loved it. Note that they had manual transmissions though (me too!).

What happens if you run out of DEF? Will the truck stop ? And will it start again if you pee in the DEF tank ?

I did this exact gig when I started using an electric pallet jack (wearing steel toed shoes). I even had to reload midweek for later deliveries. It’s cool, it’s gravy, you’ll like it (especially only being gone for 4 nights).

Get a spill proof water bowl. I got one many years ago at a PetsMart. The sides angled in AND it had a top rim that curved back into the bowl so if water did sploosh up the sides the curved rim prevented *any* spillage. I bought puppy poopy pick-up bags by the roll and just kept a roll in my pocket. If your pupper is too big to pick up and put into/out of the cab then you’ll need a folding ramp you can store on the catwalk, but please don’t let them jump down cuz that wrecks their joints even if they can easily manage doing it. You are going to love this, I would never have stayed a trucker without a doggie with me (I went through 3 over the years). Be safe.

Proper gear selection is paramount. If you’re in the right gear they work *perfectly.* The mistake people make is cresting the hill and then going right to top gear. Then it’s “Whoa Nellie!” and stomp ‘em & smoke ‘em (the brakes, that is).

I’m always 80K# (reefer) and I run mostly in the PNW with a few trips to FL and McAllen, TX then back to the PNW and literally never touch my brake pedal on the highway or anywhere in the mountains. It’s all lower gears and my best buddy Jake. Off-ramps and around town are the only places my service brakes are ever used.

Man, I’m glad it worked out for you but I just could not have hanged with that, not knowing if the box was staying cold. I would have probably had a stress-induced nervous breakdown.

Yes, 4 airbags on the drivers only, and a big long-ass leaf on the steers (which rode better than the company truck I had just left with airbags all around), and 6 Road King shocks that made a HUGE difference (but sadly Road King seems to have gone out of business). Bear in mind that I never ever floored the accelerator, no matter what. Upshift early, downshift late (but decelerating doesn’t really matter as much), I was always thinking about how to maximize my fuel economy. And I do mean *always* hahaha.

Yikes! Holy moly that could’ve been baaaad. This reminds me of a story I heard way back when I first started driving and had a trainer for 3 days (that’s all, just 3 days). I asked if he had ever done reefer before and he told me that he and a co-driver had picked up a load of lettuce in Salinas to take to NY. They pulled into a truck stop for fuel and he told his partner not to forget to fuel the reefer while he went in to shower before going into Sleeper Berth. Guess what? Dude forgot to fuel the reefer and it freaking ran out. By the time it was his turn to drive again 12 hours later the load had spoiled even though he went straight to a truck stop to fuel up the reefer right away. They got to the consignee’s location the next day or so and the load was refused.

I could not agree more. Now they’re sticking in these “info panels” that only show a few parameters at a time *and* you need to page through them instead of being able to see everything all at once without having to move a finger. Plus (to me) these analog gauges are pleasing to the eye. If I’m gonna have something right smack in front of my face all danged day month after month for years on end *I want it to look good.*

Oh they are sweeeet. I am so glad that I bought one for my first (and second) truck. See, I was afraid that if I had started out with another brand that I would have been constantly kicking myself for not buying a better truck (“Dang, I wish I had bought a better truck, I wish I had bought a better truck.” kind of thing, over & over, mile after mile. Instead I bought the best truck I could find so I didn’t regret my choice later).

You can just *barely* see a corner of the clutch pedal behind the steering wheel, just above and to the left of the shadow you pointed out. It was mostly only used at a stop/start (and feathered a tiny, tiny bit to break torque when downshifting too).

Yes, you’re right, it was pretty grubby, but in my defense my back had gotten soooo bad I could hardly walk/move and needed a *third* back surgery soon after. Plus it had been sitting parked next to a cement plant with the windows cracked for a few weeks (I ran hard for a few months at a time and then spent a couple-three weeks at home in the redwoods. During harvest season I wouldn’t go home *at all.* Gotta help them farmers!)

They sure get better fuel economy, and fuel is the biggest expense so why not try to save money? (The money saved stays in *my* bank account instead of the oil companies.) FWIW I didn’t have those enormous air cleaners on both sides creating drag either and only the one exhaust pipe behind the top of the sleeper. Running 80K# constantly I averaged 7.0-7.1 mpg.

The T660 was my *first* truck and it didn’t have as many gauges as the T800 shown above. Nor did it have a “Smart Wheel” but I got tired of having to reach for the Jake brake and Cruise Control constantly.

Primary & Secondary brake air pressure, oil & water temperatures, oil pressure, fuel levels (and DEF), the two differentials and transmission temps, turbo boost, and the speedometer (revs not so much). My reefer also has an info panel that tells the fuel level *and* the temperature in the box (backwards so it reads normally in the mirror) and shows the status of the reefer unit (perhaps the single most important readout of all). Depending on the terrain and load these can all vary in priority.

I set it up that way. The stock one had stereo controls on one side and the cruise control functions on the other but I seldom listen to anything although I do use the Jake *constantly* so I put the Jake on the wheel (with a couple of momentary light interrupts on top of both sides to blink/flash other drivers when we change lanes).

This photo I took always resonates with me when I show people what I do for a living. All the switches and gauges makes the job look more complicated than it is.

I just bought mine: a 22 y.o. 32’ motorhome with a diesel pusher. Granted I’m old so the rest of my life might not be too long but my little doggie & I are gonna see some things, dat’s fo’ sho’. It’s in the shop getting serviced right now but then it’s hi de ho, off we go.

Plan on leaving my company soon. If I leave the truck and trailer at a truck stop near my home. Instead of a company terminal. Will that go on my record? Would that make me look bad in the eyes of another company?

Just wait for the road service. You don’t want to be slinging crocodiles all over the road and maybe hurt someone. Plus if you *do* get a ticket and an OOS on your MVR that ain’t good. BTW dualies are for weight distribution, not to serve as a built-in spare.
