“Other drivers do it!”

I hate that comment with a passion I don’t have an issue with most backs, but every now and then I’ll run into a tough one and I’ll get it in there. However, after I get it into the hole/ dock I’ll talk to the receivers and they’ll tell me how other drivers will ask for help ( and I know they’re not required to help.) but they’ll tell me they laugh and tell the drivers “ Other drivers do it all the time, figure it out!” And that statement while true, annoys the hell out of me because not all drivers are at the same level and some are still learning I so wish they’d stop saying it given the fact most of them have never driven a semi let alone a box truck. But that’s my rant that’s it, these receivers can be asses that’s all I got.🤣😂

First time I went to NYC I got lost, came in the wrong way and had to swing way out and block both sides of the road. The guy there said “you’re the professional driver, you can do it” 🤣 I had MAYBE 6 months experience at the time
BeenThruIt@reddit
Wait until you get to " We get trucks in here all the time".
HatedReaper@reddit
Happened to me once at a shitty shipper that was actually a metal dump yard called Schnitzer Steel in Washington. They made me go through every possible fucking bullshit until realizing I really couldn't do it, then they pulled out their yard goat.
Chocolateapologycake@reddit
Ya pickup trucks or tiny ass Isuzu trucks
MssMoodi@reddit
Yeah like a cobblestone Road in Boston going around a building with a light hanging out of it in it the next building has a air conditioner hanging out of it and then they've got a trash can on the corner of the building because people keep hitting the buildings
UhOhAllWillyNilly@reddit
Inevitably they fail to mention that they were referring to box trucks, not sleeper cabs pulling a 53.
StolenRage@reddit
Or day cabs pulling a 28 footer.
shadowmib@reddit
They dont know the difference
Ecstatic_Ad6888@reddit (OP)
That would piss me off, because I call ahead to check before I pull my truck into anywhere that looks sketchy.
homucifer666@reddit
Google satellite view is your friend. I wouldn't put it past a shipper/receiver to lie to me just to get me in there so their product can ship, but I can look at the bird's eye view online and plan where I'm entering, how to get through the lot, or determine that the risk of damaging my truck/their property is too high.
warwgn@reddit
And 3D view too, so you can circle right around the entire facility.

I use that as well, but sometimes it’s hard to judge.

I have a regular peddle run and inevitably when I take some time off my customers bitch and complain that the driver who filled in for me couldn’t drive or refused to back into their shithole of a location. I’ve been driving for 40+ years and on this run for 7 years so of course they think it’s no problem getting to them. I have customers I have to back into their residential driveways, blindside down alleys, back across 6 lanes of traffic, all with unforgiving 4 wheelers anxiously waiting. Each time I make it clear to my customers that the drivers are good ,qualified drivers,it’s just that their locations aren’t designed for highway tractors with 53’vans.
gamingtrucker1@reddit
City driver ltl?
Fine-Eagle4264@reddit
Most of my work is around the GTA(Toronto) but I stretch my legs the odd time.
tvieno@reddit
Then don't ask the customer how other drivers do it. If you want assistance or honest assessments, ask other drivers.

Yard dogs are the worst. "I just backed that in there it was easy."
Me: Muthafuka my cab is twice your length and double drives and longer front end!
MarmotWorldOrder@reddit
A yard dog got irritated I asked them to move one of the trailers double parked in front of the trailer I was picking up. I slid the tandems forward and there still wasn't enough room. A sleeper made pulling out impossible without hitting a trailer on either side.
Dave_Duna@reddit
"If it's so fuckin' easy, why don't you show me how? Oh, you don't have a CDL? Then shut the fuck up."
Of course, this is just in my head. But I've come damn close a few times.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
I ask them all the time. Then tell them to settle down and quit being so defensive about it, just a question
Ecstatic_Ad6888@reddit (OP)
I’m right there with you so close! But I say it my truck lol!
Rising_Awareness@reddit
Sounds like east coast to me 😒
Desperate_Fee_808@reddit
I don’t accept any loads till I look at the satellite AND street view..you have to know where the dock is upon arrival..I had to deliver to pro bass last week and on the second stop there was no sign for truck deliveries..I had to scale through the lot 🙄 like a mad man only for them to say “why didn’t you come the trainer route? It’s the next right”..well ma’am if there was a sign at the entrance that says “RVs and trailers next right” maybe I would’ve taken it but it doesn’t say that now does it?? Smh
Ecstatic_Ad6888@reddit (OP)
That’s the absolute worse!😭
longbongsmokehouse@reddit
I had a guy at a shipper ask me one time, “is this your first run?” All because I misunderstood how he asked me to strap the load 🙄 and I’ve been driving for 3 years
MarmotWorldOrder@reddit
I was training on a Walmart account. A stop in Kansas was difficult for me. I had to pull into the street to get into the dock. It was raining and I was nervous I was going to hit a light pole. The asshole Walmart employees make a passive aggressive (read cowardly) comment about how easy it should be because I do it every day. I wanted to say something but did something rare and held my tongue. Surely backing a pallet jack is just as difficult to learn as backing.
___GRUMPY___@reddit
That’s when you say “yeah that’s true same as some warehouses can get me loaded/unloaded and on my way in less than 30 minutes”
PanicRevRay@reddit
While working for a company that delivers to small restaurants and the 3rd or 4th experience of asking the people who work inside (as a newbie) i realized they're all stupid and have no idea how big a truck actually is. Sometimes they actually had a good line as to how to back up or get close to their building but most of them can barely drive park a prius in a box. You have to remember that
Ninja-Storyteller@reddit
I have no problem insulting myself. "They must be better than me!" or "I'm new."
I have no shame. Just lies.
Educational-Oil-4204@reddit
And when they agree to help guide ya in and ya hit something, whos faults it going to be? Yours but you surely wont be happy with them. I get itd be nice to have some help with backing into tough spots but if they know whats good for them theyre not going to spot ya and ya hit something and blame them.
highlyelevated_207@reddit
Hate it
warwgn@reddit
I absolutely hate the mentality people have. Like they expect new drivers to automatically have 40 years experience, the moment you get your license after graduating CDL school.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
I've asked for a spotter a few times over the years when it's some B's yard design and they aren't telling me from the start they help a guy a bit. I don't need to be guided in, just watch some blind spots and tell me to stop I I need to.
I've refused the load 2-3 times cause they made jokes or talked shit instead of agreeing to help. That's it, find someone else and deal with the customer that's waiting, won't be me today
oldgrumpytrucker@reddit
I love the " just pull in and turn around!" Turns out they were talking about a box truck, not a sleeper with a 48'. Lmao!
Rough-Instruction-29@reddit
I’ve seen guys back in here with doubles
bicyclewhoa17@reddit
I used to be pretty good at backing. Then i started pulling doubles and i back a long box maybe once a week now. I lost all my confidence and its like being a new driver whenever i have to do a alley dock type back.
