Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) Do's and Dont's?

Posted by Sisu_Peaks@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

A lot of people pass PIPs so don’t get too down. Just ask for clear areas of focus on the plan, nothing high level but more direct on what exactly you need to improve and then focus on those areas. Over the next few weeks/months gather evidence of you doing those thing that you can show to your manager to show your performance has improved in the areas of concern. And lastly make sure you ask for help if needed. If there’s a weak area that you just don’t understand or know the best way to tackle it, ask for advice, because it needs addressing.

What health issues do people in the UK seem to think are becoming much more common these days?

Posted by VisionInMidfield@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 114 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Obesity is way more common and is just going to get worse. It’s not discussed enough though because mental health has been prioritised so people have been told “big is beautiful” and there’s less stigma around being overweight now.

What was your turning 40 ‘thing’?

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

My wife tried something new every month after she turned 40 for the year. She tried crochet, painting, ran a park run, firewalking, gave blood, wild swimming, goat yoga and a bunch of other stuff I can’t remember now but she enjoyed trying new things that year.

Manager said "You are not a problem" when I asked if I was moved due to poor performance. What does this mean?

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Any sentence or statement that includes the word “bro”. Especially when it’s written down. When I see a Reddit post or comment with “bro” in it then I just assume it’s a 12yr old kid and give the statement no weight at all even though I know the term is now used by people a lot older than 12.

MSN messenger was awesome. You could just find people to chat with about anything. I made a lot of friends on there in my teens. But I completely understand why they shut it down though (they felt they couldn’t keep kids safe).

Is earning 100k as good in the UK as it used to be?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 97 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

That higher tax band is only on what you earn over £100k not your full pay. So if you get £105k a year you don’t get taxed £62% of £105k you gets taxed 62% of £5K. (Also im not sure if 62% is the accurate figure I’ve just gone with OPs example).

U.k Cat owners, are your cats indoor, outdoor or combination?

Posted by Fit-Choice2368@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 241 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Both. We have a cat flap and they can come and go as they please. I see them sleeping in the sun, chasing grasshoppers, sniffing the garden, climbing fences, watching the birds as they sit in the shade of a bush… there’s no way I would take that away from them because of my own fears.

Why do you “massively mark them down” for not reading your website? Sure it shows a lack of interest on their side but “massively marking down” someone who could be a perfect candidate just because they didn’t read about you first seems almost egotistical.

As a line manager I’ve had people ask me this in the past when it wasn’t child related. However if I hired someone who asked to reduce their hours “a few months” after starting I would say No and question if they were fit for the role we hired them for.

Why is it taboo to discuss your wages at work?

Posted by thunderfart_99@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 237 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

“I don’t get why it’s considered taboo…. I flipped a lid when I found out” That’s why. People get annoyed and want more money. Companies don’t want all their employees feeling they should get more money. Sometimes they deserve it, sometimes they don’t, but if a person finds out a colleague is on more than them then it often frustrates people.

It’s not choosing it over her though it’s just enjoying your own hobbies. I’m sure one night a week or an hour here or there you can play your PlayStation and she can do her own thing on occasion too. Being married doesn’t mean you have to do everything together all the time.

What’s the most paranormal experience you’ve had?

Posted by lamestaff@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 209 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Nothing too big but lived in a house for a few years and one week some bizarre stuff happened then never again. I would get up early and go to the gym. Every day I’d go downstairs, put my gym bag on the sofa, get a drink and leave. I did this one day and my then girlfriend messaged me saying “thanks for finding my earring”. Turns out she found it sat on the sofa where I would have put my gym bag but it wasn’t there 30 mins earlier when I left. The earring had been missing for months. It was December and we had tinsel hanging from the ends of the radiators. It kept appearing on top of the radiators without us moving it. This happened over the course of around a week then never again. One night the smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night for no reason. I jumped up and looked around and there was nothing. I went back to bed and it went off again 20 mins later. I took the battery out, put it back in the next day and it never happened again. So nothing huge but a few strange things in the span of about 7 days that never happened again.

Technically, yeah, it’s a flume but I’d call it a water slide. Flume isn’t a word I’d tend to use. Just like a know a path is a pavement but I’ll call it a path. Some words just feel more natural.

Knee operation 3 weeks ago. Employer asking me to go back into office. How would you guys resond?

Posted by Fantastic-Tap-857@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 24 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

First step is to make sure they’re full aware of your situation. They’re probably not. Next I’d get a new GP note saying I was unable to travel to a place of work. Alternatively I’d go in to the office for a day or two then claim it aggravated my knee and discomfort and take another week off sick, I doubt they will be rushing you back in to the office after that.

What are your views on AI? Good, Bad, Indifferent?

Posted by richbart1234@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 83 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

People who criticise it and say it “looks terrible” or gets things wrong aren’t accepting the fact that it is still progressing. You can look at AI now compared to 12 months ago and the quality is much higher so where will it be in another 12, 24, 36 months? It will definitely change the world as we know it because it can do things so much faster and companies will always want speed over a human touch. People can criticise it and call it AI slop but that changes nothing and it’s not going anywhere. I wish it wasn’t a thing as I believe we, as humans, will end up worse off because we will be less skilled and have less jobs and variety in our work long term but it’s here and it isn’t going away.

long term sick leave what was your experience?

Posted by thereadingbee@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 26 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Worst case scenario - How long have you worked there? If it’s less than two years they could let you go. They could claim you’re not fit enough to do your job. More likely scenario - most companies do actively try to help their employees in these situations as they don’t want to have to rehire and train new staff so just discuss it with them openly and it will probably go much better than you expect.

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

I’m all for it. I know ultimately people are worried that they can be tracked in daily life and their movements be recorded on some government system but I feel that is far less disturbing than people being stabbed, mugged and both physically and sexually assaulted which are all things that would decrease if this was in place on a wider scale. Sacrificing some privacy and freedom for a safer society is worthwhile in my eyes.

What do you do to prepare for house robberies?

Posted by Legal-Razzmatazz1055@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 120 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Deter them in the first place. Block the garage door with a parked car, video doorbell, other security cameras on the property even if they’re fake, burglar alarm on the outside of the house even if it’s fake again, keep a key in the lock on the inside at night so it’s harder to put anything in from the outside etc… Most break in will be opportunistic and they won’t target a house with visible cameras and alarms and difficult access.

On the contrary I have and for many years. I’ve hired graduates and I’ve managed graduates. The truth is some people, like yourself, think it’s impossible to get good money and bonuses without working yourself in to the ground and it’s just not true. Find a good company and they won’t take advantage of you like that. When you’re older and more experienced you’ll understand.

Why are you swearing? Interesting you mentioned context as you missed the whole point of OPs post. Their specific question at the bottom is around children not showing empathy and when this is concerning or just boundary pushing behaviour of kids being kids. “Parents abdicating responsibility” isn’t answering OPs question at all.

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

I completely agree a lot of parents are just not keeping a close enough eye on their kids or even don’t see bad behaviour as a problem because they’re kids. The majority of the time I see this is because the parent(s) have their nose stuck in their phone rather than actual parenting their child so I don’t think it will change anytime soon.
