Never been able to pass the manual driving test due to essential tremor. Is it worth learning and attempting at least on automatics?

Posted by Lovecraftian666@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 142 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

I’ll be honest and a little blunt here but if you get tremors in your legs when you get worked up, should you be driving anyway? We all have close calls on the road sometimes whether it’s our fault or other drivers and if that happens and you get tremors you’re endangering yourself and others. Unless the tremors are in one leg I don’t see why an automatic would help much. Many many people get through life without driving though so while it’s a nice to have it’s not a necessity and I feel you’re being too harsh on yourself. Would you look down on an epileptic for not being able to drive? I wouldn’t and yours is a medical condition just like theres.

Is there parking etiquette for street parking outside houses?

Posted by manic_panda@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 87 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

You’re being overly sensitive. You admit you don’t own that part of the road so they’re not breaking any rules. Try to see the positive, if you have a regular car parking there at least you know who it is and where to find them if you need to.

What is the reason for most Cafes closing before 6pm in the UK, especially in London?

Posted by Plum_Plum_Tea@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 7 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Years ago a footballer from Spain joined a London club and said he was homesick and bored because “England closes at 5pm” (or words to that effect). It stuck with me because it’s completely true and as an Englishmen I wish it wasn’t. Yes there are pubs but there’s more to life than pubs. Even shops etc.. are open later in some parts of Europe.

What's a good city/town to visit in the UK for a 3 day trip?

Cambridge is an easy train ride from London. You can go to the free art museum, a zoology museum, sail down the river in boats, look at the impressive architecture, visit the market square and shops.

How important is something being 'against nature' to you?

Posted by ThePeake@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 54 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

We sit in houses made from resources we tear from the earth in factories we pollute the skies with. We breed animals to kill and put in our fridges and eat them. We fly around the planet in metal tubes and drink alcohol altering our mental state. Most things we do are “against nature”. It’s a useless argument in our world.

What’s the worst place you have ever been on holiday?

Posted by honeymeadowss@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1574 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Not a holiday but I went to Barcelona for work and stayed a few days and hated it. The taxi driver refused to take card when I arrived. It was 10pm at night and I could not be arsed to argue for 15 mins about it. We went out for lunch and the waitress rolled her eyes at us more than once and never even considered smiling. A used a shop round the corner from my hotel and the man wasn’t behind the till when I wanted to pay. Home came over after I got his attention and seemed pissed off I was even there. I paid for my things and he threw my change on the counter and just walked off. There were other things too but overall it was just a crap few days. I will caveat this though by saying I wasn’t in the tourist area and was in the more business side of the city but it’s put me off going back.

They’re most likely just being thorough. Also you need to remember that ticking all the boxes doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily get the job. Maybe your desired salary is too high for example. Or equally if you’re “already doing the job” then they might think you’ll get bored and leave in six months. Just be patient and see what happens. If you take it to heart now and pull out you’ve guaranteed yourself no new job. If you just wait and see then you may still get it.

I know someone who has a friend that does couples therapy and the therapist said to her once: “If a couple tell me they don’t argue then I know there’s no hope for them as there’s no passion in the relationship” Which is the biggest load of bollocks I’ve ever heard and can’t believe it came from a trained therapist.

Maybe you’re helping out two teams or doing responsibilities previously done by different people. Going round saying it’s news to you and posting on Reddit on literally your first day is just not helping. Talk to your manager tomorrow and go from there.

How much butter do you use on a sandwich?

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

Yeah. There’s zero gain for… 30 seconds of my life? To get the butter, butter the bread, put it back and wash the knife. 4 sandwiches a week that’s 2 mins. 104 mins a year. Do you want to spend 1 hour 44 mins of your life buttering bread every year? For maybe a tiny improvement in flavour? No thanks.

How precious are you about set meal times?

Posted by TieSea3723@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 119 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

I basically never eat breakfast because I’m not hungry for a few hours after waking up but lunch and dinner are roughly around the same time. 3pm is a very odd time though. It’s not lunch or dinner it’s just in the middle of the day. People should keep in mind though that our bodies don’t have to eat three times a day, that’s just become a social norm which is easy to do in the world we live in but our actual physical bodies can cope with eating less regularly because when we evolved there was no guarantee of food so our bodies can cope with going longer times without food. During the Industrial Revolution and common work patterns it became easy to eat three meals a day but it was never a necessity. Equally the idea that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” was created by marketers (Kelloggs I think) and nothing to do with science or health.

Can anyone recommend a UK fitness sub?

Posted by RodneyTheArmouryGuy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 5 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

I admit this isn’t answering your question properly as it’s not UK specific but r/JeffNippard is good. Jeff is a YouTuber but his videos are all around education, scientific studies and form etc… so he isn’t your typical Gym Bro trying to get hundreds of likes on TikTok he is actually useful and educational and the sub Reddit is a reflection of that too. It’s good for asking questions and learning a lot. Also, it’s one of the few subs that doesn’t really allow progress pics which is great in my opinion. Almost every other fitness sub is just fills with people showing off their bodies.

Job progression, how to cope with fear of failing?

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

This is very common. Even incredibly senior people in their field suffer from imposter syndrome. Prue Leith mentioned she had it a few months back throughout her career. The reality is that nobody goes in to a new role and knows everything immediately. There will be things to learn and things that go wrong but that’s all part of taking on a new role. None of that means you are not ready for it or unprepared. Just ask yourself if you’d regret it more if you didn’t go for it than if you did then you’ll know what to do.

Just let the police know. You can do an online report if that’s easier. They may suspect you and they may not but they won’t have proof either way. They could just as likely have had one of their customers rat them out to the police or a policeman visited the building and noticed a smell or anything.

I have been made redundant, struggling to find a job. Any tips?

Posted by Repulsive-Cheek811@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 15 comments

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit

1. Remember this is likely not your fault and just the crappy job market. 2. Amend your CV slightly for every job you apply for. 3. Look for key terms in the job adverts and make sure these are in your CV. This will help you get past AI scans of applications. 4. Apply for jobs you’re 80% qualified for. Not every company wants the perfect candidate and may still be interested in you. 5. Apply directly to the companies website where you can rather than Linkedin or Indeed or whatever. Often you can post the job description you find on the job site in to Google and it will find the advert on the hiring companies page and you can apply directly.
