Do you apologise if there's no intent in your actions?

I struggle with apologies, especially if it's not my fault. I recognise the difference between me being the cause of something, even if it wasn't intentional / was accidental though, and that this needs an apology - something still happened because of me. What I don't generally apologise for is when things happen outside of my control, especially if I tried to mitigate them and they still happened anyway. A real example being, I used to pick my son up from babysitters and take them to meet my wife at a swimming lesson, who would already be there with our other son. She couldn't take them both as there would be no one to watch one whilst the other was in the pool (very young, you get in with them). I'd have to finish work early - like, mid-afternoon, to do this, so it was no small feat to achieve. Maybe 25% of the time, due to the various locations of work, child minder and pool, I would end up being late, due to random traffic, accidents, or whatever. I couldn't just 'leave an hour earlier', because if there WERE no incidents, which was 75% of the time, I'd get there way too early, and would have lost another hour's work in the process. Apparently, I should have been apologising for the times I was late. I never made this point, but really if anyone was due to apologise, it should have been my wife, for booking a swimming lesson at a stupid place at a stupid time...but that's another story. So - long story short, I don't tend to apologise if I've not just not done anything wrong, but also if I've actually tried to pre-empt problems and just ended up hitting more problems anyway. I don't apologise just to make other people feel better about circumstances I was just involved in, rather than actively caused. That's my failing as a emotionally stunted person, and I genuinely do accept that :)
