Going to public school in upstate NY we had a cross-country ski/showshoe unit in gym, had a trap shooting team, tapped maple trees to make syrup, and raised chickens. Is this common in other parts of the US?

How do you feel about this jury duty?

Posted by Axxtr@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 199 comments

QueenShewolf@reddit

I've served grand jury duty for a month, which is where you decide if a case goes to court or not. It's not regular jury duty where you're in a court room deciding if someone is guilty. It's a lot of down time, and 85% of the cases were DUIs, which makes it boring. The rest were robberies, followed by assaults both physical and sexual. It's really best for people that have a lot of free time, like people who are retired. I was so pissed that I had to serve because I was pulled out from a job that I just started a few months ago. Since I worked for a small company that couldn't pay me for my service, the state gave me about $600 only to take $200 for taxes.

Are US Supreme Court Judges Cabinet Members Constitutionally?

Posted by manolosandmartinis44@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 63 comments

QueenShewolf@reddit

No. Cabinet members are directly picked by the president. The president can NOMINATE a Supreme Court Judge who is then approved by the Senate. This only happens when a judge's seat is vacant due to their predecessor dying or resigning.

Unless they're from an English speaking country, I actually prefer hearing their native language. I have a fascination with languages. Plus, listening to English all the time is boring.

Look up books that are candidates for being "The Great American Novel". Our literary giants are Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, and Ernest Hemingway. If you want a book from a different author about a story... ...that every American knows even if they haven't read it, read Moby Dick. ...how the American Dream is a facade, read The Great Gatsby. ...that explores racism in the eyes of a little girl, read To Kill a Mockingbird. ...of immigrants struggling to achieve the American Dream themselves, read The Jungle (just don't be eating while you read it!).

Any tips on how to drive in the US?

Posted by tlfluca@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 568 comments

QueenShewolf@reddit

With NYC, take public transport. Subway, bus, taxi...it's a way of life to travel that way, and actually easier. Or, just treat it like Italy, and walk. I've been to Italy twice, and all I did was walk in the big cities. As for driving OUTSIDE of NYC, experience the luxury of wide roads because your roads made me claustrophobic!
