What are your favorite US State shapes?

I find the rectangular shapes of Wyoming and Colorado to be quite cute. Tennessee has that "boat" shape to it, and the Michigan peninsulas are iconic, too.
wpotman@reddit
Minnesota.
Visually interesting with an arrowhead and northwest angle, but not random like West Virginia. A stately hat on top of the US. :)
DogeAteMyHomework@reddit
Fun fact: that little chuck sticking up on top, the Northwest Angle is accessible only by boat or from the Canadian side by land.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I appreciate West Virginia for keeping us from bordering South Virginia.
SewGangsta@reddit
As a Michigander I am compelled to say Michigan. How else could we explain where our city is if we weren't mitten shaped?
red18wrx@reddit
Well down here in Florida, one second...unzips...
Eric848448@reddit
Way better than Florida: America’s penis.
secrerofficeninja@reddit
I mean, you’re split in 2 though? Michigan “shape” makes no sense unless Great Lakes are included in the map.
DontReportMe7565@reddit
You make no sense.
secrerofficeninja@reddit
That “shape of Michigan”? It’s 2 different pieces. The lower part does look like a mitten as mentioned but there’s a 2nd part.
goblue2354@reddit
You use your other hand for the UP; turn it sideways with your thumb up and it’s close enough.
Haki23@reddit
The other part looks like a doggie
Ouisch@reddit
How many other states have a tourist area known as The Thumb?
dopefiendeddie@reddit
It would be so fucking cool to buy beachfront property in the Thumb since I could say "I have a vacation property in the Thumb."
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
Almost bought some last year.
JackStraw-Waukesha@reddit
Wisconsin kinda does
genuine_counterfeit@reddit
You Wisconsinites really have to let it go. You’re not shaped like a hand, you’re not shaped like anything, and that’s okay. Most states are nonsense shapes.
Dazzling-Low8570@reddit
More like a pinky finger.
Impedimentita@reddit
I call Traverse City “The Hangnail”.
Firlotgirding@reddit
What about the yoopers?
Copethishagen@reddit
We hold the other hand up sideways with the Keweenaw as the thumb
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
America's High Five!
ReedPhillips@reddit
vs Florida, which is America's penis.
Traegs_@reddit
Washingtonians do this too. We kinda look like a fist with the thumb (the Olympic peninsula) hanging out.
genuine_counterfeit@reddit
As a Michigander I am compelled to concur. ✋
splicey_@reddit
Also love our Great Lakes State ✋🏼♥️
BlueFuzzyCrocs@reddit
Being in the Wisconsin "Indian Head" we always used the eye to show where our town is
BrotherNatureNOLA@reddit
I think that Louisiana can relate. I grew up in the toes of the boot.
Motor_Struggle_3605@reddit
☺️
Meekanado@reddit
I like that’s it’s a mitten cause it gets cold here! You need mittens.
Little-Pixie-Belle@reddit
Fun fact, Colorado is actually a 697-sided shape due to various surveying errors
Ruthrfurd-the-stoned@reddit
Florida and Georgia had a huge territorial dispute because the surveyor was terrified of a native tribe so he just skipped that area, drew a straight line, and said sure that works
Was known as the McNeil line
PokeCaptain@reddit
Sounds like something the British would do.
Mountain_Man_88@reddit
Wyoming is too, no clue how many exact sides though.
Some_Rando2@reddit
Ohio is shaped like a shield.
The-one-true-hobbit@reddit
Huh, I always thought of it as shaped like a heart. Shield definitely fits though!
Luckypenny4683@reddit
Bias, but I’m quite partial to America’s Shirt Pocket myself
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I also enjoy our fancy swallowtail flag
Some_Rando2@reddit
Say what you want about Ohio in general, but our flag can't be beat.
Adventurous-Exam-719@reddit
It was considerate of Kentucky to make their state shaped like a Chicken Leg in honor of KFC
BubbleDoodles@reddit
I like Texas' state shape. It seems so iconic, and it clearly is loved by the people in Texas too lol. I remember finding out that they sell Texas shaped chicken nuggets and waffle irons in the state and thought that was really cute.
Kinetic_Silverwolf@reddit
When I moved to the Dallas, Texas area in the year 2000, many local folk were happy to inform me that Texas is the greatest country on Earth. They legit viewed the rest of the U.S. as an annoyance. 😅
BubbleDoodles@reddit
LMAO, yeah that seems like Texas. Their love and pride for the state is almost unmatched compared to the rest of the country haha. The only ones I think even come close is probably California and maybe New Yorkers (although New Yorkers are morse proud of their city rather than the rest of the state).
beenoc@reddit
I feel like Californian pride is less 'loud' than Texas. They're like "Well, if you're asking, of course California is the best state in the union, but I don't think about the rest of the states enough to really care that much." Texas pride is loud - they will make sure you know that Texas is the best.
wileecoyote-genius@reddit
I am going to mention Maryland in the state pride category. As a Texan, I feel obligated to appreciate my state, but those Maryland folk bring it from the heart!!
suffaluffapussycat@reddit
Often, their life and pride of the state comes from their ignorance about the rest of the country and the world.
Source: I grew up in Texas.
TXQuiltr@reddit
There are also Texas shaped cast iron skillets. Great for cornbread! 😋
Mueryk@reddit
There are Texas shaped paving stones and tortilla chips too.
snoweel@reddit
The paving stones that tessellate are nice!
TXQuiltr@reddit
Yup. And a lot of those Texas shaped items can be found at HEB, the grocery store with its own cult following.
Kinetic_Silverwolf@reddit
Never to be confused with Publix, the Florida based grocery store with it's own separate cult following ... and the better bakery.
BubbleDoodles@reddit
As a Floridian. The pub sub isn't just a sandwich, it's a way of life XD
WildlifePolicyChick@reddit
HEB is the bomb. Very good to its employees. Rare in these days!
the_real_JFK_killer@reddit
Growing up in thought waffles were always made in the shape you were in. When I was like 10 we visited family in ny, I was so interested to see how the waffles dealt with long island, only be to absurdly dissapointed by the round waffles I was given.
If I were better at making things, id make a nys shaped waffle iron. Still not sure how to deal with long island.
PlatypusDefiant991@reddit
You only need to cross a few hundred yards of water total to reach the mainland from Long Island I think it's okay to just cheat a little & have the waffle connect.
the_real_JFK_killer@reddit
It feels wrong tho
Pkrudeboy@reddit
Legally speaking it’s a peninsula.
sigusr3@reddit
Serve the upstate waffle with a Long-Island-shaped cut of thick bacon.
BubbleDoodles@reddit
Lmao this is a great idea
RandomRageNet@reddit
We love Texas-shaped things in Texas! Yee-haw!
Just don't ask us why we're shaped like this and not the original shape
unripe_mangosteen@reddit
I want Texas shaped nuggets!
TXQuiltr@reddit
If you have one in your area, you can get them at HEB.
patricknkelly@reddit
As a native Texan I agree! Always loved coming from a very identifiable and icon state as far as shape.
sigusr3@reddit
I once used a bathroom in a Texas McDonald's that had a Texas-shaped sink.
Maxxonry_Prime@reddit
Texas shaped waffles at the breakfast buffet is a sign you're at one of the nicer hotels or brunch spots.
super-space-time@reddit
The shape of Texas tessellates so you can use it for paver stones, tiles, bricks, etc.
Impossible_Jury5483@reddit
The Idaho Montana border resembles Nixon looking down to the left.

Massachusetts got a lil tail.
moonmoonboog@reddit
I grew up in Minnesota and always like the shape lol. Other than my home state I would have to say Oklahoma, big fan of the flag lol. I also like how Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana looks like a person with Minnesota as the top hat😆 just google MIMAL the chef/elf
Queasy-Extension6465@reddit
I like how our Minnesota jumps up and steals a piece of our sister Canada.
allflanneleverything@reddit
Maryland is a fun one!
Spirited_Voice_7191@reddit
I've always like the symmetry of the notches out of Arkansas. Especially the dichotomy of the TX notch being a only one of the overlapping states can be square, and the MO notch being river based convenience.
JudgePrimary4239@reddit
My favorite is Colorado. Least favorite is Wyoming.
ShakeWeightMyDick@reddit
Florida looks like a dick and I find that hilarious
Curious-Cranberry-27@reddit
Iowa. It’s a face.
BulkyTiger8706@reddit
Michigan honestly looks like the devs accidentally dropped two separate DLC maps next to each other and said “yeah this works.”
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
I always liked how the Hawaiian islands looked. Idaho, Texas, and West Virginia are pretty good.
Saruster@reddit
We lived in Hawaii for a while when I was a kid. On pancake days, my mom would make Hawaii shaped minis by drippling little batter drops. She adjusted the big island with the spatula while it cooked but the others were just circles. Then I would arrange them on my plate in the correct size order before drowning them in a syrup tsunami. My mom was the best
Foxy_locksy1704@reddit
I like the shape of Idaho, it just looks funny to me and I’m a little amused by it because of how narrow it gets at the northern border by Canada.
WahooLion@reddit
Louisiana - it’s shaped like an L or a shrimp boot
p143245@reddit
I love how North Carolina feels like it would sit in your handshake hand really well
EEJams@reddit
I like the chef holding a plate of Kentucky fried chicken on the US map thats made up of a bunch of different states. Technically multiple state borders making a picture but it's cool
Far_Silver@reddit
Hawaii. The only state where you make out the entire border from space, and boy does it look gorgeous.
No_name_Johnson@reddit
Delaware - it the only state to have a circular border.
JJfromNJ@reddit
Pennsylvania does too.
weeniehutjunior1234@reddit
Then technically so does the state it shares that circular border with, which is PA.
No_name_Johnson@reddit
I'm still going to give this one to Delaware, they get dunked on pretty regularly and could use the W.

Kentucky (non bias) cause it literally looks like a Key
good_sandlapper@reddit
South Carolina is the shape of a piece of pie; probably peach or pecan.
Neat-Ad11@reddit
I like the puzzle piece states, NH and VT, probably because I live in one. My home state has an arm extending out of it and my home town is at the “arm pit” but by no means is the arm pit of the state. AND it can be seen from space.
travelinmatt76@reddit
Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia are my favorite shapes.
theycallme_mama@reddit
Texas is probably the most recognizable along with California, Florida and Louisiana. Oklahoma being shaped like a pan with a handle is pretty cool.
SimoneSays@reddit
Kentucky always looks like a piece of Kentucky fried chicken to me.
chauntikleer@reddit
It will look even more like it if you consider it to be on a tray (Tennessee) bring held by a chef (Minnesota is the hat, Iowa the head, Missouri the torso, Arkansas the legs, Louisiana the shoes)
Jake_Corona@reddit
My 6th grade geography teacher used to call it “Chef MIMAL.”
ReedPhillips@reddit
I've always liked this picture
Jake_Corona@reddit
Kentucky being shaped like a piece of fried chicken is pretty cool, even though most Kentuckians will tell you KFC tastes like shit and we won’t actually eat it.
John_Barnes@reddit
I grew up in Ohio, which some say is shaped like a heart and some say is shaped like a shield
InUrFaceSpaceCoyote@reddit
West Virginia's "leftover land that didn't fit anywhere else"
lemonpepperpotts@reddit
I quite like that when I’d drive from northern Virginia to visit home or friends in Ohio, there was a non-zero chance I’d have to drive over the Maryland-West Virginia border 3 times
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Same. I'm from the Northern Panhandle of WV but live in VA now. So my trip goes VA - WV - MD - WV - PA - WV. And then we often go to OH while we're there too.
SDEexorect@reddit
mine goes MD - VA- WV- VA- WV.
lemonpepperpotts@reddit
I haven’t made that trip since my parents moved out to VA from OH (the part that’s more Pittsburgh and WV than Ohio), but it really is a charming drive. Occasionally you get to see Noah’s Ark

Lothar_Ecklord@reddit
That’s actually a phenomenal way to put it and I’m a fan of
secrerofficeninja@reddit
I like that driving west from Pittsburgh or south takes you to West Virginia.
realdown2marsgrrrl@reddit
WV is shaped like a great big middle finger to the confederacy
Impulse2915@reddit
West Virginia is shaped perfectly as someone flipping someone else off. It's poetic.
Morgueannah@reddit
I was raised in WV and when of people ask me where I can flip them off and point to the specific region. It's very useful.
ants_taste_great@reddit
I always found it looks like a pig butt, same with Michigan's UP.
PlatypusDefiant991@reddit
Fun fact: More live in parts of New York with tip of north panhandle latitude than in all of West Virginia: https://www.reddit.com/r/geography/comments/198jw6f/there_are_more_new_yorkers_south_of_west/

Wild-Bill-H@reddit
I like Massachusetts hook-like cape thing.
9inez@reddit
Being a Texan, I’m partial to the iconic shape…just not the politics within.
Massachusetts is funky fun. Alaska, Michigan, Idaho are interesting. Vermont and New Hampshire are cool as a couple. Louisiana’s boot works.
_gooder@reddit
I live in the dick of America.
red-yellow-leaves@reddit
Pennsylvania. I can hold my left hand vertically and point to the approximate location of where I live.
jda404@reddit
Holy shit you can lol. I am in my mid 30s and have lived in PA my whole life, never realized that nor heard anyone else point that out.
JenniferJuniper6@reddit
I like how New Jersey is kind of a miniature reverse California.
unripe_mangosteen@reddit
I like that California has the weird sharp obtuse angle where it meets Nevada near Lake Tahoe. I like Oklahoma because it looks like a pork chop, like I could pick it up by the pan handle and take a bite. And I love the weird spikiness of West Virginia.
Only_Presentation758@reddit
I like how NH is helpfully pointing at the way into Canada
Applesaucesquatch@reddit
Michigan mitten wanking off Florida cock n ballz

NY is a classic, it showcases that there's more to NY than the city. I like that VT and NH are yin yang states
WildlifePolicyChick@reddit
Yeah NH and VT are like, "Hey let's just hang and stay out of the bullshit? What say?"
grandmillennial@reddit
SC is a cute little heart shape! Also one of the more interesting state flags. There's a lot I hate about this state but we have those two things going for us!
Roboticpoultry@reddit
I’m biased but I love the shape of Illinois (I have an Illinois shaped coffee table and a tattoo of the state)
whitrva@reddit

Minnesota (and not just I-am-from-and-live -here bias). We incorporated a stylized version of it into our new flag (which doubles as the Mississippi River flowing toward the North Star).

I drove across it on I-40 once. Driving in & out of the various Native tribal alnds made me feel like I was making rapid progress crossing a big state. I was fully aware that this was an illusion, but it still felt so satisfying to see those signs.
Jdawn82@reddit
The Jenks Aquarium is nice lol
__The_Kraken__@reddit
My son had a great time at Science Museum Oklahoma! We also met some extremely nice people while we were there. (And I say that as a Texan!)
Jdawn82@reddit
I remember the science museum when I was growing up and it was nothing compared to what it’s like now. My first 7 years teaching in Oklahoma I was at a school that took the 5th graders to the science museum as a field trip and I always chose to go along. The only time I didn’t enjoy it was when the bus broke down about 50 miles from home and we were stuck on the side of the road for 3 hours until they could bring us a new bus.
thegamerdoggo@reddit
I like Florida, its unique, like a handle (we have a handle on America) but even though I don’t like Texas, I love the shape of Texas, no other state can beat the shape of Texas, it’s too iconic (only because Texans are wayyyy too proud of Texas)
FairBaker315@reddit
Pennsylvania, because you can make the shape with your hand.
Hold out your left hand, palm facing you. Bend your thumb and presto! It's Pennsylvania!
WildlifePolicyChick@reddit
I like Texas (I would I guess, being a native) but to me it has presence. There's a story behind every border, and no one is going to mistake it for anywhere else.
ppony2fly@reddit
Florida, because it looks like it's pissing on Cuba
Maxxonry_Prime@reddit
Don't do that. They've been through enough.
voltairesalias@reddit
I like how Texas actually kind of looks like a cowboy hat.

Missouri is just right (I have never been to missouri)
I like how Kentucky leans on Virginia
BeckyDaTechie@reddit
Missouri is very right leaning so that tracks. (I can't wait to move out of this place...)

New York, Louisiana, California, Florida, Minnesota, West Virginia, Nevada

I like how Missouri looks like a rectangle with a bite taken out of the side.
dmrose7@reddit
I like how Kansas looks like a perfect rectangle with a little bite taken out of the corner like a chocolate bar.
JohnBarnson@reddit
Massachusetts seems like it could be its own country, or maybe even continent, but on a small scale.
Oklahoma looks like a gerrymandered district.

Wyoming isn't a perfect rectangle
Florida is a viagara infused land mass

ElleAnn42@reddit
Ohio. It looks like how a 5 year old might draw the lower 48 states.

TheBigWhatever@reddit
Does it get any better than West Virginia?
glowybutterfly@reddit
Oklahoma. Panhandle looks neat. Mildly interesting history, too.
Jdawn82@reddit
It looks neat but it’s just miles and miles of flat nothing
glowybutterfly@reddit
Something kind of cool about that. I like that part of the US. Not to live in, but to visit. The sky there is mighty.
Jdawn82@reddit
I’m from a slightly less flat part of Oklahoma and lived in western Kansas for a few years, which is equally flat. It actually does have its beauty. Sunsets last forever and you can watch storms build for hours before they hit. Some of my best storm photography was in western Kansas and northwest Oklahoma.
Viscera_Eyes37@reddit
I lived in Boulder, CO for almost a year. Right up against the front range. Obviously very beautiful and this is a very minor knock but it wasn't that great for sunsets because of it. Looked like half the sunsets were behind the mountains.

Colorado is the same way, it has 697 sides.
thats-gold-jerry@reddit

I like the shape of Oklahoma. Something about a state with a convenient carrying handle is appealing.
Maryland is just bonkers, and there's something about that "we don't care what shape we are" attitude that I can appreciate.
dadofsummer@reddit
If I remember correctly they got the panhandle part because Texas wanted slaves.
esk_209@reddit
Yep. It was all about the Missouri Compromise (which banned slavery north of the 36th parallel). Texas gave up that That strip of land was ungoverned public land, subject to squatters' rights, for about 50'ish years (I think -- it's been a long time since I took Oklahoma history in high school). pinniped90@reddit
Michigan wins because it has TWO dope shapes.

Maryland is probably one of the weirdest shaped states. It looks like it happily claimed most of the bay and then was trying to reach out and grab more land to the west.
britishmetric144@reddit
In all fairness, Delaware got there first when it came to the Eastern Shore.
nowhereman136@reddit
Hawaii is the only US state boarder that doesn't have a (relatively) straight line

It's a little bit amusing in Georgia because the state is shaped very vaguely like a human torso. If you squint. So our seatbelt signs on the side of the road that say Buckle up! show a seat belt (lap belt and shoulder belt) buckled over the Georgia "torso".

2 favorites. I like Michigan lower peninsula being a hand and Florida being a schlong

I also use my other hand for the upper peninsula.

I don’t think I have a favorite, but Indiana is where I grew up (near Chicago). I feel like Indiana and Illinois are the most “state-shaped” states. This is likely because that’s where I was when I learned what the word meant, of course. But I’ll still catch myself thinking the rest are shaped “weird.”

I like Iowa. Reminds me of a squashed hexagon
