What's your thoughts on your regional chain?

Culvers, Buckees, In n Out, Wataburger, Tim Hortens (because they exist on the boarder), everyone has a chain that's pretty popular in their region but doesn't really exist outside the region. What's that place for you and what do you think about it?
OceanLemur@reddit
Dunkin used to be great. Now it’s a shell of its former self. Doesn’t stop me from going, but it’s not nearly as often as I used to.
superpony123@reddit
Man i found out the reason i never stopped loving dunkin is cause the one in my home town still bakes their donuts fresh. Im like why do these donuts suck everywhere else? Apparently that’s why
Sometimeswan@reddit
What town is that? I need to head there next time I’m in the area!
superpony123@reddit
Stirling nj!
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
Private equity bought them in 2005. I'm surprised they even still exist but absolutely twenty years later they're going to suck.
dj_1973@reddit
Time to make the donuts!
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
Yeah, that sounds right. I got it wrong.
dj_1973@reddit
I think Fred says “time to make the donuts, gotta make the donuts” in at least one commercial, so we are both right.
PoopsieDoodler@reddit
In the drive thru hubby ordered a “Dunkin Donut”. The employee asked, “Ok. What kind?” That went 2or 3 times before he said, “You know, the cake one with a ‘handle’ on it.” Yeah. They don’t have those anymore.
Responsible-Yam4748@reddit
That sounds amazing
_handlemewithcare_@reddit
Anyone remember devil’s food gone-glazed donut holes?
GimmeShockTreatment@reddit
Is Dunkin regional though? A quick google search is telling me it’s in 46 states. I know it’s sorta an east coast thing but there’s still plenty of them in the Midwest.
Sometimeswan@reddit
It started in Massachusetts and was regional only for many years. The quality has gone downhill as they’ve expanded.
GimmeShockTreatment@reddit
I guess so but I’m 33 and I can’t remember a time where they didn’t exist in Chicago. So I think it’s only regional in the sense that every chain was regional at some point.
jtet93@reddit
It is very much associated with Massachusetts in the public ethos. That’s why they have Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in their commercials. Like Portillos is in Florida and Arizona and California but everyone still knows it’s a Chicago thing and it will remain a Chicago thing as the chain expands
GimmeShockTreatment@reddit
I didn’t know Dunkin’ Donuts was an east coast thing until recently. Portillos will eventually stop being stopped being recognized as regional too once there are enough of them.
Responsible-Yam4748@reddit
Its not an East Coast thing its a Massachusetts thing. Youre technically right that its gone international, but its still heavily associated with Massachusetts, at least within the state. People here would strangle you for saying otherwise.
Silently-Snarking@reddit
It’s a New England thing
GimmeShockTreatment@reddit
I can understand that, I just think the “it’s a mass thing” extends as much outside of the state border as much as everyone is claiming. Like I said earlier they’ve been all around me for 33 years soooo…
shan68ok01@reddit
They were in Oklahoma 50+ years ago. They're also in the Philippines(ate a donut in one last year). Source: me, I'm a 57 year old lifelong okie and we've always had Dunkin's around. They're no more regional to Massachusetts than McDonald's is to wherever their first burger shop was set up.
Ryou4RealXD@reddit
In Massachusetts there are mutliple cities that have 2-3 dunks all on the same block. Like you can literally see them from inside the other stores. There is alteast 2 places in RI I know there are dunks you can see for eachother too lol Dunks might be across the country but Massachusetts/ New England is for sure its home lol
shan68ok01@reddit
Birthplace of a chain and it's still being "regional" are two different things.
SBognerAnderson@reddit
They have arrived in Minnesota.
Tsu_na_mi@reddit
100%. DD used to be goated and now they are trash. They used to have a wide variety of donuts, but now 80% of their donuts now fall into one of three categories -- contains chocolate, glazed, or iced. Yeah, you got 20 different donuts, but half of them are just vanilla iced, van iced with sprinkles, choc iced, and with sprinkles, glazed, cruller (fancy glazed), choc cake, boston creme, BC but with creme instead of pudding. You will be lucky to get 3-4 donuts that don't match one of those three traits. They used to have multiple fruit-filled donuts like lemon, blueberry, apple cinnamon, raspberry, etc. Now it's jelly and... that's it. They have an apple filled but it's got icing instead of cinnamon sugar coated and it sucks in comparison.
And their greatest crime was do get rid of the original Dunkin Donut with the handle (aka the Old Fashioned). It had nutmeg and a crispy outside and the plain donut they have now is like a Great Value brand version.
I would kill for a quality replacement donut chain that wasn't trying to be some gourmet bougie BS with $3 donuts.
Aromatic_Buddy_9931@reddit
They're toooo sweet to me now
wantonseedstitch@reddit
Yeah, when they were still a regional chain, they were great. When they went beyond that, things went downhill.
Apocalyptic0n3@reddit
They hit 1000 stores and 25 states in 1979. I remember their donuts being pretty good in the 90s and 00s. I don't think they're as good today, but I think your timeline might be off.
danhm@reddit
They stopped making donuts in each store 15-20 years ago and just truck in frozen ones from a central bakery now, that's probably what the guy is thinking of.
kirradoodle@reddit
I wish they had just stuck with making great donuts. When they tried to offer other food, they lost their way.
GoodDayMyFineFellow@reddit
I don’t drink coffee but my gf loves them and for some reason won’t let me go and not get something so I’ve been ordering their teas.
You know the string with the little paper logo on it that literally everyone who has ever had tea understands hangs out of the water? Twice now they have put that in the water with the tea bag. I was astonished the first time it happened and then we went to an entirely different place and they did it again. Just… how? How do you not know how a teabag works?
jtet93@reddit
Most likely it just fell in while they were filling the cup and they’re not gonna stop to fish it out in the middle of busy service and make a whole new one.
GoodDayMyFineFellow@reddit
No they didn’t even separate it from the bag. They just took the whole thing and dropped it in. The string was still glued to the bag
jtet93@reddit
Oh, damn haha. Well, Dunkin does employ a lot of teenagers 😬
Ok_Gas5386@reddit
The food and coffee is better at Cumby’s, and Cumby’s SUCKS
Justin__D@reddit
Also, I don't think I'm putting anything called "Cumby's" in my mouth.
Theomnipresential@reddit
It's what we call a local gas station/convenience store chain called "Cumberland Farms"
december151791@reddit
Their coffee sucks now too
inaccurateTempedesc@reddit
Bosa completely replaced them imo
Online_Discovery@reddit
Who's bosa, other than a football player?
inaccurateTempedesc@reddit
BoSa Donuts
AcadiaRemarkable6992@reddit
The donuts are now stale by noon
VisionAri_VA@reddit
There used to be a whole wall o’ donuts behind the counter; now it’s just one sad little case.
BoopleBun@reddit
All their coffee tastes burnt and none of them have peanut donuts anymore. I don’t think I’ve been in years though, tbh.
snarkwithfae@reddit
They used to be the cheap alternative to Starbucks. Now it’s the same price.
Gabriel_Collins@reddit
When our local Dunkin’s was going through a renovation, my family started going to Honey Dew across the street. The sandwiches and pastries are so much better. The coffee is not bad either.
brownstone79@reddit
I don’t even bother with that. The coffee at my local roaster is way better and about the same price. They don’t have a drive thru, but that’s fine with me.
Tron_35@reddit
The only regional chain in my area is a locally owned Mexican restaurant with 3 locations. Used to be my absolute favorite place to eat, but last year they raised the price of my favorite item. They had these great little tacos for 2.25, and I'd get like 6 if them, but now each taco is 5 dollars, which is just criminal.
BigEd369@reddit
North Carolina has Cook-Out. They’re pretty great, double drive-throughs, open very late, and have a broad variety of fast foods. Burgers, hotdogs, quesadillas, chicken, even chopped pork barbecue. And fifty-odd flavors of milkshakes.
helikophis@reddit
It's actually outside my area but I travel a lot for work. I love the "Love's" gas stations. They always have what I want and they have nice clean bathrooms. It's my preferred pit stop if I'm travelling in the areas they cover.
CardioTornado@reddit
Thank you for supporting University of Oklahoma softball. 😁🤣
Radar1980@reddit
If you love Love’s you’re gonna adore Buccees
_handlemewithcare_@reddit
Nope—overstimulating. I thought I’d have a panic attack (no exaggeration, but I haven’t had one in years). It was a weekday and I’d heard they had clean bathrooms. Yes, they did. But, it’s not a place for me.
MostlyChaoticNeutral@reddit
For a place so damn big, I really expected them to have more food options. The bathrooms are great, but the food options are sliced meat on bun, shredded meat on bun, fried meat on bun, sauced meat on bun, three meats on bun, other meat on bun, meat on longer bun, meat in tortilla, other meat in tortilla, meat inside bread, sweet snack, and salty snack. Sure, their menu claims to have a single vegetable option, but I've never actually seen them make it, and they act like they didn't realize it's on the menu when I ask. Love's may have smaller bathrooms, but they have at least 4 food groups covered in their fridge kiosk alone.
_handlemewithcare_@reddit
I agree. I am stopping at pretty much every LOVEs. Recently had a 12 hour drive and skipped on past the creepy beaver.
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
I'm seriously considering making the two-and-a-half-hour drive to the Buc-ees in Daytona just to get a few more bags of beaver nuggets.
_handlemewithcare_@reddit
Haha
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
Somebody upthread pointed out the difference: Love's is there to get people fueled up and going to their destination, while Buc-ee's is there to be a destination in and of itself.
Patient_Character730@reddit
Love's is a favorite of mine, but if it's a choice between buccees and love's, I'll choose buccees every time.
Thhe_Shakes@reddit
I always exit when I see the sign for our local Buccees!
...so I can go to the Loves across the street
Cinisajoy2@reddit
Not if you are in a big vechicle.
cleanuprequired1970@reddit
Loves is here in the PNW as well... but I rarely go there because fuel is consistently priced higher than the competition which is surprising considering they're a truck stop.
LatterStreet@reddit
I love these too. FL has a bunch.
I grew up in NJ and we had “state-owned” rest stops named after local icons, but apparently this doesn’t exist everywhere.
MyUsername2459@reddit
In Kentucky, the rest areas are just some parking along the side of the interstate with some public restrooms and vending machines and has road maps you can take. The first rest stop entering the state along the interstate will be a "Welcome Center" that's particularly nice looking and has a lobby with lots of brochures and pamphlets for tourist attractions. . .they used to have a help desk with someone to answer questions, but funding for that was cut.
There's one "service area" along the Western Kentucky Parkway that has fuel and a convenience store and a small fast food place. . .because there's not a lot of towns in that area and it was put there so there would be some place to stop for food and fuel along that pretty empty stretch of road.
MathematicianFashion@reddit
The Beaver Dam stop is built the way it is because the WKP used to be a toll road and it was a toll road service plaza designed so that you didn't have to get off the parkway and pay tolls to exit and re-enter.
Vert354@reddit
NJ "rest stops" are a gas station a gift shop and a mall food court. Everywhere else they're a picnic table and a vending machine.
sarsarsam@reddit
NY State Thurway rest stops are like NJ too
Traditional-Goose-60@reddit
We have rest stops in Mississippi also. They are basically small runaway ramps with overflowing trash cans, shady people and big signs saying "security not provided." If you gotta pee, go beside your car, otherwise, hit the woods with an extra t shirt.
ImmediateAd7069@reddit
Why do y'all put up with that?
The whole west coast through at least Colorado have well lit, clean rest stops. Loads of them are adjacent to nice parks and some even have hiking trails. They even heat the restrooms in winter!
angrywithnumbers@reddit
The service areas in NJ (DE , PA and MD have them too) are more like truck stops, they have restaurants , gas , a shop and bathrooms.
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
The service plazas on the Florida Turnpike are like this, but the rest areas on Interstates are generally unstaffed (except for security and a traveling cleaning crew). They've generally got bathrooms and vending machines, and usually (but not always) picnic tables.
ucjj2011@reddit
I had to drive from Newark to Washington DC about 20 years ago. I was very surprised by the service areas along the route - a gas station and usually a Roy Rogers restaurant basically in a wide median between the two rows.
We used to have Roy Rogers restaurants in my area, but the last one closed about 30 years ago.
mikeh0677@reddit
What is the extra t shirt for?
Traditional-Goose-60@reddit
Wipe yo ass with
151Ways@reddit
Three sea shells are your friend, fren
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
Here in Florida, rest stops generally have security at night and bathrooms that are serviceable, though there are of course exceptions.
LettingHimLead@reddit
Almost every rest stop I’ve ever stopped at have been at least decent - most are even pretty nice for what it is. Though I’ve never been to Mississippi.
Jakobites@reddit
Road tripped the US a decent amount. This had always been my experience until I hit a rest stop on I40 East in New Mexico that wouldn’t have been out of place in a Rob Zombie movie.
DjinnaG@reddit
Mississippi has had the worst rest stops I’ve ever seen for decades. Which is a bold statement when considering the neighboring states don’t exactly have a lot of money for transportation infrastructure, either.
Jazzlike-Monk-4465@reddit
I’ve slept in rest stops all over the country on road trips. Mississippi signage made me think I just shouldn’t and didn’t.
moodeng2u@reddit
The security started due to some robberies of tourists at rest areas by 'locals'.
LatterStreet@reddit
I’ve never been to MS but this definitely checks out what I’ve heard, lol!
reblynn2012@reddit
Plenty of nice places to stop. As anywhere, choose wisely.
Traditional-Goose-60@reddit
Not a lot to choose from in terms of actual rest areas along our interstate highways, unless it is a welcome center as you enter the state. Otherwise, you have the right to bear arms.
somecow@reddit
Basically same in TX, except sometimes just so nasty that the woods are better. And some actually also have a police substation built in, really the only thing dangerous there is the filth and smell. I’ll go poop in the woods and wipe with a whataburger napkin kthx.
reblynn2012@reddit
What the hell you talkin bout.
Traditional-Goose-60@reddit
Talkin bout these rest stops around my part of the state. Just pick any one back and forth on I-20 around Jackson to Meridian or up and down 59 from Hattiesburg to Meridian. Horrible.
Mninaz@reddit
Is this what they mean by a Mississippi mud pie?
poortomato@reddit
I still compare every rest stop I come across to the ones on the NJ Turnpike 🤭 they were always the highlight of a road trip for me.
WillieB52@reddit
Georgia and South Carolina both have state maintained rest areas.
chooseyourpick@reddit
Have you visited the Howard Stern one?
LatterStreet@reddit
I don’t think so, but I moved out of New Jersey two years ago!
Is it abandoned? It says so online…I love abandoned/backrooms stuff lol!
stellaflora@reddit
NJ still has rest stops. Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, Connie Chung, Judy Blume (yes I travel the parkway a lot)
Individual-Theory307@reddit
We have nice state owned rest stops on the interstate highways in Ohio. Unfortunately they rebuild them about once every 10 years. That takes about a year, and then if there is any highway construction within 20 miles, they will close it to use the parking lot for staging materials and parking heavy equipment. Some of the major state routes have small rest areas that are pretty nice though.
Jazzlike-Monk-4465@reddit
NJ turnpike stop “Molly pitcher” is the best. I’ve been to a huge number of battlefields but not the battle of Monmouth. Someday Molly pitcher, I’ll see the place you acted so bravely!
BusyBeinBorn@reddit
A lot of states have those, but only on toll roads so you don’t have to use an exit.
RevolutionaryWind249@reddit
We have state run rest stops in Minnesota. They're actually pretty nice, but they aren't really named after local celebrities. I think they're usually named after whatever scenic areas they're in. They're kind of more like parks in that they usually have a picnic area and walking trails in addition to restrooms and the inevitable vending machines.
angrywithnumbers@reddit
It's mainly historical figures and Vince Lombardi. The others I can remember are Molly Pitcher , Clara Barton, Walt Whitman and Richard Stockton.
LatterStreet@reddit
Yes, celebrities but those who had actual talent lol.
Bon Jovi and Whitney Houston have some new ones! Springsteen declined
SBognerAnderson@reddit
Fact. My parents always raved about the Minnesota rest stops when they'd come visit me.
AcadiaRemarkable6992@reddit
I used to live five minutes from the James Gandolfini rest stop on the Garden State
MyCatWasRightAbout@reddit
Im in NJ and I have a Love's down the street from me in BurlCo, right off the TurnPike. Exit 7 I think.
shelwood46@reddit
It usually varies by whether it's a toll road, the "state owned" rest areas, which often has some chains, are on toll roads, the normal truck stops are on non-toll highways like 80 through PA. That said, I love Wawa but Sheetz has some good points.
jonnyoslowe@reddit
Went on a road trip with my older sister. She would ONLY stop at Love’s for restroom stops.
jazzminarino@reddit
I haven't seen this covered down thread, but if you're a night shifter, they are the way to travel! Not only are they clean and well lit, but there's also legit food options at 3am. I only travel by Love's when I'm heading south because we can get a hot/fresh meal when everything else is closed after 8 or 10pm on 95. It's usually Subway so YMMV, but it's better than eating a sandwich out of a refrigerator when you need something more substantial than snacks.
chooseyourpick@reddit
Oof. The first Loves I went to was the dirtiest, non-functional, unfriendly place I ever went to. It was some where in the Carolinas, off route 95. All the snacks had a layer of greasy dust. The bathroom was incredibly neglected.
Historical_Bath_9854@reddit
I too am a fan. I loved QT when I first came across them in the 90s, I was so regular, they filled my tank while I got my coffee 😊, then they were everywhere 😞.
xx2983xx@reddit
I'm a Kwik Trip girl myself, but they are so specifically regional you aren't going to run into them often. When I moved from Wisconsin it was a RUDE awakening realizing what other gas stations most of the country puts up with. I stopped for coffee once and was absolutely horrified. The coffee at Kwik Trip is legitimately quite good. People will go there daily like other people might to a Starbucks. And outside of that, everything is clean, spacious, well maintained, large bathrooms, groceries, beer, coffee bar, hot spot. I love you Kwik Trip and miss you constantly 😭
december151791@reddit
Love's isn't regional. They're everywhere. Even (upstate) New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
helikophis@reddit
Not in my region! Gotta drive over an hour to get to one.
sfdsquid@reddit
I'm a Love's fan from NH. I go on a lot of long road trips. I sleep in a lot of Love's parking lots.
There are over 600 Love's in the US. At some point I found a pamphlet at one with a list of all of them.

I love their wide selection of cut fruit. Great for the road
Cinisajoy2@reddit
I prefer Pilots.
DjinnaG@reddit
Pilots is pretty good, but sells way too much religious paraphernalia , like enough to make me uncomfortable at some of them. Most of them have crushed ice for the fountain drinks, though, so I’ll stop if there isn’t a known better option in the area
december151791@reddit
It's like 1 rack of Bibles. They ain't gonna hurt you.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
I hadn't noticed the religious stuff.
helikophis@reddit
They’re also good, I’ll go to them if that’s what’s around.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
In my area, there are at least 2 Flying J's, 2 big Loves, and a half a dozen Pilots. The Pilots do have nice rest rooms as I learned one day when I got "stuck" in theirs for about an hour. Where we had dinner did not agree with me.
TheFiend100@reddit
Fun fact about loves: theyre the first gas station to have a convenience store inside
robertwadehall@reddit
I stopped at several on drives on I-90 and I-70 last year. Pretty decent.
warrenjt@reddit
I live in a Loves area, and I can confirm this. Great bathrooms, well stocked convenience store items (food, drink, OTC meds, even saw emergency packs of underwear at one once), and plenty of pumps and parking spots.
JollyRancher29@reddit
And usually good prices on good-quality gas
BeachFuture@reddit
Do they have Tesla charging stations?
warrenjt@reddit
Not that I’ve seen, but I haven’t specifically looked either because fuck Tesla.
calcato@reddit
The Love's "region" is out on the open highway... I think it counts.
hypnoticbacon28@reddit
I saw several of them on my way from Indiana to Texas a year ago. Went into a bunch of them across a few states. I liked them, they kept it nice and made my move to Texas go more smoothly.
_RomeoEchoDelta_@reddit
I will delay stopping or stop early for a Love's. Always clean, reliable and predictable selection, and can't beat the 13 cents off a gallon
twineandtwig@reddit

I used to used to work in the big truck industry, and those guys aren't the most emphatic about anything... and I can't say this was all of them, but the only truck stop that the few of them stated they loved was Loves.
A friend and I i drove across the country with our dogs last year, and I came to see why Loves was a reliable place to try to aim for as a next stop. Most of them have at least one if not two different dog caged in areas. Restrooms were always sparkling clean. Buc-ees didn't even have a windshield squeegee set up in any station... Loves not only had them, but had long handle squeegees to be able to reach over the SUV we were driving.
Loves is for families and professionals who are trying to get somewhere, where-as Buc Ees is a destination.
PuppyYuki@reddit
As a wife of a truck driver, I can also second Loves. They always have anything you need, more choices of everything, clean bathrooms, mostly nice staff, plenty of showers, aaand they almost always have the same layout. Some minor differences for smaller ones but generally look the same.
bass679@reddit
They're our goto when we travel cross country. The horrors of changing a baby in some random gas station the first time we did a big road trip will live with me forever.

Tatte is the real Boston answer. They're pretty good! Expensive, but you do get when you pay for; the coffee is quality and I've never had a bad meal there.
Funny enough, because Tatte expanded ro DC pretty rapidly and is now ubiquitous there, lots of people there think it's a DC-specific chain. Nah, it started in Boston!

I love Culver’s and I’m still mad there’s none in Massachusetts
NS_8099@reddit
I love Culver’s.
Ahtnamas555@reddit
Culver's is what I miss from MO for fast food. Freddie's is what I miss for a chocolate milkshake.
QuercusCarya@reddit
But if we are talking gas stations, Break Time is the sleeper pick behind the obvious QT and Casey’s because it is only in MO and they are always super clean in my experience and have no shortage of good gas station food.
Ahtnamas555@reddit
When I did a lot of travel work through the state, the newer breaktimes were pretty nice, I don't think to the same level as a QT, but they're also in smaller towns. I remember the one on Moberly with a Smokestack not being bad, and when you're working and needing something fast, bbq is a nice break from all the other fast food options. The one out near Taos is surprisingly not bad, and I think they carried pizza. The new one in Ashland also seemed nice. Vienna breaktime is a bit hit or miss, but usually fine.
Casey's is also hit or miss in my experience - the newer one in Holts Summit is great, same with the one on Mexico, those are better than the town's breaktimes. Casey's in Sedalia and Lake of the Ozarks are hit or miss - though I think the one I'm thinking of at the Lake might have had a face-lift since I stopped travel work - got to watch a couple of employees fight there once and then walk out.
The FastLane stops in Jonesburg and Kingdom City (the DQ one) were always good stops.
I remember really liking the Breaktime rewards program, I always had free drinks and stuff. But I also drove a lot - like some days having to fill up the gas tank twice... I got oil changes monthly because that's how often I hit 10,000 miles.
_handlemewithcare_@reddit
I’ve been traveling a good bit this past year. My first Casey’s encounter was excellent. There’s a range, though, apparently.
No-Conversation1940@reddit
The Break Time I know is close to the Missouri State University campus and is not that great. It's a rough part of town for gas stations, though. There was a Kum n Go nearby that routinely had the most 911 calls for any address in Springfield, MO in a given year before it closed.

I had culver's for the first time recently and thought, "oh, this is just freddie's"
Ahtnamas555@reddit
The first time I had Freddy's I thought "oh this is just Steak and Shake" ... I still think those 2 are more similar than Culver's and Freddie's are... Culver's has better fries and has cheese curds. Culver's burgers are generally a bit thicker than Freddie's. Culver's chicken is better, Freddy's chicken you can get at Steak and Shake. Freddy's secret sauce is just a type of Thousand Island dressing IIRC (worked there for a summer as a teen lol). Culver's has a more extensive menu - can't get roast beef, jumbo shrimp, mashed potatoes, fish, etc, at Freddy's. Freddy's is pretty much just burgers, hotdogs, custard.
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
I miss the old Steak n Shake. Y'know, before they gave up the whole facade of "we're a restaurant, not a workaurant" and started making you order at a kiosk, pick up your own order, and clean your own table.
And that was before they started openly courting fascists.
Ahtnamas555@reddit
Lol, they have kiosks now? Haven't been in a Steak and Shake in years - my hometown one was being turned into something else last time I was in the States for holidays... so I doubt they ever had kiosks.
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
I know the one on Fowler Ave in Tampa did, at least they did circa 2023. I was thoroughly disappointed. The food wasn't even as good as I remember, either.
I'd give them another chance, but, y'know, Nazis.
maclainanderson@reddit
Pretty much all I ever want is burgers and custard, so I guess it works out about the same for me
StormFallen9@reddit
Freddie's is probably my all-time favorite restaurant, but there's not many in my state. Their burgers and fries are the best I've ever had, I'd take them over Culver's or any other fast food any day
TheBimpo@reddit
Culvers is the best fast food chain in the country.
TemperMe@reddit
Eh it’s moved down south but it’s not really popular here. It’s on the lower end of the burger chains tbh. We had one near our college and went once a week or so but the taste no different than like a McDonald’s or BK but the worst part is the fries and shakes are horrible.
_handlemewithcare_@reddit
Care to share how far south? I’ve never seen one.
TemperMe@reddit
They’ve been in SC for a long time. They are also in NC
Informal_Pudding_424@reddit
Something to keep in mind is that everything from the upper Midwest is automatically extremely overrated on reddit. Having moved from the upper Midwest to California, yeah, it's goofy that people act like their burgers are better than In N Out.
DefrockedWizard1@reddit
maybe, maybe not. it's one of only a few places I can reliably not get glutened so they've got that going for them, but they are really overpriced.
shelwood46@reddit
When I visit my friends in Livonia MI, there's a Culvers and Portillos in the same shopping center, and a Del Taco across the street, it's awesome.
loweexclamationpoint@reddit
Those are pale imitations of what you can get in Wisconsin and Chicago.
do_mika@reddit
I love cheese curds. They’re hard to find outside of the Midwest.
DoctorJiveTurkey@reddit
Trader Joe’s has fried cheese curds if there’s not a Culvers nearby
do_mika@reddit
Thanks, I didn’t know that!
LatterStreet@reddit
I had the best cheese curds at Culver’s in Greenville, MI.
Tried some at BWW in New Jersey and got food poisoning!! Never again
TemperMe@reddit
Culver’s cheese curds have no flavor though. It’s an insult to cheese curds. I didn’t know it was possible to mess up fried cheese.
RubGlum4395@reddit
You dont think they're overrated? Had some last summer. I was disappointed that the cheese wasn't super melty. I thought it would pull like mozzarella. Between myself daughter and I we barely made a dent. The ice cream was very good for fast food. Burger was just mid.
do_mika@reddit
I dont get much food there besides ice cream and curds. It’s hard to find fried curds here so I jut gotta take what I can get. I think because curds are smaller they won’t be as stringy/melty like mozzarella sticks. Mozzarella also melts easier than cheddar.
shelwood46@reddit
I mean, they are normal if from a chain for cheese curds, but I grew up in WI and know what to expect. The pot roast sandwich is better than their burger.
RubGlum4395@reddit
Only grew up with cold cheese curds from a dairy near our house. It closed before I was 8.
BoopleBun@reddit
Upstate NY does fresh cheese curds decently well. (I think Vermont does too.) Not so much the fried ones though.

aracauna@reddit
We've got Culver's in Georgia now and I'd avoided them because their frozen custard just isn't as good as Freddy's, but we stopped inside one while passing through Wisconsin a couple of years ago and I discovered the rest of the menu is much better than Freddy's, so now I'll stop at a Culver's if I need fast food, but I'm still going to Freddy's for the custard.
stellaflora@reddit
I just had it for the first time and give me ALL the butter burgers and cheese curds.
maimou1@reddit
We have those in my area of Florida. I tried them once. The famous butter burger was just .. unremarkable. And the vanilla ice cream tasted like chemicals to me (full disclosure, I love to cook and used to make my own French vanilla cooked custard ice cream every Fourth of July, so I'm picky).
director_guy@reddit
I'm a life-long In N Out fan and I'd rather eat at Culver's. I want them in California so bad.
hung_like__podrick@reddit
No way. Culvers is not consistent like In n Out is. Some locations absolutely suck, which happens with a lot of fast food places but not In n Out
Mountain-Bath-6515@reddit
Yeah, we have a Culver's (mountain west) and it's not that great.
Glizzys4everyone@reddit
Maybe In N Out is more consistent in Cali but I had a very bad one in Colorado
director_guy@reddit
Very true, I'm comparing the very best I've had at each.
stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
I’m moving to Tennessee, so now I can have both! I love them both
lickmywatermelon@reddit
Im from California and when I was visiting my girlfriends family in Missouri, they told me to try Culver's. It had me thinking we could move closer to her family. On the drive back I stopped at one in Colorado then in Utah. I wish we had one out here. I even looked into franchise.
LakeTwo@reddit
I feel biased being from Wisconsin but Culver's is really a significant level above other fast food chains. In fact I might not even classify it in the same group as McDonald's, BK, Wendy's, etc. It has delivery to tables, entrees such as fish fry, etc. When doing driving trips there is a 0% chance we will stop at any other restaurant if Culver's is available.
Inside-Run785@reddit
Let’s not insult Culver’s by putting it in the same camp as McDonald’s. McDonald’s is trash by comparison.
meep_meep_creep@reddit
TBFair, they did say they wouldn't put it in the same category, but maybe they should have been more emphatic.
For me, I don't know. Never been to a Culver's. There's one on Arapahoe in Denver I drove past a bunch of times but never stopped there.
Severe_Feedback_2590@reddit
Live in Tennessee and there’s a Culver’s not far from Nashville (2 hours away for us). When I got a colonoscopy in Nashville, I went to Culver’s after. (Bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate malt). So good.
kreativegaming@reddit
I don't love their prices but it's impossible to find anyone else who does a good pork tenderloin sandwich, sure AnW but those are few and far between and only some of them carry it.

Uggh... I was in Chicago a couple of months ago and tried White Castle for the first time... Disgustingly gross is an understatement. No way in hell I would ever eat there again.
uvaspina1@reddit
I think your issue was going before 3 am and not being drunk. You need a re-do

well, i was definitely drunk... but it was not at 3am... closer to 11 pm. I couldn't get drunk enough to want to give it a re-do.

I scrolled way too far to find this comment. A Crave Case has 30 sliders. I’ll never forget the time my roommate and I rolled up to Whitey’s at 3 am exactly and asked how much for a Crave Case. “You girls don’t want a Crave Case!” the worker replied through the intercom. “You’re right. We want two. One regular, one cheese.” A few hours later, we actually kicked one of our guy friends out of the apartment due to the eye-watering flatulence that subsequently afflicted him.

somePig_buckeye@reddit
I live in Ohio and love Cheerwine. When I was in NC last fall, I made sure to stop at Bojangles to get a fountain Cheerwine. There is a Bojangles around Columbus but I don’t think it has Cheerwine.
robertwadehall@reddit
I like Bojangles. They were a favorite of mine as a kid in S Florida in the 80s. I stop at them when I’m in the South
tracytorr0712@reddit
My daughter worked at Bojangles a few years ago when she was in high school. They made the biscuits from scratch. Not sure if they still do it.
somePig_buckeye@reddit
They opened a few a couple of years ago all kind of on the northern side. It looks like there is a new one in Circleville I might have to try. I live in SW Ohio, NE Ohio is a mystery to me.

Knox_the_Boxer@reddit

BenjaminGeiger@reddit
The first one I ever visited was in Gainesville, and that was almost a decade ago. (Maybe longer. I can't remember which trip it was on.)
Knox_the_Boxer@reddit
Our daughter lives in Jacksonville and was exposed to cook out while managing a teen summer camp. She’s super excited to see them coming toward Florida. There’s one at the outlet mall exit in Savannah and I think a newer one in Brunswick. Y’all hang on- cookout is coming!
BenjaminGeiger@reddit
I went to the one in Brunswick last year; I had to go to Jacksonville anyway, so I decided to make a day of it and drive on to Brunswick to visit Cook-out and Buc-ees (yes, I'm aware there are Buc-ees in Daytona and St. Augustine), and to pick up a bottle of real Everclear (Florida doesn't allow the sale of anything stronger than 153 proof).
beenoc@reddit
The food is decent, not great, but dirt cheap (at least it used to be, now it's just 'affordable' as opposed to other fast food that is 'pricey.') The biggest novelty there is the sides - some are pretty substantial, like "a corndog" or "a quesadilla" (you can get a tray that is 2 quesadillas, with your two sides being a quesadilla and a quesadilla.)
But the shakes? I've had shakes from McDonald's, Wendy's, Hardee's, Sonic, Dairy Queen, Steak'n'Shake, Shake Shack, and probably several others I'm forgetting. Cook-Out shakes beat them all and it's not close. Like 40+ flavors (plus you can mix and match literally anything from any of the flavors - want a Oreo, Reese's, and caramel cheesecake shake? You could do that. Also the cheesecake is they literally blend a full slice of cheesecake into the shake), so thick they give you a spoon and don't even always give you a straw (and when they do it's one of those mondo 1/2" straws), and so, so good.
CompetitiveRub9780@reddit
I’ve heard about the shakes! I’m def going to have to try them

BusinessWarthog6@reddit

rubey419@reddit
There’s a Culver’s just down the road from me. Been a few times. I like their cheese curds. Just doesn’t beat Cookout on price and taste for me.

lyn02547@reddit

Personally it's the frozen custard for me, it's included with the kids meal and their machine is always working.
Sudden_Nose9007@reddit
Culver’s is great. I haven’t done this in years, so I’m not sure if it’s still a possibility. Culver’s had this deal where kids meal got a free scoop of custard, so as an adult I would get the kid’s cheeseburger, sub fries for cheese curds, and then get the free scoop of the day and a kid’s size drink. It was still way too much food, but it was such a good deal.

Kind of a deep cut that mostly died out but is still kicking in a few places - Taco John's.
It's still firmly on the college-student-budget tier. If has never tried to become upscale, and in a way that probably helped kill it in many locations where the Chipotles of the world thrived.
But where they exist, it's a straight 1980s throwback vibe. Just tacos, potato oles, and a few other items.

Whataburger is complete crap. They claim to cook to order. They do not I went there once. They packed everything into the smallest bag possible and it wouldn't even close. The secret to getting good coffee out of a Dunks is that you have to learn the recipe at your Dunks, because for example, "dark, two sugars" will get you a totally different beverage at each location. We all have our own formula, which works at our preferred franchise and time of day, and we all think that every other Dunks is garbage.
One thing we can all agree on though, is that even a shitty iced coffee is better than that syrupy sweet tea half of you people seem to love.

In California, I feel like in n out is a bit overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I do like it once in a while and it seems higher quality than mcdonalds or whatever, maybe a better meal that doesn’t feel quite as fast foody… but it still is. The way they always have drive-through lines stretching out into the street is just not worth it. Going inside to order/eat can be a bit better but sometimes it gets just as crowded, line out the door, bit of a madhouse. Their fries are kinda weird too, but then you can get them cheesy or animal style and then it’s a new, different thing.
morganproctor_19@reddit
Totally agree. I think the food used to be fine and deserved the hype, but in the last 10 years the food is not anything special but people go crazy with it as if it's the only place worth going. Maybe it's a nostalgia/comfort thing?

Quantity > Quality wise cheaper than the rest. I can still get full on the “Cookout Tray” for less than $10.
Cookout > Culver’s, In-N-Out, Five Guys, Whataburger for best $ Value in my opinion. Fight me.
morganproctor_19@reddit
SoCal native upvoting you for your opinion about In-N-Out. VERY overrated.

Suuuuuper local to Humboldt County CA is Ramone's Bakery. It's kinda pricey but the vibe and the food (the main location is a full service restaurant) can't be beat. My favorite drink is the Mexican mocha and my favorite food is the cardamom knot.

When I still lived in Texas I wasn’t near a HEB but I was near Central Market, which is just Bougie HEB. Miss it all the time.
Stefferdiddle@reddit
I would do the same for Wegmans.

Every time I go to Texas I literally fill my carry-on bag going home with H-E-B’s fresh tortillas.
CateranBCL@reddit
Most people probably don't understand the full impact of this statement.
For our readers outside of Texas, HEB actually made a commercial about people doing exactly this.
Bookworm10-42@reddit
I didn’t know that. Wild!
Kajeke@reddit
My boss is in town. He used to live here in San Antonio. We always tease him about his huge suitcase for a 4 day trip and that he was going to stuff it with H-E-B groceries. He is in fact going to make an H-E-B stop for items like fajita seasoning.
shan68ok01@reddit
HEB and Mrs. Baird's bread are the only two things I wish Texas would transport to Oklahoma.
For clarification, we used to get Mrs. Baird's bread, but they no longer ship to Oklahoma.

Beefalo_Stance@reddit
HEB is the best grocery store chain in the country, and it's not particularly close. It's easily the top thing I miss about living in Texas.
needsmorequeso@reddit
I got the hell out of Texas for reasons, but I’d be ok with HEB making a play for world domination. I have to shop at like four stores to get what I’d get in a single HEB curbside pickup.
Zorkeldschorken@reddit
Me too. I really miss HEB.
texdiego@reddit
I love the products at HEB but it is SO freaking crowded. Even if I go at 8 in the morning or 8 at night, it's uncomfortable. Do people just accept that or is my location especially bad?
LateNightPhilosopher@reddit
I always just order online and use the free curbside pickup. Shopping is such a waste of time
CateranBCL@reddit
It's probably your location. I've seen ours get busy from time to time, but never uncomfortably crowded.

Ok, good. There still aren't that many in the DFW area, so I'm hoping it will get better as more locations open. I bet people from a large radius are coming to the one in my town.

Unless it’s a carneceria, I ain’t goin. Maaaaaaaybe fiesta, or the indian place or h mart (lol buying a whole ass live fish is nuts). Carneceria will always have a special place in my heart because they have taco abuela in the corner. But no, HEB.

As someone who grew up in WNY and had Wegmans and Tim Hortons as regional chains, Stewart's is the ONLY right answer to "best NYS chain". The ice cream is great. Last time we were in ADK we got off a high peak and IMMEDIATELY went to Stewart's because even their hot food slaps pretty hard for what it is.
zar1234@reddit
Stewart’s campfire s’mores ice cream is the best ice cream I’ve ever had. I don’t live near any, but my family rents a house near the great Sacandaga lake in ny every summer and we go through probably 3-4 gallons of it in a week and then we buy extra to bring home.
Crazy-Squash9008@reddit
Stewart's is outside of my region but just WNY vs. CNY so I get to go pretty frequently. I love that place so much. I only agree to my husband's frequent overnight trips to go to the State Museum in Albany so I can hit up Stewart's 6 or 7 times. 😄

Braums. It's what Dairy Queen should have become.
Braums is around Oklahoma and just a little bit in other states, including where I used to live in SW MO.
For those of you who don't know, DQ has served hot food for a few decades and the quality is pretty middle of the road. The issue is that some franchises do a good job with it and some don't. When I was a young man, a DQ burger was part of my hangover cure.
DQ, under the ownership of Berkshire Hathaway, has gotten progressively worse and worse on the hot food front over the last 30 years or so. Again, it's very hit or miss. Sometimes you will get a really decent DQ burger and sometimes it will not be great.
Braums is the dairy bar concept(burgers/fries/shakes) with a small dairy grocery section inside the store and a few common grocery items, so every Braum's location is easy to get to if the weather is bad or if panic buying has set in. If you're travelling and need some grub and a dozen eggs before you hit the campsite, Braums is a good place to go.
Again, the quality isn't going to be the best and it's not trying to be. The food is good, but it's not trying to be 'exceptional' in the way most people think, but I don't need it to be. I'm in a fast food place. I want a fast food burger that just tastes like a burger. Braums does that quite well and when I go visit family I make sure to have it at least twice per visit.
My personal burger is the 4 cheese with onions and jalapenos added. The fatty cheese gets cut through by the heat of the pickled jalapenos and the earthy pop of raw onion. They do have crinkle cut fries so if you're not a fan of that, you're kinda shit out of luck, I don't really like fries anyway, so I tend to just get the burger.
Ludwigthemadking@reddit
I normally don't like crinkle cut fries, but, honestly, Braum's has great fries. Always crispy, perfectly salted, and never soggy (which is usually my gripe with crinkle cut). Otherwise, you totally hit the nail on the head. Braum's is spectacular at cheap burgers and ice cream.
Saltpork545@reddit
Yeah, they're good but I know people get very specific about their fries and I've seen people go 'ugh crinkle cut' without ever even trying them, so I just give a heads up.
If you like them, you like them and pretty much all hot and fresh fries are going to be good on some level.
01d_n_p33v3d@reddit
TLDR; Saltpork545 should think about writing restaurant reviews.
Do you review professionally? You should think about it
If you don't, find a small local paper, or Patch and see if they need someone. I did weekly restaurant reviews freelance for a county wide paper near Annapolis for thirteen years.
Basically, it paid for most of a meal each for a family of four at local mom and pop and "family" restaurants, or business lunch places with a couple colleagues, plus bars and greasy spoons. And a very occasional serious eatery (on which I took a loss financially)
I provided a service for local families, got to meet some interesting people, tried some truly unusual places I never would have known about, let alone considered and, frankly, my wife and kids would rarely have seen the inside of a restaurant without that newspaper subsidy.
Not a bad hobby, and I think you have the right outlook and skill set.
Saltpork545@reddit
I haven't honestly ever considered that as a form of side income, but it's not a terrible idea.
I appreciate the comment and will genuinely think about it.

I have a funny Braums story. Growing up, within a 70ish mile radius of my hometown, there were three Braums. Every time you went to one of those towns, the assumption was you went to Braums. (The vast majority of people did and the ones who didn't, well, we don't talk about Bruno.)
My hometown was obsessed. For the longest time, any time a new store was being built or renovated, the rumor was it was Braums. People would go to city council meetings and ask what overtures needed to be made to get a Braums. Looking back, it was mad, but at the time, seemed totally reasonable, lol.
Well, finally, the truth came out. The same guy owned two of the nearest Braums and he told the local paper (this was back in the 90s, way before Facebook) that he would NEVER build a Braums in my hometown, that if another franchise owner tried to build one, he would find a way to stop them, that he HATED my hometown and would do whatever it took to deny the town a Braums.
About a year later, he built another Braums in a town about 20 miles away and for the first 6 months, gave a discount to anyone who could prove they were from my hometown, just to rub the fact in that he could have built one in my hometown, but chose not to. People were pissed, but still went, lol.
About 10 years later, he retired and his son took over the franchise, leading to hopes that the town would finally get a Brahms, but alas, there still is no Braums in my hometown.

"The radius", plus the fact that Braum's is from Oklahoma, makes sure it will never have the cool factor of other regional burger chains. This is fine. Braum's is the best of them all.
"The radius" - Braum's will not open store locations outside a 300 mile radius of their farm in central Oklahoma.

For the DMV, the big ones I can really think of are Ledo pizza, District Taco, and Royal Farms because the other ones (Five Guys, Cava, Sweetgreen, etc…) are widespread now.
I swear by Ledo as the true Maryland style of pizza and it’s my favorite of the three. District taco is pretty good for what it is, but I’d rather go to a more authentic Mexican place. Royal Farms would be goated but it’s surprisingly expensive considering it’s just a Wawa or Bucc-ee’s but from Baltimore and specializes in fried chicken.

PetriDishCocktail@reddit
Five guys is really expensive. However, they've been forced to lower prices and now have a 13.99 combo(small cheeseburger, small drink, and small french fry). Realistically, that's just $2 more than the Big Mac combo so it's now my go-to. Ironically, near me sizzler has the best burger. Plus, it's only $16.99
kwikthroabomb@reddit
Eh, the quality took a nosedive when they got bought. General price increases for all fast food started happening around that time, so it's been pretty easy to pretend like Whataburger just closed permanently.

Prestigious-Talk1112@reddit
Whataburger was not over hyped in any sense of the word but as soon as they started to go outside of Texas and Oklahoma they took a sizable nosedive. While the burgers are still okay it is not what it used to be and that sucks. The family sold a large part of the company to some conglomerate and you know investors do what investors do.

Togo's Sandwiches, started in San Jose and has over 180 stores on the West Coast, mostly in Northern California. I always get the #7 hot with everything.
Special_Customer_997@reddit
wtf I am born and raised Bay Area and I never knew Togo's was like locally started. That's so cool
EpsilonAmber@reddit
didn't know togos was regional, guess I'll check it out.

Togo's is the BEST!
IShouldSaySoSir@reddit
It’s not even the best in California, Ike’s.

The Matt Cain is my go-to. I like the Adam Rickman, Hot Momma, and the We're Just Friends also.
DznyMa@reddit
Never heard of them.
Shot-Artichoke-4106@reddit
I like Ike's a lot too.
DetectiveTrickyCad@reddit
Growing up, I always thought Togos and Subway Al were equally popular nationwide. Still doesn’t hold a candle to Erik’s DeliCafe, but that’s a bit more local than Togos.
Shot-Artichoke-4106@reddit
Erik's is my answer to this question.
Honest_Road17@reddit
Erik's is pretty good, but Togo's takes me back to some early childhood memories of 3rd grade class parties with 6 foot sandwiches from Togo's.
DetectiveTrickyCad@reddit
It’s been probably close to a decade since I’ve been, but they made a good sandwich and are a South Bay institution.
Shot-Artichoke-4106@reddit
I walked past the site of the original Togos yesterday :-)
Honest_Road17@reddit
I remember the one they had in Santa Cruz that was within walking distance of the Boardwalk that always had sand on the floor.
ThreeToedMartian@reddit
Friday nights were dine out nights in our house. If we didn’t go to House of Pizza, we got a family size sandwich at Togo’s (Italian…might have been a #16?) to share. This was in the late 70s and early 80s. Nothing fancy on my dad’s school teacher salary, but fond memories.
DroolHandPuke@reddit
Haven't thought of togos in 20+ years, there's one in Visalia, where I grew up.
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
We lost our Togos in San Diego years ago. I still miss the turkey and avocado. We have loads of really good sandwich shops that make technically the same sandwich, but it just doesn’t hit the same.
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
I went to Berkeley and loved Togos. There was one randomly in Alexandria, VA when I lived there about 20 years ago! I moved back to California, and apparently, that one closed. I'm all about a #9 or a #24.

Meijer is definitely the best grocery store chain in Michigan. Significantly better than Kroger or Walmart.
Equal-Letterhead5592@reddit
They must have kept the quality in Michigan then. The one by me always has things mispriced.
molten_dragon@reddit
I do think there's something to that. I have a fairly low opinion of Kroger stores around here but my sister lives in the Cincinnati area and the stores near her are a lot nicer than the ones around me. I wonder if they try a little harder to keep the stores near their headquarters nice.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
Jack in the Box. Similar to McD, wendy, Carls. They have breakfast all day, decent full size salads, these weird things called tacos that arent quite right but are addictive af, better egg rolls than the Chinese place, a massive soda menu, and midnight munchie meals.
silkywhitemarble@reddit
Good one! I don't wake up until after other places have stopped serving breakfast, so it's good place to have that option any time of day. I had no idea they were pretty regional until a friend told me they always have it when they visited the west coast since they didn't have it on the east coast. Don't get addicted to anything new, because they change out new things pretty often.
They have a brunch burger on their munchie menu that's really good--get it with a hash brown and put it on your burger...you'll thank me later.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
At one point they had one in every state, and navy states still have one or two so it's always with a search. I've been eyeing that brunch burger, will give it a shot, thanks
01d_n_p33v3d@reddit
A fond 50 year old memory of hitting Jack in the Box for tacos after the bars closed when nothing else was open. Next-day regret wrapped in greasy paper. Rite of passage.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
Obviously not in San Diego, I'm pretty sure we have taco shops that haven't closed in 50 years. Back in the 70s (yeah yeah I'm old) we'd get a 25 cent tall and a crappy hamburger (now a kids meal burger) and put the tobasco drenched soggy lettuce from the taco on the burger in an attempt to give it flavor. My mom liked the jacks burrito but they didn't have it long.
01d_n_p33v3d@reddit
Nah, semi-rural suburb northwest of Baltimore. And it wasn't ever a daytime urge. Or a sober one. The bars usually had better food, but driving home.... And, damn, I knew better!
Good Mexican food? Not many in these parts in the 70s that I can recall. Spanish places in the city. A taco place in College Park.
But I, too, am old, and the memory slips now and then.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
LoL i wouldn't think so! My SIL is a Ma born and raised and she thinks tacos are made with ground beef. We teach her when she visits.
01d_n_p33v3d@reddit
I'm glad to report things here have improved markedly.
rhombusx@reddit
A lot of good ones have been talked about already. Some other ones I've really enjoyed are:
Northeast - Carvel
Midwest - Steak n Shake
California - El Pollo Loco, The Habit (though I think both have expanded?)
Colorado - Good Times, Santiago's
Equal-Letterhead5592@reddit
Steak n Shake is definitely not as good as it used to be.
silkywhitemarble@reddit
We have El Pollo Loco here in Nevada, and The Habit in Vegas. Never had The Habit, but El Pollo Loco is in our fast food rotation when we want something different. We used to get it when we lived in L.A. too.
01d_n_p33v3d@reddit
Where did you find a Carvel store?! Haven't seen one in 30 years.
rhombusx@reddit
There are still 370 Carvel stores, most are in NY and NJ. Most of them closed in the 90s, but I think they've bounced back a bit. I haven't lived in the area for years, but there's still one near my parent's house. You can even still order Cookiepuss and Fudgie the Whale from their website!
01d_n_p33v3d@reddit
They carry Carvel cakes here in various Maryland and VA supermarkets. And every birthday has required and received a carvel ice cream cake with ®crunchies for the past 32 years. But actually having one built in the store, and getting a soft ice cream when I pick it up are just memories now.
I'll check out the website, but I95 and the Jersey Turnpike might be a bit much for a carvel run.

Zaxby’s is the absolute goat of the south. Nothing comes anywhere close to it in the realm of simple fried chicken tenders, fries n toast.
Its dominance is so glaringly obvious that I honestly think if you bring up Chickfila or Raising Canes as a chicken alternative, something is genuinely wrong with you. Its not that those places have bad chicken per say, its just that the quality is such a steep drop from Zaxby’s that if Zaxby’s is available, you’re an absolute idiot for not picking it.
The 1st Michelin star, of the famed Michelin system, is supposed to be reserved for restaurants that are so good, it is worth stopping just to try them if they are on the way to your destination. I would never say any old random Zaxby’s deserves a Michelin star.
Because they deserve two. The second Michelin star is reserved for places so good, they deserve a detour to PUT them on your road trip. Yes, it’s cheap American fastfood, but it is without a doubt the highest form of said cheap american fastfood. The next time you are driving through the south, you add zaxby’s to your trip, where ever you’re going, and you try this mofo’ing chicken. You haven’t experienced the quality-cheap American fast-food of the south until you’ve had it.
Equal-Letterhead5592@reddit
Try Jaggers. Best fries and tenders around. They are moving up!

Krystal — very much like White Castle, another regional chain. It’s a family favorite. When we were on road trips, that was where Mom and Dad wanted to stop for lunch.
My mom jokes that she still hasn’t forgiven her mother and sister for going to “the Krystal” (we always add “the” for some reason) while she was in labor with me. (It’s been nearly sixty years so I think she’s over it.)
jazzminarino@reddit
Was looking for Krystal's. When I flew into Florida a couple years back, I bought a couple dozen to go eat with my middle school best friend. I think you buy them for nostalgia because it certainly isn't the taste. Though the spicy chick definitely slaps.
goodbye_rubytuesday@reddit
Philly/Delco girl living in Florida. Wawa's hoagies have gone downhill and I don't know if it's because they have a worse supplier in Florida or if they're worse up north now, too. But I still reach for their hoagies for beach days, because of nostalgia for Jersey/Delaware trips I took as a kid.
rawbface@reddit
Wawa is good, but it used to be the holy grail. They used to locally source good hoagie rolls for their sandwiches. They had fresh bakery items. And the wawa-branded bottled drinks and soft drinks were dirt cheap. In the town I grew up in, kids would just hang out outside the wawa.
Nowadays, prices have gone up everywhere but the wawa-brand drinks aren't really cheaper. There are more food options, but the quality has declined somewhat. The bakery items are still there but they are anything but fresh.
They're still convenient and consistent though. And it still blows my mind to go to a wawa in Florida where they have hot empanadas and a cold beer section.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
Been going to Wawa since 1993 and this is accurate. The meatball sub is kind of top tier though.
Fun fact, the Wawa just south of West Chester used to also have a Taco Bell inside it.
Odd_Pack400@reddit
I pretty much wrote this exact comment too. It was great years ago and now it’s okay. I visited a Wawa in NC off 95 recently that had nice seating indoors & outdoors, and had family bathrooms. It was the nicest one I’ve been in. Surprised it had the fresh guava juice like in Fl too.
EffectiveCycle@reddit
We just got our first Wawa right before Christmas (Sheetz has been here a couple years and Buc-ees opens next week). I really liked the hoagie I had but I wouldn’t go out of my way for them.
minnick27@reddit
That’s the advantage of living in Wawa country, you don’t have to go out of the way for them. I pass 3 on my less than 3 mile commute. There’s even a handful of places near me where you can literally see another Wawa while exiting a Wawa
EffectiveCycle@reddit
Yeah right now it’s about 15 minutes from my apartment. Only worth it if I’m going out that way to Target/Kohls.
nomuggle@reddit

And a lot of the time I don’t feel like eating inside so I just don’t eat there often
tracytorr0712@reddit
As someone on the East Coast, In n Out holds a mystical appeal for me. I’ve never had it but am amazed that you always hear raves about the food. Someday, maybe, I’ll have the chance to experience it!
One-Strategy5717@reddit
They're the only thing other than Jack-in-the-Crack open at midnight near me. Since I work nights a lot, that's important.
Also important is that I can order Protein-style, since I try to cut back on carbs for health reasons. The only other chain that will do that is Wendy's.
Jethris@reddit
I have never liked their fries. They always tasted like cardboard.
ocvagabond@reddit
Light well or well done. Only way to eat In N Out fries. Careful when ordering Light Well. The rookies will put in Light which is a limp noodle fry.
Hooligan8403@reddit
You don't eat In-n-Out for the fries. Burgers and shakes is where it's at.
hung_like__podrick@reddit
I’ve never gotten the cardboard analogy. They taste like potatoes, oil and salt which is exactly what they are. Have you ever tasted cardboard before?
PrimusDCE@reddit
It's comparative. Put it up against Five Guys fries and it's noticeably dry, flavorless, and with bad texture.
Honest_Road17@reddit
You have to eat them fresh, they start going stale almost immediately. If you're taking it home, ask for a box with a lid. Keeps them hotter longer.
SilentAcoustic@reddit
You gotta order it a certain way, but yeah they’re pretty ass
extendedsilence@reddit
doesn't matter how well-done you get them, they're still so disappointing
somearcanereference@reddit
I don't go often, but when I do it's because the day sucked and I need something I can't get at one of those fast food places that want you to stick to their printed menu.
A grilled cheese with extra cheese and a side of fries done medium-well with cheese and grilled onions doesn't erase the suck, but it sure makes my day better for like 10 minutes. I'll take it.
evergreengoth@reddit
It's so overhyped ngl. I think people make a big deal out of it because they attach it to Californian identity.
Shot-Artichoke-4106@reddit
I agree that is is over-hyped. I mean, I like In and Out, don't get my wrong, but it's not something that visitors needs to go out of their way for or anything. It's a fast food hamburger. I know people who come to CA and you ask them what they want to do and see, and this is at the top of their list.
evergreengoth@reddit
I had animal fries and a burger there once because my friend insisted when I visited. They were alright, and that was it. I was so underwhelmed.
Shot-Artichoke-4106@reddit
Yeah, people build it up like it's going to change your life or something.
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
I love it like once a year. I’m not a huge take out person and will always prefer my local taco shop over anything else. Fries are only good animal style. I don’t understand why they don’t double fry them. The schtick of cutting them as you wait is not worth shitty fries.
extendedsilence@reddit
yeah, it is crazy to me that they go through the hassle of cutting them fresh but then don't double fry.
and even animal style fries are only kinda good for \~5mins before they congeal into an unedible lump.
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
Agreed. Must be wolfed down while too hot to eat safely lol.

In&Out gets a weird reputation. I think you had to grow up with it to enjoy the fries lol.
It’s for late nights and long drives, post shows, and after theme parks. Unlike Denny’s I wouldn’t have it after a funeral.
It’s reliably good for the price. That’s what people mean by “it’s the best” in California you can get a double double , fry , and drink for under 15 bucks and it’s all made fresh.

Braum's ice cream and dairy. Phillyfan10@reddit
Wawa is THE chain in my region.
10-15 years ago, they had genuinely good food. Ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, they genuinely cared about quality.
Then corporate greed got its grubby hands on it. They changed their suppliers, to go with cheaper, mass produced, foods that are easier to ship, and quality dropped dramatically. It’s no different from a Sheetz, Royal Farms, etc these days. The food on most cases certainly isn’t “bad” for a quick and easy bite, but definitely nothing to go out of your way for anymore, as much as people still like to pretend it is.

We don't really believe in chains up here (thanks, Act 250). But Stewart's Shops did manage to come over from New York. Not to be confused with the Stewart's that makes root beer or the one that used to make the steak sandwiches, this is as close as we get to Sheetz or Wawa. No touchscreen ordering so it's closer to a 7-Eleven where you just take your hot stuff off the rack (or ladle up your own soup or meatballs). They do have their own ice cream. Coffee is legend, and there's always some kind of donut or apple fritter around to go with it.
Saetia_V_Neck@reddit
Wawa used to be good but is bad now, the breads always soggy and they’re doing too much with the menu instead of just focusing on hoagies and coffee.

Chris_Golz@reddit
Taco Time is terrible. It's like someone had a taco from Jack In The Box and then decided to expand it into an entirely new cuisine. It's like the "Mexican" food people made back in the 70's.
Burgerville is okay. The crispy breakfast sandwich is probably the best breakfast served at any fast food chain. The milkshakes and seasonal items are great. The burgers are just okay. $20 for a burger, side, and a drink is pretty steep.
geekycurvyanddorky@reddit
Yikes… I haven’t had Jack in the Box in 20+ years but it sure didn’t taste anything like Taco Time. I’ve had Midwestern style/70’s style white people Mexican food too, it doesn’t taste like that either. To be fair, Mexican food on the border of America and Mexico doesn’t taste like food in Mexico City, it varies all over the nation.
Burgerville is expensive because they use fresher ingredients, and the food doesn’t sit under heat lamps for ages… and now actual super processed fast food from McDonald’s costs about the same.
Chris_Golz@reddit
The salsa bar has ranch. The tacos have cheddar cheese. They serve tater tots. And if you're going to put "Taco" in your name, you should know the difference between a taco, a burrito, and flautas.
In and Out is Double Double with fries and a drink is $11.50, and that's in California, where they pay fast food workers $20 an hour. Burgerville Double Cheeseburger with fries and a drink is $19.58.
geekycurvyanddorky@reddit
I never said they were the most perfect representation of Mexican cuisine, it’s just delicious fast food. They use fresh ingredients, they taste good, I’ve never gotten sick from their food. The ranch should be with the other sauces, and it makes sense to have it there by the salsas and the drinks. Your hate boner for the original Taco Time is strange, and no one is forcing you to eat there. Have the day you deserve, dude.
canisdirusarctos@reddit
Also worth noting that INO uses fresh local ingredients, so far more comparable.
canisdirusarctos@reddit
I've explained it as defining itself. It isn't even mexican-inspired, it's like someone saw some pictures and then tried to invent gringo tacos with only some general idea of what went into them. They don't even know the difference between a burrito and a flauta/taquito.

I haven’t had smiley face potatoes in such a long time! I’ll have to go there for those and a huckleberry shake!

I love white chicken chili at Taco Time. I prefer Frugals and Dicks to Burgerville, they are just so expensive.
geekycurvyanddorky@reddit
Burgerville is expensive because they use locally sourced food, and they don’t let cooked meals sit for hours under lamps. I’ll have to look up Frugals and Dicks some time!
NW_Forester@reddit
Dick's is all locally sourced and never frozen. Not sure about Frugals.

Taco Time Northwest — very important distinction from the imposter Taco Times outside western Washington!
geekycurvyanddorky@reddit
Oh TTNW left me sick both times I tried it, and it was lacking in both flavor and options at both locations too… I have relatives that worked for Taco Time while I was growing up, and the recipes are still the same as they were then, and the flavors are the same too. They have gluten free and vegetarian safe options as well. But I’m glad you enjoy the other Taco Time!

I’m also a fan of Ivar’s. It’s not fancy, but I do crave it sometimes and their chowder is great.

jcoigny@reddit
I haven't been to either in a couple decades now myself. I never could get over the prices at burgerville. The only thing I ever tried at a&W of course we're the floats which were great
geekycurvyanddorky@reddit
The price can be jarring at first, but it’s all fresher food, and made when ordered instead of sitting under lamps for hours. I’m glad you enjoyed the floats!

Here in Ohio we have White Castle, made famous by Harold and Kumar in 2004. It is good after you have been drinking all night. Beer and White Castle is very effective for a colon cleanse. It is mostly regional, with locations from New York City to St Louis, and two in Phoenix, AZ. There are also a couple in Las Vegas. And there is one in the south, in Orlando, FL. I suspect that White Castle has been kept out of the South by Krystal which also has tiny hamburgers but without the excessive use of onions.

Kwik Trip is the best! They bread all their chicken by hand. And as a former food safety inspector, I assessed dozens of their stores. They truly care about sanitation and proper procedure, and they do a great job. I have no hesitation eating anything that comes out of a KT kitchen.

I’m not surprised about the kitchen being clean based off my experience with kwik trip bathrooms. They have by far the nicest bathrooms of any gas station

A couple of California chains I haven't seen listed are The Hat and Nations. The Hat is "California-style" pastrami sandwiches as well as other items in the San Gabriel valley, but they are opening a Vegas location. Nation's has burgers and pies in the Bay Area but I haven't had it in decades. Rubio's for fish tacos, but they have closed several locations--I always liked them better than Baja Fresh. Do any other cities besides L.A. and Vegas still have a Fatburger?

Chic-fil-a used to only be in malls (with a few exception) in the South for decades. Then they started to blow up in the 2010s. It was just another mall restaurant like Orange Julius or Sbarros.
Now Bojangles is starting to pop-up outside of the South. I mean who else serves biscuit sandwiches all day?
silkywhitemarble@reddit
The first time I ever had Chic-fil-A was in a mall in Fairfield, CA. It was the only place that had one, and when we moved from the area, it had been over a decade before I had it again when they started opening them here . We have a Bojangles, but it's way on the other side of town so I haven't tried it yet.

Here in Kentucky we have Taco John's. Everybody in the area LOVES it, like given the choice between Taco John's and Taco Bell, Taco John's would be the choice of most. If it were to expand nationally I can see it being a success just based on the Potato Ole's alone.

i'm in the midwest so culver's is the big one here. the butterburgers are legit and their frozen custard is way better than typical ice cream. it's one of those places that actually feels worth the hype. people get pretty protective of their regional spots. i’ve seen visitors get confused by the menu at first but once they try it they usually get it. it's just solid comfort food that reminds me of home.
redditreader_aitafan@reddit
I like QuikTrip gas stations from when I lived where they are and Culver's restaurants but I wish one was closer. I can't think of any other regional chains...
Zealousideal_Sir_264@reddit
Arctic Circle (often known as "arsenic snorkel"). It's like a smaller more ghetto Culver's, but it still kinda slaps. Halibut sammich is pretty good, the mushroom and swiss burger is a wonderful mess served in a coffee filter.
ALeftistNotLiberal@reddit
They’re not regional. They’re a nationwide truck stop chain
Background_Relief815@reddit
Freddy's is amazing. The frozen custard is great and the burgers are great. It took me a while for the fries, but as long as I can add their fry-seasoning, I love them too.
Braums is amazing. The burgers and fries are fine (above average but nothing I would fight anyone over), their chicken strips are very solid, but the dairy (especially milk, and egg nog) are best I've ever had levels. Their bakery stuff (cookies, cinnamon rolls, etc) are better than average for a grocery store too.
Whataburger used to be worth it, but has been bought by a private equity that is just riding out the name I think. Not worth it anymore.
McAlister's is pretty good. It was all a bit overpriced (but delicious) until I had kids. Their kids meals (if you eat in) are very affordable, so it's one of the cheaper places we eat now. The tea is great, the potatoes are good, and the sandwiches are better than their main competitors (like Panera).

Not enough of a fan to geek out overly much by the memorabilia, although I do admit it's kinda cool.

Used to love going to that one when I was at LSU, plus all the Cane's tenders they would have at club meetings and stuff to convince people to go.
Living in California now and got so excited when one opened nearby. Just not as good as I remembered it and way more expensive now.

They moved into my area a few years ago. It gets rave reviews from everyone I know. I just don't get it. If not different seasonings, then maybe different types of sauces. Nope, just one type of chicken tender with one type of sauce. Kind of disappointing. Still good but I was expecting more.
GoonOfAllGoons@reddit
At one time, $5 would get you a 5 piece combo, and the chicken actually had flavor without the sauce.

Taco Bueno is on the decline, but I grew up on their bean burritos and cinnamon chips. Way better than Taco Bell, in my opinion.

New England seems to have a lack of regional chains, and I hate it.
They would tell you that's a positive, because more "local" traffic. Sometimes that's true, but more often than not you're traveling, and your options are either McDonald's/Starbucks/Dominos, or some random generic Grille.
d'angelo, Papa Ginos, idk what else?
Ohio has bomb regional chains. Donatos, Skyline, Rally's, Penn Station.

Braum's is probably the best, as far as fast food goes. They also have a wide variety of ice cream! And they sell it by the carton, too.
Sonic is based out of my state, but they've gone downhill in recent years.

In the last two years even though I am well outside the regions I've gotten both of Whataburger and an In-N-Out and they're decent burger joints but I don't really see what's that special about either one of them. Culver's is a relative newcomer to my area as well probably only been here maybe half a decade and I like Culver's it has some interesting menu options. But again it's just fast food. None of them have burgers that are as good as a restaurant Burger or a homemade burger.

Braums has top ice cream for low prices, but their milk and egg nog have never been beat. Their burgers are good, but I like their "junior" burgers more than their full sized ones. Fries are really good too but need ketchup. Their bakery stuff is also very solid.

The Junior burgers are so good! Definitely better than the big ones in my opinion.
SpaceCowboy73@reddit
Also Oklahoma. Personally I love Braums and think it's one of the best fast food burgers you can get. Cookout in the southeast.
Food for fast food anyway is average tasting but the deal and awesomeness of the menu is what sets it apart and makes it a love here.
I mean sure most places let you order a double cheeseburger but at Cookout the sides aren’t your basic “fries” type of sides. You get two sides and thy are also just more main dish items and I personally get two quesadillas (one chicken and one beef). For $1.5 you can add on a premium milkshake.
So I get a double cheeseburger, 2 quesadillas, a Reese’s cup milkshake and a water for ~$8.
Check out the cookout menu online sometime. You got to order the trays though.

Whataburger isn't my favorite, but it's slightly better than McDonald's, and there's one or more in practically every town in Texas. Their ketchup, original and spicy, is very good and I buy it regularly at the grocery store.

Arizona somehow has almost every regional chain you can think of except Tim Hortons. From In-n-out to Five Guys to even Portillos and Lou Malnatis. The forbidden fruit for the longest time was White Castle, but even that finally made it to the Phoenix area a couple of years ago.
Our own regional chain is a bit of a meme. Here we have Filibertos, but we also have Adalbertos, Rilibertos, Polibertos, and countless other "bertos" restaurants. They're are all functionally the same: 24 hour places for mediocre Sonoran food quick. They're also all franchises rather than chains, so even two Filibertos will have as many differences as a Filibertos and a Rilibertos.
No_Patience_6801@reddit
For me In N Out is the California experience. It’s not just about the burger - it’s still good! - but it’s just an iconic part of Southern California and those vibes that it adds to the experience in a way I can’t verbalize. I lived out there for a long time and live on the East Coast now. We have no In n Outs, we have good burgers, but I miss the “folklore” almost of In n Out and all the secret sauces and terminology. I'd still take Whataburger over McDonald's or BK, but its gone downhill recently. Fast food in general isnt worth it regardless of the chain.
Buckees is more a novelty than anything I care deeply about. 24/7 clean bathrooms are nice, and a 2am BBQ sandwich on a long drive is nice, but its still just an expensive convenience store.

Regionally here in the PNW we have Burgerville, which started out as a retro burger joint with a menu of basic burgers and fries. A few years ago they upgraded their menu with more local ingredients and fancier items that rotate seasonally. They’re all over the place up here from Eugene to Seattle, and while on the expensive side for burgers, pretty good. Best time to eat there is late summer, when the Walla Walla onion rings and burgers are available. Usually get a good berry milkshake that time of year too.
Even more locally here in Portland, Killer Burger has been a quick riser in town. lots of locations in the city, seems to be growing all the time. Burgers are amazing, the Bacon Peanut Butter Pickle Burger is a favorite for a lot of people with a number of other interesting options. You can get a beer there and they don’t rely on ice cream or other gimmicky menu items. Just burgers, fries and brews.
Otherwise-OhWell@reddit
Not my region anymore but Taco John's for the potato oles alone!

Primantis. I’ll take my fries on the side please. Don’t want soggy fries on my sandwich. It’s fine enough but it’s great when you’re drunk late at night.

I feel like Culver's has spread far enough outside of the region that's it's not really our "regional chain" anymore.
I personally love Culver's and think they have the best burgers and (oddly) fish sandwiches of any chain. Frozen Custard is also divine.
For a regional chain that no one outside of Wisconsin's immediate area has, Cousin's subs is fantastic and the best sub chain around.
colormedreamless@reddit
Grocery stores: Market Basket Extreme Local chain: Dippin Donuts
Dunkin literally sucks. I hardly go there anymore
New England doesn’t have many local/regional fast food chains. We used to have Friendly’s but they went bankrupt and their food went downhill 15 years ago.

Casey's gas stations around here. They're the dominant brand in this part of the country and their pizza is amazing!! Most of their stores are pretty clean too.

Dick’s in the Seattle area sucks. Burgermaster and Kidd Valley aren’t bad. Toshi’s teriyaki isn’t consistent but when good it’s great

It’s all about consistency and nostalgia and Dicks has that in spades. Plus they pay their workers well with good benefits.

The Toshi’s are all separately owned and operated. The original Toshi runs his own shop in Mill Creek now. Dicks doesn’t suck, especially when you need food after drinking or while drinking or before drinking, it’s also affordable and quick.
Whatswrongbaby9@reddit
Seattle weekly had some write up about dick’s years ago about best burger in Seattle and the best thing they could say was if you were drunk you could dip fries in shakes. I think in-n-out is overrated and whataburger sucks but dick’s is just some local pride thing for people who don’t travel

They are starting to expand, but Primo Hoagies. Started in Philadelphia, one of the few places you can get a roast pork w sharp provolone and broccoli rabe outside the actual Philly area. I am spoiled for choice with hoagie places (Subway is sub-trash, and the other national chains are iffy at best), this one is the real deal.
StrengthFew9197@reddit
Buc-ee’s is kinda overrated. Don’t get me wrong the bathrooms are clean and there’s lots of gas, but their food is mushy and will give you the worst gut rot. (Exception is in the morning they have a good egg on a biscuit. It will still give you gut rot, but it’s worth it.)
justmyusername47@reddit
Funny you mention the egg biscuit, we felt that was the worst breakfast sandwich we ever had. The smoked turkey is pretty good.
StrengthFew9197@reddit
Oh no!! I thought I found a winner. I’ve only had it once and the biscuit was so fluffy with an over medium egg and some cheese. That place always lets me down
esotericbatinthevine@reddit
I've been to Buc-ee's once, never again!!! It is an overstimulation nightmare. I was struggling so much not to have a meltdown just waiting in the extremely long line for the toilet that I had to leave.
The gas station on the other side of the road had zero wait for the toilets and it was possibly the cleanest bathroom I'd seen in my life. There was also no line for gas.
I was surprised by how much stuff was in what I would think of as a gas station. Hot food bar, lots of cold food, Buc-ee's souvenirs, so much stuff. It was like a decent sized grocery store but with almost nothing healthy. They had a bit of fruit sitting around.

One of the few things I miss about the Mid-Atlantic is the Roy Rogers chain. IIRC, it used to be nationwide, part of the Marriott conglomerate. One fo their former execs bought the brand, and the few remaining locations. He's since expanded in that region, but alas not outside of it. They have really good burgers & chicken, plus a tasty breakfast croissant.
I'm also a big fan of Culvers, and eat there whenever I find a lcoation in my travels. Ditto Pizza Ranch, which is even harder to find.

Five Guys started in Arlington and mogs the entire country's burger chains.
For things that aren't ubiquitous across the country:
We have a chain called Great American Resturants which are like 5 or 6 amazing overlaoping brands around DC.

Wawa in Florida, Buckies and Whataburger from Georgia to Arizona, Culvers in the southeast and the southwest, In-n-out in Texas and Washington, Portillos in Arizona.

Whataburger hasn’t been really regional since they got bought out by private equity years ago, and the quality slide shows.

We have a gas station chain in upstate NY called Stewarts that serves ice cream. The milk is sourced locally and the ice cream plant is local and the ice cream wins awards, it’s really good. The gas stations/convenience stores are a bit run down but in a charming way and we love them. People collect their merch and make cute videos about them online. They’re an institution.

In metro Detroit, we have Buddy's pizza, which was recently owned by a national private equity firm but came back under local control this month. We ordered from them a couple of times recently, and the quality seems to have improved.

Ford's Garage in Dearborn, MI makes my platonic ideal of a cheeseburger, and they're super careful with food allergies. We always sit at the bar, and the bartenders are friendly. Love them.

minnick27@reddit
I don’t know what it’s like there, but it’s like Chick Fil A style lines. Always two lines and people with iPads and no screens. I like it and hate it. Johnny's Pizza House and their version of St Louis style pizza. I grew up in north Louisiana and went to college there, and Johnny's was always a favorite. In-n-Out is just kinda mid level. There are much better.
DizzyLead@reddit
In-N-Out is tops with me. Its appeal is how it’s down to the basics: no “brioche bun,” no “angus beef,” no “truffle sauce”: you get one (or more) beef patties, lettuce, tomato, “special sauce” (that’s really just a variation on Thousand Island), onions the way you want them (if at all), optional pickles, optional slice of cheese, and optional cascabella peppers. All fresh and made to order. With a side of shoestring French fries and a drink. And a meal is nonetheless less expensive than an “extra value meal” at McDonald’s.

HEB is definitely still the best grocery store I’ve ever been to. Always good deals to be had. The free samples spread around made it fun for when I was younger. Just definitely a step up over Walmart, krogers, or Randall’s.
Shipleys donuts. Shit man. Best donuts I’ve ever had. They don’t rely on crazy toppings to be good like so many others. Because their basic donuts are just that good. Melt in the mouth goodness. The only thing I could think of that would be a regional chain in Florida is Publix, and they can kick rocks.
WorriedCress7965@reddit
I do not understand the love the locals have for Publix.
kittenpantzen@reddit
Same. It is overpriced, has proportionally the smallest produce section I've ever seen in an actual grocery store, and I found expired product on the shelves, including meat, multiple times in the short period of time that I gave Publix a chance when we moved here.
And maybe the Pub subs in Florida are fundamentally different somehow, but when I had one of their sub sandwiches when I lived in Georgia, it was on par with Subway. Subway was better at the time than it is now, but still.
WorriedCress7965@reddit
The only redeeming quality of Publix for me is that I can get there without driving on a major road and it doesn't require any U-turns. I can't say that about any other grocery store here. I really miss Smart & Final and WinCo.

Anything that isn't available in every state. I don't have a Bucee's, Whataburger, In-n-Out, or Waffle House in my state for example (and only like 7 years ago did we get our first Chick Fil A).
GiraffesCantSwim@reddit
Yeah, no, I understand the definition of regional. My point is it's hard to know what's still regional when so many businesses are expanding to new areas.
I guess Waffle House and Krystal would be mine, although I hardly ever go to either. Also Sundrop soda. It's hard to find even in different parts of the state.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
Taco John's, its ok. A little better than Taco Bell.

And Zaxby's. For the zalads.

In N Out, it is still fast food, but it's better than McDs or BK, and much cheaper. The fries are meh, but still, I love me some InNOut..... If there's no line.
2dznotherdirtylovers@reddit
In n out is delicious hamburgers. The kids rave about buckees from when they’ve been to texas but I haven’t been.
seancbo@reddit
I grew up with In N Out and it will be my favorite fast food till the day I die. Best burgers that don't make you feel like shit. Best prices. Best fries. That's right, you fuckin heard me, best fries.
Coconut-bird@reddit
Probably Sonny's Barbecue for my area. It's consistent, everyone in my family will eat it without complaint, their mac and cheese is some of the best, and it's good starter southern barbecue and sweet tea for those not from the south.
jurassicbond@reddit
Considering there's multiple Culver’s Whataburger, and Tim Horton's near me NE of Atlanta, are those still truly regional?
Crying_in_99Ranch@reddit
In Dallas, the local chains are Taco Casa, Dickey's BBQ, and Golden Chick. They are all pretty meh. Of course we have all the other national chains and many other regional chains like In-n-Out, Culver's, and Bojangles so it's nice. Layne's is another one from College Station that is just like Canes but I can't get over the A&M affiliation to go there much lol.
DrDentonMask@reddit
In-N-Out is going nationwide slowly, but they are huge here in California. I like their burgers OK. But I like a lot of others' too, like Carl's Jr or even Jack in the Box. In-N-Out doesn't have many options, and their fries are not adequate. And I am a fry man. Those need to be good. Not elaborate, but good.
yeetskeetleet@reddit
White Castle is sorta regional to the Midwest, right? I don’t like it. It’s gross.
Culver’s I’m not a big fan of food-wise, but their ice cream is great.

Living in Florida, I'm in an unusual position; lots of chains have locations here even if they're not really from this region.
Notable regional chains here:
Publix: Wonderful shopping experience, if your wallet can handle it. I go there just for subs, sushi on Wednesday, the olive bar, and the occasional item that isn't available at Walmart or Aldi.
Wawa: Publix subs are 10/10, but Wawa hoagies are easily 9.9/10. It's not "gas station food"; Wawa literally started as a deli and began selling gas, not the other way around. Apparently all of their locations were in or near Pennsylvania until roughly a decade ago, when they started opening locations in Florida.
Culver's: I wish more fast food chains would take chances with different menu options the way Culver's does, even though I order a burger 99.9% of the time I go there.
Zaxby's: Great chicken but they've been penny-pinching lately. I also miss their Insane sauce.
Salem's: The smallest of the chains I list here, this one is specific to the Tampa Bay area, which might make it a local rather than regional chain, but they deserve an honorable mention. I love their gyros.
Faux_extrovert@reddit
I seek out opportunities to go to the Southeast so I can go to Publix. If your grandma isn't around anymore to fry some chicken, Publix is the next best thing.
I also finally had Zaxby's for the first time in forever. It was incredibly salty, more than I remember.

Texas. For me, Taco Casa is the king of fast food tacos. Of course, here we also have real authentic tacos as well.
AstuteCouch87@reddit
In n Out is better than Dicks. Probably just my hometown bias, but after moving to the PNW I still miss In n Out. Dicks is good value, but mediocre food.
Efficient_Advice_380@reddit
I love Portillo's. If I ever have friends or family visiting the Chicago area for the first time, I always take them for Chicago dogs and a chocolate cake shake.
For those who dont know, they literally blend an entire slice of cake into their milkshakes

In the Albany NY area Herbie's Burgers is up and coming and really good (location depending), but they are pricey. Ted's Fish Fry and Mr. Halal are 🔥🔥🔥. We don't talk about Mr. Subb.
Neuvirths_Glove@reddit
Whataburger is my local (Texas) chain but I far more frequently get food from Sonic (out of Oklahoma). This is largely because there's a sonic right by my house.
Sonic is good, not great. They do have some good special items they'll bring out once a while, and using the app sometimes they have some good deals. I go there too much though because at this point the manager knows who I am...
Innuendo64_@reddit
In my hometown exists this chain of fast food restaurants called Beef-A-Roo. It has been around since the 60s and was known for their roast beef and cheddar fries. Locally famous and honestly great back in the day.
Today it's known for trying to expand but forgetting to make sure the food still tastes good. Some of the OG locations are still whipping out decent grub but if you went to one and it wasn't in Rockford, Illinois, I'd like to offer my sincere apologies
SimpleAd1604@reddit
Beef-a-roo sounded familiar and it must be because I lived in Loves Park for a year or two. I never went there, but my friend and I would go to Western Sizzler fairly often.

The concept that so much of the US doesn’t have a reasonably close Waffle House is devastating to me. It feels like it should be as ubiquitous as Krispy Kreme.

S_T_R_A_T_O_S@reddit
I love Whataburger (Pensacola, FL here) but I admit I haven't had it in a while because they gave me somebody else's order last time I went and I'm still a bit salty about it. My friends and I basically lived there when I was a teen, though, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart. The sweet and spicy bacon burger is unequaled across the burger realm
OPsDearOldMother@reddit
Blakes Lotaburger: I love a blake's burrito or green chile cheeseburger from time to time and the seasoned fries are always great. This is the place locals love to say "oh it's gone downhill" but they've been saying that as long as I've been alive and it's pretty much always been what it is--very location dependent.
Dion's: Good subs, the pizza is super greasy but it hits really hard when craved. The Duke City (cheddar, turkey, and green chile) is probably my favorite unorthodox pizza topping combination.
Bob's Burgers: Julians Burgers and More is better. I'll still destroy some taco burgers though.
Mac's Steak in the Rough: Classic but I always feel guilty after. Dirty but delicious.
istheresugarinsyrup@reddit
We have Blake’s where I live in AZ and it’s, hands down, the best fast food burger. No competition. We also have Culver’s, in-n-out, Whataburger, etc. and none of them come close.
teethalarm@reddit
There's not many regional chains in the area I live in, but I travel enough that I've gotten to experience things like In-N-Out, Whataburger, and Buccees. In my opinion they're good enough to stop at if you plan to stop anyway and you don't want the national franchise offerings, but I'm not going out of my way for them or make a special trip just to experience it.

In Southern New England:
Everyone knows Dunkin Donuts but Dunkin fucking sucks compared to Honey Dew. Honey Dew is great and I'd go more often if they weren't all strategically placed to be as inconveniently located as possible.
D'Angelos is better than all of the national sandwich shops like Subway but a step below the 1 off mom and pop Sandwich shops.
I absolutely love Papa Ginos. Puts every national pizza chain to complete shame. But like D'Angelos can't really compete with the good 1 off mom and pop shops.
Bajas is vastly superior to Chipotle in every possible way. I have no idea how Chipotle continues to exist in Rhode Island because of how awful it is compared to Bajas.
Our regional gas station Cumberland Farms sucks compared to other regionals like Wawas or Buckees.
ChutneyRiggins@reddit

Bubbakoos - I’m not entirely convinced that it’s not a money-laundering front, but their food is pretty good!

I like Culvers but people around here act like it's the greatest thing ever, and I just don't see it. It's good like Wendy's used to be. I think part of the charm is that the customer service is really above average and they do fun things with ice cream.

for chains, at one point Sonic was really good. Now not so much. Hardy’s in the SE and Carls in Az were the better hamburgers but they are hard to find. In NC, it’s Biscuitville and Cookout. in east TN, it’s Pals.
Wawa and Sheetz for good gas station food. though I used to love a Rooster at Smoky Mountain Markets in East Tn (I think they all became Pilots) and Krystal’s hamburgers. in Phoenix, El Pollo Loco was definitely a step up from Taco Bell

I was born in St. Louis. As a result one of my most favorite chains is Imo's Pizza, which serves the unique St. Louis pizza. You can't really find an actual restaraunt outside of the Missouri-Illinois-Kansas area.

Burgerville here is alright. Certainly a step up in quality from McDonald's, but also there's higher tier fast food burgers like SuperDeluxe and way better options if you just go to one of the many food trucks, holes in the wall, etc.

mizuaqua@reddit
We have a chain of Americanized Mexican food called Taco Time NW. They use fresh ingredients and prepare the food to order, but pretty bland. It’s not bad for fast food as far as the guilt associated with eating fast food.
And we have a fast food burger chain called Dick’s Burgers. It’s strictly a walk up window serving basic hamburgers, fried, and milkshakes. I hate it.

I don’t mind Whataburger, but prefer our super local burger shop. Though if we’re talking chains that stand out, our local grocery store HEB is insane. Depending on the location, they have fresh salads, soup, sandwiches, pizza, bbq, grilled chicken, and pretty much everything in between. The company also acts as fema in a way, as well as having a great selection, and good prices. Their store brand is sometimes better than name brand!
ash-mcgonigal@reddit

Culver’s truly is one of the best out there in terms of fast food. I don’t think that there’s a better fast food burger currently being produced.
I worked at one of them a long time ago, and it was extremely clean and ran like clockwork. The people I worked with were great as well. I don’t think this is the same for a lot of fast food places and maybe it’s not even the same for Culver’s today, but I’ve held them in very high regard for a long time, and I have the fat belly to prove it

This is a bit of a different take, but there is a very small chain called Noori that only has 6 locations.
Technically one of them is in California, but the rest are in the Midwest. Three in Michigan (where they originated), one in Ohio, and one in Chicago.
They make some pretty solid Korean fried chicken that I’m a pretty big fan of.

Wawa. Convenience store & gas station. It is just part of life. I wish we had Culver's around here.

I find they, in general, are better than the equivalent purely national chains (like Freddie's, Culvers, or Whataburger tend to have a superior burger experince to a Wendy's. Mcdonal or burger king) i think part of that is that as regional chains, they feel a little more willing to a twist or gimmick on the basics and that can make them more appealing even if theyre still a big chain

Since every other business under late stage capitalism is inflated all to hell, In-N-Out is now both the tastiest AND the cheapest fast food burger, by a wide margin on both counts.

Tom Wahl’s has the best root beer, ice cream, and fries to exist. Abbotts Frozen Custard is another favorite.

Burgerville! It's only an Oregon thing as far as I know. They (allegedly) use a lot of local ingredients. I love their food, especially their seasonal items (garlic and rosemary shoestring fries, Marionberry shakes, Walla Walla Onion Rings). They are SUPER expensive for fast food but it's a treat I miss now that I don't live close by.

In and Out, decent prices, delicious food, helpful staff, fast lines.

I live in Phx & we have Culver's, In N Out, Whatburger....and Buccee's opens in June.
We have Tim Horton's too - here it's closer to the other border. 😁🌵

I like In N Out okay. I'm a vegetarian but the grilled cheese (which is just a cheeseburger with no burger) hits the spot sometimes. They're known for treating their employees really well, which is a big plus to me.

Culvers and Portillo's and Farn and Fleet are great

I'm originally from Colorado, for me it's Good Times

Wyoming has a lot of chains exclusive to the state because of the food freedom act.
Among these my favorite is Anong's thai cuisine. They have an awesome all you can eat lunch buffet with curries and other thai dishes. Those curries are freaking awesome.
DCDHermes@reddit
We have Good Times Burgers & Frozen Custard here in Colorado. If I want a fast food burger, I go there over all the other chains.

Culvers is consistently good and is my go-to fast food throughout the midwest US. The fried cheese curds aren't that good though, which is strange since they are based out of Wisconsin.

In-N-Out: good milkshakes, meh food
Curious-End4710@reddit
Cookout is great, in and out is great. Both on separate coasts and not in my area anymore since moving. Big double burger tray with hushpuppies and Cajun fries and a milk shake for $6 back in 2017 was amazing.
Aggressive_FIamingo@reddit
Ours would be Amato's I guess? I've never been a big fan. I know some people are diehards, but they're like a step up from Subway to me. I like their cheese bread though.
greenandredofmaigheo@reddit
Terrible for locals, Chicagoans have a weird obsession Chicago here: with Portillos & Lou's/Giordanos and would walk past a better/just as good place owned by their neighbor that gives back to making the community unique just to sit at the drive through for Portillos. They'd also send visitors to those spots even when they're coming from a city/state where those exist.
Healthy-Meet-8373@reddit
Duchess is fine, definitely one of the lesser known regional chains. They do have a phenomenal hot dog with the works though.
Vegetable-Tea-1984@reddit
I like Culver's and brueggers
TiFist@reddit
Live in a city with a large other-state Expat population and you get a lot of them!
I can get Culver's, In n Out, Whataburger and Tim Horton's within a reasonable drive time.

We have bush's chicken, it's expensive as fuck and gets really hard and waxy - doesn't reheat well
