Happened to me today. Was having lunch in McDonald’s with my husband when I see a man going to the various bins in the store. He had his arm right into the bin. We live in an area with a lot of homeless people and so I assumed he was hungry and looking for food. As he walked past our table I quietly asked him if he’d like some food and if so I’d buy him a meal. He looked at me really strangely and went to sit down with his family (who had a massive tray of food). Turns out he had dropped his wedding ring and was looking to see if it had been lost in the bin when throwing away rubbish. I was absolutely mortified. Luckily he had a bit of a laugh with us about it after but I felt so bad

Do people truly resent going to weddings now ?

I personally feel honoured to be invited to someone’s wedding, hen, stag, baby shower etc. I love the excitement of getting all dressed up and celebrating them and their love. I’m at the age where most of my friendship group are married now, but I miss those summers where we’d have an event or wedding every few weeks

My job is to mentor young people who have been out of education for 5 months or more. Sometimes it’s hard for them to engage but I find asking them about music tends to help. I asked a student what sort of music she liked and she said ‘oh it’s really old and quite niche, you’ve probably not heard of it’. It was ‘she moves in her own way’ by the kooks.

I made a little ‘Covid lock’ system where I’d change from my ‘outside’ clothes to my ‘inside’ ones after my daily walk. It was literally just my porch type thing but I was convinced that it would stop the virus getting in the house. I also weighed out all my dry goods to know I’d have enough to last me for a month or so. I lived alone in a 1 bed studio flat and was furloughed. I rearranged the layout of the flat almost weekly just for something to do. My sleep pattern got so bad from napping in the day that after a few weeks I’d go to sleep at about 9am then wake up at about 5pm every day. It was a strange time

My friend sending me a picture of her dad BATHING THE GROCERY SHOPPING HE’D BOUGHT incase it had the virus on it. This was in the first few days when people didn’t really know what was going on.

Single people with no WFH - how do you manage to do it all?

Sounds a bit overkill but hire a cleaner. We pay £40 every other week (which is 2hrs a fortnight). For us that’s a price of a takeaway. I’d much rather use the money on not having to do anything for cleaning (although I wipe down the bathroom and kitchen every day and hoover every week). If you can afford it I would definitely consider it

New pjs (the softer the better) Going to bed and not setting an alarm for the morning Unpacking a parcel that’s taken ages to arrive (so you forget what’s in it) My daughters laugh The feeling of contentment I get when my daughter rests her head on my chest for a cuddle (she’s 14 months old and just wants to be on the move the whole time so getting a few secs for a cuddle really is the highlight of my day)

What’s the first major news story you remember as a kid?

I vaguely remember a minutes silence for Diana. I was very young though and had interrupted my Dad painting the hallway. I didn’t understand why he was being so quiet so I asked him and he shushed me. Later he explained why he was taking part.

It’s supposed to rain today after 9am, and it’s 7:50am now, so I’ve only got about an hour. Would it be considered rude to start mowing the lawn at 8 am on a Saturday?”

Depends if you want to have a good relationship with your neighbours. Where I live, everyone keeps to themselves and we don’t socialise so I wouldn’t care about pissing them off (mainly as they do things to piss us off all the time), but if you live in a close knit community I wouldn’t do it this early.

We had the fire brigade come into school to tell us what to do in the event of a fire. It terrified me. One of the things they said was to throw a mattress out a window and jump from the window if trapped. At 7 years old I used to try to lift up my mattress every night so I knew if I’d be strong enough to yeet it out the window in the night

What's the worst thing thats happened to you in your birthday?

Posted by happylurker233@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 459 comments

Me2309@reddit

I moved to uni 2 days before my 18th birthday. I was horrifically homesick on the day of my birthday and my phone broke so I couldn’t speak to my parents. My housemates had advertised a house party in our student house (not for my birthday, just as a freshers thing). 300 people saw the Facebook ad and turned up. 2 guys had a fight in the stairs and police were called. I slept with my desk pushed up to my door for fear someone would barge in (I was quite naive and hadn’t really seen house parties before). I woke up the day after my birthday with a man sleeping in my bathroom, and a threat from uni that we were going to get kicked off our course before starting it. Luckily they didn’t follow through with kicking us off but I did move to another accommodation 2 days later
