Which closed British shop would you bring back for 24 hours just to experience it again?

I’d honestly love Woolworths to come back just for one day. There was just something about it. The pick and mix, the completely random stuff you’d end up buying, the slightly messy layout - it just felt different. It actually felt like part of the high street, not just another shop.
Debenhams too. I don’t even know if I massively shopped there, but it felt like the centre of everything. If you were meeting someone, it was outside Debenhams. If you needed a last-minute outfit or a gift and didn’t know where else to go, that’s where you ended up. It made the town feel more… complete?
I’m not even sure if I miss the actual shops or just the atmosphere they gave the place.
davidturner84@reddit
Woolworths. That was a real British staple on our high streets...
Inquisitivemind25@reddit
Borders, easily. I remember sitting in the big one in Cheshire Oaks every now and again and just drinking a hot coffee, reading a book, and watching passer-by’s. It was so special.
I know we have Waterstones, but it’s never quite connected with me in the same way. I still miss it everytime I pass the area.
Illustrious_Drop_634@reddit
You could spend all day in there in Cheshire Oaks Borders. Read every kind of book without buying them. Then listen to CDs in the music section. Then go to the Starbucks (before it was all overpriced and sanitised). Always remember the Harry Potter midnight releases as well.
DoctorRaulDuke@reddit
I was just scrolling to look for Borders. There was one in Stockport - absolutely massive place with a huge selection of books and a mezzanine floor with starbucks on it, so you could watch everyone browsing.
JewelerCurrent5530@reddit
I loved this place. Payday meant I'd head there and spend way too much. Bloody worth it though.
JewelerChoice@reddit
This is mine. The one in Bristol was absolutely massive, with a great cafe. Thanks, deregulated investment!
abonnett@reddit
Fuck me that's a blast from the last. And was hardly expecting to see a picture of Cheshire Oaks/The Colloseum on here! But yeah, that Borders was special. So many fond memories of buying some really important pieces of media there as a kid.
Funny thing is, I feel like of Borders came back nowadays it would make a killing thanks to the physical media revival. Now, I love Waterstones but if Borders were to come back I would make the switch in a heartbeat.
NekoFever@reddit
Such a good shop to browse. I loved the one in Bournemouth. It was vast, had all kinds of obscure genres, big music section, coffee shop, imported magazines. I guess what killed it is it was stupidly expensive and so only good to go in and browse.
Particular-Swim-9293@reddit
The Bournemouth one!
Tildatots@reddit
Used to love the one in Brighton - used to sit on Saturday afternoon in there and read a whole book haha
Visby@reddit
Fuck me, I was literally just thinking this as your comment scrolled into view with the picture and everything
The Cheshire Oaks one was unrivalled - we had a smaller one in Warrington for a while, but as a special treat we'd go to the Cheshire Oaks one as a full-on day out - wouldn't even go in any of the other shops, just sat in Borders for like four hours, it was the best
PersonalityTough6148@reddit
I was talking about Cheshire Oaks borders just this weekend! My sister used to take me as a teenager and I felt like someone from an American film with my Starbucks coffee we'd drink for about 6 hours whilst reading a pile of books.
ParpinOver@reddit
I lived in Warrington at the time, and had very little internet access, so I loved browsing in there, it felt so extensive and varied, like you’d be broadening your mind. Expensive though
mudual@reddit
I do miss Borders in Glasgow, great atmosphere, sold CDs that you couldn’t get in HMV or Virgin Megastores. Plus the one that was in Glasgow, was a good rendezvous point for meeting people / dates (just like Boots corner - IYKYK).
OurBroath@reddit
I used to work in Borders. Best job I ever had
Itstimefordancing@reddit
There was nothing like borders and never will be again!
Majestic_Matt_459@reddit
I felt like i was in an Episode of some glam USA TV show when i had a coffee in there - good times
SIBMUR@reddit
Yes. Me too. We had one in Speke, Liverpool. Loved it.
DeaconBlueDignity@reddit
Fond memory of the midnight launch of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in Speke Borders
TeriyakiNoodleBox@reddit
Was looking for this, surprised i had to scroll so far down for it! Needs more upvotes
Tiger-Bumbay@reddit
It was always a good day out at Cheshire oaks borders, could spend hours in there and if my dad was in a good mood, which he generally is around books, we’d get a hot chocolate. Really miss that place
Mairuu@reddit
I miss past times. A pretty unique chain of shops that sold some interesting things.
JewelerCurrent5530@reddit
I used to work there and it was always exciting when we got new stock. It did go downhill quite drastically before it closed though.
Mairuu@reddit
What went downhill about it?
JewelerCurrent5530@reddit
I think the quality of the designs. When the first catalogues came out I remember there being all sorts of jewellery based on archaeological finds. Towards the end it seemed like it was just a bit basic - more mugs and cds and cheaper quality items. Not so rooted in history.
Mairuu@reddit
Aw, that's a shame :(
Tattycakes@reddit
Such an interesting shop, nothing else like it! I miss them too
stauer88@reddit
Ooo I miss there too! I got some lovely jewelry from there and my Grandma got me a really cute desk mirror. I loved having a mooch around.
twirling_daemon@reddit
Every Christmas/birthday for grandma that’s where I headed
Always reliable and always fun to poke about
Charming_Honeydew_91@reddit
Woolworths for sure.
Serious-Top9613@reddit
WOOLWORTHS!
Yikes44@reddit
I still have some lovely plates and bowls from The Pier. It's been years since it went under but I loved that shop so much.
Cattyjess@reddit
I worked in the Pier until it went into administration. I loved working there. I still have two bowls/plates from there that I bought for uni. My parents still have a massive mirror over their fireplace.
A papasan was my goal chair for when I first moved into my own home. It used to be funny to see the tiny cars people would try and squeeze one into.
rusticusmus@reddit
Oh yes! I loved that shop. I was going to say Past Times but I think The Pier wins.
Positive_Ad3450@reddit
My mum brought me a lovely mirror from their shop for my first home in 2007. I still have it now after 4 house moves. I used to enjoy looking around that shop, it felt posh back then.
Yikes44@reddit
It did, didn't it. I still have a bottle of their ginger peach tea room spray which was what they used in the shop to make it smell so nice.
Oh_wise_one_123@reddit
Woolworths, Blockbusters or Toys "R" Us.
No-Specialist787@reddit
Woolies, without a doubt, it's so ingrained in my youth it's become a setting, background for a variety of recurring dreams I have
Acrylic_Starshine@reddit
Probably a local toyshop or one which died out.
Dunno if Beatties was big out of Sheffield but it sold models and stuff which was cool.
glittermaniac@reddit
Jane Norman. For some reason the clothes there fitted my awkward figure really well. I am petite with curves and most clothes either hang off me or make it look like I have stuffed pillows down my top.
sew_fabulous@reddit
This would be my pick too! I packed away some of mine around 2011 when I was pregnant ready for when I was back to pre-pregnancy size. Instead i gained a tonne of weight. Its taken me almost 15 years but they fit!! Only downsides is, pre-baby i wore 5inch heels everywhere so bought jeans to accommodate, now I wear flats I'm tripping over my trousers legs. I would be stocking up if they came back!

I can't even tell you how much I miss physical Wilkos. My husband is sick of hearing me lament about it.
Lumpy_Progress_8769@reddit
Hang on what. Has Wilko's gone?
crabbycath@reddit
Me and my dad talk about how much we miss wilko every time we talk. RIP wilko miss you every day x
throwaway-15812@reddit
We have a physical Wilko but it’s now just a shit depressing version of the range
DavidW273@reddit
Insonsorely miss Wilko. The one in my city, Sunderland, was right by the park where I usually play Pokémon Go. It had four floors and had near enough anything I could want. USB cable break? Go to Wilko. Need some laundry stuff before heading home? Wilko. Need refreshments or some snacks? Wilko.
Nowhere in my city offers the same quality of products Wilko did or at the same price point. It's either head to the supermarket, an out of town specialist (PC World or Argos, which is also in a supermarket), or head online.
The worst part, in my opinion, is it's Closure feels like that of Debenhams but more widespread (due to places with a Wilko): big buildings standing unused ever since, as nowhere is big enough to need the space.
aldursys@reddit
Funnily enough that store used to be a Binns before it was a Wilko.
Another blast from the past.
DavidW273@reddit
I wasn't aware of that, I've only lived in the city for a little over 10 years. I do remember some Binnes elsewhere and loved them, too!
ReputationApart5983@reddit
What happened with Wilkos was that after Mr Wilkinson died, his family came out like a pack of wolves and systematically looted the business over the years. In its last profitable year it made a profit of about 5 grand.
AggravatingPumpkin72@reddit
Damn...
marlow6686@reddit
The one in St Albans is still open. Although they stopped doing the cleaning cloths I like years ago :(
VitaObscure@reddit
Yes. Instead we get to go to about 5 different shops instead of Wilko's.
-mmmusic-@reddit
yep :/ b&m, boyes, poundland, home bargains and savers
Business_Guard3813@reddit
Boyes usually has everything you need
VitaObscure@reddit
No Boyeziz down south, alas.
nutwiss@reddit
Haven't made it as far as the West Midlands yet. But tantalisingly close.
Bodger81@reddit
Our Wilko became a Boyes. It’s like the Soviet version of Wilko.

tentrynos@reddit
The reverse Tesco.
Historical_Heron4801@reddit
Ugh, I feel your pain. When we lost our Wilko, we "gained a B&M and The Range and I still can't get everything I'd have been able to get in Wilko.
Sophyska@reddit
It’s at least once a month I find myself wondering where to get something and knowing full well Wilko would have had it
Mediocre-Basketcase@reddit
My first thought exactky
Background_King_3551@reddit
My daughter liked the kids sewing kits and used to get a lot of kids art's and craft stuff. I got my daughter some gorgeous wallpaper for her room from there.
Soggy_Detective_4737@reddit
Wilkos was great when it was still Wilkinsons Home & Garden - they genuinely cared about their customers, the quality and price of their goods.
Objectively_bad_idea@reddit
Yeah, Wilko was so good. And shouldn't have failed. Bloody venture capital stuff.
GettingJacked@reddit
Wilko’s head office was a nightmare to work with before any venture capital stuff. Very badly run company for years that deserved to die
OldishWench@reddit
The Range have bought up a lot of their stock, and are maybe even still having the same stuff made by the same suppliers.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Yes this! The Range is the new Wilkos I think.
Capable-Presence-268@reddit
Yah I can still get wilko cleaning wipes from The Range. Think I've also seen some home items but I do miss that store!
aggravatingstranger9@reddit
And the Range is owned by a bloke who is an utter shitbag. I don't go there on principle.
idris_elbows@reddit
It might be rose-tinted glasses, but it feels like the 'Wilko' stuff now is just cheap crap
klymers@reddit
They even reopened a couple Wilkos but they don't seem to stock many of their own brand anymore. The stationery stuff has been replaced by some super quality brand and it pisses me off.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
There are still a lot of Wilko products in The Range. Pet supplies anyway!
honestpointofviews@reddit
We have wilkos where I live!
TurnedOutShiteAgain@reddit
We've got one in St Albans and it's still excellent. It's actually becoming less "The Range"-like too. Less chintz and more cleaning stuff and homeware seems to be the trend recently.
a3poify@reddit
I used to work at that one until a few months before it initially closed and it’s still weird going back in there. Nothing’s quite where it was.
TurnedOutShiteAgain@reddit
The pet stuff is in the wrong place and it annoys me.
Sensitive-Youth-9803@reddit
We do in Rotherham, but it’s not the same as the original Wilko, no £1 drop in bag kettle descaler anymore. Is just The Range with a different label.
Maya_Rose@reddit
Couple of packets of seeds, a new bin, some deodorant and shampoo, a little box to keep your drawer tidy, and some stationery supplies. And a nice lamp.
glasgowgeg@reddit
All of which they sell in B&M and the Range.
Bride-of-wire@reddit
Cuddly toy? Sounds like the conveyor belt on The Generation Game.
Notagelding@reddit
The Range
timlukejones@reddit
Dog food, washing powder and Virgin Cola
glasgowgeg@reddit
They sold basically the exact same stuff that B&M, Home Bargains, and The Range sell, and The Range sell loads of the Wilko stuff anyway.
I don't understand the cultish revenence the UK subreddits have for a shop that's ultimately not much different from its competitors.
Scarboroughwarning@reddit
Wilko's have gone?
PuddingBrat@reddit
Wilkos was the answer the losing Woolies. What do we do now?!
AumNoms@reddit
Came here to say Wilkos. If you had no plans of getting anything, it was such a pleasant trip to go in and just browse. I really miss it !
milrose404@reddit
I miss it so much. I also never shut up about it. Still haven’t found the best places to buy half the stuff I bought there.
Dismal_Low9956@reddit
A lot of their stuff is now in the Range. 😕
sentient_custard@reddit
You know they're online right? Not the same I know but it's an option :)
honestpointofviews@reddit
We have one in the town I live in. I don't know how many others there are
AlgerninaGump@reddit
I am doing some work on the house and am missing Wilko terribly. Run out of sealant or need a couple of screws in a certain size etc. It was just up the high street so didn't need the car.
My plan today was to fit get the wiring for the new extractor fan sorted so I can finish the plastering. I am just short a small piece of cable. Husband has the car so having to rearrange my plans as I cant go get the cable till tonight, I also have to get a roll instead of cutting the length I need from Wilko.
aXiss95@reddit
Yeah, the painting and decorating section was spot on. Their own brand paints were cheap and quite good.
Christabellarina@reddit
Painted my entire first flat in Wilko ‘cream’ and it was so easy.
Capable-Presence-268@reddit
Lol we went for duck egg blue or something like that for our 1st flat and it was by far one of my favourites. Their diy section was fab!
Inevitable-Care@reddit
Great paint. Think I read somewhere on here that it was actually made by Crown.
Inevitable_Bell1826@reddit
I wish they would bring back the old Wilkos stores everything felt so easy to find
ParpinOver@reddit
Our local one had a lady on checkouts who SPOKE A LITTLE BIT TOO LOUDLY and be like “FILL IN THIS SURVEY FROM THE RECIPT AND YOU COULD WIN A WILKO GIFTCARD”. No faulting her enthusiasm!
B&M and Home Bargins are great, but this was a city centre equivalent, you’d go in for three things and leave with ten
rumade@reddit
And you could buy a scratchcard at the till!
SunWarri0r@reddit
All very good quality, too!
rumade@reddit
It was so useful for little DIY bits cos it was on the high street so I could safely walk or cycle there. The only other option for same day stuff would be the big B&Q on the industrial estate, and it's not accessible easily without a car
Sackyhap@reddit
I miss the homebrew beer section in wilko. I’ve never seen another shop sell homebrew supplies but they stocked in most stores for some reason.
BeaksFalcone@reddit
There's still one in great Yarmouth, in the mall
Zealousideal_Pop3121@reddit
We still have ours but I haven’t been in since the range took it over (it’s in the city centre and I don’t go in that often 😂). I always felt it was a pale imitation of Woolworths but when it went under I was sad. Was great for Christmas stuff.
Busy-Wing-6115@reddit
Actually, The Range do have some Wilko products.
JoseJalapenoOnStick@reddit
I like the range because most have small Iceland's in them which is usually quite compared to the dedicated stores.
Grotbags_82@reddit
I worked in Wilko's before it went under, only a handful of hours each week but I took home zero pay as everything I earned I spent on products in the shop. I loved how much variety they had.
dcwatkins@reddit
our Wilko's closed briefly and then reopened when the range bought them out. it's now just the range with Wilko's branding. huge loss
PeterG92@reddit
Just give me the pick and mix back
DeirdreBarstool@reddit
There’s not a week goes by that I don’t mention to someone how much I miss Wilko.
Need a bulb? Battery for the bathroom scales? Bedsheet? Cactus? Some nails? Wilkos always had me covered.
I don’t have anything else like it near me, living in a city centre with no car. No Range, B&M or Home Bargains. I used to be able to call into Wilko on my way home from work.
Feel like shit man, just want it back.
VioletMaria89@reddit
I could have wrote this, last line included haha.
Tall_Whole_4534@reddit
Wilkes still exists in my mind. It was a life saver during covid. It was one of the only retail shops open.
LadyMirkwood@reddit
This is my one. Wilko's has no equal, fro range, quality or price.
I miss it
Diddleymaz@reddit
Home Bargains
LadyMirkwood@reddit
Not the same.
topcottager@reddit
Boyes or Yorkshire trading company are almost identical to what Woolworths was. Apparently they don’t exist in the south.
VioletMaria89@reddit
Never heard of them and I’m in Yorkshire!
maldennor@reddit
My dad brews his own wine from the fruit he grows, and always swore by the bricks of wine yeast he got from wilkos.
I used to work in brewing, and would always roast him for using the same cheap yeast. Yet, for a dried wine yeast that came in a brick, it seemed to work well regardless of the fruit or veg he chucked into the fermenter,
AWhistlingWoman@reddit
Same!! And I cannot find anything equivalent. I mean, I can, but not quiiiiite
LadyBAudacious@reddit
I think B&M is an acceptable substitute, but I don't feel comfortable about buying food items in there.
Maybe I'm just weird.
And Dunelm isn't bad, either.
Mccobsta@reddit
Wilko was mint you could actualy get house ware stuff with out having to drive to a fucking retail park out of town
MerlinTrismegistus@reddit
Seriously where do you go fpr bulbs if you're in town these days? Those guys had a pimpin bulb selection. I still look at my rubbish little Wilkos hammer we bought qhwn we moved into our first place. Pride of place in my rubbish little toolbox
Killthomas7@reddit
There’s been so many times since it shut that I’ve needed something and though Wilko would have had it

sharps2020@reddit
I'm sure I read that they're opening some new shops, not as many as before though.
Livid_Painting2285@reddit
Same! It had every random thing I might need! And I loved their kitchen stuff, so cheap but really nice.
Bodger81@reddit
It’s my Roman Empire. At least once a week I think “you know where I need to go for that? Wilkos”.
Spiritual-Touch908@reddit
Agreed. I'd pop in on a morning dog walk to get cleaning stuff/toiletries/a light bulb. The dog would have a biscuit, maybe I'd buy him something, it was great.

Maplin - lots of good tech and parts
Northwindlowlander@reddit
A quick reminder that Maplin was actually making money right to the end- it was only making a "loss" because of the interest it had to pay on its repayments to its vulture capitalist owners- they literally bought the company with borrowed money then put all of the borrowing costs + extra directly onto the company itself.
Course by the last days the shops were all understocked and dated and falling apart but that was only because every penny they made got sucked out by the vampires and they weren't even allowed to spend what the company needed to function.
Born-Net4017@reddit
Happens all too often, just look at Asda and Morrisons at present. Same thing going, asset stripping and leveraging it to the hilt. We will be adding both of them to this list in 10 years.
I miss Woolies, it was magical at Christmas. I miss EB (what Game became) Tower records, Global Video, Blockbusters.
TBH the internet made everything shit.
inevitablelizard@reddit
This seems like something which shouldn't be legal. What valid reason is there for this arrangement to exist. I have heard of this ruining other companies too.

Every kid I knew had their diary that gave you free batteries.
No-Locksmith6662@reddit
Oh I miss Maplin shops so much. Online is just not the same.
I’m currently after a very specific length of ethernet cable, 25m is too short but 50m is too long and I’ll end up with about 20m of cable spare if I cut it down. In Maplin you could go in and get exactly the length you wanted.
RBWatermelon@reddit
Lots of electrical wholesalers do CAT cable and sell by the meter now - try your local TLC or similar
abw@reddit
You should do what I did and buy a 100m drum of cable, a box of 100 connectors and the fancy crimping tool.
Then you can make your own cable to the exact length and have the remaining drum of cable, box of 98 connectors and fancy crimping tool taking up space in the cupboard under the stairs for the next 20 years.
Saintly-NightSoil@reddit
eBay ettt mannn, or be nicer and give the other poster first refusal! Hehehe good on ya for doing it for real tho, seriously! Fiddly
l33yds@reddit
Make your own, it's really easy.
No-Locksmith6662@reddit
I would. But I don’t want to end up with a load of spare cable that I’m never going to use. Maplin used to cut you exactly the length you needed with minimal overage.
LegendEater@reddit
I was teaching NVQs at the end of Maplin's tenure, and I was about ot get a promotion and run the whole Maplin apprenticeship programme for the whole UK. It fell through, my job followed, and I worked in a pub for 6 months. Fuck Maplin.
p1971@reddit
specially old school maplin before they started selling lots of gadget tat which you can get elsewhere ...
MoodyBernoulli@reddit
There was something about knowing your newborn to walk in and get a really obscure cable that same day.
I know we’ve got Amazon prime nowadays, but if you’re impatient like me sometimes you just need something within 30 minutes.
mistakenforzen@reddit
Used to be and to walk into Maplin and buy, like, a single resistor or capacitor for a few pence. That's just not possible anywhere anymore. The only place you can buy stuff in smallish quantities now is eBay.
Devious_Pudding@reddit
Same with obscure battery sizes.
That one time I needed AAAA batteries. Straight into Maplin as I knew they'd have them.
bill_end@reddit
I wouldn't worry too much. Plenty of vibrating butt plugs on the market that'll take AAA which you'll get easily from the corner shop, should they run out after a long session
Coralwood@reddit
And you'd come out of there with something you didn't know you needed.
Pilchard123@reddit
Or it's a Saturday afternoon, you have something cracked open/half-built on a bench, and you just need this one little component to finish a project that you won't have time for tomorrow (and Amazon probably won't do next-day for it, and even if they do it'll probably be fairly late in the day) and then it'll be Monday and you definitely won't have the time or energy to work on it until at least the next weekend (oh, by the way, your partner's sister is coming to visit next weekend, remember?).
Chase_Analyst@reddit
That’s something about the US I’m super jealous of. The UK barely has any stores like that
Killthomas7@reddit
Strange take but I would rather go out of my way to a physical store and have it there and then than wait even just 24hrs for Amazon to deliver
p1971@reddit
yeah... and some of the little project electronics and stuff were fun ...
I'm messing about with raspberry pi / esp32 stuff ... could do with some little bits but none of them are worth ordering over the internet unless I have a bulk order to do
ParsnipFlendercroft@reddit
When was that? I used to go in the 80s and it was full of gadget tat even then. Disco lights, smoke machines, stupidly big speakers…..
SilverellaUK@reddit
My husband is sure it was the huge amount of gadget tat stock in every shop (and the number of shops they opened over a short period) that sank them. I remember going to their warehouse unit trade counter in Wombwell before they opened the shops.
nixie-14@reddit
The original Maplin circa 1970’s-mid 1980’s was just main order. I recall they had a founders shop in Essex and maybe one in London somewhere but otherwise you had to send off for their big fat catalogue and order by post. Oh, the days of waiting for the postman! I never really used their stores-the stock selection wasn’t great and I had access to a proper old school electronics shop in central Liverpool. Then Amazon and other online retailers came along and did it better and cheaper. Now I get most of my electronic components from Aliexpress.
autofill-name@reddit
~~They didn't sell to you unless you were VAT registered I seem to remember~~ That was RS
Noon_Specialist@reddit
I always found them overpriced.
AutoGeneratedUser359@reddit
It was SOOO expensive though.
SunDriedFart@reddit
Agree. Everything they sold I’m now forced to get online. It’s a pain in the arse. I didn’t lol how my local maplins had someone stood at the door greeting customers though.
imtheorangeycenter@reddit
I needed a single 1k resistor recently, I'm now left with 99 spare.
So that'll last 99 lifetimes.
bartread@reddit
RS Components are also good for that sort of thing but there are so few of their branches left that you'd be incredibly fortunate to have one nearby.
VermilionKoala@reddit
You'd probably have to buy 1000 from RS, not just 100.

jamesckelsall@reddit
I see you've never been to Cex...
Icy-Astronomer-8202@reddit
I think they pipe it into stores
International_Goat31@reddit
You joke but they really are shipping it by the boxful. The outer rubber of old apple headphones and charging cables really does smell like this when it breaks down, and it breaks down faster than basically any other cables out there in my experience. The only thing that comes close is cheap XLR cables when they die basically the same way.
If you had a box of them sitting around somewhere warm for a few years, which wasn't at all uncommon in a Maplin or Cex (especially after apple moved on from that wide-flat connector after the iPhone 4S and there were just thousands of those things sitting around) the whole area would start to stink like something between fish and BO. The smell would linger even after you got rid of the cables. Awful.
Glittering_Seat9677@reddit
i've been into four different cex stores from glasgow to truro and they ALL HAVE THE EXACT SAME PISS SMELL
RobotXander@reddit
The CEX in Inverness actually smells of Piss and BO

Can concur. Used to work in one and you could get into the shop floor after a break and know which regular had been in 15 mins prior. This is no exaggeration.
Nestanesta@reddit
I went to Maplins near Liverpool Street station to look at CCTV cameras. The salesman asked me if I was burgled recently - the previous week I was burgled!!!
I asked him how he knew and he said that everyone comes to Maplins to buy CCTV after they were burgled.
quantum_splicer@reddit
How do you think they keep the CCTV selling going, the connection between the burglery and the sales is an circle
ConduciveMammal@reddit
Fucking loved Maplin. Never bought anything but always enjoyed looking around it.
BassPhil@reddit
Canny fella from the maplin near me bought some stock and plinths in the fire sale. Still running a little shop 3 doors down from the old premises; now occupied by a massive desert "restaurant" in which I'm yet to see more than 2 customers at a time. Maybe they're part of a government initiative...
I buy my random tech stuff from clever ex-maplin dude whenever I can.
Bald_Plonker@reddit
This and RadioShack, I think the nerdy old fart I've turned into would have appreciated them a lot more than I did when I was young.
Diligent_Leopard7739@reddit
I worked in a maplin as a student and really didn't get on with how predatory the sales tactics were. Each staff member had a high sales target for the week and you were harshly pulled up if you weren't on track.
This meant that people were always upselling unnecessarily especially to less informed customers like the elderly. They would also push things like expensive HDMI cables at ~£50 and bring the customer to the tills immediately so they were pressured into buying.
I didn't get on with it so quit and stopped going there even though it was the best way to get electrical components etc.
SirDiesel1803@reddit
As a big time walker with the old school 3.5mm headphone user. Maplin was a god send. 2 pound for a cheap pair buy on my birthday id splash out and buy A 40 english pound pair.
Bloody Bluetooth standard connection. God I miss my Google 4 s phone.

TawnyTeaTowel@reddit
True - there’s nowhere else where you can be properly patronised about your cable choices by a man who sells disco equipment.
Majestic_Matt_459@reddit
And staff that would say "Dont buy that its crap - Here's what you need" (often downselling not up-selling) and then giving you a little guide on how to set it all up and get you started
And if they didnt have somethign they'd tell you where you could get it
God they were the best nerds that ever lived *looks wistfully at that router he still has just for keeps
Ok-Explanation1990@reddit
Yep. And before that, Tandy.
ardcorewillneverdie@reddit
Maplin was good, although a lot of their stuff was pretty pricey and of questionable quality. It did get me out of a pickle or two though over the years.
Used to live near a proper old skool electronics shop where the old blokes running it wore proper shop coats and had big buckets of individual components which you could buy one at a time if you really wanted to. They knew their shit inside out and would give you good advice on basically any project you were working on. I miss that place!

Longjumping-Cod-6164@reddit
Same. I’m a hypocrite because I’m glued to my phone but I miss the days when you had to make a trip of getting something to watch. It would end up being entertainment itself because it took up a good chunk of the evening getting there, choosing a film, buying snack, the anticipation on the way back etc.
Now I end up scrolling Netflix for an hour before settling on something I don’t like and end up turning it off after 15 minutes and going back to my phone.
I do miss my attention span when I could watch TV and be fully engrossed without feeling bored if my hands aren’t scrolling.

Second‑screen TV is absolutely a thing now. Shows are being written with simplified plots and characters spelling out the obvious, because producers know a big chunk of the audience is half‑watching while glued to their phones or struggling to focus.

Blockbuster! How did I forget this. Sunday night, dreading school the next day, and a movie to help you pretend the weekend wasn’t almost over.
I still remember the day when my mum wouldn’t come with me so she let me ride my bike all the way into town alone so I could get something to watch. The excitement the whole 30 minute bike ride, the 20+ minute browsing agonising over which movie to get as, only to finally decide and be refused rental because I picked a 12 rated kids movie and he didn’t believe I was 12.

They're not closed, but they're a ghost of their previous selves, so I'd love an early 00s era HMV and Game (or, even better, its predecessor, Electronics Boutique) before their business models became untenable.
Successful-Grand-549@reddit

Then I would swing by Our Price where the singles were more often 99p in the week before they charted.

Game and Electronics Boutique aren't related companies!
The_Gene_Genie@reddit
Founded in 1990 by Peter Wickins and Neil Taylor, Game had grown to 86 stores across the UK when it was acquired in April 1999 by The Electronics Boutique PLC, the UK franchisee of Electronics Boutique.[4] In April 2002, its parent company was rebranded as The Game Group PLC and all Electronics Boutique stores were rebranded to Game.

BHS still existing in 2026 as an online store is my biggest surprise so far this week. At least they focused on the best department.
Still kinda miss the one in my home town. It’s a Dunelm now, which is fine enough but it’s not the same, especially the cafe. Haven’t been back since they had the fire, but no doubt it’s the same cold sterile interior.

WaltzFirm6336@reddit
It’s not the same company. The name/branding got sold when they shut down.
JeffersonRP96@reddit
No I figured, just more so that someone else would want to trade under that brand name after all the bad press surrounding their demise.
Then again, it’s not like the stores themselves were viewed negatively. After looking into it, it seems like a business in Qatar bought the name and operates a single physical store in Doha, so it’s not like previous reputation is going to matter much in that market anyway.
Alternative-Sea-6238@reddit

Yeah but British Home Stores was spelt British Home Stores. This one is spelt British Ome Store, they are a H from Home and an S from the end of Stores.

Kwik Save, pure vibes
Longjumping-Cod-6164@reddit
I only ever went in one but did every Kwik Save have other things in it like a cafe, maybe some sort of timpsons type shop? I’m going back about 25 years in my memory here hence I can’t remember well but I know for sure there was a cafe in mine and a kids’ clothing shop but I can’t tell if it was a Kwik save within a very small shopping centre or if they were part of Kwik save itself even though I remember distinctly there being an entrance to the Kwik save.
The place has long been bulldozed and something else built in its place so I can’t even check on maps.
I don’t remember it being a shopping centre and we didn’t have any shopping centres in the town at the time, and I remember the big sign out front saying Kwik Save but it definitely had about 3 orher shops and a cafe in the one I used to go to.
Mission_Beach_7098@reddit
A lot of them had concessions like that but varied by store depending how big they were. The fruit & veg + butchers & deli were concessions in my local one & I'm pretty sure you paid separately for anything you bought from them.

Safeway, just because I went on a school trip there and it was the first time I tried a kiwi and we realised I was slightly allergic to them. Oh my gosh, I remember going to Safeway (in Borehamwood) at infants school. We all got paper deli counter hats and took a load of veg back to school and made a really flavourless soup. It was 1990, so flavour hadn’t been invented yet.

You could walk through to the market from Woolies as well, which I'd also like to experience again.
Also Virgin Megastore in Cardiff, and Howells and David Morgan. I have mixed feelings about Debenhams, I worked there and it was shit, but I've felt sad to see it being demolished.
Actually, just make the centre of Cardiff how it was 20 or 30 years ago, and make me 20 years younger at the same time :D
RunOutOfNames@reddit
Also a fan of David Morgan, it was a beautiful, gloriously chaotic mess of Victorian architecture.
tar-mirime@reddit
My first Christmas 'do' in my last job was in the David Morgan cafe when they were closing. I also remember Debenhams staying open late, last minute having twisted the arms of staff to get them to stay, due to the, iirc, 'aggressive marketing' of a competitor. I was so glad to be out of retail at that point.
David Morgan was a maze of a building and I loved it. It was nice to just have a wander round. Loved the little David Morgan in Penarth as well, the cafe there was lovely. Wouldn't mind being able to go back there as well.

Oh you are kidding! I just went to the shopping center in Epsom this weekend for the first time (moved down to Surbiton way 6 years ago). Been to the high street bit a few times before, but not that far up.

BoomalakkaWee@reddit
Yes, WH Smith's took over the old John Menzies premises in the Ashley Centre in the mid-1990s. Before that it had a much smaller site in the High Street.
You can see the John Menzies signage in the ninth photo down on this local history page, opposite another long-departed business, Mothercare:

In Scotland, where I’m from, John Menzies was the prevalent store, and were replaced by WH Smith’s. Tower Records. When I was 17 I worked evenings - 5pm to 9pm. I was paid weekly. When I finished at 9pm on a Friday I drove the 15 miles to Tower Records in Glasgow City Centre which closed at midnight. I spent an hour or two just listening to music and picking out a couple of CDs. I spent so many happy hours in there.
catseyesuk@reddit
C&A from the 80s for the Italian and French style clothing we thought was way to colourful and weird.
SpudFire@reddit
I'd say Woolworths too. Not because nostalgia makes it seem like the best shop ever, but just to see how much of the stuff in there is now covered by the likes of Home Bargains/B&M/The Range or even supermarkets, and how much wouldn't survive in todays world such as CDs.
Longjumping-Cod-6164@reddit
Maybe it’s nostalgia talking but there was something slightly more elegant about Woolies that B&M/Home Bargain just doesn’t compare to.
I don’t know, it just felt a little more… organised(?) somehow. I can’t explain what I mean but I remember woolies just feeling a bit more classy than the likes of B&M even for a discount/cheap shop. Maybe it was just better laid out or had better attention to small details but B&M and Home Bargains have a vague warehouse feel that Woolies didn’t have (at least not to me but I was a kid last time I stepped in Woolies so maybe I can’t remember too well).
stauer88@reddit
Could it be that the shelves weren't very tall? I feel like I could nearly see over them as a kid.
Longjumping-Cod-6164@reddit
I honestly don’t remember the shelves for the most part. I do remember the toy section was floor to ceiling in toys though.
ChallengeFirm8189@reddit
I feel this way about most shops. Shops used to feel more premium and now they are just the bare minimum
UuusernameWith4Us@reddit
The high street being in the shit and the economy being shit in general. All the niceness has been snipped away from the average persons shopping experience to reduce costs.
Longjumping-Cod-6164@reddit
I’m glad someone understands what I mean. Shops now just feel thrown together whereas Woolies felt cultivated, for lack of a better word. As if there was a quiet pride when it was built whereas B&M etc just feel thrown together.

Racing_Fox@reddit

Majestic_Matt_459@reddit
My first ever big purchase was at Dixons - it was a Hi-fi system (possibly Aiwa - ity was definitely beginning with A) - would have been about 1983 and it had bronze on black looks and the cassette deck flap opened slowly and closed slowly - oh it was a thing of beauty - and it was £400 which was about most of my first pay cheque (lived with Mum so no rent)
I had my £400 ready and the guy said "Oh no - you dont have to give us that - just pay £8 a month and you can actually have £500 to spend so you've got £100 leftover after the hi-fi" What magic is this? I thought

Obscure and not actually British, but Clas Ohlson. I think at one time they had 6 UK stores, but announced in 2018 they were closing all except Reading. The Reading store was finished off by the pandemic and shut in 2022.
If you think Wilko was good... In Clas Ohlson you could buy a crowbar in any size, the biggest was impossible to lift, it was so huge. You could buy a stunt kite (say that carefully.) You could buy rope as thick as your arm. You could buy a ukulele. You could buy a lightbulb. You could buy bin bags. Absurdly powerful torches. Toys. Hats. Laundry drying racks. Plastic bags. Toolboxes. Bluetooth speakers. Daim Bars.

Woolworths - When it was closing, I understood it but I was too young to take it all in and appreciate it and how much I'd miss it. It's the fact that you could go in and get pretty much everything. Toys, books, DVDs, CDs, games, home stuff, clothes, gardening stuff, small appliances, stationery, food, etc. The closest we have now is B&M or Home Bargains but it's just not the same.
Virgin Megastore/Zavvi - I remember heading into Central London on a Saturday and spending hours walking up and down the aisles of Virgin/Zavvi and HMV just looking at the DVDs. I'd always come home with 3 but I had to make them worth it in terms of quality and price so I spend so long browsing. No streaming back then.
Modelzone - I never bought stuff here because I was too young. I just loved looking at the stuff they had. I was hoping that once I was old enough, I'd be there all the time getting different models but they closed around the time I turned 21.
A local Disney store - I know the one in London exists and I have been several times but I miss having a quiet local one right next to me.
rwinh@reddit
Homebase, which might be a bit controversial but their sales were unmatched by the competition like B&Q - garden range sales, paint, outdoor furniture...
They were often labelled as expensive but that's what you get if you don't do your homework, and buy during peak seasons. When a season ends the bargains come out.
I bought an 8 seater table with 10 chairs for £150 with cushions, loungers for £16 each (and they're still going strong), two mature grape vines for £80, two sure conditioning units for £350 and painted every room in my house including the ceilings for less than £100 thanks to Homebase.
B&Q have never done a comparable set of sales, and garden centres for pots, tools and weirdly plants have been a bit mixed.
Not having it there for Christmas last year was weirdly sad and difficult, especially for the after Christmas sales for lights, baubles etc.

Weigh and Save - not sure I'd eat anything from there now, the idea of those massive barrels and how many people have been elbow deep in them gives me the heebie jeebies, but I'd love to experience it again. Bit specific, but Olympus Sports on Lakeside Retail Park. It had a little stream/pond running through it with a bridge over it, and loads of camping tents you could hide in.
That or a day in early-era Bluewater so I could go in Warner Bros, Lillywhites, Muji and Free Spirit and then have a burger in Tootsies. I was 13 when it opened and it was just the best place to spend a Saturday as a teenager.

Before it was closed down, the Virgin Games Centre on Oxford Street was amazing for me in the late 80s. Nearly every RPG available off the store shelf. Probably blockbuster. I miss the days where going and choosing a movie and then picking up beers ready to order takeaway at home was part of THE experience.
Also there used to be a local shop when I was a teen called Games world. I would love to revisit it as it was loaded with new and used games, consoles and air rifles, before they became so heavily regulated.
Both remind me of good times.
Longjumping-Cod-6164@reddit
Right? The movie wasn’t the whole event, it was the routine of getting on your bike (I was a kid then) with your best friend, the anticipation as you took the 30 minute or so ride there discussing what sweets you’d get, spending ages choosing a movie you both wanted to watch, spending a fiver on snacks which got you a lot back then, then the ride back home with your movie and goodies, and then by the time you’d watched the movie it was time for bed.
I miss those days.

I'm sure you're looking for a chain but regardless I'm going to say JKL computers in Uxbridge. Used to love the atmosphere in there and perusing the 8 and 16 bit games back in the day. Also bumped into Heinz Wolff of Egg & Spoon fame in their one time and snagged his autograph.
I suspect a lot of people could understand the nostalgia and replace 'JKL computers' with ''

In the early nineties I went in to buy my sister some perfume for her Christmas. I'd read that it was an older brother's duty to buy their younger sister their first bottle of perfume. The ladies in the section were all fantastic with the general sentiment being "Och, Bless" when I explained my needs to them. I ended up getting Sunflower by Elizabeth Arden which my sister loved. It's one of my all time favourite shopping memories.

MVC, but only if I get to see the people I worked there with again. Can't think of one person I wouldn't like to see again even just for a chat and see how they got on in life.

Woolies in the pick n try section or the records and 50p a single.
Tandy and all the tech you could get and when I made the computers run faster and screwed up there demos.
Just to go and buy something for the prices that they were when they shut down. Couldn't afford a Tandy computer then or now they were over priced then. But maybe get a CoCo or two and keep them unused.
Puzzleheaded_Turn887@reddit
BHS, awww what a great store and nice cafe too.

Wilko. I would spend so much money on all the random small bits of house stuff I don't want to order off Amazon or schlep out to a retail park to get.
death-in-tipton@reddit
Games workshop when they first opened , not the overpriced store it is now.
mistakes-were-mad-e@reddit
I will take Games Workshop in the mid 90s.
Red jumpered staff. Blister packs.

Woolies. No question.

Eden Lilley in Cambridge because I’d like to go back and buy the rocking horse that 55 years ago, I told the sales assistant I would save all my pocket money, and come back and buy. Mind you it was very expensive then and with inflation, I still might not be able to afford it!

Topsoft in Darlington.
It was a small computer games shop in the late 80's and through the 90's. It had two branches, one in Darlington, one in Middlesbrough.
And it sold first 8-bit games, then 16-bit, and young me absolutely loved it. They would let you play the game you were thinking about buying before you pulled the trigger and spent all your hard earned paper money.
I didn't appreciate it at the time, and miss it now it's gone.

Aww, I miss Woolworths. I mean, when I was a young child it was like the local Hamleys but by the time I got to high school it did get a bit shit...but, I just miss going there and always finding a fun and exciting toy
Ok_Light_7227@reddit
Hamleys from 30 years ago would be good as well, before it got turned into a junk store tourist trap.

Westgate. Had a great cafe

If Woolies opened again I'd buy another tin-opener, the one I bought in 2001 is only just giving up the ghost.

Gamestation. Staff were gamers, they sold memorabilia as well and it just had a better feel than Game ever did

I remember my granny allowing me to run rogue on the Woolworths pic and mix without her realising that the price was per the kg, got to the till and it was £25 something. The look on her face at the till said enough, the cashier gave us it for free. 😂😂
trustmeimabuilder@reddit
Speaking as an appallingly bad Christmas shopper, I could always stagger into Woolworths after a Christmas Eve lunchtime session and find something for the whole family.

Isaac Walton in Newcastle - loved it as a child. My school blazers came from there, school dress fabric, my gaberdine raincoat for school. My grandma bought her corsets there. It was quite posh.
redredd1t@reddit
Off topic but I genuinely hate how Covid ruined everyone because why are there rarely any shops open for 24 hours or Atleast till after 11😭✌🏾 it also feels like a lot of shops are closing down or getting bought out
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
I think online shopping added to it massively.. high streets can’t compete anymore.
tdrules@reddit
Supply chains got really really good too. Brick and mortar can’t compete unless you’re niche.

Next day delivery.. shopping right from the couch!
Wilko’s for example.. everything they sold you could buy much cheaper online! And I loved that shop.. but who has money to waste?
tdrules@reddit
It’s why B&M owners are offloading sites for developers, the writing is on the wall for these weird general stores.
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
I love a walk round bnm too! They built one last year near me.. right next door to a home bargains!
It’s literally empty everyday.. like a ghost town! Because it sells the exact same stuff as the shop next door.

Jolly Giant - a big toy store in Scotland; kinda like Toys R Us in the 80s/90s.
Loved getting Mighty Max figures from there.

My local independent computer store in the 1980's. It was a Mecca and the owners were very cool and generally chain smoking lol!
