What has recently made you feel incredibly old?

The wife and I just watched Independence Day. Which holds up surprisingly well by the way.
At the end my wife commented that’s it’s a good film for one that’s so old and I said yeah 1994. Then it appeared on the screen and it was released in 1996. My brain then realised that it was 30 years old.
I told my wife and she stopped in her tracks and looked horrified. 30 years old. Independence Day.
We’re “only” 43 but good lord I don’t know that I can take that film being that old. What has made you feel ancient of late?
you_aint_seen_me-@reddit
Younger than my boss, by quite a few years, who is older than his boss by a couple or so. Yeah, she's young for a C-Suite, but I still feel 'mature'.
SoggyWotsits@reddit
Realising that I’ve been working at the same place since before some of the new employees were born.
montyrattus@reddit
I feel old when I find out I am working with people not even born when I left school in 2000.
W51976@reddit
I was 24 in the year 2000, and now it feels weird that 2000 is equal distance between 1974 and 2026. Working with people who young then is one thing, but when it’s people who weren’t even born, it just shows you how time flys.
YchYFi@reddit
I was 11 then and was in year 7.
W51976@reddit
Born in 1989? lol even that age group is starting to feel old.
YchYFi@reddit
Yes 37 next month.
Best part is I have been telling people I was 37 since my last birthday and only realised the other day I had been ageing myself up.
Because what is time these days?
W51976@reddit
Oh stop, I’ll be in a retirement home before we know it lol.
YchYFi@reddit
You are closer than I am. And it looks like it might be a good time.
W51976@reddit
I’ll let you know how it goes in 2046 lol.
YchYFi@reddit
Only 20 years from now. The last 20 just flew by.
W51976@reddit
Thanks for the cold reality check lol
YchYFi@reddit
It's mine too. Don't sweat it. We are sound.
W51976@reddit
That’s the way the cookie crumbles 👍
W51976@reddit
Happy birthday next month, I turn 50 this Sunday lol.
YchYFi@reddit
Thank you. And I hope it's a good 50. Friends get fewer at this age but you spend quality time with those that mean the most I find.
W51976@reddit
Yes. Less acquaintances, and more quality time with people who share your interests.
W51976@reddit
Cheers mate👍
W51976@reddit
I have one or two close friends now and a loving partner from the last 12 years. That’s all I need, then I just fill
My time with hobbies.
The circle of friends I had back in the 2000s and early 10s came to an end when I stopped going out, and they all moved on.
W51976@reddit
It’s a long time ago to be fair.
YchYFi@reddit
It was a great time before phones were as they are now. We had it good.
W51976@reddit
Yes those early 00s years were still a time when it really was just your immediate environment. There was no connection to people elsewhere in the world.
You left home and nobody knew where you were.
YchYFi@reddit
I miss that feeling. It was quite freeing. You weren't on someone's beck and call.
W51976@reddit
Yeah and internet is as very slow back then. It was still very much like the 80s and 90s until about 2005.
W51976@reddit
I have started to live like that recently. I turn my phone to airplane mode when I’m in the park and don’t want to be disturbed.
Christian-Metal@reddit
And working with people born in 2006. I was 21 then and that was only about 6 years ago. And yet here they are, these individuals who are equals with me at work (meant in a positive sense on their abilities). I really struggle to get my head around this.

They will think the same in the mid 2040s.

MaltDizney@reddit

WeeBo2804@reddit
A lot of my co workers are much younger than me. One today commented that I couldn’t possibly be old enough to be her mum. Well, actually, some of my tattoos are older than you and I could have conceived you in the first year of my relationship with my now husband- so yes, I very much could be your mum.
But thanks, I guess?
GardenDuck88@reddit
I once said to mine "I'm probably around the same age as your mother." He said "Nah, my Mums old."
I didn't dare ask how "old" she was 😆
This_Palpitation6617@reddit
I had a apprentice who I’ve now adopted as such and now I’m his work dad. I do all dad related things and look after him in work before he goes home to his real dad. We get in like a house on fire though he’s a good lad so I don’t mind.
RBII@reddit
If I were you, I'd take this as "You're too cool to be old enough to be my mum", and ask no further questions.
Asking no more questions is critical to this strategy working.
This_Palpitation6617@reddit
I’m with you on that most of mine are older than the people coming to work these days

I agree with your thoughts on the film. It blew my mind as an 11 year old, and it still holds up very well. It's great fun.
I'm 40. A mate in our group who lives some distance from us recently had his 40th birthday. He suggested two options: He would be happy to travel you'd for a night out in our local town, and set over. Or we could meet up for a night out in London like we used to and go somewhere like Camden or Shoreditch, even the west end.
5 years ago I would have jumped at the chance to go to London: a brilliant and expensive night out, but really it's the place to be if you fancy it. We have had so many great nights out some of which are the stuff of legend in our group.
Yet for some reason, my first thought was immediately: Oh buggar that, I can't be arsed, too far (45 minutes trian ride) too expensive, too busy, can't be bothered navigating the transport home when drunk (despite doing this hundreds of times) and the very idea itself just exhausted me.
And that was it. That was the "oh shit, I'm not 23 anymore" moment. But hold on, I was only 23 about three years ago, wasn't I?
No.
We went out to our local town instead. And it was perfect.

Two things: Growing up, 'oldies' music to me was music of the 60s, so, 20ish years before my teen years. Which means for kids of a similar age now, music of the early 2000s would be 'oldies.'
Second thing: Being aware of 'new' things at the time - internet in people's homes, going from word processors at work to actual computer, but now being surpassed by technology to the point where my cell phone is something I only use for texts and calls and my Lidl app, even though I know it does squillions of other things, and that many people basically live all their 'life admin' stuff through theirs.
My dear old godmother once said in frustration, after trying to get through to her bank, "The recording kept asking me to choose from a menu, but I'm calling the bank, not a restaurant!" At the time us youngsters had a good laugh about that but honestly, I'm starting to feel just like that, when faced with how things work today!

When I started watching football all the players were older than me.
Then some of the youth team players got a shot in the first team and we're younger than me, that made me feel grown up.
Then the star players started getting younger than me and it made me feel old.
Then players younger than me started retiring from playing and that made me feel really old.
Then I became older than all the players and I felt ancient.
Now I am older than most of the managers and I am basically a vampire at this point.
