Why are hotels in the UK so expensive?

Posted by Random_Nobody1991@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 283 comments

DaveBeBad@reddit

Are you sure hotels are cheaper abroad? I had to go to Copenhagen for work and paid £150 for a room barely bigger than a double bed and no breakfast. Luckily it was only for one night!

Are there any nice sandy beaches near-ish Gloucestershire?

Posted by titanium_pixel@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 23 comments

DaveBeBad@reddit

Yup the south wales beaches would be good. Porthcawl or Barry might be ok. IIRC there was actually a sandy beach on the banks of the Severn as you drive towards Chepstow from Gloucester - near Wollaston or Lydney.

Did I break pub etiquette here?

Last time I looked, it’s still a pub - although I’ve not been that way in a few years. Was never a good pub though. The highlight of my time there was walking out the back to empty a bin to find 3 women squatting down doing their business…

Did I break pub etiquette here?

When I worked in a pub, I made the mistake of standing on a broken glass. It went straight through my shoe and impaled my foot. Bloody painful. Still finished the shift though…

Famously worked in a Sainsbury’s too. They are people and need to earn a living to pay the bills. Very, very few earn the money they need to retire at 30.

Earplugs and a thick skin - you’ll probably need both! More seriously, try to understand her limitations and work to her. If she needs 10 mins to cool down, take it rather than plough on regardless.

I’ll let you into a secret. Women like sports too. It doesn’t matter if it’s the gym, a running club, climbing or anything else. Join a club and there will be women there. Some of them will be single - or have friends that are. Join a club, get involved and be a nice person and you’re 90% of the way there.

My Dad’s lost his passport in Norway today - is there any way he can come to my graduation in Spain on Friday? Any help is so hugely appreciated.

DaveBeBad@reddit

Strangely, you could get a replacement passport the same day in the early 90s. A friends got lost in the post between the Polish embassy and his house, so he had to go to Liverpool to get one ASAP - he has an interview in the morning and it was printed by Mid-afternoon. (His original passport turned up the day after we left)

I had long hair for 16 years - for being into grunge as a teenager. I lost out on at least one job opportunity because of it - this was for a law firm that couldn’t actually give a valid reason for rejection.

Some are in decline. Some are thriving. Make the town centre an attractive place to go with things to interest different people and they’ll go. Leave it full of empty shops with expensive parking and they won’t.

If you were ever in a band what was it called?

Posted by Normal-Internal164@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 237 comments

DaveBeBad@reddit

I wanted to be in a band. It would have been called “Aardvarks anonymous” working on the principle that you always remember the first and last reviews or gig listings you saw… Fortunately for the world, I have the musical talent of a particularly unmusical yak. (BTW OP, snuff are one of my favourite bands)

Why are public toilet doors always 'pull' to exit?

DaveBeBad@reddit

Because American public toilets have a 2 inch gap on all sides and a low top/high bottom because they all like to watch random strangers shitting…

Is there any reason why UK trains can’t run until at least 1am?

Posted by ss2811@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 309 comments

It depends on where you are. There is a 23:30ish train from Sheffield to Manchester airport arriving at 1:15am. And one at 3:22 arriving at 5:16. So *some* do run overnight.

How do people cope with long commutes into London when living in the North?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 28 comments

DaveBeBad@reddit

If your trains are delayed by 15 minutes, use delay repay to claim a refund straight to your bank - even if your employer pays for the tickets. I got £1000+ in a year or so travelling once a week to Swindon and back.

Which places would you recommended seeing in North Wales?

Posted by smellorapuple@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 49 comments

DaveBeBad@reddit

It’s not mentioned, but Aber Falls is a beautiful hike to two stunning waterfalls. A little steep though. We always liked a trip into Anglesey. Newborough Forest has been mentioned, but Rhosneigr, Treaddur Bay and South Stacks are potentially worthy of a visit. North Angelesey has a couple of little beach towns too. The Llyn peninsula might be worth an explore. Quite remote and off the usual tourist routes.

How many people in the UK actually know medical cannabis is legal?

Posted by Honest-Emu3427@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

DaveBeBad@reddit

Yes it’s legal. That doesn’t mean that you can partake and drive without consequences. Neither does it mean you can partake and operate heavy machinery. You should inform your employer so that they can take appropriate steps to protect you and the company/other employees.

Has anyone left a six figure job and gone minimum wage or part time because they can't hack it?

Posted by allthegear-andnoidea@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 509 comments

I walked out of a six figure job last year (£110k + £20k bonus) to do nothing. Spent six months living off our savings and studying/looking for jobs. Eventually went back to an old employer for £70k. We are comfortable (no mortgage) and slowly building the savings back up. But a lot less stressed and certainly none of the unrealistic expectations and bullying from the last job.

Have any other married UK Redditors in their 40s and 50s never been on a date?

I’m 55. I’ve been married 30 years this year and had one other previous significant relationship (2.5 years). I’ve only ever asked one girl out and she said “no”. I’ve never dated. Both relationships went from friends to relationship almost overnight. It seems that I struggled with dating but I am bloody difficult to get rid of… 😂
