What’s the prettiest route to take when driving from Edinburgh to Hertford?

If it’s a choice between the M6/M1 route or the A1 I definitely think the A1 is prettier (if longer, theoretically)

Out of these, the M40/M6 route is probably the "better looking" route to take. Especially as you get up towards Cumbria.
A1 (between London and Leeds) is largely roundabouts and sex shops.

M6 is definitely the prettiest at the start but also means you have to deal with the bit between Preston and Birmingham past Manchester and Stoke which is up there with one of my least favourite motorway stretches.
If I had unlimited time I'd go M6 to just past Kendal, then hop on the A65 down to Leeds and then go A1 to Hertfordshire. You're right about the sex shops but the roundabouts have gone and being the older road I find the A1 far more interesting than any of the motorways.

Won't be saying that when it gets to Birmingham.

OP asked for Prettiest not the Horniest

I'm asking for the horniest

Train....!
Quicker too...

Go down the M6. You'll hit three-lane motorway long before you would on the A1/M1, and that basically gives you more room to overtake the side-by-side lorries. Far more relaxing.

These are motorway journeys. They won't be pretty. One exception is the M6 through the north lakes, which is always impressive.
The prettiest journey would avoid the motorways completely and would take several days.

The M6 route can be done without tolls but only worth using the non toll route at Birmingham at certain times of the day.

I did a round trip from Salisbury to Edinburgh and back in a day once, I stopped caring about the scenery about 5 hours in so I'd go the quickest if I were you.

It would be much faster and cheaper to fly to Stansted and get on a train to Hertford.

I'd take your west coast route. However, the initial SW leg out of Edinburgh looks like it's the A702 (Biggar) road. For better scenery, go to Penicuik (pronounced penny-cook) then down the A701 to Moffat, and pick up the south-easterly M74 around the U of United Kingdom as shown on that map. It's much more scenic than the A702 and has less traffic.

I mean, that alone will probably take you the entire day with stops included. Take into account some random traffic and that 7 hour drive turns into 9 to 10 hours.

British driving distances are funny. I frequently drive 6hrs each way to my friends in Burgundy from Germany. I don't feel like it takes all day, I stop for around 20 minutes at a service station half way or at a MacDo, but otherwise just power through.
I would never consider that a long or all-day task, it's like a "set out after work, get there before bed" kinda trip.

Depends when you finish work and intend on going to sleep 🤣. Finish work at 6pm and arrive at midnight is a long evening.
thebrainitaches@reddit
I finish around 5:30 and yeah then drive and get there around midnight. Usually because my friends family are chill they're still up and wait for me to eat dinner too 😊

Good to know it’ll be longe than google’s estimate. Luckily I grew up in canada so my tolerance is pretty high. I think it’d be fine with up to 12ish hours in a day.
Sam__@reddit
Agreed. This is easily a 9-10 hour journey.

I’d go up via Newcastle and come home via Lake District. That’s what I do, best of both worlds then as Lake District and drive with sea views are both equally decent

Especially if they take the coastal route through Northumberland. Plenty of nice beaches and castles.
