2027 Toyota GR86 Is Spruced Up with New Colors, Mechanical Tweaks

Very fair. I like how brz sound with exhaust work but I hate how loud they are and how oboxinous their drivers are. Though I'm a weirdo, I hate hearing other people's motors in traffic during a weekday, but absolutely love hearing them otherwise haha. I really like cars that are quite at low rpm and sound awesome at high rpm, like a miata haha.

Not "toxic", but what vehicles have fan bases that take them WAY too seriously?

I've become a big toyota fan in the last few years despite never really caring about them as a kid. Just everything they are doing makes me respect and appreciate them. I'm more excited for what toyota is going to build over porsche and mazda now, 12 year old me would aghast at that haha.

True, I think toyota should invest in a transaxle dct. Would also let them use it for a new gr86 if they wanted. Though of the GR86 was re-engineered to have a transaxle that may cause issues for the manaul trans and the chassis is already 50/50. But I think think a dct gr86 would be neat.

Ya but that's a good automatic, which is faster than the manual. My point is the corolla automatic is a bad automatic and objectively the worst transmission option for the car. To be fair too, BMW only does that because their manual can't take more torque and they don't want to spend any money developing it to handle the extra torque required. Even if they did though the auto would still be faster, torque converter auaomtics are far enough along now that a good one beats a manual in all metrics outside maybe parasetic loss.

Wait why build an insane track focussed carbon fibre car, and then saddle it with the worse transmission. This isn't even an auto vs manual comment, it's specifically the GR corolla auto vs the manual. The gr corolla auto has worse parasitic losses, accelerates significantly slower, and is slower around a track. What the hell is going on what oems. They gave it carbon fibre front fenders with air pressure vents and they have it that godawdul auto???

Then I caught myself and imeaditely started looking at shitbox s chassis cars to cleanse my palette. I'm really worried that means I'm getting old now haha.

When they work they are so nice though. Lovely to drive, surprisingly good EPS, really nice power trains, amazing nvh. Idk they just feel so good. My family has a few modern rovers and touch wood they have all been reliable so far. Honestly I think a lot of the issues are over blown, if you take care of them they will work well. Though what do I know, I drive an FD, my barometer for reliable is if my car doesn't embarrass me in public when I try to start it 🤣.

Absolutely true, and I love that they did that. I know a lot of people who started out in cars by getting v6 challengers before moving onto other stuff. I do wish they did something more special, like a v6 performance package. Idk maybe there wasn't more to be done. Though you could get AWD with the V6 only which was cool, even if it was short lived.

I just fundementally can't care about this car. It's an appliance suv for multi millionaires to take there cars to soccer practice. Ya it's ugly and bland I guess, but I just can't care. Everyone is outraged about something that doesn't matter idk. If they had cancelled an ice car, like the roma and replaced it with the ev I'd get it. But this is litterally just an appliance suv, no different than any other ev appliance suv, just at a different price bracket. I may as will read toaster reviews and get outraged over that haha.

Has there been news about this that I missed? My understanding is that its still up in the air if it'll be hybrid or not, or just have mutlitple engine options. And it seems there is some rumors pointing towards toyota developing a hybrid manual. We know the upcoming Miata NE will be some form of hybrid, even if it's just a MHEV. But that still means mazda is going to have to develope the manual transmission for it. Toyota and Mazda share technology to an extent. So a hybrid celica isn't out of the question. I know the market case for developing a new manual transmission is really difficult, just look at BMW and porsche. But it's not impossible to justify the business case if mazda and toyota share resources and are putting in cars which the sales data shows have 65% plus manual take rate. Obviously a lot of wishful thinking on my part, but I still don't think it's impossible.

I think if we got the giulia qf manual in north America it would have a lot more credit with enthusiasts. From what I understand you get a more connected, fun, and raw driving experience than you would in an M3. And its substantially lighter. But than the M3 comes with a manual, which leaves it in kind of this weird area in the north American market. Like who is this far now? It's for the person who wants a slower, more fun, more hardcore m3, but with an automatic? Just didn't make sense to me. And I imagine sales reflected that. All the weirder because they made a manual giulia for Europe and had all the sales data showing that these types of manual luxury sedans / coupes sell dispraportionetely well in North America.

Would be cool to see this with different engine options at different price points honestly. A cheaper I6 version would be awesome alongside a more expensive hemi srt. Depending on the platform/weight may also have the option of an even lower trim I4, which could be absolutely awesome. Imagine if the platform is 3500 pounds with options for a hurricane I4 uptuned to 350hp, I6 at 550hp, and hellcat v8 at 777. That would be a really cool and accessible enthusiast car. IMO, the correct lesson to learn from the 911 is that if you build a really good platform as a foundation you can then segment it across a huge price range and aim it at many different types of target markets. This is basically what ford learned with the mustang. Multiple different motor options and price options, but actual care put into it so they all feel cool or special, rather than just decontented. IE stuff like the highoutput 2.3 with performance package and the new RTR ecoboost. Yes it's the base motor but it's still a very cool and compelling package for enthusiasts at a relatively lower price point, similar to the 911T. I'm a big fan of cool looking cars and fun cars not being gate kept behind cost or a big motor. Everyone should have the option to buy a cool fun car at different prices. That's how new enthusiasts are made.

Some of the rumored toyota stuff is super cool. New celica and/or MR2. The GR GT is insanely cool but probably will be priced at like 200k. Also the S-FR may still exist and come out maybe? The new inline 4 they showed off is super cool too. But I think outside of that I'm with you, if this like a Nissan Z, mk5 supra price than its super cool. I imagine it'll be closer to like 100-150k in reality though honestly. If it's truly in a bespoke platform, that ain't cheap.

Honestly ya, I think everyone is nostalgiac for their own past, but the 2000s are the pinnacle for analog performance cars. If you like manual transmissions and hydraulic steering that is the peak. Like the f360 and f430 are such cool cars and ferrari will never even bother to make something like them again. They are so pure and simple in a way that a 296 could never be. Same with the e46, old amg vs new hybrid amg.

A lot of 2000-2010 sports car have already fully bottomed out on depreciation and are staring to appreciate again. 996 and 997, even 986s are either holding value or mildly appreciating. I think f360s have totally bottomed out on depreciation and are going back up in price? Pretty sure f430s, vantaged, and early r8s too. I think db9s are still continuing to depreciate, though I think it's because early years have known issues.

Does buying an 86 even make sense?

BWFTW@reddit

Could you just import it yourself? The cost of shipping should be like 5 grand Max. Is there just a bunch of import taxes or are the import companies adding on a giant charge for their services? Otherwise look at getting a BMW like others suggested. Lots of other cool stuff at 35 years old you can import too, fc rx-7, porsche 944. Hell an air cooled 911 would be cheaper than 100k for a gr86 haha. You could even get an og ae86. The first years of rx-7 fds are 34 right now (1992) so that is also an option in a year or 2. I'm sorry the import laws for your country are ass but seriously do more research into other platforms, I bet you'll be able to find something you love. Imo I'm on team e30 / e36 / e46. Hang around this subreddit a little bit there is tonnes of awesome builds. One was even updated a few days ago I'll link it.

Ya it got really obvious how outdated their autos are with the GRC and GRY autos imo. They spent so long talking about all the changes and development they put into it. Only to make the slow shifting and power sucking vamperic auto in any performance car. Seeing a GRC auto get dog walked by the lower horsepower gti was really funny but also just showed how inadequate their autos are for performance work. Pretty sure the GRC auto is a full second or more slower to 60 than the manual, in 2026 haha.

It felt so weird and jarring to me. Steering felt good most of the time, but I think I'm so used to hydraulic steering that even small things just throw me off. It wasn't bad or uncomunicative, just felt odd to me. Weirdly I find land rover eps to be really good but maybe that's because when I driving an suv I'm not really paying attention to steering feel.
