Why even bother mentioning EV rpm. A regular model 3 goes to 15k rpm.
tablepennywad@reddit
Wow, why so fugly!
beefhammer_@reddit
I genuinely feel sad at the state of cars/motoring, I grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s with some of the best the motoring world had to offer and as ive got older and into driving age the state of cars, car culture, the visceral feeling of older cars, the analogue driving experience, the sounds, the smells have almost all gone and replaced by sterile microwaves with the personality of piers morgan
Yes they're fast but genuinely who even cares anymore? Everything is digital, cold, fake, sterile and made by bean counters with no passion of flair or style in this case because good lord its ugly
Companies should be ashamed releasing shite like this, I used to love Mercedes
strongmanass@reddit
If you wanted all the performance without the sound and the smells and the need to ramp up before you got full power then you've never been able to fully enjoy cars until now.
I do. My problem with cars since I was old enough to think about it basically boils down to the combustion powerplant. No knock on people who like it, but for as long as I can remember I've wanted smooth, quiet, immediate power without the heat or smell. Performance EVs are finally starting to come into their own and I'm looking forward to it.

That's up to you if you feel that way, I'm not trying to convince you otherwise.

Mercedes is committed to this three-pointed star pattern over everything which makes every car they add it to look like a tacky 2006 handbag
gimpwiz@reddit
Fucking three point headlights. Looks like people who flaunt the (possibly knockoff) LV bag they can barely afford with LVLVLVLV labeling all over it. Embarrassing stuff.
HeyyyyListennnnnn@reddit
I don't mind that aspect, it could have been a fun design theme. The execution is the problem. The new Mercedes-Benz family face is bad enough, but the great big void at the back is just awful. Add in the generic, aeroblob side profile, Minority Report on a budget interior and it's tragic all over.
LA-ncevance@reddit
Except for the wheels! Tri spokes would be pretty cool on a big body benz like the new S class
Kagenlim@reddit
That's not the main issue I feel. The front facia is legitimately unbalanced
Big mercedes grilles have been done in the past especially for their race cars but this just looks wrong
Mountain-Union2347@reddit
They insist on the tri star spangled blob for every model. They had a perfect blend of sharp and curvy a few years ago and then gave it up for… this.
Relative-Pirate6090@reddit
I hope it's fast af, because that rear needs to get the hell away from me. GTA or Burnout vibes. Not in the good way, unfortunately.
The front reminds me of a cartoon version of the AMG GT.
A-VR-Enthusiast@reddit
The rear is bad, but the overall shape and even the front is better than most other mercedes, still doesn't really scream mercedes to me despite it trying to with all the little mercedes stars everywhere. But still, wtf were they thinking with that rear, the concept was fine, but then they change the shape completely and leave those 3 lights basically unchanged, it looks like they just ran out of time in blender making it and couldn't move them in time.
Swimming-School-7960@reddit
lets agree to disagree
Avedas@reddit
Nah, that light line across ain't it. Looks like a Nissan or something lmao
claymore5o6@reddit
Front end is a Chinese knock-off BRZ and the rear end gives me Dodge Intrepid vibes. Just bad.
Nicktyelor@reddit
Yeah, I even generally like most of Merc's other current designs (mixed bag of tolerable to generically handsome blobs).
But this takes the cake. Truly one of the worst rear end designs on any car they've designed. It's like they couldn't stop adding shit to it and globbed on more unnecessary lighting/trim. Whhhhhy is there so much needles black trim and faux slat around the already bloated lights? Why does it dip down at the outside corners? Why do we need a light bar and a set of tacky star lights and a separate lower strip for reflectors/reverse lights? Could they really not consolidate?
Such a wild departure from the concept too, which had an arguably gorgeous rear.
HamlnHand@reddit
When I was younger and wanted to be a car designer I'd sketch a car concept like I'd see in magazines or online. I'd be like yeah this is fucking hard these all turned out super badly, maybe I'm not meant to do this when I grow up.
Well turns out all those kids who also sketched ugly blobs are making money doing it now.

But there is always the bmw XM wich is just on another level of ugly
A-VR-Enthusiast@reddit
Nah, this has some merit to it, like it by no means is a good mercedes, but if it were an audi or vw, sure, I'd like it. But that rear end, holy fuck is it bad, like I rather have nothing in that big black panel than whatever they were trying to do with those 3 circles, which is funny, because imo it looked great on the concept. It truly is a mystery how making an attractive ev is just apparently nearly impossible to these modern luxury car designers, though at least bmw is trying to do something good with the neue klasse design language, like the i3 looks genuinely great.
John_Sux@reddit
The back end reminds of the way some people have their eyes and nose removed due to cancer etc.
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
I have a problem with proportions on the neu klasse I3 and the rear end looks really cheap and ugly. But the internal combustion 3 series neu klasse looks pretty decent.
Kagenlim@reddit
I just wish the headlights were more circular ro complete the E30 look lol
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit

I really don't understand the decision to remove the angel eyes from their cars. They look great but decided they wanted two straight lines instead...
Kagenlim@reddit
The fact that they even have the old kidney design and yet didnt go all the way retro is the biggest missed opportunity ever
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
Yea, they really should have gone back to basics and made a car that is beautiful in its simplicity.
Volvo pulled it off on their V/S60 and V/S90. Not retro but simple and stylish.

Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
It looks better then the lower trim tbh. Thet went Tesla asf for the 53 and gave it a fugly looking short light bar.
Kongary@reddit
I actually like the side profile and even the audacity of the very distinctive tail. What gets me is the front that looks like it was inspired by something that is still in the middle of the evolutionary tree between air and water breather.
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
I feel like it’s the grill length that makes it look a bit fugly in the front but besides that I’d say it has an “ev” face of the GT
Kongary@reddit
It may also be the overall combo with the trilineal treatment in the headlights that evokes marine life somehow. I would note that I'm not actually crazy about that tail design, the black area is too expansive and never mind the tail lights. But it is certainly trying something different...

Okay a slightly more substantial criticism than the awful looks: why does this car weigh 5,400lbs? Yes it's an EV but half the article is about how lightweight and well engineered it is and then they drop "btw it weighs 500lbs more than a Taycan" at the end despite it being half a decade newer.
strongmanass@reddit
Add an extra motor, bigger battery/longer range, and more length for better rear passenger room and I can see 500 pounds extra.

Why is the continuous output so low? Even with these axial flux electric motors, it still weighs 2,460 kg (5,423 lbs). I guess the weight savings are offset by the extra speakers for the simulated V8 sounds.

literally nobody cares about the RPM of an electric motor in an EV, it mattered in ice cars because well. it made a cool sound the higher up it went (usually). if anything a high rpm electric motor makes an annoying whine.

Those are radial flux motors though, not axial flux like the AMG. Axial flux motors typically have lower RPM ratings than equivalent radial flux motors.
captainthanatos@reddit
Those certainly are words…
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
Axial flux runs parallel to the axis, radial flux runs perpendicular. So imagine the magnets on a radial flux are laying down along the axle and the axial flux magnets are perpendicular to the axle similar to a clutch disc. They both go along the outside of the axle but the radial flux motors are more compact as a result.
https://www.stanfordmagnets.com/radial-vs-axial-flux-motor-which-is-suitable-for-the-future-of-electric-machines.html

Even 22,000 rpm isn't much to brag about. the BYD Atto3 Evo running on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo spins to 30,511 RPM and and has a power density of 16.4 kw/kg.
kimi_rules@reddit
True, the SU7 Ultra V8 motor can do 27k. It all comes down to how it puts the power down, the SU7 Ultra does well after 150kmh since it's a track focused car, but not the fastest in drag races at a standstill.
a1usiv@reddit
Or they could just add gears to it. They're literally using a single speed. A 4-speed 7k rpm motor could probably do more than a 1-speed 15k motor, although that adds its own drawbacks.
kimi_rules@reddit
It's not suitable to put a gearbox in EVs due to power loss and over-torque that could grenade the gearbox itself. Though people are ZF probably have a design or two, it would probably rated to handle a certain torque limit, not 1000-1500nm modern performance EVs are pushing these days.
A different idea is to put multiple motors in a car, a small one for low rpm city driving and a bigger one in the rear for higher power and speeds, the smaller one would disengage after a certain speed to prevent over revving.
a1usiv@reddit
Appreciate the response. As a layman, I have trouble understanding why it's difficult, though. Couldn't the motor for example just be set to run at a lower torque in higher gears then?
mattSER@reddit
Definitely, but on a side note, as an EV enthusiast, I despise the idea of a multi-speed gearbox in my car.
It goes against the entire core idea of simplicity that I love most about EVs and completely ruins the Taycan as my theoretical dream car.
If I wanted gears, I'd just buy a manual V8 Mustang.
Porencephaly@reddit
Doesn’t the Taycan specifically have two gears though?
a1usiv@reddit
I get you about the simplicity, that's definitely one of the major selling points of an EV powertrain at the moment.
kimi_rules@reddit
It could, but that would defeat the purpose in the name of speed. Might end up being slower than without a gearbox itself.
Tesla tried this in the early days too, they conclude it just wasn't worth it.
by_a_pyre_light@reddit
That's essentially what Honda is doing with the S+ mode in the Prelude. You sacrifice performance for the simulation of switching gears to increase the driving engagement.
A similar argument could be made about manual transmissions vs modern single and dual-clutch transmissions or even a typical ZF transmission: those are all faster to switch and allow more gears with higher performance and efficiency, but you're trading "down" for fun in the driving experience.
TrptJim@reddit
With EVs already simulating gearboxes in software for paddle shifting, and doing a very good job of it, I would love to see a solution go further and include a fake but accurate clutch pedal and shifter. It would be very impractical but fun.
elocsitruc@reddit
There's a pretty cool ev ae86 Toyota made that's a stick shift made with a frs Trans and a tundra hybrid system. Some cool videos of it on YouTube. It's not unheard of
sqparadox@reddit
Unless it's direct drive, they already have a gearbox, it's just a 1-speed.
The Taycan uses direct drive for the front and a 2-speed gearbox for the rear.
kimi_rules@reddit
The technology in the Taycan is limited, it tried to solve a problem with performance EVs.
The small and big motor setup most EV makers are doing nowadays remove the needs for a 1 motor + gearbox setup. Or even a single rear motor with good low-rpm efficiency but could also rev to 20k rpm is good enough.
Electric motor performance aren't discussed enough online, mostly because we're still limited by the weight of the batteries. But it's good the industry is trying to improve the technology.

kimi_rules@reddit
Leave it to the Germans to overcomplicate something.

MangoAtrocity@reddit
Porsche figured this out with Taycan
hydrochloriic@reddit
It kinda is for electric cars. It’s almost always less efficient to have switchable gears, not to mention their failure rate with EVs, so the higher the RPM a motor produces usable torque, the more aggressive the reduction ratio. That means better efficiency and higher top speed (or more torque and lower top speeds).
a1usiv@reddit
I don't really know a thing about EVs or even electricity honestly, but intuitively, it seems like an electric motor running at max rpm would be less efficient vs running at a lower rpm?
hydrochloriic@reddit
Max rpm, yes. Below that, it varies by motor. At very very low RPM it’s wildly INefficient (but I mean like just starting moving type low speeds). Basically, at really low RPM you’re powering power in to get as much magnetic force on a barely-moving rotor. At high rpm you don’t have time to control the magnetic field to get peak torque anymore (the rotor is just going too fast).
The tradeoff for a high speed EV (AMG) is that the efficiency loss and reliability of a multi-speed gear system is worse than the smaller loss of running the motor a little faster than its peak efficiency. One big advantage is at normal street speeds the motor is indeed running slower and should theoretically be more efficient [than a 2-speed in a shorter ratio].
a1usiv@reddit
Makes perfect sense, thanks!
CuriousTravlr@reddit
It matters to the engineers, it's only being used in this case as a marketing point.
This car looks like shit and it deserves to sit on the lot being unsold. No one wants an electric AMG.
n05h@reddit
Well then it makes even less sense to brag about because this seems quite low.
StrikeouTX@reddit
Agreed
Dragonasaur@reddit
Matters only to the same people who also only care about 0 - 60
Only matters to the rest if the 2s 0-60 was in an NA engine
Tw0Rails@reddit
Its literally not. Max torque is achieved instantly once a field is applied. Torque and power may be maintained or extended switching on and off passive devices.
Eventually it drops off and the motor field slips.
I don't know how you wrote something so confident as if ICE and electric motors iperate the same. Electric motors are well studied and have existed as long as ICE motors.
Porencephaly@reddit
It matters to the engineers who built it, but not to the buyers. I also don’t care about the blade geometry of my radiator fan or how many air vanes are in the engine air box. All of those are indeed important but none of them make the car more or less appealing to purchase.

gimpwiz@reddit
Absolutely. I reject all electric motor RPM marketing and so should you.
spongebob_meth@reddit
And that rpm isn't even impressive for an electric motor. Pretty sure Tesla motors spin way faster than that.
Moistinterviewer@reddit
I think an electric motor whine sounds similar to a turbine on my car at least and sounds way better than most engines, also most people that say shit like this drive a 1.8 diesel….tell me you drive a V8 so I can put you in the category of “first person to mention engine sound that doesn’t drive a diesel”
mantenner@reddit
I drive an inline 6 with ITBs that revs to 7800rpm, I think electric motors sound like crap.

Moistinterviewer@reddit
Yea but diesels sound like crap yet you wouldn’t mention this on a thread about a new diesel car, you just wouldn’t go into that thread.
Is it because all of these electric cars are faster, smoother, cheaper to run and more reliable than your car that you are triggered and need to leave a negative comment?
mantenner@reddit
There aren't any diesel performance cars.
The reason noise is brought up in this context is because the C63, and generally most performance cars are appreciate for their noise.
the_lamou@reddit
I don't know about you, but I appreciate performance cars for their performance. Noise is just energy not being covered to motion.
mantenner@reddit
That is certainly an opinion.
Each to their own, but that's just not true at all. It's a byproduct that's unavoidable in the case of ICE. Suppressed noise is wasted performance.
the_lamou@reddit

I really don't understand what your whole charade with this is, or what point you're trying to make?
You're honestly arguing semantics and clutching at straws here, if you knew anything about physics you'd know sound is such a minor form of energy that's wasted. It makes virtually no impact on efficiency.

It matters for the type of electric motor they use, but it's kinda more of a nerdy thing than a good bragging metric in a vacuum.
Mercedes is using axial flux motors, which are more efficient than the mostly ubiquitous radial motors but typically have the downside of harder to raise rpm (and thus lower top speed) since the rotor is a wide and flat disc instead of a thick rod. 15k rpm means that their axial motors have rpm and top speed parity with normal performance radial motors.
TheDuhhh@reddit
Interesting!
kimi_rules@reddit
It's just you who don't care, or rather very ignorant on how vehicle mechanics works.
It's important for top speeds so it doesn't rely on a gearbox. Previous decade performance EVs acceleration slowed down beyond 8k rpm, but with 15k redline it can consistently put down power for longer. For your simple head, faster 0-400kmh.
strongmanass@reddit
I know the importance and I don't care. The details are for the engineers to work out. It shouldn't affect my usage of the car.
kimi_rules@reddit
Doesn't hurt to learn something new. Understand the engineering decisions they make when designing a car rather than complaining about it.
Thee_Sinner@reddit

The Model S P100D of 2016 can do an estimated 18,000 RPM. The 15,000 RPM in the Merc is nothing new. Its an electric motor, we all already know they spin fast.
ggtsu_00@reddit

gor134@reddit
I swear weekly car reveals weren't this ugly 10 years ago...
SirAlexx11@reddit
Actually people always hated new designs. Take a look at BMW and remember how people reacted to the g80, or even before that when the new e60 came out. People always hate new designs but it gets more accepted in time. Not talking about this GT model specifically, but in general
gor134@reddit
The G80 is still ugly. It just happens to be an extremely compelling package that many people are willing to overlook the nose for.
Swimming-School-7960@reddit
you actually picked out the two ugliest 5 series gens. and the pig snout will never look good
DaTrueSomething@reddit
E60 hate is so forced I swear 😭
Minute-Comparison892@reddit
the g80 is still ugly imo, i actually like this new amg gt design wise
strongmanass@reddit
And that's why it's important to have variety in design even if it's polarizing. Most of the comments are about how ugly the car is, but you like it. It's the same for the G80 M3 or any other design you find ugly; someone will like it.
J1mj0hns0n@reddit
God that's so fucking ugly, why would anyone pay for that. That fiat people carrier with the weird bulge below the window looks better then that.
I've seen "cars" crafted by one man out of cardboard that looks better then that
zeekayz@reddit

zeekayz@reddit
Front end is a super model compared to what's in the back
Cranjesmcbasketball1@reddit
This thing looks weird as fuck and I love it. Finally something out of the norm.
beefhammer_@reddit
It looks like every terrible modern trend mashed into one car tf you mean?
Cranjesmcbasketball1@reddit
How does the back end look like a modern trend? Modern trends to me are super thin LED's, split headlights, HUGE high grills (i know this has a big grill but its lower), etc.
Gullible_Goose@reddit
I’m usually a defender of weird ass looking cars but this one misses the mark so badly. That rear end is another level of bad
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
Defintely àn acquired taste, I don’t genereally speaking dislike it although I do dislike it to a notable degree design wise. Wish it looked more similar to the concept because I like the concept’s design à lot but this is nice in comparison.
PanadaTM@reddit
This might genuinely be the ugliest "performance car" to ever make production. From every angle it's awful and I'm usually the person defending new designs on reddit
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
The front looks like a robot from Futurama (but I can't remember which one), but I genuinely like those rear lights. It's unique at a time when everyone seems to be copying everyone else
PanadaTM@reddit
I'm the opposite, looking at it again. I think the photo angles they used for the front are really unflattering and it might look decent irl. But the piano black rear end with 6 biohazard tail lights will never grow on me. Especially compared to the beautiful last gen Mercedes rear end
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
6 biohazard tail lights are rad to me in a world where everything is just a light bar with a sharp angle for the tail light and indicator
yardshark09@reddit
Same, I’m usually the optimistic one but I’m struggling here. I can actually accept the rear, but Mercedes really took a Taycan and designed this as its competitor? With that face?
Aero06@reddit
The body itself is fine but the front and rear ends are so bad that it beggars belief. A custom set of bumpers could probably salvage this car, but you have to wonder what they were smoking to have greenlit this thing.
Intel_Oil@reddit
The body really isnt fine. Its way too high. The roof is almost as high as an old VW Touran!
truthdoctor@reddit
I don't know what they're thinking with that front fish mouth and rear fascia. It just looks off. Such a disappointment given the overall shape of the vehicle is quite sleek.
lurpeli@reddit
It's so odd cause the first GT looked pretty good. Granted they basically just copied Porsche but still
strongmanass@reddit
The first GT was based on the CLS, it had nothing to do with Porsche.
ugfish@reddit
This class of vehicle does such low volume anyways it’s a moot point. The sugar babies of LA will be happy to whip this down the blvd regardless of looks.
PanadaTM@reddit
Sure but it didn't have to look this bad. The orange concept car they had wasn't pretty but this is somehow 100x worse
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit

aquariuminspace@reddit

Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
The C111-II is the best looking Mercedes of all time IMO and I have no idea how they butchered it into this
carguymt@reddit
It might be a moot point for sales. But cars like this are important to build brand perception and make people aspire to owning an AMG. This is doing nothing to salvage the reputation AMG currently has.
BWFTW@reddit
I usually don't care when these types of cars are ugly, since I'm not buying one nor or they meant for me. But this one pisses me off just because of how beautiful the eqxx concept was. They took that concept, made it fat and gave it a unibrow. Just gross. The unibrow design language is genuinely insane from MB.
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
Well, there is one good angle, look at the car and then turn 180°. That's the good angle!
Murram9@reddit
Wow this is impressive. What an astonishing car. The designers should give themselves a raise because making a car look this bad is a feat. This is gonna make the values of pt cruisers skyrocket because people finally realize how good it looks compared to this.
MotoMD@reddit
I don’t get it, an EV platform is a skateboard so you can design whatever shape you want around it. Porsche showed this to us with the taycan. You can’t even blame the Chinese market anymore since their EVs look good. So that makes me wonder who wants this ugly pile of shit with logos everywhere? I’m a huge Mercedes fan and don’t want anything they are currently selling outside of the G wagon and maybe the AMG GT (except a 911 is better).
Typical_headzille@reddit
My mom is one of these people who likes these tacky big screen vehicles like these.
MotoMD@reddit

Typical_headzille@reddit
Somewhat. They all have teslas, GLEs, or an X5.
MotoMD@reddit
Yea same for my wife and all her friends, but they don’t like logos maybe it’s a generational thing
threeinacorner@reddit
Honestly, Americans.
I'm talking about Mercedes' design language in general, with the focus on iconography.
Here in Aus, the cars most focused on iconography are Cadillacs (aside from the Germans, of course), with the illuminated grille and badges on the IQ cars.
You can even see this appreciation of iconography and branding with that recent F1 edition Blackwing. They put bog standard F1 and FIA logos all over the interior and exterior because to a lot of Americans, those logos add value.
Alternatively, the Germans might have focused hard on iconography and branding because it's the one thing Chinese carmakers don't have. They don't have the prestige and heritage these big 3 Germans do. So they lean hard into it.
Dr__Nick@reddit
I think they're trying to attract Chinese buyers by putting the branding all over it the same way Louis Vuitton did putting the LV all over their bags back when that was popular in China.
strongmanass@reddit
Logomania in fashion started waaay before the Chinese economic boom made them a serious luxury market.
Sharp_Project_2585@reddit
Difference the cadillacs look nice. Merc has been selling the bag
threeinacorner@reddit
Hey I didn't say the Merc designers were good lmao, just that they were going for the same thing as Cadillac.
And I don't even know if I can say the Cadillacs look nice tbh. I mean, definitely not the Celestiq.
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit (OP)
Different strokes for different folks tbh. The design language of the EV gt comparatively to the design of the taycan arent that different to the cars their predominately based upon.
As for the final part of what you said, the 911 ànd GT although they’re good alternatives to each other hage different general purposes genereally speaking. The GT is closer to the GT then the first gen one is because mercedes loyalists ànd consumers they spoke to durinf the creation of the second gen GT said the first one wasn’t practical enough ànd was too harsh. As for the 911 it’s a sports car with supercar performace that’s marketed as a GT to increase sales.

by_a_pyre_light@reddit
I feel like the Lucid Air is the definition of "inoffensive". It's a sleek, generic blob sedan design with the slightly-pinched corners in the front from Tesla and every generic Chinese EV that launched in the past decade. Nothing exciting, nothing fun, just a functional blob.

I just don't understand these interiors. Simply slapping giant screens on a flat surface on the dash makes it so the screens have absolutely massive cheap glossy black plastic bezels. These literally look like android tablets from 2010 just glued onto the dashboard or something. I will never think that level of screens is necessary, but if it is there's got to be a more elegant way to do it for these incredibly expensive luxury cars.
desf15@reddit
Yeah. I don't have problem with screens by themselves, most customers want it, and I learned to live with it. But it look extremely cheap when you enter 150k usd car and notice these tablets with bezels that looks like something you would find in supermarket discount bin 10 years ago.
I get that car screen has different toughness requirements than my ipad, but for fucks sake, if Apple can do it in a tablet that costs few hundred dollars then surely car manufacturers can do something better than this for 150k usd. Especially since we're not talking about some plastic near your ankles, we're talking about main focal point of the interior.
Intel_Oil@reddit
People gobble this up and the times i've heard, especially by youngsters, that my Cars interiors are boring because no big Screen is astonishing.

So this is a full replacement for the gas GT 4D and not an addition to the AMG sub-brand? Curious choice because there's a market for premium EVs globally but I expect GT 4D sales in markets like the Middle East and North America to crater if it's EV-only.
I wonder if they'll rush out a new GT 4D gas sedan based on the current E-class. Could even revive and reposition the CLS as the "Mercedes-AMG CLS" or something with 6-8-cylinder engine options.
Firm_Affect6184@reddit
At the worst cars the front is excusable. It looks okay in darker colors but the back lights is dogshit. It's not even poor design, it's inexcusably a design mess up. I'm probably really dumb, but isn't high rpm only impressive if you have pistons making crankshafts spin? Like it's really hard and rare to make pistons go down and back up again really fast?
How is that impressive if you have coiled wires around a shaft spinning in place? There's like only one moving part there, so that system is much more simple and easy to manage.
Somebody help me out please.
TheCreepeerster@reddit
This car uses axial flux motors, which typically have lower max RPMs and higher torque than equivalent radial flux (conventional) motors. They're more complicated to design and build, but they can directly drive the wheels without gear reduction.
These motors usually top up between 5k and 8k RPMs. To get 15k RPM out of an axial flux, equivalent to the speed of a conventional motor, is a serious advancement.

LordofSpheres@reddit
Interesting to see axial flux motors make it into a production vehicle. Curious how the packaging will work out. While the large motor rotors are acceptable in a low-slung, aerodynamic vehicle which can sacrifice practicality, I'm not sure how well they'd work in a separate sort of vehicle (i.e. an SUV) where ground clearance or suspension articulation is more of a priority. Whatever the case, good that somebody is going to get direct production experience with them in automobiles.
desf15@reddit
Axial flux motors were available in production vehicles already. Eg. SF90, Revuleto and Temerario.
Not sure if there were any pure EVs with them though, as above models are obviously hybrids.

Theyve spent billions on this probably lol. Can’t just cancel it something you paid billions for because not every consumer likes the look of ir.

No need to confuse my reaction with naivete. The engineering behind the platform is no doubt impressive, but by God did they not market test this with able-visioned people first? Even vision-impaired folks would find this ugly.

It’s defintely not a design that’s easily digestible but I think based on what color someone gets that it can look better. Also they probably only have such high expectations for its sales. The G580 shortly after it’s release was already selling in very low numbers ànd Mercedes’s CEO when asked about its sales, commuincated it wasn’t selling horribly and that based on their expectations it was doing pretty good.

I will hope for the best as a fan of Mercedes, but Jesus I'm hoping they're already working on a refresh. In profile it looks Taycanish, but the details are so confused.

Graphichally this might be ugliest car in the world

The rear end is an abomination. This has to be the worst MB design so far
ImKindaHungry2@reddit
Front: it’s not the best.
Back: Oh SpongeBob, why?

Makes the concept look gorgeous. I usually wouldnt jump in to bitch about a design, but this one I genuinely don't understand.

I don’t know how manufacturers don’t know that they’re not required to make their EV variants hideous.

God damn that’s ugly
