Jason Cammisa had a great line in his review of the 2023 Morizo edition, "I'd like for you to name another 4 door car that only has 2 seats. This is a model of practicality! It's also proof that Toyota's lost its goddamn mind and you and I benefit from that insanity!"
Currently under development is the GR Corolla MORIZO RR, an ultimate 5-seater model of the GR Corolla equipped with the GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission
So there won't be a 5-seater, manual version of this?
Wait why build an insane track focussed carbon fibre car, and then saddle it with the worse transmission. This isn't even an auto vs manual comment, it's specifically the GR corolla auto vs the manual. The gr corolla auto has worse parasitic losses, accelerates significantly slower, and is slower around a track. What the hell is going on what oems. They gave it carbon fibre front fenders with air pressure vents and they have it that godawdul auto???
lol doesnt make any fucking sense. This thing looks beautiful, and i wish we had gotten the GR Yaris in the states... but im gonna be a hard pass on this limited edition corolla. Ive been wanting this or a focus rs. ugh
The GRMN Corolla has the 6 speed manual transmission and rear seat delete. The Morizo RR edition gets the same exterior modifications, but comes with the 8 speed DAT transmission and keeps the rear seats intact.
Given it’s still under development, it seems likely they aren’t going to just slap the same auto from the GR in there, without at minimum heavy modifications.
True, I think toyota should invest in a transaxle dct. Would also let them use it for a new gr86 if they wanted. Though of the GR86 was re-engineered to have a transaxle that may cause issues for the manaul trans and the chassis is already 50/50. But I think think a dct gr86 would be neat.
Ya but that's a good automatic, which is faster than the manual. My point is the corolla automatic is a bad automatic and objectively the worst transmission option for the car.
To be fair too, BMW only does that because their manual can't take more torque and they don't want to spend any money developing it to handle the extra torque required. Even if they did though the auto would still be faster, torque converter auaomtics are far enough along now that a good one beats a manual in all metrics outside maybe parasetic loss.
Also, BMW’s rationale for not putting manuals in their high performance cars is basically the same reason every other manufacturer does the same. Most manuals nowadays (apart from those developed by companies like Tremec) are iterations of older transmissions that have a lower power ceiling. Since take rates on manuals are low there’s little interest in pouring more money into a new transmission that may only make its way into a few thousand cars at most
The transmission in the Mk8 GTI was more or less identical to the one in the Mk5 IIRC
Big question mark on the Morizo RR transmission choice - if that greyish color is exclusive to it, and not the GRMN, they had a manual car in that color at the dealer event where it was leaked back in winter. Toyota also left the door open by saying "still in development", so who knows. If it is the DAT only, that'd be a very weird move.
Also, with the stupid seat restriction - looks like the US car gets the Toyota Boshoku seats that were in the Morizo, so an upgrade over the normal GRC seats, but not near as nice as the Japan and Australia GRMN.
Someone buying this car will probably get the bucket seats one way or another. I know I would.
True, same as the handful of Nismo GT-R owners I know of that imported the incredible Nismo carbon Recaros for those cars. Some people with deep pockets will get them.
Carbon fiber fenders and rear wing? Oh this is gonna be big money. Love that it exists for a fortunate few, but too hard edged for me so I'll just admire it via reviews.
I'm getting a new vehicle this month and it's a Corolla hatch. I would have loved to have considered the GR, but it's like double the price of the highest trim of the regular Corolla.
For the record, in Canada a manual GR Corolla is $60k. This thing will probably be $90k here.
I'm sure they'll be valuable since they're limited production, but the two factors that I could see being a question mark versus the Morizo: 1. Built in England or in Japan? Stupid as it sounds, English built will devalue it compared to the Morizo. 2. Will the production cap be per year (like the Circuit) or a total production cap. If it's a one year only small run special, it'll hold value quite well.
That'll lead to what happened with the Morizo IMO - after the scalpers, the remaining cars will rot on dealer showroom floors. Unfortunate, because this looks like it'll be a lot of fun to drive, even over my Circuit trim car.
Not if you're buying an appliance or toilet paper.
My point was that the people who spend big money on his car won't care about the price tag or performance per dollar. It's a passion purchase for them to have the coolest or greatest version of the GRC made by Toyota.
Feel like people are being intentionally dense and missing your point.
I get what you're saying; this thing's going to cost way more than anything vaguely comparable would cost. It will illicit so many more "$X for a COROLLA!? For that much you could get XYZ" kind of posts, far more so than a regular GR Corolla ever did.
Did you buy a reasonably priced air fryer relative to all the other air fryers on the market, or did you spend a LOT more for an extra fancy GE [or whatever brand] because you just really like [whatever brand]?
What does that even mean mate, you can say that about literally any purchase. Person exchanging money for goods like goods more than money, yeah obviously or they wouldn't be buying it.
Spending $40K on a Mustang is one thing. Spending $300K on a Mustang GTD [or whatever it's called] is a whole different thing.
The GRMN Corolla is to be available in limited quantities, primarily in Japan, North America, and Australia. In Japan, plans are to accept sales negotiations requests
This is gonna be a similarly hyper limited thing where there really just isn't anything like it. You're not buying a commuter car that has competition on the open market, you're applying to buy a collection piece.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the GRGT is sold at all. It was unveiled as their new concept GT and at least one was made, but it’s not a production car and it’s not for sale.
I think GR brand really need an independent showroom and selling system like Japanese one.
Isn't that the plan? It's just waiting for more models to come out to actually be launched I think...you couldn't exactly sustain a whole dealership on GR Corollas and 86s at the present moment.
The biggest bummer with this car is that Toyota dealers suck and I'm sure they'll mark up the shit out of these. Second biggest is that US gets the dumb seats
I think it's awesome that Toyota is doing this but I wish they had a special GRC model in a more rally-focused direction. Also every time I see the interior I remember the current Corolla is old as shit. I'm sure the bean counters are loving these new GR updates every year and wringing this platform totally bone dry but it would be nice to get a better base car
The TNGA-C platform was new for the Corolla in late 2018. Toyota gets 15+ years out of a platform. Even the next gen Corolla will largely still be on the same platform. The base car updates will largely be interior and exterior styling. There is generally a push to stretch major model changes from 5-6 years out to 7-10 years. For low margin cars like the regular Corolla (compact sedans), I fully expect this to be embraced by all automakers.
Our prices don’t quite aline with yours when it comes to conversion. But I would venture $60k for the States. And that’s before the shitty markups. In Canada I would say it’s going to be near 70 loonies as Morizo’s already went over 62-ish.
I think this is going to be flirting with like Nismo Z money, and the Nismo does now offer a manual too. So if you're going to abandon the Corolla practicality, idk, the Z's sleek looks and 6-cylinder soundtrack would be quite enticing. And I haven't compared every lap with official times but with the Lightning Lap for example the Z Nismo auto was comfortably quicker for those who are heavily influenced by lap times.
Still super glad this car exists. I just.....for me at those prices for the sacrifices, I'd chicken out and downgrade to the standard GR and enjoy a fantastic machine.
The 23/24 Circuit Edition GRC's don't have any extra cooling components over the base models. In 2025, all GRC trims added an underbody cooling duct aimed at the transfer case and some reprogrammed torque split logic, but this doesn't fully resolve the limp mode issue on track.
It isn't a diff problem. At all. It isn't the clutchpack that locks the prop shaft to the rear diff, either. It is the transfer case temp. There is a temp sensor in the clutchpack that the ECU uses to interpolate the transfer case temp. The '25 or '26 improved the cooling of the transfer case and adjusted the way the ECU uses that data from the clutchpack to go in to FWD mode. The aftermarket fix is to add more transfer case cooling (tying into cooling system, more fluid) and effectively tells the ECU the actual transfer case temps rather than estimating it from the clutchpack system.
The new model is now on display at the Fuji Motorsports Forest Welcome Center until June 28
If anyone gets the chance to visit the Fuji/Okayama/Hakone area, I highly recommend hiring a car and visiting the welcome centre, even if the track isn't open. Bunch of older, unrestored GR racing/Rookie garage race cars still sporting battle damage, a range of concepts, and an upper floor gantry that leads over the top of the Rookie Garage stalls so you can see them prepping GT3/Super Taikyu/etc. cars for racing. Some of the best roads in the world (and a 30km/h limit, so calm down Takumi) on the way there, too.
Some of the best roads in the world (and a 30km/h limit, so calm down Takumi)
That’s my big issue with driving in Japan. Tons of great roads with great scenery, but abysmally low limits, and oftentimes abysmally narrow lane widths, meaning it’s impossible to safely enjoy them. Driving back roads in the US is actually more fun IMO.
You know, from what I hear, especially in the 2000's Toyota was seen as the boring everyday car brand, and Honda the one for enthusiasts.
But as stuff like the GR series really offers something for "throw it around" enthusiasts, their off-road and truck options are popular and numerous, and their everyday cars are just generally good especially with hybridization...it seems to me the tables have turned greatly.
It doesn't help Honda, while having a good core, has never put a strong foot forward with pickup trucks, the only fairly recent Passport is about the closest they've ever come to touching the 4Runner, the Prelude mistep...I wonder if the Honda enthusiasm has waned a bit in people's minds.
This is what made me especially interested in how their EV catastrophe has now screwed around with the development cycles of their normal cars. Because if you can't compete with Toyota on their more niche or enthusiasm/lifestyle cars, and the everyday ones age out while everyone else (especially Kia/Hyundai) updates... it's not an optimal position, I imagine.
It depends model by model. But the 3rd TRD Tacoma Off Road had upgraded suspension skid plates and lockers compared to other non off roads. I believe its similar for the 4th gen. While the TRD sedans was mostly cosmetic.
The fastest car in their lineup for like a decade was the V6 RAV4. They didn't make anything even resembling a sports car between the Celica (which wasn't one anyway) and FT86, a 7 year span. Just Camry, Corolla, Avalon, and trucks, SUVs, and the Sienna. They were as boring as boring gets.
I've become a big toyota fan in the last few years despite never really caring about them as a kid. Just everything they are doing makes me respect and appreciate them. I'm more excited for what toyota is going to build over porsche and mazda now, 12 year old me would aghast at that haha.
There is LBX Morizo RR, and it's available in your country OZ. I think that one is already to respond RS3 and A45. This GRMN Corolla is going to respond limited edition Golf GTI/Rs.

It’s *almost* perfect…the only let down? Number of cylinders…
Astramael@reddit
I consider this to be an advantage of the car over its 4 cylinder rivals.
masterventris@reddit
It's the best 3 cylinder ever built though. A 4 cylinder wouldn't improve anything about the car.

Gimme one of these, an LX as a daily (since we don't get the Land Cruiser 300 stateside), and a GR GT plz.

I've become a big toyota fan in the last few years despite never really caring about them as a kid. Just everything they are doing makes me respect and appreciate them. I'm more excited for what toyota is going to build over porsche and mazda now, 12 year old me would aghast at that haha.

instead of spending 80 grand on a Corolla, what else could you buy?
bmacir@reddit
It’s great, and I agree. I still maintain that having more cylinders would improve a few aspects, first and foremost the sound.

Just give me a GR Corolla SEDAN already!

I… love this.

This thing is going to end up costing more than an RS3 or A45S, isn't it?
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
There is LBX Morizo RR, and it's available in your country OZ. I think that one is already to respond RS3 and A45. This GRMN Corolla is going to respond limited edition Golf GTI/Rs.
Mahatma_Ghandicap@reddit
Give these absolute maniacs 8-9 years time cook and we'll be detting Corollas that'll mog Godzilla's from factory 🤣

Kinda the thing people were trying to do in Japan with the AE86s.
