The Mustang Dark Horse SC High equipment group package, costs more money than an entire brand new Ecoboost Mustang

The Dark Horse SC 970A high equipment group package costs $36,500 and includes the following
- 20x11.5 Carbon Fiber Rims
- Carbon Ceramic Brakes
- Special tuning for the Magneride system
- Unique exterior badge color
- Carbon Fiber rear wing
- Adjustable top strut mounts
- An Oil Catch Can
- Manually Adjustable Recaro Sport Seats
- A Flat Bottom steering wheel
- Painted brake calipers
- Rear Seat Delete
Compared to the Base price of a Ecoboost Mustang which is $35,330 after delivery and includes an entire Car.
Ignoring the fact that most of the high equipment package is stuff you would hope comes already included in the $110,000 base price, it's quite impressive we've reached the point on mustangs where option packages can rival the price of an entire vehicle. Yes carbon fiber components are expensive, and likely make up the bulk of the cost here, but it's worth mentioning that a mere 4 years ago, a very similar carbon fiber package for the GT500 cost a relatively paltry $18,500

I still don't get who is buying this over a C8 GS/GSX or slightly used Z06
lumpialarry@reddit
Guys that have always loved Mustangs have a net worth where they don't have to worry about cost.
SnikySquirrel@reddit
Jesus Christ, that’s Porsche levels of upcharging.
narwhal_breeder@reddit
Ford is trying to make the Mustang aspirational without making the platform itself good.
Coming from a former S550 GT Performance Pack owner.
The S650s game plan was just to cut costs and raise prices.
erbot@reddit
The platform is objectively fine, but as you said they didnt improve it just cut costs.
hurricanePopsicles@reddit
Custom color paint jobs from Porsche cost more than that
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
How much do you think carbon wheels, carbon ceramic brakes, camber plates, recaros, a catch can, and all that aero should cost?
babygirlmelissa@reddit
Ah yes, $36,500 for some carbon fiber and a rear seat delete. Because nothing says 'performance bargain' like paying the price of a second car just so I don't have to carry passengers.
TomcatZ06@reddit
I mean, carbon wheels are crazy expensive. That's probably most of the cost.
caterham09@reddit (OP)
Ford was asking $18,500 for a very similar carbon package on the gt500. It gave you the exposed carbon rims, and carbon fiber spoiler.
Big difference is with this car you get the carbon ceramic brakes. Though they are charging you $18000 for the privilege
gumol@reddit
that sounds fair for carbon ceramic brakes
caterham09@reddit (OP)
Chevrolet charges $17,500 for carbon ceramic brakes AND the carbon fiber wheels on the Z06 corvette. You're basically paying double for a similar package on the mustang
Bobmcjoepants@reddit
It's not necessarily apples to apples though. It very likely is different suppliers, they might be bigger, more carbon fibre used and of course the "fuck you we can" tax as it's for rich people who will pay it regardless
throw_me_away3478@reddit
Lol
Bobmcjoepants@reddit
Just throwing out ideas
caterham09@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure you can get more apples to apples than getting the same equipment on both cars. The corvette wheels are actually larger than the mustang ones as well.
willpc14@reddit
Maybe there are economies at scale working in favor of the Corvette? I just spitballing though.
JetPoweredJerk@reddit
This is what I’m thinking is the biggest factor, other than when the PO’s were filled. Chevy ordered way more a couple years ago. Ford is paying more current market at what is likely a fraction of what Chevy has from a volume standpoint
primetimecsu@reddit
if you want to go apples to apples'ish, youd be quoting the $27k package that gives you the z07 magnetic suspension, carbon wing, carbon wheels and carbon brakes.
So a little bit cheaper, but you dont get everything that comes in Ford's package either.
JALbert@reddit
Chevy also charges $10k more for the CF aero, putting the packages pretty similar.
Also, the company that makes the carbon wheels for both companies lost hundreds of millions of dollars over the last 4 years. It's very possible Chevy is getting the wheels below the functional cost for that company to make them.
Prison-Butt-Carnival@reddit
Tesla charged $20k for carbon brakes, lighter wheels and a tune. Seems to be the going rate....
wolfpack_57@reddit
I think I remember seeing Fords Australian carbon wheel company was losing tens of millions a year though.
primetimecsu@reddit
just go look at pricing for these kind of parts.
carbon ceramic brake kit for a dark horse starts at 10-15K
Ford carbon fiber wheels at least $12k (GT500 carbon fiber wheels are $4k each from ford)
then add in all the other stuff youre getting and its not hard to get to that price point
hurricanePopsicles@reddit
Carbon Ceramic brakes make up a lot of that cost. They are not cheap
USS-Hellcat@reddit
Gone are the days of 70k Hellcats and Camaro ZL1s. Now we're seeing the top end Mustang approach (and possibly exceed) 150k decked out.
Roboticpoultry@reddit
Hey now they’ll also paint your calipers and give you an exclusive badge color
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
Never mind the camber plates, catch can, recaros, or aero
dreaminphp@reddit
some idiots will pay more than that for additions that are similar on their f150s/250s
(it's me, i'm the idiot)
rosen380@reddit
I have a 1993 Corvette; the base price was $34,595.
The ZR1 special performance package, was very nearly that much, at $31,683, but at least it included an entirely different engine.
gumol@reddit
carbon rims and carbon ceramic brakes are expensive
Fast-Apartment8324@reddit
wild times
TomcatZ06@reddit
I feel like everyone complaining here skipped that first bullet point. Carbon fiber wheels are always tens of thousands of dollars.
caterham09@reddit (OP)
Chevrolet charges $17,500 for the package that includes carbon fiber rims and carbon ceramic brakes on the Z06
Eggith@reddit
Chevrolet also released a $20,000 Carbon Package for the base ZL1
DanielG165@reddit
Sure. But why is said carbon fiber tied to an all encompassing package that ultimately costs the price of an entire car? GM will happily give you a Z06 w Z07, or ZR1 w ZTK, both of which include carbon fiber everywhere, wheels included, for $17,500. Not chump change, but also not $36k. Hell, the ZR1 comes standard with a ton of bodywork made out of carbon fiber.
humdizzle@reddit
this is the world we are in. The amount of optional extras you can add to an M3 cost more than a 330i. Dont even look at how expensive you can option up a 911 or boxster.
the ceramic brakes, carbon wheels, and sport seats are probably like 75% of the cost on this package.
THEREALCABEZAGRANDE@reddit
Carbon fiber wheels are a third of that. If the seats are carbon fiber buckets, there's another $6k-$8k. Carbon ceramic brakes in that ginormous size are all of $8k-$12k. Its not an absurd price, those are all EXPENSIVE items. Would I pay that damn much to shave 150 lbs and have marginally better on track braking? Hell no. But none of the big ticket items in there are cheap.
taticalgoose@reddit
OP missed the most egregious option, the $30,980 Track Pack Special Edition which includes:
Available on Mustang Dark Horse® SC High (970A) with Shadow Black and Oxford White Exterior Paints only.
Replaces Classic Package when ordered.
Includes:
• Black Painted Roof*
• Brembo™ Brake Calipers – Race Red and Carbon Ceramic Brake Rotors
• Carbon Fiber Exterior Package
• Hood & Decklid Graphic – Painted Tarnish Dark Anodized
• Exhaust Extension – Black Painted
• Seat Belt – Black with Red Stripe
• 3D Printed Titanium Paddle Shifter and Rotary Shifter Trim
• Serialized IP Badging
• RECARO® Seats – Solar Red
I got quite the surprise when I had no other options selected then checked the box for the red interior which resulted in a net price change of $67,480 for the SE package and OP's track pack. Total cost: $175,965.
Absolutely not.

What the heck is an oil catch can?
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
It's a reservoir that separates oil from the air in the PCV system so that oil doesn't get into to the intake and coat the valves.
3MATX@reddit
Gotcha. My mind went to some plastic contraption meant to prevent drips from assumed manufacture issues.
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
that would be very silly
gumol@reddit
it’s a can that catches oil
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_catch_tank
real_fake_hoors@reddit
You know what? I’m going to say it.
I don’t care about carbon fiber.
doug910@reddit
It’s interesting that the package provides an oil catch can. While so many people blindly insist that they’re needed, I am firmly of the mindset that if the engineers deemed a catch can as necessary, it would have came with it from the factory. Seeing things like this makes you wonder if they’re actually beneficial or not for general applications.
DanielG165@reddit
Honestly, as the OP stated, all this stuff should have come with the Dark Horse SC as standard. It’s supposed to be the significantly beefier version, no? Outside of the CF wheels and higher rear wing, everything else should’ve been standard equipment.
That’s what made something like the 6th gen ZL1 so great, as it gave you essentially everything as standard, with the only items like a sunroof, PDR, trans option, and a convertible option being boxes that could be ticked separately. Then, the even crazier ZL1 1LE gave you everything as standard also, or added specific equipment for track use I.E.: smaller lightweight wheels, R comps, track aero, DSSV spool valve dampers, thinner rear glass, underbody strakes etc.
This is Porsche levels of penny pinching.
arcticrobot@reddit
Shut up and take my money!
Obi_Juan_Kenobie@reddit
Might even have to trade my old one for the new badge!
Penguinho@reddit
Wow that's crazy it costs almost as much as putting paint on a 911
Motor-Drama-1421@reddit
Ford be like...if Porsche can do it, why not use?
gumol@reddit
Porsche only offers carbon wheels as an option on 911 Turbo S
Skensis@reddit
I feel you're mostly paying for the wheels and brakes here.
caterham09@reddit (OP)
Certainly. Carbon fiber is expensive. Just insane pricing though.
$36,500 is more than I paid for my brand new GT back in 2021
gumol@reddit
is it insane pricing or just expensive options?
caterham09@reddit (OP)
Realistically both.
