Is Bentley’s Range Rover rival still a relevant car and worth the money?

Far far superior interior in the Bentley. JLR interior is the same exact interior as most low-mid luxury cars
Manafont-@reddit
Range Rover interiors hold up to any interior on the market at any price. Even the Sport is excellent.
walnut100@reddit
I’m sorry but have you been in the big boy Range Rover? Because that’s just an outright lie.
strongmanass@reddit
The Bentayga is one of the most disappointing cars I've driven in the past year. So much turbo lag, understeer, and body roll. It felt no different from a GLS or X7...or maybe even a Q7. It was just dressed up better inside. I mean it was fine. It was a lovely ride and really it wasn't meant to be flung into a corner the way I did; at 6/10 and below how owners drive it the dynamics are fine.
But it left me feeling like the $150K premium over the Germans is just badge and wood/stone veneer options. It's not a better vehicle at all, and that was the disappointment. I haven't driven the Range Rover, but I'm curious to see how it compares as it basically splits the difference between Bentley and the Germans.

“It was just dressed up better inside”
I think you have answered yourself already
strongmanass@reddit
That alone isn't enough for me as a buyer. It's not a matter of whether the Bentayga is successful for Bentley - clearly it is. It just doesn't feel special once you start moving. IMO it's the worst vehicle they sell by a wide margin. The other cars feel special, but at its core the Bentayga just feels too ordinary.
killshelter@reddit
Well that’s the best part. It is a German car.
strongmanass@reddit
If I'm looking at a Bentayga it's because the Germans are too pedestrian/boring/predictable/familiar and I want something new/exciting/exotic/special. I don't want the driving experience of a Bentley to be the same. In that case I may as well stick to the Germans. Bentayga maintenance and repair bills are way more than the Q7. It may as well feel like a more special car so you get something in return.
killshelter@reddit
I completely agree. I understand why the Urus and Bentayga exist. I just find it funny when a lot of the buyers don’t understand why they’re not part of the club they’ve tried to buy into.
strongmanass@reddit
That entire segment between the GLS price point and the Cullinan/Purosangue price point is German parts bin. Q7/Cayenne/Bentayga/Urus, AMG V8/DBX, BMW V8/Range Rover. At least the Aston and Range Rover only use German engines but have their own platforms. I haven't driven either so I'll put them aside. But otherwise I feel like there's no value in that part of the segment. It's crazy to me that once you pass GLS/X7 you have to spend 4x on a Rolls Royce or Ferrari to get an SUV that feels special.
Monster_Dumps_2026@reddit
The rolls royce def took a large chunk from them though. It went from the premier luxury SUV for 3 years to being the bargain choice for the rich
Arben72@reddit
Bentayga is long in the tooth because Porsche threw all their suv chassis money on the electric cayenne. Vw group messed up hard on that call.
AdaTex@reddit
It's honestly a "Luce" level of fuckup. They took a huge swing on their core money making product and missed completely. The pain is only just beginning to be felt.
phoenix823@reddit
Neither are worth the money. If I had the choice of one for free, I'd have the Bentley. I'm more interested in learning how bespoke the suspension and ride is in the SUV compared to the other Bentleys. Because I want to say that if you're in the market for a Bentley, the SUV is the only one to have these days.
Otherwise_Rub_4557@reddit
They make more sence to me that the Cayenne or Urus. I'd go Escalade or X5; but In the ultra luxury market at all. If I had to spend 200k plus on a SUV, it would 100 percent be a Range Rover, following by the Bentley.
James_Vowles@reddit
Cayenne I can understand, but the Urus makes no sense. It's simply bought for the badge. You can say the same for the Bentley I think.
I would also buy a Range Rover in that scenario, they have a better brand when it comes to luxury SUVs, and it's ability to off road makes it 'cool', at least to me as a petrolhead
Otherwise_Rub_4557@reddit
I dont know, I know two people who's wifes have new Cayennes i have driven in. Interior just doesn't seem special to me at all. Its a nice VW, but for the price the interiors just seem boring.
James_Vowles@reddit
I suppose a lot of buyers are also buying the badge with the Cayenne but its a pretty good usable car and it's priced better, where you would expect one of these cars to be priced
phoenix823@reddit
I agree, I don't see the sense in buying a chunky Porsche or Urus SUV. Though I'm not a big Lambo fan, if I had to have one I'd have the Urus. The X5 is the only one of those I'd actually spend my money on (and almost did...) but I found the law of diminishing returns kicked in once I started looking at anything nicer than the Lexus RX I ended up buying.
hi_im_bored13@reddit (OP)
~~Betteridge's law of headlines~~ No? Yes? Depends on what you want, they argue it's still a competitive luxury car, even if its behind the British offerings on the sporty side of things.
Though they chalk up that luxury to "a more prestigious badge and for some, its more traditional cabin," the interior has aged incredibly well but I'll take the Range Rover badge and a $100k discount with it
Hustletron@reddit
That’s why it is awesome to rich people, tho.
Because poors take the discount and go with Range Rover.
5GCovidInjection@reddit
Problem is no one recognizes the Bentayga until they get really close to see the Bentley badge, whereas a Range Rover is instantly recognizable.
If you want universally respected status, you get it with the Range Rover
smashingcones@reddit
Are they universally respected, though? Anytime I see one I think oof, surprised it's on the road at all lol
Kavani18@reddit
Because they’re junk or because they’re really expensive?
smashingcones@reddit
Because they're notoriously unreliable.
BigSweatyYeti@reddit
That’s why you don’t own one out of warranty.
Kavani18@reddit
I know lmao. I was joking, of course it’s because they’re junk. I do the same thing when I see one on the road💀
BigSweatyYeti@reddit
Only poors care about reliability. Rich buy new with a warranty and trade it in before the 4 years is up. Any issues during warranty and they just get a nice new loaner to drive for a short period.
BWFTW@reddit
When they work they are so nice though. Lovely to drive, surprisingly good EPS, really nice power trains, amazing nvh. Idk they just feel so good. My family has a few modern rovers and touch wood they have all been reliable so far. Honestly I think a lot of the issues are over blown, if you take care of them they will work well. Though what do I know, I drive an FD, my barometer for reliable is if my car doesn't embarrass me in public when I try to start it 🤣.
gimpwiz@reddit
I see the Bentayga pretty regularly and find it highly recognizable, but I am probably a deep minority in that. I can see it looking just like a normal SUV/crossover for the most part.
birdseye-maple@reddit
Very few people recognize a Range Rover these days.
James_Vowles@reddit
I think most will actually go for the Range Rover. The Bentley seems to be forgotten about, or doesn't that the status the RR has.
strongmanass@reddit
I'm assuming this is a joke. Plenty of people with Bentley money choose Range Rovers instead for a variety of reasons. One is that Range Rover were willing to make a luxury SUV while Bentley turned their nose up at the body style. Another is the Bentley badge is too gauche for some places. You see tons of Range Rovers in $3 million neighborhoods in Boston; almost no Bentaygas. Even the G-Wagen is too flashy for some of those neighborhoods. Third, not everyone with money has something to prove. You don't have to spend it just because you have it.
hi_im_bored13@reddit (OP)
> 15,000-unit yearly sale barrier for the first time in 2022, with the Bentayga accounting for 42 per cent of those sales
It's not like the rich are buying it in droves, 6,300 units/yr? JLR surely sells more sv ultras alone, they sell 10x the number of range rovers overall in the US alone
BWFTW@reddit
Has anyone done a good betayga, vs urus, vs sq8rs vs cayenne turbo gt yet?
The other day I caught myself looking at some used urus for fun instead of gallardos. And doing that thing of like, will you know that would actually be a cool daily, and maybe I could if I did xyz kind of thing. Then I caught myself and imeaditely started looking at shitbox s chassis cars to cleanse my palette. I'm really worried that means I'm getting old now haha.
specialcommenter@reddit
Aren’t all of those the same car, same engine just different suspension & exhaust tune?
BWFTW@reddit
Yes that's their point haha.
drseruzawa@reddit
Is it as unreliable as an RangeRover? Everyone I've known who bought a RangeRover was sorry.
James_Vowles@reddit
and yet there's still so many on the road
Baby-girl-54321@reddit
Both make sense, just for different buyers.
agroundhere@reddit
Still?
It's certainly still ugly.
The2026Account@reddit
It never was. Bentley = GT car. The SUV never made sense.
ruraljurorrrrrrrrrr@reddit
Are you suggesting it doesn’t make sense for Bentley to make an SUV because their lineup has 1 GT car in it? Bentley’s brand is primarily luxury and SUVs fit with that exceptionally well.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Pre-war Bentley models were with today's SUV shape, it isn't really wrong to to have SUV model.
TheGhostofJoeGibbs@reddit
These Euroreg plug in hybrid offerings are awful. Just have to be made whether they make sense for the vehicle or brand thanks to the regulators.
