I have an interest in urban exploration and decay, abandoned places, old buildings. I can’t say I’ve been brave enough to venture past any fences but my kid recently said if there was a place near us you weren’t supposed to be, I’ve probably found it. I’ve got some very cool books and follow some interesting people on social media. But as a middle aged woman, I keep my interest on the down low as I don’t really fit the typical urban explorer profile!

The inside of my house registered 27.5 degrees this afternoon. Absolutely insane. I love the summer, my body physically feels better when it’s hot but dang is it hard to get anything done when every part of you is sweating! I will grin and bear it because it will be over all too soon. Now excuse me while I stand in front of the open freezer 😅

What are some “posh” soft drinks that I could buy to have at home?

Parents are such downers! Ex in laws went on and on about the cons of our house when we bought it (2002) and assumed we had no effing idea what we were doing as if we hadn’t looked round twice and had surveys, etc like rational adults. Told them not to come visit seeing as they didn’t approve! Funny thing was they rented and hadn’t had a mortgage, so in fact knew less than we did! You must do what you feel comfortable doing, and personally I think you made the right decision. We did the same, offered what was asked several times over the years because we really liked the properties. Good luck going forward.

What are you doing over this bank holiday?

The same as every day. Caring for my disabled son, chores, might go for a walk. Watch TV. Or if the current weather keeps up, lay on the sofa and pant like a dog!

My mother refused to have a washing machine. Doggedly hand washed everything in the sink and/or bathtub. We also had a spinner to remove the water, just remember to put a washing up bowl under it and empty it promptly! Did this til I was 19. This was the mid 90s btw, not pre war. Insisted that an automatic washing machine was unnecessary and a huge inconvenience. The flat already had plumbing ready for a machine. Got our first machine when I met my boyfriend and he needed to wash his work clothes when he stayed at weekends. We bought it, got it up to the flat and installed it. Refused to use it so I still ended up doing all the washing.

Met Peter Andre whilst he was filming Sixty Second Makeover. He and the crew were larking about in the car park during a break, and then he came up the street when he spotted me holding my tiny baby cousin. Very charming and professional chap, he absolutely knows how to carry himself around members of the public and was so lovely. Obviously being a dad he homed in on the baby which was cute. Chatted briefly and got a hug and a photo. He’s every bit as handsome and well turned out as he looks in the media.

As a Brit, do you think you swear too often?

Aphr0dite19@reddit

Probably. But not in front of other people’s children (mine are adults), mil, or general public in shops, bus stops etc. Most of my friends are similar so I don’t think it’s a problem. I like a bit of colourful language.

I cringe thinking about this now but in junior school I told my friend I had an older sister called Lorraine who lived in America and was a model. My friend believed me and even told her family! Didn’t occur to her (or her mum) that my mum was much too young to have an adult child 😅I guess I was a lonely kid and wanted a sibling so I made one up.

Several diamond engagement rings handed down through mine/ex dh family to me. One belonged to my great grandma and the other a great aunt of my ex fil. Both probably around 100 years old. Also my great grandmas tiny Bible. Not as old, but my christening gown. I was only a few weeks old so it’s now 51. There’s probably a few other bits and pieces but it’s late and I’m tired 😅

I don’t really know where the long running thing came from that the Brits don’t like the French. I like the French, and I like France. Sailed over to visit Caen numerous times, never gets boring. My friends take their kids to the French euro camps in the summer, apparently all fantastic so they keep going back.

Neighbour kids told my mum I was swearing to myself while playing on their back garden swing. I got a proper slapping for that without even being asked if it was true, which it was not. This happened a lot, other kids telling tales about me; I’d get into instant trouble, be punished, each time not being asked if it was true, she always believed other people over me. None of us had an easy childhood back then and I guess mine might have been a tad nicer which other kids picked up on, their reaction was to get me into trouble and they knew I’d get a slap. Fun times.

Sending cheques for treat money/Christmas/birthdays as they refuse point blank to use internet banking. Up until the last couple of years I’d have to find time to go all the way to town on the bus to cash it in at the bank. I can do it on the app now, hurrah! And insisting on putting my name on it despite the kids all being in their 20s and having their own bank accounts (and one doesn’t live at home any more)!

‘You’ve been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you’ve changed All the money in the world couldn’t buy back those days’. This Is The Day, The The 1983. Also further into the song: ‘But the side of you they’ll never see Is when you’re left alone with your memories That hold your life together, like glue’. Another favourite of mine: ‘Look at me standing Here on my own again Up straight in the sunshine’. Wonderful Life, Black. 1987.

That was a nice thing to do, and I hope she felt a bit better. I would love to get Love heart sweets at the Dr lol! But no it’s probably best not to have sweet treats (parents can make that choice at home), so stickers, mini rubbers, little pencil packs, small keyring/fiddle toys. Temu might be your best friend here 😁

How many people have keys to their parents house?

I never had keys to either of my parent’s homes. Doubt my Dad’s wife would have appreciated that lol! And my Mum lived in the Channel Islands, a bit pointless to have a key to a house that I’d need a plane to get to! My adult children have house keys, this is their home regardless of where they go in life. My neighbour has a spare, she’s probably forgotten though, it’s been so long!

How painful is it to get your tooth pulled out?

Posted by Separate_Shower5269@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 286 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

The relief of the pain you’re in being suddenly over far outweighs the brief discomfort of the anaesthetic needle. You simply will not feel the tooth being pulled, and possibly it’ll be over so fast it will surprise you. Concentrate on the light above you or the dental nurse talking and you won’t even see the needle.

I once froze a carton of some fancy brand leek and potato soup, then defrosted it upright in a saucepan. It came out the same shape as the carton and just stood up right in the pan even when defrosted. It eventually squashed down so I could heat it up. It tasted and felt like wet cardboard. Absolutely vile, I don’t know what I did wrong 😅 Slow cooker sausage casserole. Couldn’t thicken it and then over thickened it. I ate cardboard soup and this casserole was somehow worse.

My dentist is awesome, so I trust that if he’s recommended something to me, it is the right thing. I’m NHS so he’s not making money off me either lol. I didn’t have bad teeth but years of not brushing well had to be undone, and my teeth are prone to being sensitive so we narrowed it down to Colgate Sensitive Instant Relief Repair + Multi Protection. Reasonable at £2.85 in Lidl. I tried the Sensodyne equivalent (he gave me several trial size to try), but the second it touched my mouth it became inflamed and so painful. No idea what that was about, but never again.

I went to Egypt years ago, sailed into Port Said where we were immediately ambushed by a lot of street vendors when we disembarked. As if that wasn’t overwhelming enough they also had young children trying to sell things too, and I saw them openly being beaten for not making any sales to us tourists. Heartbreaking and shocking, I was totally unprepared and obviously I wanted to intervene. My dh at the time pulled me back, as I also hadn’t noticed the armed police/guards standing around everywhere. I’m not naive but I’d never seen a gun in real life, let alone so close up. I’m sure it’s pretty normal life there and this was a while back.
