What’s a tiny thing that instantly makes your home feel comforting after a long day?

Lately I have realized it’s rarely the “big” things. Sometimes it’s just warm lighting, taking a shower, making late-night tea, hearing background music, or even throwing your phone away for a bit. Small routines somehow make a place feel safe and familiar, especially on exhausting days. I’m curious what that thing is for other people. What’s the one small habit, object, sound, or routine that immediately makes you feel relaxed the moment you get home?

Remembering i wont ever have kids. There is no better feeling than being childless!!!
AirconGuyUK@reddit
I am also childless and will likely stay childless, but this is a kinda weird thing to first come to mind.
I don't understand why people on reddit are so loud and proud about this particular deicison.
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
Its literally a brag at this point :)
AirconGuyUK@reddit
But what are you bragging about? It's extremely easy to not have children, you just don't do it. It's bragging about not doing something that's completely optional.
It's one of those weird Redditisms that I will probably never understand.
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
you are a man, you wouldn't understand my point of view lol
AirconGuyUK@reddit
You think us men don't get asked if we want children or when we're going to have children?
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
Nah bro. Its not that.
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
but I also agree! its so easy not to get preggo!!!
Impressive_Being6179@reddit (OP)
thats sad, why what happened?!
ScoreNumerous@reddit
Many people feel that way. I don't think it's sad. It's a life choice like any other.
Swimming-Lie5369@reddit
They probably just like being able to switch off and relax after a day if work, rather than working a second job as a parent
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
Yesssss
Swimming-Lie5369@reddit
I feel that
One of my coworkers has 3 young kids and a very mentally and physically demandng job and I genuinely have no idea how
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
Nothing? Im healthy and can have kids. I just dont wanna.
ctaccx@reddit
how is that sad lmao
AuroraDF@reddit
I'm with you. Not exactly the same. But I'm with kids all day, and getting home and shutting my front door and being completely alone is my favourite thing.
sausagemouse@reddit
Do you forget when you're at work?
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
Nope! Still makes me happy at work, but i enjoy it the most at home cuz its when i sleep in, watch movies, feel cosy
sausagemouse@reddit
Oh OK. Just seemed like a weird answer to the question

Floor lights instead of ceiling lights
Ok-Statement-2578@reddit
On the back of this, I also recently put 'smart' bulbs in my bedside lamps. I don't use any other 'smart' tech in my home but I've put these on a timer so when it starts getting dark (I adjust for seasons) my lamps come on automatically and makes the bedroom feel so welcoming. I live alone so it's nice to have a room that isn't just darkness when I come home from work. I plan on getting some more for some other lamps.
danddersson@reddit
(With many smart bulbs or plugs you can set them to come on at a certain period e.g. an hour - before or after sunset. So no need to 'adjust for the seasons!)
snakeoildriller@reddit
I tried the sunset option but the weather's so weird we often have summer levels of lighting or the leaden-grey clouds overhead makes it seem like almost-nighttime.
snakeoildriller@reddit
Oh yeah 😁 "Siri, turn on the globe light..." "sorry I can't seem to find that in your music library"
Electronic_Branch_13@reddit
This is a great idea!!
Impressive_Being6179@reddit (OP)
that too warm lights!?
Electronic_Branch_13@reddit
Yup! Always warm or colored, i have one pink light and one warm and together they just make my living room alive. Ceiling lights remind me of my office i never have them on.
snakeoildriller@reddit
Siri turning on the 2 floor lights on in the lounge, on a timer. I could reach over and do it, but hey, why should I ☺️

I always change my trousers, socks and shoes - baggy corduroy trousers, wool socks and slippers. I have 3 different pairs of slippers for different levels of cold, including fleece-lined moccasins, and fleece-lined suede boots (like Uggs).

Right now it's my garden i think. Reseeded, power washed, painted, planted and what not and it looks really good. Everybody was out on Sunday afternoon but me and I sat on my comfy garden furniture with a cup of coffee on the table and sone music on in the sun, absolute bliss.

Scentsy wax melts on (Fireside/spiced flavours).
Low golden lighting.
Decafe coffee, feet up......until the kids come in and go crazy.
Thats about all I need.

Seeing the cat walk towards me, pleased that I'm home but then remembering that I heartlessly left him alone for ten hours so he turns round and walks away.

My cat does that - but when he walks away it’s because he expects me to follow in order to watch him eat.

Fresh flowers on the table. Nothing expensive, it can be a few cuttings from the garden in a secondhand vase. They brighten up the place so beautifully.
Latte-Addict@reddit
If you have neighbours, take theirs, just a few cuttings, who's to know!
chyper@reddit
Recently I've enjoyed the sunset hour in the house. When the lights come on, dinner is being cooked and tv is on the mundane terrestial shows as background. But harder to enjoy that I the same way as its getting darker later. I still enjoy the cosy switch over.

My dogs and my plants. Neither are ‘tiny things’ - 3 dogs and around 250 plants - but finishing work, taking the dogs for a walk, then hanging out with them while I wander around the house with a glass of róse doing ‘plant chores’ while my wife makes dinner, or works on her art projects is so relaxing.

It’s been my dog’s presence - our hearts would soar coming home to her little tippy tappies and she did this thing where she would go between your legs. We lost her (at a young age) very recently and it’s the smallest moments that are still so crushing and make home feel very empty now :(

Honestly, I work from home so I don't have the traditional walking in after a long day, but my partner coming downstairs after he finishes for the day (I work downstairs and he works upstairs) signalling end end of small time together and time to actively be around each other is it.
When I lived on my own for a bit, I worked one or two days a week in an office and in the winter, coming back to find my partner and cats waiting for me, hot water bottle filled up and ready for evening time.
