In your option what is the greatest dance track of all time and why??
Posted by Majestic_Sun_4273@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 582 comments
I have been living past recently after finding all my old dance compilation CD's and spending hours listening to them. As a man in my mid 40's I forgot the power of music can have on you especially Trance!!
So my question to the group is what is the greatest dance track and why?(House, Techno, Trance, Drum & Bass, and Dubstep)
I have so many I struggle to single one out!!

Best video of all time. Michel Gondry rules!

Such an amazing song. It reminds me of a sunny late autumn day.

Tho picking a number one's unfair to all the others. ridiculous how many great tunes they have, incredible live too

Robert Miles - Children. Timeless
Sad-Garage-2642@reddit
Saltwater - Chicane
Sunchyme - Dario G

Sunchyme is such an incredibly beautiful song. The way it builds up is perfect.
Gingerpett@reddit
Happy house! Happy house all the way for me.

Its one of the greatest songs of all time.
TheNorthernMunky@reddit
Porter Robinson Language is a great shout. Gives me goosebumps
Sad-Garage-2642@reddit
It was the opening tune to one of the Forza Horizon games. As you launch a dirt buggy off a cliff the drop comes. Such a moment.
TheNorthernMunky@reddit
It was the first Forza Horizon - that’s where I first heard it!
MaxBulla@reddit
That Robert Miles track is certainly the one I got most of my speeding tickets from. Did a fair bit of motorway driving when it came out and my foot just wouldn't go down. Expensive but what a tune
Logical_Classic_4451@reddit
The reason he wrote it was to stop people crashing on the drive home 🤦♀️
MaxBulla@reddit
Never crashed in my life and considering my dad had a penchant for heavy underpowered cars I got done for doing 150 on a 130 limit 3 times in a few months. Each attempt took more or less the entire extended remix to get me there. All good 🤣

Leftfield - Song of Life. Not the album version, but the 1992 original. It’s not on Spotify for some reason.

A lot of pop tracks being suggested here - the type of songs that would appear on Top of the Pops. Robert Miles - That’s not dance music to me!
adreamingandroid@reddit
Donna Summer - I Feel Love. That bassline alone has inspired and been sampled countless times. Drop it now and I'd bet you would still get the floor jumping.

I don’t care to presume, and you are fully entitled to your opinion, but… if you were coming of age in the late 90’s, this pretty much is the de facto boss of dance tunes.
Nightclubs were massive, smoke filled, strobe lit, sweaty behemoths. The opening bars would send the hairs on the back of your neck straight up, a thousandfold people unified in what was coming, the start of the beat, the lyrics, all building in to a crescendo of getting in to it slowly. The lights go out, the jet plane flies overhead, then carnage. Blue WKD, Reef, Red Stripe, everywhere. Floors bouncing under the weight of everyone going mental.
ggssmm1@reddit
Yeah I agree / understand even though I wasn't there. Your description fits perfectly how Aviciis Levels hit when it was released in 2011. The vibe was immaculate, and no live recordings you see on YT today make justice to how the crowd reacted to it when it was played.
Salem could be said to SHMs One as well.
I_want_roti@reddit
I might be slightly young to have experienced this but my god I felt this... I'm 30 and haven't been to a club since pre-covid - I couldn't bare the tragedy they are now!
Flaky-You9517@reddit
Shall we all form an orderly queue for the bar?!
Bl0ndie69@reddit
You’ve summed it up perfectly!!! I’ve got goose pimples just thinking about it. They were the best clubbing days.
Flaky-You9517@reddit
What are we all doing tonight?! Let’s go ‘ave it!
MattOG81@reddit
...and the sweat dripping off the ceiling... Oh the sweat.
One of my favourite memories is from an underground rave bar in Manchester. Everybody poured into the street in the early hours of the morning and we all looked like we'd been in a swimming pool.
Flaky-You9517@reddit
The one on St. Anne’s Square with Clint Boon of The Inspiral Carpets guest DJ’ing on a Saturday Night?
MattOG81@reddit
No, the night was called Tangled and it was at Club Phoenix which is on Oxford Road/Booth Street.
Just been on a bit of a nostalgia trip with Google etc. abso-fricken-lutely mental experiences every time, but that one in particular... Whew
Flaky-You9517@reddit
Mate, I hear you. My kids are just about coming up to the age (15) where I’d have been starting to go clubbing in Manchester. Had a pretty good ten years of it before having to start being a grown up and moving round for work and I can’t even say I’ll feel bad if they come back in an absolute state because I guarantee you I’d have been ten times worse. I feel like I want to go get a 20 deck of Marlboro Lights, get the bus in to town, go for a quiet pint in Moon Under The Water, stay out for one more, lose my mates for a solid hour, find them laying on car bonnets with their shirts open, get refused entry at the Ritz cause one of your mates couldn’t stand up for more than a minute, slap them in a taxi, get messy til 3am, 5am send the one mate who didn’t want to come out cause they had work a photo of the five women you’d been talking to and they’d invited you back to there’s for one last tinny, end up on the side of the east Lancs in deckchairs swigging 20/20 as that’s all there was left, watching everyone on their way to work whilst my ears buzz and the taste of kebab meat seeps from every pore, realise the mate you sent a photo to would be leaving for work soon, go wait outside theirs so you can all call them a lightweight when they come out, get the bus home, sleep it off for a few hours and then try again.
Thorpedo870@reddit
You have perfectly described it!
I was slightly younger and started going out maybe 2003/4 but university nights with the strobes/smoke ans everyone in unison losing their minds
Appropriate_Trader@reddit
If you weren’t there at the time and you just listen to it on Spotify then the first 2:20 are gonna be weird and without the atmosphere the drop doesn’t hit as hard.
To some extent you’ll just have to trust us when us oldies say that in the right situation this song is pretty much perfect.

I agree, it's not my personal favourite, but then I'm a bit younger but understand why it was so iconic

paulie_x_walnuts@reddit
I was also a trance and house kid in the late 90s/early 00s and still have quite a few on heavy rotation:
Gouryella - Gouryella
System F - Out of the Blue
Three Drives on a Vinyl - Greece 2000
Olive - You're Not Alone
Dario G - Sunchyme
Mauro Picotto - Komodo
ATB - 9pm (Till I Come)
Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation
Liquid Child - Diving Faces
Y-Traxx - Mystery Land
Binary Finary - 1998/1999
Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes
Delerium w/ Sarah McLachlan - Silence
Energy 52 - Cafe del Mar
In terms of greatest ever, I personally think it's difficult to look past Underworld - Born Slippy. The song is still a banger, was absolutely everywhere, was in the (at the time at least) coolest film ever made during one of the country's biggest cultural high points, and even now, just the first opening bars is enough to elicit an almost visceral reaction from most 40 and 50-something Brits.

Firestarter, or Born Slippy, or I Got a Feeling All for the opening.

Digital? Very analogue. IIRC, it was mostly done on a Moog modular. Slight possibility that he used an early digital sequencer, but even that's doubtful
Realistic-Muffin-165@reddit
Derrick May had this in his set back in the day. It's just so ahead of its time.
Gullible_fool_99@reddit
The long (seven minute I think) version is fantastic.
Kind_Animal_4694@reddit
The 16 minute Patrick Cowley version is better. Personal opinion, of course.
TheClnl@reddit
Blackwater (Full Strings Vocal Mix) by Octave One The Bells - Jeff Mills All Your Love - Deekline and Wizard Halcyon And On And On - Orbital Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb The Nine - Bad Company Messiah - Konflict Born Slippy - Underworld Thunder - Dave Clark Just One Second (Apex Remix) - London Electricity
The list goes on and on, too many to pick a top ten nevermind a single song.
All either something that captures a moment in the culture, or a memory, or just a really well written tune 🤷♂️
Jassida@reddit
The nine is the best dnb track for sure
TheClnl@reddit
Apart from Messiah 🤤
Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
Quality suggestions :)
TheClnl@reddit
Yeah it's a great version too, strings remix is one of those 'moments' tunes for me. We'd got back from a rave, full of E's, I'd met a new girl and my mate dropped it first tune of the after party, bliss.
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
Go full hardcore and let’s have Jeff’s “The Hacker” and “Changes of Life” too
Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
"What's the best dance tune?"
"Jeff Mills"
"Which tune?"
"Yes".
So. Many. Good. Ones. Changes of Life is one of my favourites, but Step To Enchantment, Gamma Player, Alarms, ... literally anything on Purpose Maker, the whole of Waveform Transmissions 1 & 3, literally anything he's done in collaboration with "Mad" Mike Banks, ...
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
Jeff was also one of the best DJs to see live in the 90s
theotherquantumjim@reddit
Upvoting for Messiah. Absolute rave destroyer when it was first getting played
Amda01@reddit
Many. Can't just single out one, Jeff Mills-Bells;Scorchio-Sasha, Emerson; It just won't do-Tim Deluxe; Salsoul Nugget-M&S, the girl next door. The list is endless.
Dico80@reddit
Robin S - Show Me Love, just an unmistakable sound that defined that period for me.
nineteenthly@reddit
I'm afraid I think it's either 'Disco Inferno' or 'Ay No Corrida'. You may not like my answer. I did enjoy early '90s dance music too but after that things faded out for me.
Middle_Lifeguard9419@reddit
SNAP - rhythm is a dancer
Sea_Pomegranate8229@reddit
All about the memories and very subjective. I think that by the time you were duff duffing it was more about the beat than the music. For me trance was to take you on the journey and duff duff was for the ready mashed brain. A couple of my faves though.

Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
Surprised this one hasn't been upvoted more. As far as UK Hard House is concerned, it's got to be *the* tune, right?
theartofnocode@reddit
Hard house was very very niche even back in the day and certainly didn't trouble the mainstream charts like most of the tracks posted here
Beena22@reddit
Oh man, Hooked by Tony de Vit used to be the best when coming up. That brought back some good memories.

Josh Wink- A Higher State of Consciousness. Still gets me moving now in my 50s.
(Also, a close runner up: Primal Scream/ Andy Weatherall- Loaded)
Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
I find that Primal Scream album really weird. In as much as it's probably my favourite album ever, but then the rest of Primal Scream's output is shite.
Which suggests that it's actually Andy Weatherall who's the talent there ;)
Desperate-Cookie3373@reddit
I completely agree- I adore that album, but can take or leave their other stuff. Mr Weatherall was indeed great talent taken too soon.
Grand_Equipment5292@reddit

Voodoo Ray — A Guy Called Gerald
CeeApostropheD@reddit
Couldn't believe a song 3rd from top was one I'd never heard, as a 40 year old.
Went to YouTube and honestly I can understand why. It's good but by no means top tier material.
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
Fun fact : the “Voodoo Ray” voice sample is Peter Cook !
Grouchy-Handle-6031@reddit
Think he's says 'voodoo rage' on the Pete and Dud album?
thebigchil73@reddit
If you already know that then you probably also know the full quote is “voodoo ray guns” but Gerald’s primitive sampler couldn’t manage the whole thing
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
Correct
ratfancier@reddit
I had no idea. That WAS a fun fact. Thank you.
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
One of my favourite pop facts. Along with what connects Eminem and Chas’n’Dave
ratfancier@reddit
Go on then
denisraymond@reddit
Eminem's My Name Is samples I Got The... by Labi Siffre. Chas and Dave were session musicians at the time and played guitar and bass on the track, and can be heard on the sample.

Was listening to a load of old Blackburn rave tunes, this came up. Man, there were some proper tunes back then. No nostalgia from me, I didn't get in to dance music until a decade later, but man ... the late 80s /early 90s had some beauties (acid house, house generally in fact, bleep n bass, early "modern" techno, ..)
Wild-Individual6876@reddit
Finally, something decent among the pop hits suggested here
ChipCob1@reddit
If Manchester had an anthem for the city this would be it!
Grouchy-Handle-6031@reddit
Be a close call between that and Pacific State -808 State
ChipCob1@reddit
Actually I might plump for 808 States remix of Made of Stone by The Stone Roses for the full Manchester effect!
BritishGent_mlady@reddit
Heck of a tune this ❤️
Appropriate_Emu_6930@reddit
One of the greatest. Might be a bit before most people’s time though.
PianoMiddle346@reddit
Now amongst all the bad suggestions, here is a proper one. Good shout.
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
Strong contender
PianoMiddle346@reddit
Trance is terrible, some house is good but yes, far too many to narrow it down.
Top_Bodybuilder4729@reddit
As a point of order, _trance_ isn't terrible. It was just massively over-commercialised and suffered greatly from it. If you look at older trance, acid trance, psytrance, even some of the older tech-trance tunes (before it got infected with cheese-itis) ... there's some great stuff in there.
But you do have to properly dig with trance, because there's A LOT of guff.

Not an individual track but nothing will ever beat early 90s R&S records. So many iconic tunes like energy flash, mentasm, vamp etc. but also loads of lesser known bangers. And the line up of artists in that era is insane.

Too difficult to say,
2000s clubland is my take me back music

Night Flyte (or Flight) Through Babylon - Hallucinogen/Simon Posford (which may in fact be a mix of a different track). Originally found on the SWIV3D soundtrack, was one of the audio tracks on the game CD. And along with Snakey Shaker my introduction to Trance. It's still on my play list. Hallucinogen is still one of my favourite Trance producers (even though I don't think they've released anything new in decades). And if I had to list my top 10 EDM, they'd have 2-3 of the top 10. (Night Flight, Gamm Goblins pt2 & Jiggle The Sphinx).
I've since found other tracks that are as good, but it remains my favourite.

No idea of the name but on the Counter-strike game there was a third party official level mod we used to play at work in the early to mid 00s. If you went to the kitchen in level it was playing dance music.
I loved that level for the music alone and would love to hear it again but my searches have been fruitless.
