What's a flavour or scent that used to be commonplace that you never come across any more?

Always my fave scent on a man. I nearly ended up on some blokes lap on the bus not so long ago because he was wearing Joop Homme. I’m 51, I should probably seek help 😅

People from the UK, what’s one small thing that genuinely improved your daily life?

I bought a tall rgb floor lamp for the front room. The remote has thousands of colours and sequences, I love it. I made a no-buy list to help me in part to stop spending and to cut down on too much stuff; such as candles, throws/blankets, hoodies, lotion, Temu, colouring books/pens (already failed there oops), notebooks, and other bits.My plan is to only buy when things run/wear out. Gifted items are accepted gratefully of course 😁

Would you buy a DVD in 2026?

Posted by OneDay_OneLife@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 225 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I haven’t stopped buying dvds. I got the full Battlestar Galactica dvd boxset for £10 from a charity shop! Films sometimes are removed/cost to buy or rent on streaming platforms so I buy my faves on dvd. The Conjuring 4 is next on my list.

How old are you and when was the last time you were in a nightclub?

51. I went clubbing for the first time in decades last summer. A big group of us went for a close friend’s birthday and had an absolute blast!

What wildlife in the UK do you fear running into alone or is dangerous?

Posted by partylikeafoxstar@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1383 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

An XL dog that the owner cannot control. Or even just a regular but untrained big dog. Most other animals that can be dangerous where I live are behind fences or noodling around in ponds out of the way and aren’t really a problem when left alone.

Are there any good TV series missing from my list?

Green Wing. Spaced. The Smoking Room. Blackadder. Absolutely Fabulous. Dead Pixels. Threesome (2011-2012). You already mentioned many my favourites, the best being The Vicar of Dibley and Red Dwarf!

What did people do on the bus before phones?

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I’ve always had some sort of music device to listen to, right back to the walkman lol! And when I was in college I was never without a book. I don’t tend to use my phone on the bus now, preferring to stare out of the window as if I’ve never seen the outside world before!

We have both locally, all of my time living here. Specifically called the Lolly Lady, and the Lollipop Man. As my kids got older they were allowed to call theirs by their name.

What was it like being a British teenager in the 1990s?

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I didn’t live in London, but I was young in the 90s. You weren’t anyone unless you’d seen Trainspotting. We did not carry drinks/water bottles. Uncool. I had several shell suits, my favourite being Reebok. Happy Mondays. Travel Fox trainers. Diamond White cider. I was not cool, or trendy, and my Mum did not get me at all. Posters on my walls from Smash Hits, Just 17, More. Driving around half the night and sitting in dark car parks with other car loads of teenagers blaring out Blur, Oasis, all that Britpop. Working our first jobs for £3 an hour. Didn’t date, absolutely horrified at the idea. Boys were a floppy haired mystery. Didn’t know I had awful anxiety because it wasn’t a thing back then. Struggled with everything.

What's the strangest thing you've seen your neighbours do?

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I used to live in a small block of flats, high enough to see into the neighbours gardens. I got up early for work during the week and opening the curtains I’d regularly spot the old gal in the house next door outside in her dressing gown, hair rollers, and garden shoes cutting the grass with a pair of regular kitchen scissors. Her lawn was hella neat and tidy, can’t deny it!

When did you delete the phone number of a deceased love one?

Posted by SheffDus@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 412 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

Never. Dad is still on my phone and WhatsApp so I can read our messages. And almost at the top of my messenger list as our chat is still there. He died in 2021 and until it’s all deleted by meta I plan on keeping that and his FB because people still post things to him in memory. Same for his Pinterest account. My Mum passed away not having any of those things so I will keep hold of Dads for as long as I can.

What foods were considered a luxury or treat and meant you were "on holiday" as a kid?

Aphr0dite19@reddit

Never had a holiday as a kid ( v v poor), but we did house sit for a dear old couple who had basically adopted my mum and I, and by extension so had their family. Lovely people. So when they were away for a week, we’d stay at their chocolate-box idyllic cottage in the countryside which I loved because they always had eggs (a real luxury!), and these amazing chocolate cupcakes in silver cases, possibly Fabulous Bakin’ Boys this was ‘82/‘83.Absolute top notch treat.

Memory unlocked! My Nan would bring Camp Coffee with her when she’d come and stay with us many, many years ago! She would only drink from a cup and saucer too so we had one especially. I thought she was posh, but she probably was just old fashioned.

As a kid, what weird concoctions did you use to make when there was nothing nice to eat in the cupboard?

What did a parent (or relative) do to ruin your wedding?

Posted by imfinewithastraw@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 415 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

Not strictly ruined but peed me off, even to this day despite now being divorced! Our photographer was a close family member of the groom, offered his (pretty good) amateur service free of charge on the day, we just paid for developing the pics (90’s!) and pay for and provide albums beforehand so they could organise them all for us. Lovely. Did not realise until delivery day of said albums that no photos had been taken of me with my mum, me with my family, or me/hubby and my family. Not one. Just that side of the family with hubby, a couple with me and them, and some random photos of my individual family members, just not with me. Absolutely stunned and gutted, especially when my mum pointed it out. I have little recollection of events as the day was so busy, but obviously mum blamed me. The photographer shrugged it off too. There are lots of beautiful shots of us, and the venue, which I was grateful for but I barely looked at the photos since then because it made me sad.

How do you feel about non-drivers?

Posted by DueLead666@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 620 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I don’t drive. The main reason being I was just no good at paying attention to everything all at once, and my instructor said to me please don’t get behind the wheel of a car. I sweat just thinking about it. I’m 51 now and people STILL ask me so have you thought about learning to drive? Wow, no never occurred to me /s. I know plenty of people who don’t drive, but someone else in their household does so they don’t get comments like I do. I stopped explaining myself a long time ago. You’ve made your peace with it, never mind other people’s opinions.

What wonderous and exotic foreign food were you introduced to as a kid thats just commonplace nowadays?

Aphr0dite19@reddit

Pasta. I think I was maybe 19/20 before I ever tried it. Mum thought it was lazy, bulk food and not ‘proper’ food. She cooked basic meals from scratch (all good, no complaint) but as an adult cooking for my family over the years I feel sad that she could have bought pasta meal ingredients for me and fed me very well on next to nothing.

What did you do for your 30th birthday?

Posted by Samsterman@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 510 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I had three children under five at age 30, and I was a bit of a yummy mummy back then and I wanted to go out-out! So they stayed home with their dad, and I went to stay with a family friend, got dressed up and we went nightclubbing til 2am, had cheesy chips on the night bus back to hers, and then watched a film til the sun was almost up. Went home to the fam next day just fine as I didn’t get hangovers back then! On my actual birthday we went on a road trip to the town where I was born to see where my parents worked, and see the hospital my Mum went into. Lovely day, we took a picnic.

I’ve always had decent skin. Mum assumed I’d inherit her rough, oily-pored skin but no I got lucky. I rarely had spots even in puberty, and no scars from the few I did have. I’m also very fertile and am able to conceive easily, and I’m extremely grateful having watched some of my closest friends struggle to become pregnant. On the flip side I am cursed with cankles. One is bigger than the other too. Thanks female ancestors!

Right now I’m slowly and gently wobbling my tragic body around the house after staying up til 2.30am dancing to party anthem videos on YouTube and downing a huge bottle of Lambrini all to myself. Telly, cheese and crackers, and later on gammon for dinner with the kids. It’s an ok day.

How are you celebrating New Years?

Front room, disco light, YouTube music videos (soundbar loud), dress up, picky bits, alcohol, BBC fireworks at midnight. More alcohol. It’s a lot of fun.

Do you just need to accept the will be noise from neighbours on New Years Eve?

Posted by Bounce_Bounce_Betty@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 29 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

Our house is very loud new years eve. I don’t go out but I still want to dress up, have fun, play loud music and watch the fireworks on BBC1. Luckily I’m on good terms with my neighbour and I always let her know and to text if it starts to grate on her nerves. My sound system is on the other side of a supporting wall which shields some of the noise.

My wife and I are poorly. Any Christmas suggestions?

Posted by iamtherarariot@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 31 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I’m sorry you’re both so poorly. Definitely been there and had to fight through it because three kids lol! But that’s not ideal, so don’t over do it. Hopefully you can FaceTime with the children you didn’t get to visit, can’t spread germs over WiFi! Maybe use something like Cahoot and do a Christmas themed quiz with them (or with their grown ups if they’re only little). Before kids I also spent a Christmas with a severe chest infection and my husband had to carry me to the sofa, we couldn’t even make dinner. So we had good soup, a little tipple in our hot honey and lemon, turned the lights down so it was just cosy fairy lights and watched box sets. We had a bigger celebration dinner with all the trimmings when I felt better, you could do that too. And have a day planned later just the two of you, it might not be christmassy but it’ll still be cold and crisp. Merry Christmas to you both 🎄

Polar Express on in the background whilst opening presents. Vicar of Dibley The Christmas Lunch Incident over dinner. Kings speech at 3pm. The Snowman/The Snowdog/Father Christmas in the afternoon. Adult son is autistic so we tend to follow a routine and the tv helps keep him from being overwhelmed. 🎄

Our very senior cat recently went over the rainbow bridge, however right up to that day she was able to eat and enjoy GoCat senior 7+ and she had very few teeth left bless her! Little shapes, not balls. Also dreamies are pillow shaped and went down well even with few teeth. 😺

I’m 51. My granddad died when I was 23 and pregnant with my son, I wasn’t well enough to fly out for his funeral. My nan died when I was 32, exactly 7 months after my mum died. I was still grieving for my mum and hadn’t realised my passport had lapsed so I couldn’t go to her funeral either.

Do you manually wipe the condensation each morning?

Posted by Desperate_Coffee_116@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 273 comments

Aphr0dite19@reddit

I balance having the windows open a tiny bit in the bathroom (the only room that struggles with condensation) with having the heating on at set periods. This seems to be pretty effective in preventing condensation anywhere else. The tumble dryer is in the utility room and theres a back door to the garden so that helps prevent condensation or damp in there.
