Lollipop men?

a) Of course it's available to men, there are plenty of lollipop men b) Why would call them "male lollipop ladies"? You don't call congresswomen "female congressmen", equally ridiculous c) Lad is a term associated with youth, the majority of lollipop men are retirees who just want to work a couple of hours a day or are part time school staff looking for a few extra quid or volunteering to keep kids from being killed on a busy street. We like things quaint or a bit whimsical but we're not living in Willy Wonkas chocolate factory singing songs and doing little dances throughout the day. We can live with referrring to a lollipop-shaped sign as a lollipop without having to make forced alliteration happen to make it through to tea time And for what it's worth, our lollipop man at high school used to sell cigarettes to the students so whatever Mary Poppins image you have in your head about them, it's really just a silly name for the sign they hold, they're just regular people who choose to walk out into oncoming traffic to help more vulnerable people to cross
