Whenever I see these threads pop up, people often say their dealers accept bank transfer. Those dealers are very stupid and the people paying are also stupid for going with it. Known quite a few people end up inside for that.
I dated a guy whose stepdad was a financial crimes officer or something of the sort. It’s very obvious when this is being done, especially when (this happens all too often) references are used such as “totally not weed” and “drugs”
This guy was also my source of weed for a few years
I've never known a personal use buyer go inside, but have known few dealers do and it's always the *dumbest* mistake conceivable. One absolute chestnut muddled numbers and sent drug ads to his vet.
Drug control is class warfare.
There is a peremptory medical case - made by [The Lancet](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(10)61462-6/abstract) \- that cannabis, psychedelics, and cocaine are no more harmful than tobacco, and significantly *less* harmful (overall) than alcohol.
I grew up in a rural Lincolnshire town. Drugs are rife there. A few of the people I grew up with got into it pretty bad. Some were dealing (3 of which ended up in prison) and a couple of them are sadly no longer with us.
I stopped using/scoring regularly about a year ago but none of my guys would ever take anything other than cash money. I don't know who's going down the contactless route, but it definitely never happened around my way!
I used to have a pub right near the town centre, its mad how many young lads suddenly remember they need £40/£50 cashback around last orders time just before they hit the clubs on a friday night. I didn't mind tho tbh, the less cash on my premises at the end of the night the better.
Donations at church and at my addiction recovery support group. Though we are looking at getting a contactless payment thing soon. Donations to homeless people.
Most day to day spending. I only use my card for larger transactions. Pub, cash. Couple of bits from the shop, cash. Takeaway, cash. Haircut, cash. Filling the car, card. Big Costco shop, card. Shop doesn't take cash, go somewhere else.
I still take £100 cash out every payday (I get paid weekly) and use it for everyday spending. Anything that's left at the end of the week goes in a money pot. Then I open it up around Christmas time and use it for booze.
I don’t take cash out like you but I still use it for everyday spending. That and bigger cost items where a cash amount isn’t ideal but those are usually online purchases these days.
I honestly couldn’t tell you
I don’t think I’ve used physical money since I had my house painted nearly three years ago, possibly there’s been something I’ve used a fiver for but nothing regular.
I’ve had no need for it
An Indian takeaway near me does a ludicrously cheap deal - curry + rice or naan + onion bhajis + Bombay or saag aloo for £12, but only if you pay cash.
That's the only thing I've used cash for in years.
I am convinced mine has shares in the company that makes cash machines that you pay for in rural corner shops. It's the only place to get cash within a two mile radius and it's conveniently next door to my cash-only Chinese.
Apparently they take cheques too, might be worth asking just for the novelty of it.
Worked as a delivery driver for a Chinese takeaway about 20 years ago, so before just eat etc. Always cash and last delivery of the night was the boss to the casino 😁
Books. I like trawling charity shops for them and whilst many allow for cards, quite a few still don't so if I'm in a book hunting mood I always opt for cash instead.
I'll only pay cash if I can especially in Asian boss man shops. Don't trust paying with a card incase there is some sort of skimming going on. If cash goes we are fucked, living in a dystopian open prison.
Everything I can! I budget with cash because once it’s out it’s out. I take cash out each month for:
\- all groceries
\-petrol
\-hair cuts
\-beauty treatments
\- all fun money (nights out/dinner out)
\- take away fund
Basically anything we spend that isn’t bills and direct debits!
As a result, I haven’t went over budget since I started doing it this way, not by a penny, and have saved THOUSANDS into high interest accounts that I wasn’t saving before when I was tap tap tapping that contactless!
Everything I can. Use it or lose it.
Many establishments have realised that cards and banks will take a cut of their hard earned profits for doing very little.
Probably the odd little things like a barber, market stall, or anywhere that charges a card minimum. There’s still something satisfying about handing over a note and getting change back instead of tapping everything on a phone.
The chip shop. I watched their card problems before they got rid of it. Most cash only shops are attempting to pay less tax. I don't carry cash. It is an invitation to crackhead muggers.
Barber, but that is mainly just a habit and to use up cash I have lying around. He used to be cash only but now takes cards.
Don't even bother having cash in the car for car parks now.
M'lud appears to not to have considered that the recipients of such payments can arrange their banking so that a neutral and unincriminanating name appears on the payer's statement.
This would minimise the chance of domestic ructions. I'm sure m'lud would wish to avoid any such events.
Of course, if the payments to the neutrally named recipient were of such size or frequency to attract atention, m'lud may find himself banished to sleeping in the stables.
Yeah I really can't imagine explaining those card transactions to any of my three wives. It's already hard enough stopping them finding out about each other.
I maintain a strict "Cash for Gash" protocol for a reason.
Taxis - they take card, but they grumble about it.
Beer tents and food stalls at outdoor events. About 80% will take card, but you need to have cash in case they're one of the 20%, and if you've withdrawn cash I'd rather spend it than have cash I won't spend sitting around for perhaps another month,
Splitting cost with friends or repaying friends - so for example an organisation a friend was involved in was doing a raffle, I said to him to get me tickets, then the next time I saw him I gave him the cash.
There’s an independent coffee shop near me where I always pay in cash because I sort of know the owner and she was saying how much she had to pay in fees to take card payments so I figure I pay in cash (no real inconvenience to me), she gets to keep more of it, the shop stays open longer and I don’t have to go get shit overpriced coffee from one of the major chains.
I select things I want - from shops and suchlike. The proprietor, or a member of staff, then requests financial compensation for these goods and I in return hand over promissory notes to the value of that. Where the amount is not exact they then give me the difference in a combination of notes and coins. I then leave the establishment and head about the rest of my business for the day.
Festivals and conventions, especially the outdoors ones. I do carry my card but always helpful to have cash with you. That many people crowded in the space of a field or two, internet signal can get jinky really quickly, so a couple minute transaction can easily turn into a 15 minute transaction whilst you both desperately try and get the card machine to work.
To ease something in some form but I'd at least rather it went to a local small business (which will stay pay tax in various other ways) than a large tax dodging company like Amazon. I know which one I feel is doing it more ethically whatever the law says.
I could not agree more. It's a shame we don't really have local banks anymore, I'd happily have an account with a card that only works with local businesses. I do appreciate that this is wildly impractical though.
My local town is over served by barbers just like everywhere is, I've used most of them once. The one that gets my repeat custom is the one that didn't ask me to pay with cash the first time I went in.
There is a small independent Japanese near us who only takes cash. They rarely increase prices and the food is amazing. I'm willing to accept they are tax dodging to keep the business open when everything going on is putting so much pressure on independents to close.
People keep saying about tax dodging but I have never had a full and satisfactory breakdown of how they actually do it. Not in any systematic way anyway, the Chinese probably takes a wad of cash out of the till which goes down the cash and carry or into wages. The money doesn't touch the sides and avoids the tax on that, but it is not a sinister way to get rich, it is just easier. Probably run by some old couple who have always done it that way. They'd probably get richer if they took card and therefore expanded their customer base.
I like paying cash as much as possible for small things, helps keep a track of spending and I don't have fifty transactions on my card for a single drink or whatever.
To settle up small things with my friends after one of us has paid for a round of drinks or a couple of coffees (we’re all impoverished mothers of ravening teens, we can’t afford to buy rounds any more.
I think we’ve been passing the same couple of tenners between us for at least a year
There are apps that you can plug in bills and who paid for what in groups, it then works out who owes who at the end. Can then do a simple transfer or paypal. Problem with cash for that kind of thing is people need change.
I’m aware of that and use it with different groups of friends (Splitwise is the devil)
For this group of friends, cash works better. For other groups, PayPal is fine. I was simply answering the question posed by the OP
Just about the only thing I still use cash for is tipping. Other than that, I think I've paid for a ticket in a car park that didn't have app based parking due to being in the middle of nowhere.
Tips and a pint at my local. It's not a chain of pubs like the rest of them, and a lot of the staff who work there live in the pub so I'd rather they get cash.
Taxis, takeaways, cafes, hairdresser, all the smaller businesses we buy from, electricians/painters/joiners etc (jobs in the home), any physical shop we go into.
The only time I have cash is when I visit my parents and they give me petrol money.
I'm a pay at the pump purist, so I usually just use it for my weekly food shop.
The cafe at the end of our local 4 mile dog walk.
The cafe we go to during the cold/wet months after parkrun. These guys prefer cash, but as a cup of tea is £1.50 it seems a waste for them to have the card fees.
I’ve got a cleaner who comes every fortnight.
£50 in an envelope on a table. Later that evening I come home and, as if by magic, the place is spotless.
I keep a £1 coin in my swimming bag for the locker. But I get it back so I'm not really paying for anything... The kids sometimes need cash for the stalls at the school fair.
Anything and everything.
While i do use my card, i often still pay cash. I just prefer it. Easier to budget and control spending - im not a big spender anyway, but it helps.
I usually keep a few quid change so that if there’s a little toy my toddler wants (eg hot wheels car or some bubbles) or I’ve said we can buy a pack of buns/biscuits to share with people, she can got up to the till and pay for them. She usually tries to keep the money and needs reminding to hand it over.
Thats a good point...i was once short £2 because the price had gone up, so i said i would just buy something small and add the £2 on the card ... not doing that again
For what it's worth, it's impossible to skim a contactless transaction as your card number is never transmitted, so they're safe to use in questionable places
Yea Chinese places all have the "cash only" signs locally, with no Just eat etc
Indian places have a 10% off on another app to cut out justeat.
Lots of companies skimming off the top so places are trying to fight back.
I never use just eat. We actually have a bit of a game at home where I'll go collect an Indian (or order one of I've had a few) and then my girlfriend prices it up on just eat and I have to guess how much more it would have been. I've got quite good at it now I've figured out the percentages but there are often some curve balls with random prices they add to certain dishes on the site.
A raffle at a school fete maybe...? I rarely have cash and am lost when I need to use it really these days. It is a right pain to have to go to a cash point as there seems to be less of them, understandably.
Everything, as far as remotely practicable. Cash is king. Whatever your thoughts about the autocracy of the *current* government (I am a big Palestine fan so know better than to screw around...), the downsides of purely digital currency are so extreme it should not be built. "If there's even a 1% chance..." type of logic.
Also, I don't care if local businesses want to avoid tax. Major corporations avoid tax. Nobility avoids tax. Landlords avoid tax. So if Mr and Mrs Pilates or Boss Man at Kebab Palace want to avoid tax too, that's between them and God.
One point I would make is always have a few hundred in the house in case the ATMs go down. The undersea internet cables are incredibly vulnerable. And before the experts jump in and say redundancies are built into the system look what happened in Spain.
I do the same. Take some cash out at the start of the week and use it for everyday spending. I'm not even that old (35) and still feel like a tit buying a pint on card. Plus I know the landlord at my local appreciates the cash.
Eggs from the farm gate, chestnuts from the chestnut stall around Xmas, tips, giving to homeless people. And drugs (to ruin the wholesome vibe of the previous items).
Antiques, ‘junk’, books, things in charity shops.
I prefer using cash to buy a pint, but I tried proffering a purple to a barman in London a year or so back and he appeared to suffer an embolism of such severity that took him a few minutes to recover in order to bring me such change as there was.
Market stalls; black cabs. There is still one takeaway near me which doesn't like customers to use cards, although they'll get the machine out if they really have to.
The funfair came to our local park last weekend. They accepted card payments but had stern notices saying “CASH PREFERRED” and I happened to have have some cash (rare) so it was thoroughly rinsed from me by my child
I moved years ago from cash to card then from card to phone. Cash these days feels a distant memory unless I'm abroad - still tend to take local currency on holiday.
Only businesses I know that don't take cards in my area of central London are a couple of older fish & chip shops and stalls at the car boot type markets.
Oh, and the coin for the supermarket trolley.
I had to use it for a weekly bus pass, on the bus, in Manchester last week. For some bizarre reason, they won't take cards for that.
That's the first time I've used cash for literally anything for about two years.
