Please. My wife has her doctorate in law, and we've got friends who went through med school. None of us deserve half a million dollars a year to compensate for an extra few years of tough school. We absolutely don't deserve 15x the salary of my friend who's a teacher. Our country has its priorities so goddamn wrong.

Sent my wife to buy thermal paste and the best buy employee gave her a long, unsolicited lecture about how she should be changing the thermal paste on her components every 6 months... Really, every 6 months? [Thermal paste questions]

I usually do it when I give away my previous build to a friend or family member. About half the time it makes a significant difference. One time it took CPU temp from 88 to 74. That one was a "quiet" case with terrible airflow that had probably been cooking that thermal paste for 6-7 years.

I mean, there are some cars where it's implemented poorly. I don't use it on my car because it shuts off at nonsensical times (since the car can't read my mind). For example, every time I reach a destination, like my garage, work, store, gas station, etc, it shuts the engine off immediately when the car stops moving, then instantly starts it again when I shift into Park, then shuts it off again when I take the key out. Braindead programming.

I doubt it's the CPU itself. Could be you left the plastic on like the other commenter said. Otherwise, I think you should try the various things I outlined above. Those are the steps I would take to diagnose this if I was in your position.

100% your CPU is overheating and thermal throttling. That means it reduces its own performance to save itself from damage. You need to do whatever it takes to get your CPU temp down around 80-85°C **at most**. 80 or below is better, because you don't want the difference between overheating or not to be a hot or cold day in your house. Either your cooler is failing (or its fan(s)), your thermal paste is failing or improperly applied, or your case doesn't have enough airflow moving through it. First, make sure the fan on the CPU cooler is spinning fast when you're trying to play battlefield. If not, check your BIOS and change your CPU fan speed/curve. If it's not spinning at all, though, that's probably the culprit, and it's easy to unclip a CPU fan and replace it. You could run a GPU benchmark like Unigen Superposition, to stress your GPU to 100% for a while and make sure that doesn't overheat. Then at least you'd be pretty sure your case airflow is OK. From there, I'd say you need to remove your CPU cooler, redo the paste if it looks dried or not making good contact, but if the paste seems OK, you might need to replace your CPU cooler itself. Good luck.

DIM: 1440p gaming (over 1080p)

Posted by PasonJatrick@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 100 comments

withoutapaddle@reddit

I've definitely been tempted by ultrawide in the past, but I've seen so many people complaining or looking for advice to get so many games to work properly in ultrawide. That keeps me away. It's the same reason I own common cars. I want to be the top of the bell curve as far as market demographic, so my experience is the one developers are most likely to target. So every time I work on one of my cars, I find 8 different youtube videos showing me exactly how to do the thing I'm trying to do, and 3-5 reputable sources for buying the parts.

DIM: 1440p gaming (over 1080p)

withoutapaddle@reddit

Yes, I personally find the difference between 1080p and 1440p more enjoyable than the difference between 1440p and 4K. I use a 800p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K display all almost every day. 4K is great, but it rarely feels "worth it" when I think about how much better my performance could be changing only resolution. I'd actually prefer to play a game at 3-3.5K supersampling on a 1440p screen to create an incredible sharp image rather than the opposite and use DLSS to upscale a 1200-1440p image to make an iffy 4K finale output.

Did you try changing your case/fan situation? There is a massive difference between different cases and how well they let things cool. I have a 4000D Airflow, and it lets me keep a 4080 cool with very low fan speeds, because the case itself is so free flowing. My previous case just choked airflow. I'm never going back to cases that put looks above airflow. Now that we don't need floppy or optical disk drives on the front, I like a case that is 3 fans on front, and then one big 140mm in the rear. Keeps positive pressure and lets you run then slow/quiet while still pushing a lot of fresh air through the case.

Oh, well 83 and "above 70" are very different things, IMO. I would say 80 isn't that big of a deal, but 83 is right around where I try to find ways to improve my cooling or reduce load.

How should I upgrade my pc? Here are my details:

Posted by Norfov@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 5 comments

withoutapaddle@reddit

It sounds like you're happy at 60fps and 1080p, and as new games come out, you'll probably notice the GPU being the part that won't allow max graphics settings. So, I'd say upgrade your GPU, but I don't know if now is necessarily the best time. If you're not ALREADY dissatisfied with having to lower graphics settings on current games, then don't worry about it. Instead, I would put the money aside and add to it a little here an there so you have a $800-900 budget in a year or so, and can reevaluate then.

Fair, but also kind of a non-issue. In my experience, the batteries last for years. Most people would only change the batteries in their garage door opener one time during the entire time they own a car.

Yeah, we have 356A, and it's fun AF. Of course it's slow and handles poorly compared to a car 50+ years newer, but honestly, if you put modern tire widths and ultra-high-performance compound on it, it would at least handle amazingly (but kind of silly with less than 100hp). Classic sports cars are fun at low speeds. That's what most people who just look at numbers on the internet and watch car videos don't really understand. Slow car fast is better than fast car slow. Unless you're on a track, you cannot push a modern sportscar to 9/10th, but you can do that with a classic on back country roads.

For real. I kinda hate Nvidia. I buy AMD CPUs and GPUs for all my builds...except the ones for higher-end gaming. DLSS these days is actually good enough that a graphics whore like myself will play below native resolution and almost completely not notice it at all. (TBF, I never use below DLSS "Quality", but it still gives a significant performance improvement.)

At what GPU tier does X3D become worth getting for 1440p?

Posted by CsrRoli@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 128 comments

withoutapaddle@reddit

Honestly, a good rule of thumb is to assume games that feel like they are "simulating" a lot of systems at once will usually benefit from an overkill or x3D CPU. Flight sims, management sims, grand strategy, factory-type games, milsims, etc. If a game is pretty but relatively shallow and doesn't feel like it has an insane amount of things being kept track of at all times, it's probably not going to benefit as much from a very powerful or x3D CPU.

Older VRR still had problems too. I had one of the early monitors with the actual hardware Gsync chip inside it. It would flicker and strobe during moments when the framerate changed too quickly. It actually made Gsync annoying to use in any game that didn't have very stables framerates. Glad I ditched the monitor finally. I paid almost $600 for that monitor back in the day, and now I paid $199 for a replacement that is must better contrast, faster (180hz vs 144hz), and much larger (32"). Now I can keep this giant monitor at the back of my desk, gain lots of usable space, and still lean back in my chair and feel immersed when gaming.
