Just test drove the Ioniq 5N.

I own a mechanic shop. I’ve owned over 35 cars. I’ve driven cars with 700+hp.
This is the most fun I’ve ever had in a car. Period.
StrongOnline007@reddit
I'd probably own one if not for the ICCU failures. I follow some of the Facebook owners pages and every week a new person is getting theirs towed to the dealer
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
I see the same and have a regular AWD Ioniq. If they could swap it in a few days I wouldn’t sweat it. The problem I have is parts can be hit or miss on availability.
steviiee@reddit
My most recent ICCU swap took 5 days. Was pretty shocked lol
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
That’s not bad.
Recoil42@reddit
Long wait times is what I'm hearing. Some owners at r/electricvehicles have reported having their cars in the shop for well over a month.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that would piss me off.
Roonil-B_Wazlib@reddit
I’d love that as long as there was a decent loaner. Great time to road trip and rack up the miles on someone else’s car.
eh_itzvictor@reddit
Most loaners cant leave the state for insurance reasons.
Nintenderloin64@reddit
That has not been my experience, but it’s a good line to tell customers when you don’t want them to road trip in your loaners.
eh_itzvictor@reddit
Weird! I imagine its probably a dealer policy, but none of the dealers with the various loaners ive had have allowed me to travel out of the state. Though.. Florida is quite large, and most people (like me) life further south.
TheAlphaCarb0n@reddit
Except the fact that you probably now have to pay for gas during a price surge. Extra annoying
UnknownColorHat@reddit
In my case, the dealership has reimbursed me for gas when they give me an ICE loaner when my EV is in the shop. Keep your receipts and see if they go for it.
TheAlphaCarb0n@reddit
Porsche? I stand to be corrected but would be absolutely shocked if Hyundai did that
localtuned@reddit
Mine was 3 weeks. After a year of ownership. They gave me a branded new Elantra for a rental.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
At least you got a rental!
primetimecsu@reddit
for every one of those posts, theres dozens that have no issue.
the iccu issue is estimated between 2-10% of vehicles across hyundai/kia. They are selling 100s of thousands of EVs a year.
QuiickLime@reddit
The ICCU issue and their lack of willingness to solve it is one of the most Hyundai things ever.
They have 99% of a great product, but make a major mistake and refuse to resolve it properly. Same thing with the whole "kia boys" lack of immobilizer - should have been an immediate free recall to upgrade them all to add an immobilizer chip (or maybe they shouldn't have sold a car without one in the future). The Theta 2 engine problems are similar in my mind.
Until they can sell vehicles for 10 years without some major flub, I don't trust their vehicles enough to spend money on them.
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
I'm just here loving my Veloster N after my Genesis 3.8 R-Spec with zero issues on either car after many miles of hard driving
Raptor01@reddit
I have a Kia EV6 with the same ICCU. Just got a letter in the mail stating that the warranty for the ICCU has been extended to 15 years or 180,000 miles. Everyone is getting the same letter. So, considering that car has been absolutely bulletproof for the last 80,000 miles, I'm happy with it.
QuiickLime@reddit
I'm glad you're happy with it.
Personally I would be unhappy that they are simply extending the warranty and not issuing a recall to replace with a newly designed part. Especially because many people have had theirs fixed under warranty, but had to wait weeks or months for the dealer to get the part in stock.
Raptor01@reddit
It's a tradeoff. Maybe the ICCU will go out and I will have to get it replaced under warranty. On the other hand, I never have to take it in for anything else, I never have to do oil changes, I will likely never have to replace the brake pads (they're still at 80% after 80k miles), I never have to go to a gas station, I get effective gas mileage better than a Prius with the acceleration of a Mustang GT, etc. It's an extremely reliable car except for the ICCU issue. Much more reliable than anything I've had since 1987 and I've had all the major brands aside from Chevrolet.
So, I can be upset that they're putting a bandaid on the biggest issue with the car. But at least they're actually doing something about it. Most other cars have glaring issues that don't get covered out of the regular warranty and then they have "regular maintenance" that I don't have to worry about.
QuiickLime@reddit
How many of those advantages are Hyundai/Kia specific though? They all seem like general EV advantages, most of which don't have ICCU problems.
Comparing the ICCU issue to ICE engine maintenance/reliability doesn't make sense IMO.
Raptor01@reddit
I mean, it's a part that tends to break. ICE cars also have parts that break. Granted, it's an important part, but its not like ICE cars don't have important parts. So, yeah, you can compare them very easily.
You go on any forum for any car model and you'll easily see a slew of problems that crop up. For the vast majority of cars, it's a bunch of different things. For the EV6 (and most likely the Ionic 5), it's only the iccu. You rarely hear about anything else. Go onto other EV forums and it's not the same (especially Tesla). So no, it's not that all EV's are ultra reliable. It's logical that they're more reliable than a normal ICE car, but that's another discussion.
All I have to say is that I've driven this car for 80,000 miles and I had to take it to the dealership TWO times and one of those times was a recall appointment. I don't even bother taking it in to the scheduled maintenance because that's just a money grab for most of it. Have you ever had a car like that?
QuiickLime@reddit
I only buy used wagons. See you on r/carscirclejerk
apocbane@reddit
I love my 5n and everyone I give a ride smiles. It's a missle in a straight line.
National_Listen_3135@reddit
no way..companies have to be flawless minimum 30 years before I consider them

Don’t forget the palisade whose seat crushed a kid to death bc they couldn’t be bothers to engineer a simple safety system
QuiickLime@reddit
I thought about adding it, especially because multiple people were injured BEFORE the death - and it would be so tragic to be in that position, but they did issue a stop sale and it seems like they will properly remedy the issue. We'll see.
GabtsbyForaDay@reddit
Not to mention in cali insurers charge more ass korean cars are stolen more than others
WhipTheLlama@reddit
100% agreed. The cars are mechanical slop, and they don't stand behind their products well enough. Hyundai is a company at their peak, but still haven't solved basic reliability and service issues, which is going to seriously bite them once that reputation filters throughout the population more.
I think that Nissan's multi-decade CVT issues killed them, and Hyundai is fast-approaching the same reputation.
PuzzleheadedCarry480@reddit
I loved my ‘13 Santa Fe sport…until the oil pan cap failed catastrophically and seized the engine. They replaced the engine entirely for free!…over the course of seven months…then they had disconnected the turbo, which required another repair, then it was one thing after another every 90 days until I finally *gave* the bitch to a family member who needed a car.
I like the new Hyundais but never again will I own one.
alien_believer_42@reddit
Are they ever going to fix this? We have an Ioniq5 but I'd love a 5N
StrongOnline007@reddit
My guess is no because they extended the warranty on the ICCU for 15 years — to me this says they're just going to replace as needed. Nice to have the warranty in theory but in reality being 1) stranded randomly and 2) out of your normal car for a week or weeks or months and 3) having to deal with Hyundai service really sucks
icona_@reddit
if they're basically accepting that they'll have to replace it (maybe multiple times) why don't they just replace it now, instead of waiting for you to randomly break down on the road??
StrongOnline007@reddit
Because the replacement also breaks. They haven't actually solved the problem
withoutapaddle@reddit
But you get your choice of toppings!
HoldingForGenova@reddit
FWIW when I had a BMW with an N54 engine, the solution was both a replacement part, and an extended warranty on the engine. The replacement part was solid and I'd never heard of anyone having any subsequent issues but the warranty added peace of mind.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Service really is my biggest concern as well
Hyundai got their start as a company that would finance to someone with a 550 credit score and they still treat customers like they have a 550 credit score even now that they’re selling expensive cars
FledglingNonCon@reddit
It's one of the great mysteries. It's been an issue since the 2022 model year. When there's an issue this big it rarely takes this long to fix. Very few other automakers are having similar issues, so it's not anything unique to EVs. It's kind of mind-boggling.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Eventually! lol
billythygoat@reddit
My friends brother had it happen twice in the last 1.5 years.
fortheophilus@reddit
Had an ev6 gt that I loved but the iccu went out. They put me in a base Kia rio for four months. Four months.
ikilledtupac@reddit
Sounds like my POS Lucid
Due-Combination7924@reddit
POS lucid?.. please explain.
ikilledtupac@reddit
It’s a huge piece of shit, full of software bugs and build quality issues, horrific service times. Gone almost three months now. That company is in shambles.
Due-Combination7924@reddit
Crazy how everything you watch or read on Lucid is so positive and doesn't reflect that reality. Even most you-tubers just glaze because "its not tesla".
bagNtagEm@reddit
Check out the engineering explained video on his... It was comprehensive and not kind.
Kamukix@reddit
Definitely at one point it was like that to me too, but I've seen a few things that made me take a big pause and wonder about it a lot more. The most recent example I can easily think of is the Engineering Explained YouTube video, his ownership experience is a rough one to watch...especially since the car was new, and the issues had already been around in older models, so it's not just new car gremlins to sort out.
ikilledtupac@reddit
Their stock price says it all. Down like 95%. They’re dead. That’s the reality.
Kamukix@reddit
Please elaborate...
ikilledtupac@reddit
It’s a huge piece of shit, full of software bugs and build quality issues, horrific service times. Gone almost three months now. That company is in shambles.
Kamukix@reddit
Fuck, I'm sorry to hear that. I've only had one experience with a Lucid so far, and I've been curious to hear what other people have experienced.
Snoo93079@reddit
If lucid software matched their hardware they'd be amazing cars
esbowman@reddit
This is blown way out of proportion imo. It’s like 1% of owners, but people like to complain online rather than praise. I’ve spoken to my local service dept and they said they’ve seen one customer come in for a replacement and it was found defective within the first thousand miles. I own an AWD 2022 model and have had zero issues. Only thing I had to replace was the 12v battery, and tires.
I also thought I had read that the N does not have the same iccu and is not affected. Not 100% sure though.
Milksaucey@reddit
Eh, I've leased one for the last two years and haven't had a problem and I think the outrage is in proportion to how Hyundai has handled the issue. They only recently extended the warranty of the ICCU when they almost certainly have known for years that the part is faulty. Hyundai service sucks and any potential to have to interact with it is a massive negative.
They had backorders of the ICCU while selling new models with the ICCU. They release new models with the same ICCU. How is this acceptable to you?
apocbane@reddit
Same, I leased due to the ICCU issue being a possibility, I'm closer to buying it out though. Great car factory tires/wheels are dumb. The dealer wasn't great and can see how people don't want to deal with them. 5n is great fun
esbowman@reddit
The new models literally have updated ICCUs. 2025+ and beyond are updated.
I won't argue though, they should have put out a large recall on the older ICCUs and got ahead of it.
GeoffKingOfBiscuits@reddit
That 1% isn't verified and anecdotal but everyone I know with an Ioniq has had the ICCU pop. I also bought one anyway last week but I work from home so I can deal with it if I'm without for a while and I have the 10yr Warranty as first owner.
StrongOnline007@reddit
It does have the same ICCU, is affected, and the issue is not blown out of proportion. 1% of owners has not been independently verified. Happy yours has not had the problem though
esbowman@reddit
The 2025 and N series have a different part number for the ICCU than past generations. Hyundai improved the ICCU for all 2025+ models, and had to due to the larger batteries. Look it up.
StrongOnline007@reddit
Failure rate is not improved
GlintingFoghorn@reddit
A few months ago it did seem like the 5N wasn't going to be as affected but it feels like the last few months have had an increased number of ICCU failures, maybe it was just time in catching up because of the much lower number of 5Ns.
analyticaljoe@reddit
On the other hand, Hyundai has extended the warranty on this part to 15 years and 180,000 miles.
lowstrife@reddit
At least there is now an official warranty extension, 180k miles or 15 years.
Main_Hornet8676@reddit
These cars get near universal praise but no one ever buys them. I've seen more Zs than Ioniq 5 Ns on the road.
KSoMA@reddit
Niche (performance car) of a niche (EV). And unlike the Tesla Performance models, there's a significant price and range gap between the I5N and the standard/LR Ioniq 5.
Sarniezz@reddit
It gets old after a few hours honestly. Funniest cars make noises, real noises. And smellz.
xlb250@reddit
Probably because the main purpose of a CUV is to commute and haul people/stuff around.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
You can’t even get them, my local dealer has had 2 and never when I’m there.
Carolina_Hurricane@reddit
Except the cornering capability what does that thing weigh 5,000 lb? I followed one through some mountain twisties in my M340i and I repeatedly let it get ahead a couple hundred feet before closing the gap within seconds.
He was trying to race it was impressive on straight stretches but the weight was just too much.
stainedhat@reddit
There is a lot of hate in car culture for EVs. The problem is most people that hate them haven't driven them. Once you realize how fun they are it's hard to hate on them. However, there is still something special about driving a rowdy ICE vehicle. They both have their place. They're both fun. Glad you enjoyed the 5N!
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Eh disagree. The problem is a lot of EVs aren’t fun (to their credit most cars in general aren’t fun) and that reputation draws attention away from the truly good ones like the 5N
ArcticBP@reddit
No the problem is that we’ve got a bunch of people gorging on propaganda.
Places like here are dominated by bad faith arguments & truck owners talking about “soul”:
-EVs are bad because you need more than acceleration and saving on gas, but automatics are great because the tech has improved so now you can accelerate quicker and save on gas.
-EVs are too heavy, but there’s nothing wrong with using a truck to commute to the office
-EVs are bad because they have no soul unlike the world’s most passionate & soulful vehicle - a Chevy Silverado 2500
Etc., etc.
Hell, the study posted here showing improved air quality in regions with higher EV adoption had to get locked and one of the most downvoted comments was someone saying that clean air was a good thing.
EVs aren’t perfect and they aren’t the solution for everyone, but I honestly think half the posters in the sub would burst into flames if they found out that the phone they’re reading this on has a battery.

Why are you assuming the people who complain about EV weight are the same people driving heavy trucks? That makes no sense
I drive a 3200 lb compact hatchback. I chose it because no matter how fast a car is, you can’t make up for weight in a corner
AltruisticMobile4606@reddit
For me the weight really is the only thing I need to be solved. Once battery tech has a substantial improvement, however far off that may be, I’ll be ready to make the switch
HoldingForGenova@reddit
I'm not the person you're replying to, but in my day to day life, the Venn diagram of people who hate EVs and the people who drive pavement princess trucks is a circle.
Current_Department73@reddit
Uh that’s kind of the point, I don’t want my car and phone to run on the same technology
xlb250@reddit

Previous_Platform718@reddit
This sub doesn't like trucks that much. This sub tends to like sports cars. Your examples are all things like,
but that's not the typical way people on r/cars talk about things. Replace the Silverado with a Miata and you'll immediately understand the argument people are making.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
I’m not a huge fan of EVs but the 5N was great because it was the closest to being a regular car. All I want is to be able to shift gears. I don’t care if it’s a gimmick. It is keeping the ability to drive a manual or have a transmission alive. I love the idea of it.
People are just sour pusses because “it’s not a real transmission.” I. Don’t. Give. A. Fuck. I’m a die-hard manual guy. I’ve only owned manual cars for 20 years. I love manual trannies. I want to control changing gears in some capacity and that lets me.
blabus@reddit
That's great for you, but it's not going to stop people from rightfully thinking that an artificial simulation of a gearbox and engine exhaust are anything more than cheap gimmicks. At that point I'd rather invest in a really good driving simulator.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
Okay 👍
People just love to complain.
Kamukix@reddit
Same, I want MORE cars to have that kinda thing. For me that also includes them doing a simulated manual gearbox with a clutch pedal too.
Some people say that's a stupid gimmick, and it's just a driving simulator....except that it is still real driving, but with huge personality options. Also, driving simulators are awesome so I don't see a problem haha.
Give me an ICE car with a manual, and an EV with some silly modes, that's a great combination. 👌
The_Spectacle@reddit
aren't they fast as hell off the line?
I don't have anything against EVs, I just keep saying I’m not ready for the change just yet
f1racer328@reddit
Instant torque. My Rivian will beat most cars from a standstill, however my M2 is way more fun on a twisty road or track. Both still make me smile, but daily driving an EV is superior than gas, IF you can charge at home or work.
hurricanePopsicles@reddit
These Ioniq 5N can hold their own. We had 2 come out to autocross and one came in 3rd place overall on OEM tires
narcistic_asshole@reddit
I think the fear of someday not having a choice beyond EV is underlying issue for a lot of EV haters. I get it to an extent, though I also think ICE vehicles will love on for awhile in a similar manner as the manual transmission does now, where it still lives on, but only in enthusiast cars for people that want it.
IMO hybrids have kinda given the combustion engine new life. If we hit a point where 60% of the vehicles on the road are EV, 35% are hybrid and 5% are ICE we'll see a point where gas stations are still available in some capacity, less environmental pressure to kill off the ICE vehicle, and there'll be just enough interest for ICE car enthusiasts for OEMs to continue to cater to the demographic
onlyranchmefries@reddit
A majority of my vehicles have been modified for straight line speed and I still enjoy ICE over EV. Something about the nuanced power delivery and the sound and vibrations plays a big role as well.
It also helps that I built them all myself. EVs will get there eventually but the current aftermarket for EVs is basically none.
TheProwlerMech@reddit
Exactly! I decided to ignore the whole ICCU thing and bought an EV6 GT a few months back. This thing is violent in all the best ways possible. I love it. I miss the exhaust note but, come on, if I miss it too much I'll go buy a used Maserati that is allowed to be broken.
Kamukix@reddit
This is the way! Having both things just makes you love the other one more, I used to tell my best friend that all the time. He eventually listened to me (it wasn't an EV thing at the time, just a Miata only daily thing), and he was much much happier having options.
Tool for the job 👌

I thought it would be a gimmick. It isn’t. It’s visceral.
lowstrife@reddit
Now just imagine this tech, except with a rolodex of engines you can choose from instead of some boring .wav file of a 4 banger Elantra engine.
And then imagine the EV simulates the power and torque curves of whatever motor you've selected.
Today you're driving a big turbo 2JZ. Tomorrow it's a NA flat 6. Saturday its a v12.
Colorful_Monk_3467@reddit

Don't forget simulating the gear shifts of the different types of transmission! An IRL sim racing rig is basically end-game for an enthusiast focused EV.

DupassNickel@reddit
that's the exact dual life dream -- a built 350z for when you want to feel every explosion through the chassis, and the 5N for when you want to just destroy people's expectations. respect that setup honestly
chadwicke619@reddit
I mean, either you and I have a very different idea of what makes driving a car fun, or you haven’t driven very many fun cars. A $65K two-ton EV that pretends to shift, where my only real input is pressing the accelerator, doesn’t sound at all like my idea of fun. I’m very glad that people love their EVs though.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
You control the paddle shifts, it bounces off the “rev” limiter. I am 100% all for a manual sports car. However, the 5N was just ridiculous in all the right ways.
chadwicke619@reddit
Yep, I totally get it. Again, though, I would just repeat my original comment. I’m not trying to emasculate you or anything - if the 5N is the funnest thing you’ve ever driven, I’m pumped for you. Still, if that car is your idea of the funnest driving experience a person can have, we enjoy driving for totally different reasons.
chadwicke619@reddit

I was a mechanic for many years. Owned mustangs and motorcycles, and have driven many more including Porsches, NSXes, M series BMWs, and Corvettes. These EVs are exhilarating to drive and I don’t even miss the sounds. We’ve owned a few older Teslas, an 835 hp Rivian R1T and now an Audi Etron GT. The most fun you can have on four wheels!
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)

Ok you got me intrigued. I’ve driven the GT3 and think it’s pretty decent. I own a Lotus, how would you compare a 5N to a 6MT lotus?
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)

Morbidly_Off_Piste@reddit
hah, good timing on this post.
I'm about to sign a (cheap!) lease for a 5N as I want a fun daily driver next to my 992 GT3. Need the trunk space of the Ioniq to haul my road bike but don't want a full size SUV.
I know what a good driver's car is. This 5N is the best driver's car for the money, and the used ones are now down to $45k, it will absolutely smoke everything in that price bracket at the track. Only thing I don't like about it is that it's a Hyundai, it's not as good looking as the regular Ioniq 5, and they're hard to find.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
How much was your lease deal? I got 21k off on a Ioniq 9 today.
Morbidly_Off_Piste@reddit
36 months, 10k miles a year, $3k down - $653 incl taxes/registration. This is without me even countering (which I will)
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
That’s a good deal!
Bobodehclown@reddit
The simulated shifts are incredible and I had extensive seat time in one for about 6 months in my cousin's 5N, until the battery had a fault and needed a $45,000 battery replacement (under warranty of course) and Hyundai took 3 months to replace. They ended up buying the car back as a lemon.

its a great car for the right person. 4800 pounds is too heavy to be a sporty car . And as a luxury car its not nice enough inside for 66k. An 11.0 quarter is pretty slow for most 700hp cars, especially 700whp in something like a GTR, 911, or M3x that can take a full second off that time .... what you probably felt was the instant torque making the car feel quicker in regular use cases like most EVs do.
Kamukix@reddit
Shouldn't this be compared to other SUV's, not GTR's and 911's?
FunConsideration8243@reddit
I mean it's an EV, their point is fast acceleration, if they can't even keep up with combustion engined cars, what is the point? In terms of performance I mean.

ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Yeah, but for driving around town it’s rowdy and fun. I don’t need to go 120mph in the 1/4 mile. It also doesn’t feel like 4800lbs. The regular 5, you can really feel the weight. They were bang on with the suspension on this one.

I have two kids. I drive a w204 c63. No need for 3 rows. Maybe when they're older.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
I also have 2 dogs and travel to the mountains on a regular basis.
wwwhatisgoingon@reddit
Maybe I'm too European to understand this, but don't you put two adults in the front seats, two kids in child seats in the second row, and the dogs in the dog crate in the trunk?
Howwould the third row help?
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
We have family with young children. Dogs go in the boot.
WeAreAloneSadly@reddit
Dogs buckled in the seats. Use back for storage. That's the only way I can imagine needing a 3rd row. It's not super common for Americans to crate their dogs in the rear. At least in my experience. Mine is always buckled in the seat.

If feels like a race care.
I used to have a 2008 Porsche 911 turbo S for a month. It was my lot car. I wrang that thing out. It doesn't compare to the 5n. Sure the Porsche had the red interior with the matching car phone. But man, the ioniq is a special car. First car to convert this gear head.
PurpleSausage77@reddit
Driven more vehicles than I can remember as well. 100’s.
Drove a 5N, thing is hilarious. All smiles after getting out. Thing just teleports around.
But no goosebumps like when I got out of a Shelby GT350 after even just cruising around - the barking rev matches and crackles, felt like I was high after driving it, no words lol.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
That's the thing I love about well done EVs. The things are just instantly responsive. You basically think it and the car does it. Need to jump 20 mph to pass, boom you're there. Need to decelerate into a corner, lift off the gas a bit and strong regen does the rest. Getting onto my EV6 often feels like I'm getting into the cockpit an A-wing.
That said I understand why many enthusiasts don't love that. There's no drama to it. It's effortless. Rather than needing 3 pedals and a gear shift you only need one. There's no sound or rumble unless it's introduced artificially. I frankly don't care about any of that stuff and like not having it, but I understand why people do like it.
xlb250@reddit
I think 5,000 pound CUV is another reason.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
To be fair almost everything on the market regardless of powertrain is a 2-3 ton CUV.
xlb250@reddit
Yes, but you were referring to enthusiasts
FledglingNonCon@reddit
The ioniq5 N weighs exactly the same as the new charger six-pack. It does weigh 800lbs more than a mustang darkhorse and 1000lbs more than a corvette Eray. It only weighs a little more than a BMW X3 M. Pretty much everything on the market is close to or over 2 tons except for a handful of lightweight, 2 seaters which are pretty rare.
xlb250@reddit
Yes, the Charger is known as a land yacht.
Miata - 2,400 lbs
GR 86 - 2,800 lbs
Civic - 3,200 lbs
Corvette - 3,500 lbs
Mustang - 4,000 lbs
Charger - 4,800 lbs
Ioniq 5 N - 4,900 lbs
withoutapaddle@reddit
TIL the Ioniq 5N weighs as much as an F-150...
aprtur@reddit
GR Corolla and WRX (base) on that list, too. Ironically they're the same curb weight, at about 3270 lbs.
Careless-Trick-5117@reddit
I’m happy the sport compact cars are still pretty light. My Elantra N, the GRC, and the Type R are all sitting at around 3,200 lbs
aprtur@reddit
Yeah, considering my GRC has a curb weight barely off of what my 17 year old Mazda is, I'm impressed with how light it is for an AWD, five door hatchback.
FledglingNonCon@reddit
There are still a handful of light, fun cars, but seem like fewer every year.
Malbjey@reddit
There are heavy enthusiast SUVs and wagons on the market. See the Audi RS6 and BMW M5 touring.
crunchyjoe@reddit
Fr. Why the hell were the bolt and leaf discontinued? And we don't get half the EVs from foreign or Japanese brands. At least in Canada we are going to let in Chinese EVs but it seems like there will only be CUVs and SUVs at the moment.
UnknownColorHat@reddit
The bolt literally caught fire and charges like a slow pig, had a massive battery recall to fix the fires. Leafs are similar story with slow charging and use a unique to them plug here.
In fact, most other EV owners dislike seeing a bolt roll up on the shared charger next to you, its going to cut your speed down by half and not even use its full share.
Yes the larger problem is shared 350kw charging infra sucks as cars (like mine at 270kw or 320kw on the newest ones) are rated for higher KWs. Back when it was all bolts, you could share 350 kw between two and no one would complain. Now its slowing you down.
crunchyjoe@reddit
Well that could easily be fixed by a new model. The point is there are no small EVs available in north America.
T-Baaller@reddit
Shape and mass are definitely factors people (online especially) seem to forget can and will dampen your experiences.
If someone would sell me a BRZ-sized EV, I'd be eager to try it and can imagine having a lot of fun with it. Sadly the SC01 doesn't seem like a feasible import for me anytime soon.
xlb250@reddit
I would purchase an EV Miata instantly.
Vhozite@reddit
This. I’m not an EV hater but I do not want a huge CUV/SUV regardless of the method of propulsion
EV BRZ would be sex
kers2000@reddit

gaius49@reddit
Why be afraid of the GT350? Its got a full set of modern safety nannies and its pretty easy to drive fast.

It's still a mustang.
PurpleSausage77@reddit
Respect the power for sure, EV easily desensitizes the feeling
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Yes! I was laughing and smiling and just felt like a child again. Like I was playing Forza but IRL.
Ohhhh man I bet, those are incredible. There’s really nothing better than a flat plane crank V8. Honestly, I’d have a hard time choosing between the two only because gas is $5.50 a gallon.
JWH7210@reddit
“Like playing forza IRL” you mean driving?
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
I mean like... arcade.
Wardog008@reddit
I haven't driven anywhere near as many cars, nor any fun EVs, but that's kinda the bit that worries me. I don't like the idea of a car feeling like I'm driving in a game. Even when I drove an Octavia VRS, I immediately hated the fake engine noise from the speakers when I put it in sport mode.
I'm absolutely willing to have my mind changed if I ever get the chance to drive an EV designed around being fun, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sceptical.
localtuned@reddit
Have one, it feel very much like driving. Can confirm.

Many of the new IONIQ 5 and 9 models are made in a new factory in the US. It’s a sub-brand that feels like it lives in a space between most other Hyundai vehicles and most Genesis vehicles. Better QC than earlier years in my limited experience.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Totally fair.
smikkelhut@reddit
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has an official WLTP combined range of up to 448 km (278 miles). However, in real-world driving conditions, you can expect between 310 km and 440 km depending on your speed and the weather.Because it is a high-performance EV packing 641 horsepower, how you drive it will heavily impact your range. Real-world range breaks down roughly as follows: City & Mixed Driving: 360 km – 440 km. Highway Speeds (110–120 km/h): 260 km – 310 km. Winter/Cold Weather: 200 km – 320 km. Track / Spirited Driving: Under 200 km (expect significantly higher consumption)
Sorry just copying from google AI. That doesn’t sound practical at all?
I know you are talking about fun to drive. But like a 3-series is fun to drive AND the diesel will last 1000+ km on one tank?
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Idk that a BMW Diesel and a 5N are playing the same game. I’m sure the BMW is fine. I’m just saying the 5N was ridiculous in all the best ways.
samzplourde@reddit
How'd it compare to a Tesla?
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Not even close. The Tesla has no soul. They’re boring to look at. I guess unless you get a plaid but I really liked everything about the 5N.
DupassNickel@reddit
coming from someone who usually only cares about naturally aspirated engines and analog driving -- that 5N genuinely surprised me when I sat in one. the N-Grin Shift mode hitting back-to-back fake downshifts is doing something no electric car should be able to do. still a JDM guy at heart but respect where it is earned
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
100%. We have a blown 350z making 450hp and it’s a fucking hoot. The 5N is also a fucking hoot.
eh_itzvictor@reddit
THANK 👏 YOU 👏
I have not driven MANY cars... but I drove a CT5V Blackwing, a supercharged R53 Mini, a C8, a Miata.
The 5N is so much more enjoyable than all of them.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
It’s just so much fun.
JWH7210@reddit
I can’t believe people will moan about cars like the E92 M3 when they have a sunroof and a DCT but one little mini game in an EV has the purests doing backflips I don’t understand it lol but I’m sure it’s a fun car regardless
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
I had an E46 with the SMG and it was a great car. What I like about the EV is you can beat the shit out of it and it won't need any transmission or engine work.
JWH7210@reddit
For sure, but I think fake shifts and sounds being the only or primary reason for someone to get onboard with EVs is weird.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
It just… makes it fun.

ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Test drove, I was buying an Ioniq 9 today.
Bitter_Cat_8793@reddit
that's saying a lot coming from someone who's been behind the wheel of basically everything. the ioniq 5n really does hit different, it's hard to explain until you feel it yourself.
bumphuckery@reddit
Interesting take. I like how EVs have highlighted a divide between people who describe EVs as visceral and those who'd only describe rowdy and loud ICEs as visceral. Nothing wrong with either, but I do find it interesting.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
I’ve driven both and it really does a fantastic job of replicating the experience. Of course a giant blown V8 with no assists is going to be visceral, but also dangerous and frightening.
gaius49@reddit
I grant my Cobra lacks a blower, but it checks all the other boxes, as well as being about the size and weight of a 1990 miata. Its also a stupidly easy and friendly car to drive at any speed.
xlb250@reddit
Reminds me of the analog vs. digital divide for hi-fi.
Analog is “real” in the sense that the sound is produced by mechanical interaction between parts.
Digital can reproduce the same electrical signal, but does it with transistors and software.
My only criticism is that fake car sound implementation is low fidelity at this point.
bumphuckery@reddit
The art is derivative thing is a supremely interesting take to me, given I lean towards turning off the simulated things and leaving them for Assetto Corsa, etc. I get it from your perspective, at least. I still fail to understand the direct appeal of 'fake' sensory experiences because I also enjoy EVs for the quiet and smooth power delivery. Simulating the drawbacks of an ICE seems odd at face value to me.
xlb250@reddit
Looks like you have different goals?
Quiet and smooth are related to peacefulness.
Enthusiasm, particularly with sports cars, is more related to excitement. Louder and rougher can be more exciting in some cases. Imagine a sports car with zero steering feel and completely isolated from road noise.
Milksaucey@reddit
I mean, do you like music? Unless you're going to a live band practically all music is fake. Do you like movies? They're all fake. Reading a real book vs an eBook is all the same to me. The majority of things you enjoy are fake in some sense, really.
bumphuckery@reddit
Is the musician telling me he's playing jazz but ends up playing experimental noise music with sponges and a signal generator?
If I explicitly wanted a physical book or wanted an ereader and someone sold me the opposite, I'd question it.
I get your point but a thing simulating something it isn't intended to be is different than reproductions of things.
Milksaucey@reddit
I think the disconnect is the belief that cars must be a certain way and that any changes to that paradigm is a lie of some sort. There's already all kinds of trickery used to make an engine sound the way it does. It's all the same to me.
strongmanass@reddit
As much as I favor EVs and think much of the reaction to and love for ICE cars is learned, there are aspects that are genuinely visceral. Feeling the low frequency rumble of a big engine in your stomach isn't a learned response. I don't like it, but a lot of people do. That's something an EV can't replicate without being gimmicky to the point of ridiculous.
Foreign-Box-4063@reddit
Mini SE might be worth a look if you can manage the low range, not as fast as the 5N but still a hot hatch imo with an emphasis on low curb weight and handling
analyticaljoe@reddit
I'd have bought a used one and not looked back had a used one come on the market at the time I was shopping. Instead spent quite a bit more and bought a used 2022 Taycan Turbo S. Also big fun.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Crazy to consider that's even a cross-shop.
analyticaljoe@reddit
TLDR: not many EVs are really tuned for fun driving. That's the thing the 5N and the Taycan share. I find the Teslas to be quick but dumb to the road.
More words: Yeah, I'm an unusual buyer. I'd been driving a 2001 BMW M Coupe (the clown shoe with the 300hp motor) from new for the last 25 years. But my wife no longer felt she could drive the M in an emergency so it had to go.
In the mean time, I became an EV guy due to my wife's Model S. Never going to the gas station works for me. Big time. And EVs depreciate a lot. Especially Taycans. I also became pretty well off so the price difference of used models was no big deal.
So I was tracking used 5N's and used Taycans. At the time used 5Ns were really unusual. (No idea now, this is about 8 months ago.) The right Taycan showed up before a 5N.
MMinjin@reddit
Needs a "rally" version. Bigger tires. Not lowered. More suitable for driving on real roads. I can't stand the rubber band tires that manufacturers put on the performance versions of cars.
MumpsyDaisy@reddit
put a big fuckin rally wing on it too because why the hell not
Kamukix@reddit
They have that XRT version of the Ioniq 5, it's got sweet meaty tires and it's not low. It's looks pretty cool 👍👍

I hadn't heard of that. Not bad. Opens them up to a possible XRT-N.
Kamukix@reddit
Yea my wife and I went to the Hyundai dealership one day and saw a cool paint color on an Ioniq 5, and then I spied the tires from distance. Had to go check it out, it's very cool, the reviews I saw were good too.

localtuned@reddit
You own a shop, so you know the truth...all cars are shit and there is no perfect model.

There is almost nothing more fun than being used to a car and then suddenly driving a version of the same car with way way more power and better handling, more stuff etc.
So I think you’re probably a little biased.
That said, very cool car. I can’t wait to see what they do next with fake transmissions. I know people hate the idea of them, but I just don’t see the big issue, it’s already essentially there just for fun and engagement. I don’t care if it’s fake if it feels real enough.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Exactly, the feel is what I like about it and this knocks it out of the park.

ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
Interesting, that sounds pretty rough. Do you think you have a lemon?

I test drove one of these and it's almost too much.
For example, I was going "arrest me" speeds in a few seconds.
Getting onto the highway I floored it through the ramp and lost the back end a little bit. It is intense and fun. I have a Mach-e GT and love it, but this was on another level.
The biggest downsides are:
1. The range of 200 miles/ 170 when you only charge to 80%/ 140 in the winter is pretty brutal
2. It's really almost too fast to have fun. It is cool to impress your friends, but you are paying a lot for a "once is a while" rush.
Still, I look at the prices from time to time. Especially that rebel blue. Maybe once they get the ICCU thing all figured out.
Hyundai is always "getting more reliable" except that one problem (Theta II engines/ICCU/Kia Boys)
sorebutton@reddit
I saw a youtube reviewer that changed to smaller wheels and got a lot more range out of his. I think slightly narrower tires too.
spacetimebear@reddit
I dunno man. It's a great car and a lot of fun but there are much greater cars out there. That being said I regret not getting one when I had the chance.
Bubbly-Pirate-3311@reddit
It would be nice if we could have small electric cars from Hyundai cuz they seem to be knocking it outta the park right now with their EVs. That said, I'm not quite sure I can understand why it's that fun, cuz for me, like lots of other people, it's a lot about the noise and feeling.
captstinkybutt@reddit
Yep.
It's the car that finally made me jump ship from ICEV to EV. Makes me smile every time I'm driving it.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)

NWbySW@reddit
How did you find the ride quality? I'm considering one as a DD. I heard the range sucks but I could careless about that. Just waiting for the price to drop another 5k or so.
Most every car I've owned have been in springs/coils and <40 aspect tires so it'd have to be BAD to get me off it.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
It was definitely a bit bumpy / sporty. I didn’t turn it down to comfort so I’m not sure how much that improves things. All I can say is I was laughing and smiling and felt like a kid.

ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)

Subatomic_Spooder@reddit
I drove one once for work (I work prepping cars for sale at a dealer) and I can say out of everything I've driven it is the most fun I've ever had in a car. The way that it just instantly moves you from one place to another is addicting. The steering and chassis feel pretty phenomenal too. And being able to make adjustments on the fly is pretty cool. Launch mode actually made me hit my head against the seat hard enough to leave a minor bruise. It's such a ridiculously powerful and performant car, yet it doesn't take itself so seriously that it doesn't feel fun anymore.
jse000@reddit
If they could stop simulating an engine randomly blowing that'd be cool.
I really wish Hyundai would get their quality sorted, the depreciation hit these take makes a used one really appealing.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit (OP)
I agree. I’ve fixed more Hyundai’s than I can count. I would never own an ICE Hyundai.
