Is there a singular generation of a car that changed the demographics of its buyers more than the C8 Corvette?
Posted by LongjumpingLock5875@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 175 comments
Since the launch of the C8 Corvette in 2020, the buyer demographic of the Corvette changed drastically in terms of the automotive world.
The average age of a buyer decreased by >7 years, and it became the #1 Sports car sold for those <35, both of which would be a crazy statistic for any other generation Corvette.
I was wondering if there were any other cars that had such a drastic shift in buyers from one generation to the next(minus cars that completely changed category like the Eclipse Cross, Mustang EV, etc)?
Just_a_happy_artist@reddit
Cadillac, corvette…terrible cars .how does anyone buy these things? How do you get yourself to say that this is what you want?
Oo__II__oO@reddit
Infiniti G Series, when they introduced the coupe (G35). Up to then it was a compact luxury sedan to rival Lexus and Acura in a driveway to show the neighbors you made it, you had money and class, as well as the wherewithal to not buy a German luxury car. Then the RWD sedan and (more notably) coupe came along, and soon after the demographics changed from the yuppie type buyer to boy-racers who moved on from Nissan (as they ditched their sport offerings at that time too).
k_dubious@reddit
Maybe the current Defender? It went from being a car for farmers and off-road enthusiasts to one for normie rich suburbanites.
AKADriver@reddit
Every generation of LR/RR product has been a step in that direction from its predecessor every time.

Current defender isn't the same as old defenders, fortunately or not. Capability is also not the same, contrary to a G-wagen.

Never seen a farmer or off roader in a Defender. They’ve been status symbols for the wealthy since the 90s.

We had one on our farm. It did duties on the farm, including transporting the workers.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Yeah, because that's when they redesigned them to do that, hence the shift from farmers to rich suburbanites.

Been saying that about C8s, truly has challenged the New Balance dominance that car has suffered for years.
The Blackwings sell at an age difference of 10 years younger than other Cadillac buyers.
ICantDecideIt@reddit

It came with Northstar engines. Not the actual Corvette engines. At its conception, it was a gimped Corvette.

When new, it was very popular with sports stars— basketball and football players who liked the idea of a luxury vehicle that was also really roomy inside. These are not small people. They’re way taller and broader than the average person.
A suburban at the time had no cache, but a Cadillac had interior finishes and a feature set that resembled a luxury car in addition to being easy to get in and out of.
JoyRydr@reddit
Well the crazy thing is, Escalade money doesn't get you a 911, and God forbid you want a 911 with some options. Hell, an Escalade is only a few thousand more than a Cayenne and while I'd definitely prefer a Cayenne, I can totally see why many would pick the Escalade.

63% of C8 owners are still over 55 yo, it's still an older guy's car. This site has a nice breakdown of the demographics. https://hedgescompany.com/blog/2024/12/corvette-demographics/
I live in a wealthy suburb in the midwest and C8s are everywhere, especially Z06's. When I see the drivers, they all look the same: 60+yo white guys. So yes, while maybe the buyer ages are trending downwards, it's still the jorts/new balance guys.
Compare this to the 911 guys, a car that is much more expensive, and owners are definitely younger.

2nd gen Prius.
The original Prius was almost exclusively for nerds and tree huggers with a bit of extra cash to blow. It was an interesting idea, but it didn't have much mass appeal.
The 2nd gen Prius was insanely successful among many different demographics. It showed the world that a hybrid can fit into anyone's life. The widespread popularity of that car changed the entire auto industry forever.
br0wntree@reddit
Tesla is sort of similar. It turned EVs as a category for nerds and tree huggers into something desirable and even a status symbol (at least initially).
itsnottommy@reddit
True. Worth noting though that Tesla doesn’t fit neatly into the discussion of generations because they’ve never produced a second generation of any model.

JxSnaKe@reddit
Wouldn’t the facelifts of the 3 and Y be considered 2nd gen?
itsnottommy@reddit
Not really. More of a heavy refresh. Think the current Hyundai Sonata compared to the 2019-2023 model. New interior, front and rear end styling, wheels, maybe a couple powertrain revisions here and there, but still the same car.
Regular-Bother-832@reddit

Second gen? Or third gen? The second gen was at the height of people making fun of Priuses and their owners. Not a bad little car, but still very dorky. The third gen started shaking off that vibe before it came back a bit with the much-maligned fourth gen.
And the fifth gen of course has completely changed the narrative. It's a cool car now. Not quite cool cool, but still cool.

If the EV mustang counts as a "mustang" it would likely be that.
kstetter@reddit
The Mach-E is not 'the EV mustang', and it will never be a mustang
CrispityCraspits@reddit
That's how mustang people feel, and I tend to agree, but you could have also said "Corvettes will always be front engined, so the C8 isn't a Corvette." Is the current Chevy Trailblazer a Trailblazer? It seems like you can really only go by what the manufacturer says.
kstetter@reddit
The difference is that it spits on the legacy of the Mustang, an 4-door EV Crossover.
The Trailblazer is still considered a SUV, now a Crossover
The Corvette has been Chevrolet's flagship sports car for years, changing engine position doesn't spit on it's legacy nearly as much
CrispityCraspits@reddit
I know people who would say the current "trailblazer" spits on the legacy of the old one just as much, because it is a tall wagon and not a 4x4 truck.
At any rate the question here is about the change in a car's demographic between generations, not whether the changes to the car were unworthy of the model name.
162630594@reddit
I don't have any hard numbers to go off of. But the "aero bird" 1983 Ford Thunderbird completely changed the design philosophy of the Thunderbird. Since the 70s, the Thunderbird turned into a soft, giant, chromed out personal luxury coupe that had 0 appeal to anyone under the age of 60 and had no sporty intentions.
But in 83 they completely ditched that idea and brought out a much more aerodynamic design with less chrome, and a turbocharged 4 cylinder performance model available. They kind of turned it into a more plus sized Mustang in a way.
Safe_Chicken_6633@reddit
I think you could say the same of the second generation T-Bird. It completely changed the design brief from the 1955-57 generation.

The C7 corvette was still highly derivative of the C4 that came out in 1984, 30 years beforehand. The C8 hardly looks like a corvette and has a completely new mid engine chassis layout. I just don't see how the C8 is derivative in any way. The key selling point when it was released was that you could get a V8 mid engine sports car starting at $60k. Whether or not that was what actually happened is a different matter, but it is far from overpriced. Good luck finding any other sports car like it for even below $120k
