Driving anxiety, how to overcome?

Try setting very small targets then working up. Start with driving round the block and then stopping. Tell yourself that you only need to achieve a pre determined set of turns and will only see a couple of cars in that time. Then when you come back in one piece celebrate it, reward yourself. Then one you’ve done that a few times increase the distance.

Lifelong anaemia sufferer hear. Part of my research shows that taking ferrous fumurate daily can be counter productive (due to rising hepcidin levels blocking absorption). The optimum seems to be alternate days taken alongside a vitamin c supplement. There’s a British haematology consultant called Drew Provan who has a series on tiktok about this subject, he goes into a lot of detail, might be worth a watch so you can arm yourself with info for the next time you see your Dr.

I’m a type A blue, so to me it seems an obvious and straightforward question. The job you do is so telling about your personality, your interests, your communication preferences. Someone answering accountant compared to freelance abstract dancer is going to open up completely different avenues of conversation. I’ve never quite understood how people can spend 50% of their waking lives doing something but then be so against talking about it. And if it’s that bad you don’t want to talk about it, might be time for a new job

Context. It’s fine for me to say I’m going out on the town with the girls It’s not fine for my dad to repeatedly call his mid-30s qualified dentist “the young girl who does my teeth”. Fine in social context not fine in a professional one

You’ve missed my point entirely. I’m saying that a medical PhD and lifetime in healthcare industry “should”, according to most people mean that I have all the knowledge the tools to understand the impact that obesity has on my health, and I’m saying that’s done nothing at all to help me.

That’s a bit like saying there were no alcoholics before alcohol was invented. Of course not, but some people are fundamentally predisposed to become one, and others will have circumstantial influences which will further enhance that. But the root cause is not that they’re just not trying hard enough.

Wow so many people in this thread already with no personal experience of obesity giving big bold claims without actually having lived it themselves. I’m a (to quote someone else in this thread) middle class national truster with an Oxford PhD and lifetime in medical research, access to psychologists, surgery, personal trainers. I should have all the tools to maintain a healthy body weight. I’ve tried every single option and lost and gained more weight than I could ever recall. The only thing that has actually worked sustainably is GLP-1s. I know it hurts a lot of you that it turns out that your ability to maintain a normal weight is not because of your superior motivation skills. Obesity is fundamentally at a very basic level about calories in, calories out - but there are clearly so many other factors controlling the bigger picture and many of these are not within an individual’s control

3 days a week now in the office. How hard are they enforcing this?

Posted by weregonnamakit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

vientianna@reddit

My company is enforcing hybrid working for all new hires, promotions and job switches (basically any time anyone signs a new contract). There is only one office in the UK and it’s 400 miles from me so hybrid working is not an option. I have always been remote even before covid as it doesn’t really make sense for my role to be in the office. So I have have zero progression opportunities with my company now, as I’ll be stuck in my role forever. Good one, whoever made that decision in senior management

My mum has been waiting over a year for an operation, is there anyone else dealing with the same thing?

Posted by Expensive-Emu-4840@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 32 comments

If you have private insurance you’d just pay the excess for everything which is about 150-250. Without insurance it’s about 200ish for the appointment and then whatever for the procedure which will be in the 8-12k mark depending on what operation it is. So without insurance the private op might be out of reach, but just having the consultation could be worthwhile

They went on the website of their local private hospital - search Nuffield or Spire for examples. These hospitals will list consultants per discipline and what they specialise in. Then call up the hospital and ask to make an appointment with that consultant. Much more straightforward than going through the NHS. Most consultants work both privately and via the NHS and she got lucky that her consultant deemed her case an emergency that he was able to put her on the NHS cancellation list. That’s not going to happen regularly.

My mum has gone through a very similar thing. Years ago she got desperate waiting on the nhs, paid to see a private consultant and he operated on her the next day (on the nhs!) saying if they waited any longer she’d be paralysed. So the £200 fee was money well spent. Now she’s back in a loop of trying to see different consultants. Eventually saw a consultant the other day but the nerve conduct tests she had done in December hadn’t been read yet so there was nothing he could do. Complete joke
