My wife is a teacher, and our spend rate during the school holidays when she's at home is astronomical.
It's not that she overspends or unnecessarily spends (although she does but that's a different issue), it's more that you can't expect someone to sit around all day doing nothing. All it takes is a lunch out here and there, trip to visit a friend, bit of DIY that we've been meaning to tick off for a while etc, and that's a couple of hundred quid spent easily.
I look forward to when she goes back to work and we can save some money.

Such a tricky question. A lot of people would suggest doing things that cost money, and that money would not be spent if you were doing your job.
So I like to think Iād exercise more, read more, start drawing and painting again and maybe try to learn an instrument.

I currently live in London for career opportunities but I absolutely despise this city so my priority would be to get out ASAP. I would move to a much cheaper location, preferably somewhere with close access to nature.
Then I'd spend all my free time on my hobbies. Learn languages, play guitar, gym 6 days a week, cook good food. Life would be great.
jkt2ldn@reddit
Have you tried living in different area/borough? Some area can be very different and pleasant to live. If you like outdoor, being away from high street and living near the park can make it more enjoyable. Or if youāre young and enjoy going out, you might prefer to live in more trendy areas. Obviously, there is a price for that, but worth expanding to zone 3-4.
um-nome-@reddit
Yea, I agree there are nice areas of London! And it has a lot of good things to offer (tonnes of good food, activities and events etc).
But, for some reason, I have just never gelled with the city since moving here after Uni 5 years ago. Sitting on the tube for 1+ hours per day, squished between a bunch of sweaty people people - or walking down busy, litter filled streets passing by countless homless/junkies/roadmen. I've just never felt 'at home' there, which is weird because I do love other busy cities around the world.
Actually, I recently called it quits and moved out to Cambridge which I much prefer (aside from the £30-£40 train ticket to get to my office in London lol). But I think the commute is gonna kill me soon (although 1.5h on an air conditioned train is infinitely better than the 45m tube journey I previously had imo).
jkt2ldn@reddit
Good luck with the move.
If you ever get bored with 1.5hr commute and aircon, you could always move back to London. Just saying. š

That is pretty much me right now!
I was made redundant back in March with very sweet redundancy pay; at the same time, I already had a new job lined up where Iām starting mid-June, so fuck-all to do for 3 months and āgetting paidā as usual every month (from the bit of the redundancy pay that is sitting on my savings account)
I went on a week-long holiday early April (that was already planned), Iām going to the gym/swimming every day, Iām sure by now my dog hates me because sheās never walked so much, Iām catching up on cooking, reading and life admin and Iām doing a couple of work-related certifications. Iāve also been able to book appointments with tradespeople for home improvements/redecorating that I simply didnāt have the time to properly look into.
All that, though, still leaves a whole lot of hours a day with nothing much to do and Iām bored beyond whatās possible to explain!
pokey_bum@reddit
This is me for a short time now. Iām on a two month garden leave. Iām spending my time at the gym, hiking, road cycling, mountain biking, running, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Iām baking and cooking as much as I can. Plus Iām spending loads of time with my kids. I also coach the kids at rugby league and just finished off the same at rugby union. Itās honestly epic! The chores are all done. It hard not to just veg out and stream every day, but itās good keeping hobbies going. Iāve got a little decorating left to do. Lastly Iāve incorporated an afternoon nap into most days. Iāve genuinely never felt better. Iām back working at the very end of June.

I am a software engineer who specialises in Data Engineering and DevSecOps.
For 15 years I have watched people entirely new recreate the same basic solutions, those people recreate the same basic mistakes and usually burn out. If people get past that stage they typically start building a high specific and non reusable solution to every problem, eventually they realise their solution is not portable and loose interest.
My job for 10 years has felt like joining a company and inheriting a soluting which is either half implemented or contains masses of bespoke nonsense. I cut most of it back, ensure standardised workflows and patterns, hook it into the appropriate endpoints and then refactor into a generic solution through testing.
Then other teams ask for consultancy where I explain how framework/tool is designed to work, what they have done and how we refactor it. Then the generic solution is dropped in.
It just feels stuck solving the same thing, when there are far more interesting problems. I have reached the point where I work in my own time creating true generic solutions, its slow going as I need to do it sustainably.
My big plan is to upstream the generic solutions into open source projects. If you gave me more time, I would just work 10-3pm doing that, so I can drop my kid off to school each day.

Just going to leave this poem here:
"If had my life to live over, I'd dare to make more mistakes next time. I'd relax, I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I'm one of those people who lived sensibly and sanely, hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I've had my moments, and if I had to do it over again, I'd have more of them. In fact, I'd try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day. I've been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies."

Honestly? Go nuts.
I was made redundant and put on gardening leave for a couple of months at full salary. Other than job applications I didn't really have much to do.
