What meals do you like to cook on a self catering holiday?

Posted by rdazza@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 55 comments

Pasta and sauce. Anything with rice. Curry, chilli in a can is dead good. Fajitas. Stir fry. Pizza. Soup and bread. We also buy loads of veg in cans cos they keep easily and use a steamer to cook them.

FYI if you're ever looking for staff, the conductor will be at the opposite end to the driver. I've had to go and hunt them out when a man was being attacked on the train. I don't think a train will run with just a driver but I might be wrong. If I were in your situation, and I couldn't find a member of staff, and BTP were unhelpful, and 999 were unhelpful, I would have found an intercom or pressed emergency stop. But it's a hard situation and you did the best you could. Well done!

I hesitated writing that. Very well known film where I'm from but I'm a brass bander who lives in Barnsley - so very much who the film was made for! So wasn't sure how well known it was outside that demographic.

91. I get told when I have to take them. I'm expected to work through them. I cannot take any time off around that time. I do not get paid for most of them. I'm a teacher.

My mum used to speak really fast and I always thought she said "communal garden" when she meant something was ordinary. It wasn't until I was a teacher, reading the book "How to Train Your Dragon" to my Year 4s that I learnt it was actually "common or garden".

I'm going to go and watch a rehearsal because I'm a sad bastard 😂 But it's an opportunity to be with the husband. Normally we'd enjoy a nice walk, maybe stop for a drink at the pub, head home and chill out.

People of the UK what's your vice in life?.

Posted by Various_Extreme_8773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 336 comments

im_not_funny12@reddit

Drinking and eating. Working on the eating. I still think about food constantly but I'm better at not giving in. I don't drink at home anymore but I still have another drink when I shouldn't when I'm out. This was not something that was such an issue during COVID when I wasn't working. Stress has a lot to answer for.

Nope. We leave the gate open so he can get in the back and he drops a note through with how much we owe him. When we had one who wouldn't do bank transfers he'd drive round everyone in the evening every few months for the cash.

Yes, a relative sectioned 3 times. Everytime she was actively trying to off herself. The lead up had just been constant referral to CAHMS. There is not enough space in the system to take people if they are not an imminent threat to themselves or others.

im_not_funny12@reddit

No it's way too cold. But you could absolutely live in a caravan or a motor home. Theres a caravan that is parked up near a services round us. He uses them to top up his water, presumably uses their showers if he wants a good one, has a generator for electric. I dont want to think about where hes emptying his toilet. But if you booked into a campsite periodically to sort you stuff out I would think its much cheaper.

Did you see passing the 11+ as something really important?

Posted by untoldrain@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 206 comments

im_not_funny12@reddit

My mum passed it and her sister didnt. My Nan was mortified. She pulled all sorts of strings to get my auntie into the secondary modern, not the technical school she actually got into. This was in the 60s. She'd bought the uniform for the grammar and everything. So it definitely counted with some people.

How To Deal With Teens Harassing You on the Bus?

Posted by let_it_rain_boat@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 513 comments

im_not_funny12@reddit

Either you have to be confident enough to deal with them...which can mean calling them out. That very much depends on witnesses. Ive done it when kids have been harassing someone else but only if theres other people around to back me up if necessary. In your case where you clearly dont feel confident? Id move. They'll laugh at you. You might hear them jeering you but honestly what does that matter? When they get to the point of physically assaulting you theres not much else you can do. Move away. If they follow you, you tell the bus driver. They dont want trouble either. They'll stop the bus and kick them off or they'll stop and call for help.

My brother in law got high the night before and nobody could wake him up. He blamed his 10 year old son. Then he disappeared (I'll be honest, didnt care really) and got high again. He disappeared all night and showed up in the early hours of the morning asleep in the hotel lobby. He then tried to drive them home. My sister refused to get in the car with him as he was under the influence so she had to get lifts with other family members for her and the two kids because he refused to let her drive. When they divorced, that was the day she put down as the day they separated 😂😂 I wouldn't have invited him but felt i had to.

Time to find a hobby. I play in brass bands and its where all my friends come from. There are plenty of groups out there for adults to learn a new skill. Not just musical: sporty, languages, knitting etc. Have an ask around on local FB groups. I know it can be daunting to try something new as an adult but loads of groups are especially made for it. Good luck!

Do you have any advice for a funeral speech / eulogy?

Posted by Twat_Features@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 89 comments

im_not_funny12@reddit

Write in big font well spaced out. When your eyes are swimming with tears, finding where you are will be really difficult. Brief the reverend or someone close to be ready to take over. You may well break down. That is OK. Do not look at people. You will cry more. Pick a point above everybody's head and stare at that. If it comes to it and you find you can't get up, that's ok. Read it later at her wake, or share it online. No way could I have done it at my mums or my dads. My husband and my brothers wife did it and they only just got through it. We all said there was no way we could say anything. I am so sorry for your loss. If I need to not cry, I think of something incredibly inappropriate. If I think of something happy I will cry anyway, so I always think of something that would make me laugh. That may or may not work for you or you may think you dont want to be thinking about that at your mums funeral. However you feel, however you react, it is always ok. Much love x

We got the stockings out the loft and I overhead my mum saying how my brothers and sisters stocking had loads of rubbish inside them (dust, spiderwebs, general crap from being in the loft). Mine (having been made 7 years later due to me being an accident) was slightly bigger so was clean. I wrote a letter to father Christmas letting him know and to make sure he still filled their stockings. My mum had cleaned them up but wrote me a letter back saying thank you for letting him know, he had left some extra presents outside our stockings for everyone. I reckon that got me at least an extra year of believing out of that letter.
