Threads was class, but When The Wind Blows is much more impactful.
kilgore_trout1@reddit
Great film but fucking horrifying. It genuinely affected my sleep for days after watching it.
Trumpsarightbollock@reddit
I lived in Sheffield when this came out.Everywhere in the film was so familiar it was awful to watch and affected sleep and eating for weeks, it's all anyone could talk about at work.
ZeroFrogsHere@reddit
I got showed this in GCSE media studies because I'm from south Yorkshire and our teacher wanted to show us a local film.
That was over a decade ago and to this day I get full body shivers whenever I think about Threads, I've never seen a film since that has come close to how awful that film made me feel. It's just so unbelievably bleak.

Isn’t that astonishingly famous though? If it’s not, it’s just because of its age.
Certainly I’d be surprised at anybody in Newcastle not recognising its main theme tune!
MyManTheo@reddit
I doubt many people younger than 40 has seen it though. The theme is very recognisable in Newcastle but they’ll all just know it as the song that they play at St James’

I’m certain that they all know its name and that it’s from a film too… even if, as you say, they might not have seen it

Famous for the radio announcing football scores and Albion are beating Man U. Get in.
TheCammack81@reddit
Yeah, it’s a classic kitchen sink drama about a young couple and an unplanned pregnancy, really need to finish it one day as I was eager to see how it worked out for Ruth and her cat.

I don’t want to spoil it for you, but there is a bit of a bombshell coming up…

When the Wind Blows scares me far more these days.
moderatefairgood@reddit
When the Wind Blows was absolutely brutal. Both the book and the film adaptation.
Threads is horrifying, but When the Wind Blows is like being punched in the stomach. Everyone sees their dear old grandparents. A hard watch/read, but worth it.

The Lair of the White Worm.
Absolutely bonkers horror b-movie starring Amanda Donohoe, Peter Capaldi and pre-4 Weddings Hugh Grant.
I remember seeing it late one Saturday night on Channel 4 and thinking ‘wtf is this!? and being immediately engrossed in the madness.
I think the best way of describing it is as a very pervy Hammer Horror homage.

Fluffy_Ad2274@reddit
Ah, well take it as a compliment about how youthful you look in your avatar 🤣
It was pretty heavily written about in the papers when it came out. I didn't see it until some years later, but because it was quite subversive to create a comedy about extremism, it felt like you couldn't get away from it in the news. But apparently, I'm very much over-rembering the publicity it got!

You do realise the joke was that he DIDN'T disguise himself when buying them right? He was lying to Barry but Barry kept pressing him so he kept coming up with excuses
Charly_030@reddit
That fact has been lost somewhere.
CarrotRunning@reddit
Think you might have missed the nuance of the humor. A satirical look at the panic around home grown terrorism that had been gaining steam since the war on terror. This was the exact kind of thing we did in comic strips and songs to lampoon Hitler and the Nazis. Making terrorist last of the summer wine was both brave, clever and funny.
General-Chicken-4716@reddit
What comedies do you like?
PatientArugula7504@reddit
The Muslim society at my university put a showing of it on lol
Illustrious_Study_30@reddit
My Muslim boss at the time loved this film. He considered it scarily accurate .
Ceiling-Crawler@reddit
Because he was smart enough to realise the film is mocking islamophobes, not Muslims.
chuckles5454@reddit
LOL. Yes, that's what it was mocking.
blueroses8000@reddit
Never met a Muslim who doesn’t love it. I think we’re the films biggest fans and OG fans from the start when not many others knew of it, as it’s even funnier to us because a lot of the references are accurate and there’s little things you only know/get if you’re Muslim.
It’s hilarious to everyone though of course, just that there’s a lot of things in there that are really well observed as the makers went to properly spend time and research in relevant areas.
Illustrious_Study_30@reddit
Yes exactly.
Christian-Metal@reddit
That's not a good thing.
Illustrious_Study_30@reddit
Dumb people leading the charge to join Isis? I found that enormously reassuring. The Muslim community agreeing they are dumb? Also reassuring. It's a very good thing.
Christian-Metal@reddit
The fact it's seen as "accurate" and that this is known in the wider community? It's very chilling.
BandicootTreeline@reddit
That only complete fucking morons joined isis?
It’s more worrying that you didn’t get that from it.
twirling_daemon@reddit
You’re not very smart are you‽ 😂 guarantee you’re super vocal though & feel your opinion warrants inclusion in everything
Including/especially (‽) topics you’re very ignorant about
Here is a prime example 🙃🫠🤣
blueroses8000@reddit
It’s accurate in references, behaviour, mannerisms, language etc, not the subject of a group of terrorists.
FeedFrequent1334@reddit
Accurate in the sense that it portrays a ragtag group of incredibly dimwitted wannabe extremists, who are an incredibly small minority of even their own local religious communities and not representative of the overwhelming majority of the UK Muslim population, yes.
Accurate. Not chilling at all.

He really is. I'm reading his book 'A pocketful of Happiness' at the moment. It's so heartwarming and inspiring.
I think every actor in the film was perfectly cast. Ralph Brown (Danny the drug dealer) is a friend of a friend of mine, he wished me happy birthday on fb this year. I felt quite lightheaded!

BrokenFist-73@reddit
Tragic, mate. Tragic. I'm 52 and was taken to see it by my parents when it came out in '87 at a little independent cinema in Bradford, now absorbed into the National Photography and Film Museum- almost certainly gets bigger audiences now but has lost the atmosphere. My wife, 48, saw it long before we met and quotes it frequently, and I don't think a single one of my friends at any stage of my life hasn't seen it. However, my younger work colleagues, none of whom are over 40, look at me quizzically on occasions when cake is served .....

Yellowbeard. Most of the Monty Python cast, Peter Cook, Cheech & Chong, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, James Mason, Spike Milligan, and a cameo from David Bowie.
I mean, it’s a terrible film but I like it.
TempFroaway@reddit
You take that back right now you filthy hussy!

It seems like several of the cast considered it one of the worst movies ever made. Doesn’t stop me enjoying the hell out of it.

Didnt know that some of the cast felt that.
Im the same. Its a silly whimsical film that Ive enjoyed thoroughly over the years!
Ivan_Dobsky_MD@reddit
Cleese and Idle have both commented on how bad they think it is, but Eric Idle does seem to have had fun making it.
When you tell people who’s in the movie and what it’s about, they think you’re making it up. Start quoting it, and they’ll think you’re mad.
Extension-Worry2253@reddit
I love this film! Stellar cast taking the piss, it is one of my favourite films of all time. Not many scenes that don’t stand out! Even Python following friends have not heard of it!
Ivan_Dobsky_MD@reddit
Considering the cast, it is strange how few people have heard of it, let alone seen it. I remember several times doing “Stagger, stagger. Crawl, crawl.” after a night on the piss, and nobody getting the reference. It has some great quotable lines, but nobody recognises the quotes.
More people seem to know Erik the Viking than know Yellowbeard.
LordGeni@reddit
Yes! A man of culture.
An absolutely incredible cast, probably the most stacked cast of comedians ever. It is terrible though, but for a few great gags:
"3 farthings for a lump of shit"
"That looks nothing like me"
"Are you mad women, I haven't got fruit in me loins. Lice! And proud of them".
"Killing Plants"
Etc.

Passport to Pimlico - a lot of people know of the Ealing Comedies but few actually watch them, and it's one of the less well-known titles, but still worth a watch, 75 years on.
The Mick Travis trilogy: if...., O Lucky Man!, Britannia Hospital. The first is watched more than the other two; the third is my favourite. (If you know Little Britain by Dreadzone, you've heard a clip from if....)
Toffeemanstan@reddit
Love the Ealing comedies, had a quality other comedy films of the time didnt seem to have.
AlessaDark@reddit
And if you know Ebeneezer Goode, you’ve heard a bit from O Lucky Man!

Enduring Love. I caught this film late one night and stayed up to watch it. I dont know if it was because I was really tired when I watched it but it made me so uncomfortable and I’ve never been able to watch it again. Certainly never been in a hot air balloon that’s for sure.
kilgore_trout1@reddit
Two come to mind for me and weirdly both about the army, although each of them very different films...
71 - A British soldier ends up on his own in a very nationalist part of Belfast, incredibly tense and stressful to watch but a really interesting window into some of the darkest parts of modern British and Irish history.
Kajaki - a band of British soldiers accidently finds itself in a minefield in Afghanisaton. Based on a true story and although most of the action takes place pretty much in just one place and unbelievably tense watch.
Both were mega stressful to watch but really excellently done, I'd 100% recommend both films.
Toffeemanstan@reddit
Both quality films that will test.your nerves.
DrunkenMonk-1@reddit
71 was a good movie

I hesitated writing that. Very well known film where I'm from but I'm a brass bander who lives in Barnsley - so very much who the film was made for! So wasn't sure how well known it was outside that demographic.
Toffeemanstan@reddit
Was filmed up the road from me. Tried showing it to a few English speaking Mexicans when I worked over there and they couldnt understand a word they were saying.
nffc_simon@reddit
We had it on video and absolutely loved it (still do).
My brother and I watched it loads when we were teens. I think I was 13 or 14 when it came out. Initially loved it as a bloody good comedy, but as I matured a bit it taught me a lot about the pit communities and the politics of the time. I grew up in the rural East Midlands where farming was the game, so knew little about it at the time. Real eye opener.
I recently showed it to my son. He’s now a fan too.
Eyupmeduck1989@reddit
It’s a classic in my family (and omg Pete Postlethwaite is amazing in it) but so many people have never heard of it!

Paperhouse (1988)
Great little movie from the late 80s. Really unique and poignant.
Paperhouse is a 1988 British dark fantasy film directed by Bernard Rose. It was based on the 1958 novel Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr. The film stars Ben Cross, Glenne Headly and Gemma Jones.

Theres a couple of churches ive been past that are similar to the paper house and it always gives me a strange feeling looking at them.

I cant take the villains seriously
They are the most pathetic, inept, incompetant drug dealers. How can i consider them a threat to anyone?
Paddy considine character belittles himself even threatening them
electric_head_2000@reddit
Well thats perhaps the point - these shit inept scumbags commited an absolute atrocity and seemingly got away with it to continue happily in their shit inept lifes. It's naw meant to be Scarface or have end of level gangster bosses mate
CranberryWizard@reddit
Oh the film definately tries to drive that, but i feel it doesnt achiece that goal. The mood seems to shift between this gang are hard guys to be feared, to jokes, and cant pick a lane. But all sides come off as a little ..m pathetic imho
It doesnt help i come from a village just like that and ran away as soon as i could. My personal experiences may make me biased here

FlibV1@reddit
+2 for Kill List.
Found it deeply unsettling in ways few movies have managed to match.
mdmnl@reddit
It's a "me problem", never a comment on the films themselves, but I struggle with suspension of disbelief when it's a big movie with scenes in the U.K. I can believe Jake Gyllenhaal can parachute into a stealth bomber over Bora Bora and all that shit, but when Hugh Jackman is pursued by assassins past a Superdrug it drags me out of it. I know that's pure tosh.
Kill List did the opposite - the recognisable lock-ups, houses and chain hotels and everything made it so much more insidious and unsettling.
Sad-Wrap6555@reddit
some movies can pull it off if the editing is up to snuff
I watched car chase scene in an iranian movie called Tehran and only got this slight hunch it was at least partly filmed in uk - took second viewing of the scene before penny dropped it was central glasgow ...where i spend most of each day working next to some of the actual streets thats in the chase
mdmnl@reddit
I don't even mind the "Glasgow for Gotham/NY/Philly" trend, especially since half the movies I thought were NY were probably Vancouver anyway. But when they expect me to believe an international cabal of spies is operating within spitting distance of Greggs, it seems safer somehow.
Sad-Wrap6555@reddit
well we did have our own secret chinese police station in the Loon Fung in sauchiehall street, so maybe theres something near that greggs after all 😁
mdmnl@reddit
Indeed! I always liked the food there - the secret ingredient was espionage, apparently
Sad-Wrap6555@reddit
each to his own - snails were never my thing 😁
FlibV1@reddit
Especially when they've glued a Super drug sign over an Eastern European shop front and pretended it's in Britain.
The part in Kill List where they're at the dinner table and it's all a bit awkward and then the lady gets up to go to the loo (no spoilers) freeeeeaaaaked me the fuck out and I can't entirely place why.
Maybe it's the awkward relatable normality suddenly being subverted, it really got to me.

This is the one. Most people know Ben Wheatley or one of his films at least. Most people know of folk horror, and Witchfinder General and Reece Shearsmith and his love of folk horror. Just whack them all together with a heroic dose of shrooms and a small budget and you get a modern classic.

Priest - a 1994 film starring Linus Roache, of Law & Order and My Dad's Ken Barlow fame, and Robert Carlyle. Made by the Cracker pairing of Antonia Bird and Jimmy McGovern. It's about a young Catholic priest who starts falling for another man and the subsequent trauma/crisis of faith that you'd expect. Sounds like a bit of a cliche now, but it wasn't at the time and it was well worth watching.

The Party (2019 I think.) One of Bruno Ganz's last film roles I believe. Cillian Murphy says one line in particular and I was dying over the delivery.

Rye Lane is a modern classic for romcoms imo. It's got David Jonsson from Alien Romulus and even in a romcom you can tell he's got serious chops.

The Shout - Alan Bates and Susannah York, remarkable film that's almost forgotten set in Devon.
The Reckoning, before Get Carter there was this film, hugely underestimated. The scene where he warns a salesman that Carlisle people will rip him apart cracked me up.

This one is legit a film no one would have heard of:
Cop on the Edge IX: Prelude to Justice
It was filmed by a group of friends in Newport, south Wales in the 90s and it actually got a limited cinema release, I believe.
It is available on YouTube, and it is a classic.
