I get 32 days a year plus bank holidays on top, I’ve been told this is very generous. How does yours compare?

30 days, plus a privilege day for the kings birthday, plus 8 bank holidays and can bag up to 28 days of flexi leave but that doesn't really count as I have to work the hours at some point.

It does count because most jobs you need to work to get the job done, not just do your hours. I operated a project in sudo puplic sector where staff kept telling me abiut them working late every night. Realised why the they just didn't show up on Fridays as they had 'worked their hours'

It’s based on weeks off, so a full time worker doing a 4 day 10 hour shift pattern would just need 23 days. So if only half the bank holidays fell on their shifts that would be compliant.
I don’t know OP’s situation but I know some full time workers that work 10-16 hour shifts on fewer average days per week but still get the same number of weeks off.
So OP is either working part time, full time but fewer days per week average over the year, or their employer is doing something interesting.

I turned down a job the day before starting because they offered me 20 days, wouldn't negotiate. I'd spent the previous 7 years building and negotiating my time to to 25 days at my previous job.
Then along comes my current job, literally the day before I was supposed to start with the 20 day people, offering 27 days with the ability to purchase up to 3 more. So I went with it!
It was so demoralising to find myself going backwards in terms of holidays.

My boss, of course takes about 6 weeks plus 3-4 long weekends and expects us to work several Saturdays and even some bank holidays. I swear he'd make us work at Christmas if he thought he could get away with it

I work for an American company which operates in the UK, in turn having to abide by UK employment law. It's safe to say our American colleagues are very jealous of the UK office annual leave entitlement.
They get public holidays and 1 day annual leave per year of service maxing out at 5 days. It's dreadful!
Each summer I take 2 weeks off and each Christmas I'm off for 3 weeks. They hate it 😂

I get 33 days AL + 1 extra day + bank holidays = ~42 days (~8.5 weeks).
6 months full pay then 6 months half pay on sick, 1 paid volunteer day, hybrid (60% office), and I’ve compressed my 37 hour week into Tue–Fri so I get every Monday off now. On top of that, we can request paid special leave that doesn't fall into sick or annual leave which is at managers discretion - I've been approved twice, no questions asked. Tbh, I have flexibility anyway.
Would be interested to know the hours they are expected to work, compared to here?!

Not a lot and even those two aren’t massively different. You can own a gun here in the UK, it’s just not a right and heavily regulated (rightly so). I also think that, for all intents and purposes, speech is equally free between the two countries. In practice, there are edge cases that would be protected in the US but they’re usually egregiously offensive or hateful. Average people are unaffected by this 1% increase in “freedom”.

I would argue that it doesn’t make up for it at all. If you tripled my salary I wouldn’t take a job with one day annual leave per year. Your increased salary is also going to be partially eaten up by Health Insurance, my cousin now pays nearly a grand a month now. Then you also have the scourge that is ‘At Will Employment’.

my ex used to work for abercrombie and fitch after getting a position out of uni, and we planned to move out there. money was great, and wild lifestyle, but you got 10 days leave a year between sick leave and vacation, and it was a most encouraged not to take your full allowance.

I dont have this perk in my current job, but had it with a previous employer and it is a nice to have in your contract, knowing that if something happens you are covered without fear of losing your job.
But what I found with my old employer that, this policy was abused. Some people would do the 6 months and then return for 4 weeks and then the 6 month counter reset and they got themselves signed off again for 6 months. I'm not sure if that is still in place now with that employer.

We don't pay property tax on the houses we own. Taxes come out of our wages automatically, if you're self employed they would allow you to pay in affordable instalments, if you refuse completely they can take money directly from your bank account, appointment bailiffs to seize goods, as a last resort they might get a charging order against your property, but don't necessarily enforce the sale of the property and would just recoup the money when you eventually sell it or die and it gets sold to pay for it, only in extreme cases and rarely would they force the sale of your property.

No tax on expensive properties either, though we do have council tax and there are bands so the bigger the property the more council tax you pay. Also have stamp duty which is a tax the buyer pays when purchasing the property. Pension income is taxed at the same rate as income from wages, but when we pay into a pension the amount is taken from our wages before tax so we don't pay tax on those earnings initially.

I recently started working for a company in the UK, and asked the boss( the owner) to explain the bank holidays, Paid time off etc... He looked at me a bit odd. Then I explained how it worked in the US. A couple of weeks later my query came up in another conversation with a couple of other higher ups in the company. My boss mentioned that he looked it up because he didn't believe that companies in the US aren't required to give paid days off. Everyone else couldn't believe it either. I get a total of 32 I think, but the company closes for a week at Christmas , so we have to take a few days then, although Christmas day, new years day and boxing day are considered to be paid holidays, so, we take 5 days but end up being off for about 8, I think. Today is a bank holiday...getting paid for not being at work, no calls asking/telling me I need to come in because something has gone wrong, no veiled threats, no hassles. One for the flip side though..... No requirement for time and a half here, so overtime is paid at a regular rate....I volunteered to work an extra shift, and found this out the hard way......oh well. No more volunteering for extra shifts unless I'm guaranteed time and a half.... yes, I can actually tell my employer that, and they can make that determination.

Regarding extra pay, I've had both Time and a half and double time from UK employers before, but by far the most common form of compensation (because it doesn't impact payroll, I suspect) is Time-off-in-lieu (TOIL)
So you work an extra 6 hours, you get 6 hours off on another day.

Same, I was working for a place that would ask us to do some client work on weekends periodically. It was always framed as "this is completely voluntary but if you do it, you get time and a half"
So there was always someone willing.
They then switched it to TOIL and suddenly the supply of willing volunteers vanished. The bosses couldn't understand it "but it's the same thing", and people were blunt, we want money, not time.

For the rest I led (and currently lead) teams of between 10 & 20 colleagues based in US, so I’ve been pretty familiar with the benefits packages for those organisations.
There is a difference between legal minimums and what organisations have to offer in order to attract and retain talent. That creates a big imbalance especially for low/semi skilled workers.

I work in a tech job in the UK and get 24 + banks (10) + 5 fixed extra days = 39. And I'm doing pretty well compared to most.
The parental leave is hard to tell, but depends on all sorts of factors of if it's paid or not and if it's for women/men/both etc. can you take off longer than the paid chunk etc.

Yeah its truly insane. Especially if you have intelligence and ambition the US can be amazing. My husband and I pulled ourselves from working/lower middle class in the UK with a trajectory to be poor renters forever to now upper middle with a comfortable life within 5 years.
In addition I had stage 0 breast cancer found and treated for 0 dollars from the best harvard Dr's that would have been absolutely missed in the UK (how do I know? I have many consultant dr friends who told me this would have been missed).

I had a report in the US who was expecting and was pretty stoic about the 6 weeks off, thought it was normal. She wanted to do a bit extra through FMLA or whatever it's called and our US HR got snippy with me as noone in the whole US org had ever taken more than 4 weeks before. This was an old company operating for decades. Blew my mind. I ensured she was able to take what she was entitled to and then between ourselves let's just say we weren't in touch much for the 6 weeks after that. Even then I felt guilty at just 12 weeks off.

I work for a US company and get unlimited annual leave in my contract which is a 'perk' over there... My US colleagues are still rarely off (maybe 3 weeks a year max for some of them) and I'm taking 6-7 weeks a year. I was very clear when I started that at my previous roles I've always maxed out annual leave purchases (typically 4-5 weeks + 2 weeks purchased) which they were fine with. With bank holidays it's about 40 days a year I take but no one has said anything and I don't even have to record it.
They do get a benefit though as I'm much more likely to answer an email or hop on a call on a holiday day (e.g if we're going out later in the day) as it's not taking away from 'my time' - but it's not expected.

Fixed holidays, 1 week at Easter, 2 weeks in July and 2 weeks at Christmas/new year, plus all bank holidays. Usually works out to 28-29 days per calendar year.
Any other time off is unpaid, sick pay is SSP (which is thankfully now day 1 instead of day 4)
Employer can say no to requests for time off for medical appointments and/or holidays - for example if I wanted to book a holiday while the workplace was closed but the flight left 1 day before closure they can say no. Generally they haven’t said no to me for time off for hospital appointments, as long as I make the time up (I work part time so flexibly can do this however it does take a lot out of me because my hospital appointments usually involve a 1-3 hour round trip depending on traffic)
It honestly really sucks, I’d rather take time off as and when I need it because holidays during closures are very expensive.

Not where I previously worked. Well it was better by £1 per hr for negular staff until the one and only pay rise in 4 years which then put day shift just 50p an hr behind the night shift 😂. Current job I took an 11k total pay hit to come here as a normal worker on days. Was due to get a 3k pay bump after being here for 6 months but it ended up being 4k thanks to a pay rise in April. So now I’m 6k behind where I was on nights in my previous job.
We also now get paid as of march an extra £100 per month to park in a car park that’s a 15 min walk from work which gets me back another 1.2k per year. And sadly within the next couple of months we are being put on rotating 6-2, 2-10 shifts which puts me back on what I was on in the previous job as a night shift supervisor.
With the extra benefits this job has such as great pension, annual leave, private healthcare etc I’m glad I made the move. Just holding out for those 4on4 off shifts in a years time now 😂

The UK minimum entitlement is 5.6 weeks a year, and that is based on days worked per week, so the entitlement changes for people who work shifts that aren't 5 day weeks or people who work part time.
Someone working 5 days a week is entitled to 28 days per year, 5 x 5.6 = 28.
When you work 4 on 4 off, you work an average of 3.5 days a week, 3.5 x 5.6 = 19.6.
For some part time workers with irregular hours/days that change each week, holiday entitlement is calculated on hours worked within a time frame, that time frame could be weeks or months, and the amount of holiday they are entitled to can change throughout the year.
Employers can include bank holidays when calculating annual leave entitlement.

My company has unlimited holiday. It's basically done on an honour system so people's holidays aren't counted or capped, but it's assumed that people won't take the piss with their requests.
On average people tend to take 30-35 days a year plus bank holidays on top. We also have company socials (group outings) and wellness days (where you go out for the day with 1 other employee, to a spa, or theme park, or wherever you want, paid for by the company ofc) and those don't count towards your annual leave either.
So yes I would say it promotes a healthy lifestyle/work-life balance.

It's not literally unlimited - it's not like you can take half the year off. Your requests still need to be approved by the manager. It just means there's no strict set number of days you are allowed to request off.

They assess you on output over hours. If you can deliver with more days off then either the task is too easy or you can handle more work.
So the job scope changes. It's a short term gain with longer term impact.
Then again it could be a good company and my pessimism could be unwarranted.

I've done this for a short amount of time too. Off the top of my head I've worked in the USA, Poland and Finland for at least a week each. I've known people go and work abroad for longer periods of time for family reasons but yeah, you do have to notify HR about what you're doing so people can check there aren't unexpected tax complications. You also need to be clear about the hours you're working/not working in your calendar, especially if there's a bigger time zone difference with the UK.

I guess the limiting factor is that you still have to get your job done; I have a certain portfolio of client work that I need to deliver and no one is going to cover it for me while I'm on holiday. So if I take so many days off that I'm falling behind on output, eventually someone will notice and mark me down on performance, which is probably the point at which they start showing an interest in how many days I'm taking off. So long as you don't take the piss and don't let other people down, no one really seems to care what I do and I'm at a level where I don't have to ask anyone to authorise my holiday in advance.
If I wanted to take an extended amount of holiday in one go, I think that's the point I'd need to ask permission because my work would need covering. But I've seen other people take 6 - 8 weeks off in one go for their wedding, for example, so it would be possible if I had a good reason.

They do it so there doesn't need to be a holiday pay accrual on the books as technically noone is building up any entitlement. If you're a big group over a lot of sites that one accrual fairly adds up. Especially if people aren't taking all they're entitled to (happens in my industry). So if you turn it to unlimited in the countries where it's allowed your books get a one time boost if you can release the accrual then there's one less thing to audit.

I used to get 30 days holiday. Then we got bought out by a bigger company that moved us to “unlimited leave”. Now I take 20-25 days a year as it’s all I can manage.
The leave is still signed off by your manager - so they can say no if they think you’re taking too much or aren’t able to handle your workload effectively.
There’s no holiday cover for most roles - so you cover the time off by working extra the week before or after you go.
I manage a team so I made it clear I will provide cover for their workload for 20 days a year (plus bank holidays) - and then if they want to take anything over that it’s on the basis they can manage it without workload cuts.
Essentially, it’s a BS policy for most people - you’re scrutinised if you take advantage of it and if you take the bare minimum, the business lauds it over you that you could be taking this if you managed your time better.
Some people take the piss of course, and they are resented by those who feel they are not able to have as many days. And, my company makes regular rounds of redundancies so no doubt that’s taken into account.
In my experience unlimited leave should be viewed as just being there if you need it. So plan in your regular 4 or 5 weeks, and if something comes up like a child care issue or house move then use it then. Or if you get married and want a month’s honeymoon you could still have some time off at other points that year. But in general, don’t expect to be taking 6-8 weeks a year without scrutiny.

I think it depends on the company and also the nature of the work. I admit I'm in quite a fortunate position as I've worked in my industry for about 20 years, so can often get the volume of work that's assigned to me done more quickly than someone earlier in their career might, and then probably don't have to put so many hours in before/after holiday to stay on top of things. Not having a set limit of days has definitely made it easier for me to say "yes" more often to long weekends, family events etc that require one or two days off work and which I would previously have had to say "no" to when I had a fixed allowance.

I work flexi time which people think is great. But the reality is that this works in the favour of the slow worker.
If you arw an efficient worker and do your quota quickly and accurately, you arw then expected to do more than someone who is slow or less accurate. Not to much of a problem.
However when you then consider that if you do your work quickly and well after a period of time you realise you are being taken advantage of and you get bored. So you leave early because you can. You start getting a flexi deficit because you can not bear being there longer than you have to.
Meanwhile the slower workers (who you have spent most of your day having to help) arw working longer hours in order to get their quota finished. They then find themselves with time to spare and regularly take extra days leave with the flexi they have built up.
So it's actually a silly system that rewards poor performance

The idea is to swap salary for more hours, at the same calculated cost of “a days work”. Like 5% less work for 5% less gross salary in the year. The benefit is that calculated cost is deducted from your gross salary and not your net, so you don’t lose as much take-home pay. You don’t make profit on it, if that’s what you’re saying.

32 days plus bank holidays is definitely on the higher end, especially depending on the country.
In a lot of places, it’s more like 20–25 days plus public holidays. For example, in the UK 20–25 days + bank holidays is pretty standard, while in parts of Europe (like France or the Nordics) 25–30 days isn’t unusual. Once you get into the 30+ range before bank holidays, you’re in a pretty generous setup.
Also worth noting that it often scales with seniority, industry, or public vs private sector. Tech, government jobs, and some European companies tend to offer more, while others stick closer to the legal minimum.
So yeah, 32 + bank holidays is objectively very solid. Not unheard of, but definitely above average!
I’m working in Belgium and I get 20 days of paid leave (based on what I worked the year before). On top of that, with a 40-hour work week, I build up around 12 extra ADV days (reduction of working time). And if a public holiday falls on a weekend, we usually get to take it back on another day.

I'm not OP but can (and do) buy holiday at my work. It's essentially a salary sacrifice scheme as you suggest. You agree to give up a proportional amount of your annual wage to get extra time off. At my place we can also "sell" holiday which works in the exact opposite fashion.
Because the money comes out of your pre-tax earnings, buying holiday is most useful if you are just over the bar for a higher tax bracket. Say for example it would cost you £1k of earnings to buy holiday, but those earnings were going to be taxed at 50%, you only really lose £500.
A more sensible thing to do would be to contribute more to my pension but my base holiday allowance isn't great and those extra days are what makes life bearable!

I also get 3 days because our company doesn't recognize the majority of bank holidays, due to the nature of the work.
Then, of the three bank holidays they do recognise (Christmas Day/Boxing Day/New Years day), there's a weird rule. Those days are called "guaranteed annual leave" (GDA) days where if you're rostered to work you can just say you're not coming in. If you do work, or opt to take overtime, it's seen as sort of selling your GDA to the company, as there's a pay incentive for working on these days. However, if you're not rostered and don't take overtime on these days, the company treats it as you weren't able to take or "sell" (for the uplift in pay) your GDA day off, so you get a day in lieu for each of those the following year.
I also get 1 day for being First Aid trained.
So in total I can have between 36 and 39 days of annual leave in a single year.

Technically there is no hard limit at my job. It's called "unlimited" but it isnt truly unlimited, it's not like you can just take half the year off. It basically just means they don't put a strict cap on it, and if you request to take annual leave, they're probably going to approve it as long as it's reasonable. When I first moved to the UK from America I had never had a day off work (I was 22, been working since I was 18) and when my job here told me I hadn't chosen my spring annual leave week and I had to do so ASAP I was absolutely baffled.
I took it the following week because I had no plans anyway and when I returned to work I genuinely couldn't remember how to do half of my work tasks, it was so weird. I'd been working there for four months.

Where I work now - a US technology company - they have an "open vacation policy" (no set number of days per year).There is no minimum or maximum, but they encourage you to take at least 25 days of time off per year. In reality most people take more.

I have "unlimited". Obviously it's not actually unlimited. It's more like take whatever you want as long as you're not taking the piss. Last year I took 37 days, which included bank holidays.
The nice thing is being able to take a "normal" amount, plus an extra day here and there without anyone batting an eye. So if I've already taken 30 days then suddenly need a day off for some reason, it's not a problem at all. I just take it.

Before retirement I got 6 weeks + bank holidays + half day for Maundy Thursday (the day before Good Friday). Also was on 24 hour call out and any call outs that fell on a Bank Holiday you had a choice to claim 2.5 x the pay rate or 1.5 x and a day off in lieu.
We were also allowed 2 weeks sick leave which some would take 'to use it up' even went they weren't sick. I can honestly say I never took a day off sick unless I was sick.

Im in a very lucky position, we are closed for Christmas(2w) and 1w in summer plus unlimited holidays, bank holidays, fully paid sickness and mental health breaks(although a pattern would trigger OH). From what I ve noticed, we take on average 2months off in the year. Sometimes I take a 3-4 weeks off in the summer and no problem as long as I do give enough notice. The only thing we have to be careful is capacity planning(someone has to work). we're a small company.

If we buy everything, we get 45 days off a year, which is more or less 11 weeks off (equivalent of 56 days AL + BH on a 5 day week).
Charity days kind of are also holidays tbh, you can give blood and have the day off. Clean out your home and give stuff to a charity shop. Go on a sponsored walk (I do a 5k walk for charity usually). They just want a receipt for whatever you do. Social days are 2 days off a year to do something with your team, so depends if you like them or not! Company days are a day off around the founding anniversary & a day off around Christmas. Training days are a day off to complete some external thing, usually I just go to a short hour online seminar or something.

It used to be, I think, 15 days at starting, rising to 30 days after x number of years - I forget, but it was a lot of qualifying time. The unions liked to drive that down lol. Plus bank holidays, Queen (now King)’s Birthday, plus ‘unofficial’ half-days for Xmas shopping (this was in the days when CS offices were all over the place and not able to access good public transport, so local managers were allowing a half-day in December… I well remember going to a sub-office years later who were still doing this, despite being 5 minutes walk from the local shopping. You’d think I was the second coming from hell, the reaction I got! Director quite rightly kicked them and the union in the arse.)
I live in the US now and am completely gobsmacked at how US companies treat their people. My US working wife gets little ‘Paid Time Off’ as it is known here and her company would rather she didn’t take it. As she’s older and very experienced she doesn’t give two hoots and takes whatever she’s allowed to by their rules; it would cut their nose off to spite their face and they know it

years ago a small local firm near me did 3 months working followed by a month off, the month off pay was based on the average of the three months before .
everyone who worked their loved it they used to get from the middle of December until the middle of Jan off every year the biggest problem was you couldn't choose when you had your holidays and missed out on bank holidays
you also didn't really get over time pay but it made your holiday pay bigger
the company got bought out and changed all the shifts and eventually it closed down but the people who worked their loved it

OK, I'll try and explain...I get 24 days, but I work 4 on-4 off, 12 hour shifts, so if I book 4 days off I get the 2 off-shifts either side, so I get 12 days off.
From this 24 days off, I can book 6 chunks of 4 days that give me 12 days off each, or a double chunk of 8 days that gives me 20 days off!
Working 4 on-4 off, I only technically work 6 months of the year anyway! 🤗😀
