People of the UK what's your vice in life?.
Posted by Various_Extreme_8773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 336 comments
I have never really been a big drinker, a few pints on a Friday or Saturday used to be enough for me. But not had a pint since covid.
I don't smoke, but my vice is gambling.
I actually took time to look at my bank statements going back 25 years. It doesn't seem a lot at the time, but I have have lost 264k in them years. Lol. I could of purchased a better home.
But I suppose we all have one vice, what's yours?.
TapeDeckSlick@reddit
Mate gambling problems are so rife, I genuinely think gambling adverts should be banned all together.
r0bbyr0b2@reddit
It’s mad that it’s on the radio at 8am on the school run, all online, tv ads, sponsored by “celebs” etc etc.
Just treat it like tobacco and ban all adverts. But they will never do it as the gov earns good tax month out of fleecing the poor and financially vulnerable.
Glittered_Fingers@reddit
Kids are actively marketed to with a view of encouaging gambling habits, if you ask me. There's been a few examples that go back a long time (the dopamine hit of completing Panini sticker sets, or getting a 'shiny', for example) but generally, kids were not gambling on what they wanted to collect. It's everywhere now. Blind boxes. Mini Brands. Lego Minifigures. On and on and on... literally half of the pocket money options are risk/reward now. It's really gross, and I worry how we're wiring their brains, honestly.
Rainbvw@reddit
Yeah I've noticed this with one of my kids. We can go into Smyths and out of everything in that shop, the things she'll fixate on LOL Surprise and all the similar toys, where it's a box/ball and it's a surprise what's in there. Scares me to death that she'll happily throw birthday money at stuff like that and when I ask "are you sure? You don't even know what you're getting?", that's precisely why she wants it.
Morganx27@reddit
Not to mention video games. Slots, spinning wheels, loot boxes etc. all for real money.
Glittered_Fingers@reddit
Oh, you're spot on! Through screens it's even more insidious!
hamstertoybox@reddit
It pisses me off that I have to prove my age to snoop on random Redditors, but my kids are constantly exposed to gambling ads with no regulation.
r0bbyr0b2@reddit
Ha yes very good point.
GhoolsFold@reddit
Exactly!
Footner@reddit
I will never forget when champagne was the controversy at the fa cup and the radio presenter I forget his name was ranting how it’s disgusting and alcohol has no place in the game because of addicts etc.
I turned on the tv later that day and he was on a gambling advert
Bloody hypocrite
Ok-Ship812@reddit
It’s a comparatively new thing, the ads that is. In the 70’s and 80’s there were casinos, slot parlours and bookies in the UK and none of them could advertise.
The gambling Commisson’s view was that there was a latent unstimulated demand for gambling products in the country and they would legalise just enough supply.
Boy that’s changed
dowling543333@reddit
I know we have children's social media and other problems we have to tackle too, but restricting these disgusting gambling companies should be priority 1.
Every UK high street is totally overtaken by gambling shops. It's on apps too. Horrible.
appletinicyclone@reddit
When cost of living gets bad, gambling popularity goes up
Pieboy8@reddit
For reasons I won't go into, I get to look at hundreds of bank statements each week... You are not wrong. Gambling, to the extent it's problematic is at epidemic levels. Especially prevelent in the lower classes, those who can least afford it. It's tragic to see.
ThrobbingGristle@reddit
If you take this approach then you also need to ban:
Smoking and vaping 95% of food in every supermarket Extreme sports Alcohol
Personally, I’m a “live and let live” coupled with “take personal responsibility for yourself and don’t rely on a nanny state”
Of course, we’re all different, but in general I’m against “banning and taxing fun”.
ruu_throwaway@reddit
Gambling adverts! Lean to read
Scared-Room-9962@reddit
What if stands up straight?
RoboTon78@reddit
That's an alternative point of view.
External-Praline-451@reddit
They said ban gambling ads - not banning gambling. Smoking ads are banned, alcohol ones are restricted, yet gambling ads are everywhere and relentless.
TapeDeckSlick@reddit
I never said ban gambling lmao
Lost-Explanation1215@reddit
The problem is the government and media are intertwined in this.
The government gets a fortune in tax revenue and also lobbying and also the media gets a fortune in adverts.
Fattydog@reddit
The government used to get hundreds of millions from tobacco taxes - there just needs to be the will to put a stop to it.
greentricky@reddit
But it also cost them a fortune on the NHS, gambling doesn't have the same cost burden to government
Hour-Estate-2962@reddit
I'd imagine it does have some cost burden. Gambling causes people to turn to crime, fall into debt, ruins families, destroys mental health etc. it's probably harder to track than the effects of smoking but there will be a financial cost to society.
sparkline1234567@reddit
The government no longer spends money to prevent any of that 🥲
Hour-Estate-2962@reddit
Very true! They do bear the cost of some of it when it goes wrong though in policing, benefits, social care for kids affected by gambling, (minimal) mental health support, unemployment etc.
Fattydog@reddit
Tobacco tax earns around £7.5bn a year, and gambling tax around £3.5bn.
Tobacco costs the NHS £3bn a year. The economic burden of gambling is £1.4bn.
Tobacco is therefore a much higher net earner than gambling, despite advertising being banned.
sparkline1234567@reddit
What is the economic burden of gambling? Sure that's a private burden, not a state one, whereas tobacco related health problems are a state problem.
pjkm123987@reddit
no it shouldn't, people who gamble are self proclaimed idiots who have zero self control or reasoning. Everyone knows gambling makes you lose money, so why do it in the first place. Losing your money on gambling is deserved.

Loud_Fisherman_5878@reddit
That’s a very progressive way to talk about addicitons.
BiggestNige@reddit
Baffles me even more that the majority of TV ads are now the gambling companies advertising Be Gamble Aware etc and how you can put limits on. What better way to flog your product that highlting the negatives.
Outside-Resist4688@reddit
Me trying. They were banned before 1994. They're awful.
ShaftManlike@reddit
And phone apps. It shouldn't be that easy and available
Sparko_Marco@reddit
I was driving home from work one day and had talk sport on, they were talking to someone about gambling addiction and the dangers of gambling and had quite a good discussion on it. Then it went to an ad break and the first ad was a gambling ad, then they come back and the next segment was sponsored by a gambling company. Total hypocrites.
Etheria_system@reddit
Don’t really have one these days. I suppose it’s buying kindle books on the daily deal, but most months that’s the only thing I spend money on and it’s around £30 a month.
Various_Extreme_8773@reddit (OP)
That's a good vice.
Books are great for the mind.
Audible has got me through some dark times.
Etheria_system@reddit
They help me a lot. I’m housebound and disabled, don’t have much of a life but books let me escape and live through someone else for a while. I probably won’t read all the books I’ve bought, but like spending 99p on books I might read just so I have the option to

Same. I'm 40 just come back from a weekend if silliness and pills. I doubt I'll ever change!
JoeTisseo@reddit
That's fucking class mate honestly. Something id be well down for at that age, I'm currently 35 and still yearn for the odd blowout.

Hahaha that's funny.
ThatNegro98@reddit
Weed. I started using it recreactionally. Got diagnosed with adhd at uni, found I could focus a lot better if I was a little high, so smoked a little when I was teyna do work. But still smoked recreationally (quite heavily) outside of doing uni work.
Finished uni, cut down a lot on how much I smoke. But now I smoke out of habit rather than for my adhd. Sometimes it is for my adhd, but a lot of times it's just cos im finding something to fill my time with. Has hurt my productivity, as weed does nothing to help my lack of motivation/starting a task that stems from my adhd.
CelDidNothingWrong@reddit
So about 220 quid a week for 25 years in a row? Jesus, you planning to cut back at all?
Various_Extreme_8773@reddit (OP)
Yeah. I put on Average 40 a day on but hardly ever win, I think I'm going to bet every other day instead now.
I used to really enjoy it. But now it feels like an inconvenience.
c-e-r-y-s@reddit
That's an addiction, full stop. Ignore everyone saying "thin line, vice, etc etc", this is an addiction. Please look into some help.
Specimen_E-351@reddit
If you don't enjoy it, it's an inconvenience and it costs you a fortune, why not just stop entirely?
Various_Extreme_8773@reddit (OP)
I don't now when bored. It's hard to explain.
Hardie1247@reddit
Don't take this the wrong way, but maybe you need a hobby you can actively participate in? It sounds like you don't actually enjoy watching football, so you make up for that with the thrill of a win/loss potential for yourself. If it's 40 pounds a day roughly for 25 years, that's hundreds of thousands. That kind of money could allow you to retire much sooner, get a nicer house/cars, premium hobby equipment for pretty much anything you want to start up, etc. Doesn't make sense to spend that money on something that truly doesn't make you happy, but instead just gives you a cheap thrill until your next "hit".
Specimen_E-351@reddit
Well, it's addiction.
Push-the-pink-button@reddit
Mate you could have a banging drug addiction for that money! Or just imagine you'd put that into your pension instead.
blahehblah@reddit
You could be banging a decent hooker for 1k/month
toady89@reddit
You must genuinely enjoy it if adding that up hasn't motivated you towards at least thinking about stopping altogether. If it was me I'd be daydreaming about what else I could be spending it on that has longer term enjoyment (probably a holiday every month).
ScottishJoeExotic@reddit
To be honest with you pal with those numbers it sounds more like an addiction than a vice. Gamcare can help.
AutomaticSuccotash51@reddit
The line is very fine between addiction and vice, but I feel like gambling is one of those ones which almost always end up as an addiction
niqueG@reddit
Some banks can block gambling transactions for you. Might be a good idea to chat to them to see what they can do to support you.
CelDidNothingWrong@reddit
maybe look into some therapy or treatment to help quit? You can clearly afford it if you’ve been happy to lose 40 quid a day, every single day of your adult life lol
ASpookyBitch@reddit
Cheese.
And now I have to cut back on that due to my cholesterol.
I don’t drink, smoke, vape, any drugs. I don’t gamble, or even eat a lot of sugar, less now that all the good stuff has been messed with due to shrinkflation and cost cutting…
Cheese was my one thing.
Adventurous-Idea1473@reddit
drinking. which is not a good one because it makes you fat, lazy and fucks with your brain.
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
It's sad to read this. I don't drink at all or ever, but I am sure alcoholism runs in my family genes or something. It's three people in my family I have now known to die from alcoholism, one who was barely 40. This shit breaks you if you're outside looking in, and it isn't usually a nice way to go out either.

Sugar I quit drinking, I quit smoking but none were as hard to give up as sugar is proving. Doesn’t help that most artificial sweeteners make me feel sick.
hamstertoybox@reddit
Sugar is my vice, but I’m not even going to consider cutting down. Life’s too short and I’m pretty healthy otherwise.
TRFKTA@reddit
I quit sugar in about 4-5 days.
I used to be a Diet Coke fiend (yes, yes, I know) and used to drink 3-4 cans a day minimum. In the end I figured that it was the carbonation I liked, not the taste so I swapped the Diet Coke for fizzy water.
The first few days were pretty tough but once I hit day 4-5 I had 0 cravings whatsoever.
It also helps that I operate on the basis of ‘if I don’t buy it during my grocery shopping I can’t eat it’
These days I mainly drink black coffee.
lavender_cookie_@reddit
I also quit drugs, alcohol and smoking but can't quit sweet treats 😅😭

The garden.
I’ve spent stupid money on my garden and spend my weekends going for breakfast at local nurseries and buying more plants I don’t have space for.
This year I also took on an allotment and spent stupid money on getting that ready for the growing season. Naturally, I now have far too many seeds that I have a filing system for.
Then on here, I see some people meeting up with their old mates to take some pills and go to raves in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. I however, will be seeing the Monty Don on Friday, for A Journey Through British Gardens.

Tbf, I do come back round to some every now and again and do one off things with them or use them for other purposes. I have enough art supplies to start a small school and many niche books on random courses. About to try making cheese next.
newtonbase@reddit
I need a list.
I've always been a bit obsessive when I start a hobby but as I get older I'm a little calmer and the hobbies last longer.

Honestly you don't need to want to quit. I had given up quitting when someone told me to book an Allen Carr session. He told me to book it months ahead to take pressure off and then when it came along I'd have to go as it was like 400 quid. I was hungover on the day and it was the last thing I could be arsed with.
Allen Carr teaches you not to want it. That was like a decade ago and I've had some truly big benders since and never been tempted because I'm not holding onto some secret craving. You just don't fancy it. Haven't had a fag or nicotine gum since that day
stevoknevo70@reddit
That's exactly it, you've got to be ready and motivated to stop to be able to -the Transtheoretical model of behaviour change (Prochaska & Di Clemente) lays out the stages of change really well should you ever begin to feel you need to quit.
The thing about vaping is you will never get a liquid that tastes exactly like what you smoke, but also people think it's only the nicotine part of smoking you're addicted to, and vaping replaces the nicotine part easily, it's the many other things in smoking like tars/oil/volatile compounds that the body is so used to/craves that vaping can't replace, and that is what people struggle with when trying to swap.

Well it was, I'm recovering now. Not to belittle your addiction, but of the tens of thousands I've spent on drink id rather have spent it gambling. At least then I might have got something out of it.
All I got was crippling anxiety, fat, broke, alone and the the shits for 15 years.
Nowadays my vice is nicotine, quit cigarettes years ago but the vape has a hold on me. I know I should quit but they way I see it, I've gone from 2+ litres of vodka a day with cigarettes to a vape and green tea all day.
So its not perfect but its so much better than it was.

Mostly beers, a few beers with friends on a Friday with friends, maybe a couple in the house too over the weekend. Love nothing more than visiting a new place and popping into a new pub.
Occasionally have a big blow out in the city centre. Although it's more like once a year.
I used to be partial to a drunk ciggy in the past, but never developed an addiction, price and smell is off putting enough.
Never really got into gambling, always felt like a waste of money. Even playing games and bandits, I know people will play poker and throw in £20 and see it as the price of the entertainment but I look at it and think I'd rather have gone to the pub with that money.
Shout out to video games, I mostly play the same few games these days but price to entertainment time is through the roof. Hundreds of hours of entertainment for comparatively little cost.
neverend1ngcircles@reddit
Yeah, gambling as well, tbh I'm a bit of a degen of it but usually I self exclude or take breaks if things go particularly badly and have deposit limits set up.
Drinking as well but more because I enjoy drinking pints and trying different beers, I suppose getting pissed is to an extent a byproduct as I do get a bit carried away lol.
cwatt69@reddit
Love how the gambling companies have to advertise about their gambling tools, setting time limits, etc. They couldn't give an Eartha Kitt about gambling addiction. Incessant Radio and TV advertisements, football shirt branding should be banned. My friend's 19 year old son came along to our most recent home football match on his own as his friends decided to stay in the pub and watch the horse racing that they were all betting on. That is a sad but reflective snapshot of where we are at the moment.
Hardie1247@reddit
Almost every one of my old friend group from school is now a gambling addict, same with several family members. Radio stations are filled with gambling ads, same with TV, youtube etc. It all needs to be banned, it destroys people and those around them.

The bevvy. But only if I'm bored. I feel like if I took up an evening hobby that required me to go somewhere then I wouldn't even consider a drink. Like if I'm working late, doesn't even cross my mind. But if I've got a day off and I've finished all my odd jobs for the day I'm like right, crack one open.
__sunmoonstars__@reddit
Non alcoholics are pretty good these days! Admittedly I’ve never been one for drinking at home much but I do enjoy having an NA after a tough day and knowing it won’t muck my sleep up.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
Unfortunately N/A seems to be exclusively aimed at beers. I don't like normal beer, so mostly useless for me. And I'll be damned if I spend £15 on a bottle of non alcoholic gin, would probably rather just munch a bag of botanicals.
__sunmoonstars__@reddit
Ahh yea the spirits and wine leave a lot to be desired. I tried Sentia and liked it but it’s SO expensive. I do make some other nicer drinks (like posh squash, tonic or ginger beer) with ice and garnish to also signify the end of a crap/great day. I’m eagerly awaiting an NA dry red but maybe that’s a pipe dream.
newtonbase@reddit
The gym worked for me. I find that if I have a drink it's hard to not have another for a couple of days. I train every 2nd night so I'm either on a gym night or I need to not be hungover on a gym night. I'm now lighter, stronger, healthier looking and my task avoidance has all but vanished.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
I know that's the logical conclusion for me, that'd give me the double whammy of drinking less and getting fitter. Which would also benefit my other hobbies. There's a 24 gym near me, it might be a sign!

Me and my mates would do the same thing on the weekend, Friday was meet at the same pub, have a few pints, get the bags in, stay at the pub til closing time then always go back to my mates house and we'd be there from Friday til Sunday morning just sniffing and listening to tunes.
We did that for YEARS and now drinking and lemo are so intertwined I can't do one without the other.
Probably why I don't really drink anymore, because after a few pints I'll be calling people and a simple night out is now getting £100-200 added on top now.

I did far too much statistics at A Level to consider gambling beyond the odd flutter on the grand national, or $5 on the machines on a cruise ship. I know it should be seen as a 'cost' for entertainment, and not a way to win anything. If you can't enjoy yourself, it's not worth it.

I don't think I have any anymore. I used to drink a lot, like every night from 14 years old. I smoked heavily from when I was 12. I gambled a lot from the age of 15. Then I had kids in my early 30s and stopped it all, over the last 13 years I've probably been drunk 4 or 5 times max, don't smoke, rarely gamble except maybe the Grand National if I remember about it. At the start it was probably because having kids is expensive but I have more disposable income now than I did then but don't feel the needs to do any of that now. I have NEVER understood gambling addictions. I am far too broke for that. And also, if I win say on the scratches or the fruities, I don't buy more, and I can stop. I don't feel anything really. However, a friend of mine is the complete opposite. He has ruined his family life many times because of gambling. Whether it be on the GG's or on the footie.
I always think that his partner should give him a blowie every time he wins, because that would be much cheaper! But I feel for him. Addiction is awful. Last year I was 37 stone. I was 40 stone once at my heaviest because I have an addiction to food. Now I am on Mounjaro, I am down to 25 stone in the past 11 months. The drug broke the addiction, but there is no drug to break an addiction to gambling.
As someone else said, gambling adverts MUST be banned! They banned tobacco, alcohol ads are few and far between, but gambling is VERY destructive. Sorry, but a note saying "Gamble responsibly" is NOT enough. That's a bit like saying to a heroin addict "This can kill you". Warning labels rarely ever work on those already addicted.
