How did Albania manage to lose such massive amounts of its population without even being an EU member?

It looks like some commentors misunderstood your question and thought you were asking why so many Albanians migrated out of the country, not *how* so many of them migrated, i.e. how did so many of them visas and residencies. I think the answer is similar for all non-EU Balkan countries. After the Second World War West Germany underwent a period of economic revival called Wirtschaftswunder. Germany needed a lot of workers to rebuild itself and to satisfy the demand for labor they invited guest workers from Southeast Europe to fulfill that. In fact many countries in Western Europe had their first wave of foreign immigration in this period - Britain received its first immigrants from the West Indies, France from the Maghreb and West Africa, Germany from the Balkans, etc. Those workers eventually made connections with each other and established themselves in their host countries. The heyday of the Balkan criminal underworld was the 70s and 80s. Arkan, a notorious Serbian gangster, was known to have committed petty crimes with his gang all over Western Europe at this time. Then came the Yugoslav Wars in the 90s when people massively applied for asylum. By the 2000s a lot of Balkan people already had hundreds of thousands of family members and businesses abroad who could sponsor them. That's actually the most common way to immigrate to America - having a close family member who sponsors you. It's a domino effect. Albanians have big families so they're able to immigrate in large numbers because of that. There's also special programs like the Westbalkanregelung that makes it easier for people from the West Balkans to find a job in Germany.

Fwiw the Slavic languages are so mutually intelligible that a 16th century German diplomat by the name of Siegmund von Herberstein was able to get around in Moscow with just his Slovene interpreter

Isn't that how they used to do it in Sweden? The young couple moves into the main house and the elderly parents move into a small house somewhere nearby, possibly even on the same plot as the main one?

That's what the term autochthonous literally means lol. Some nationalists took a term out of Greek mythology about people literally arising out of the ground to describe their people

Maybe when we were kids. But when I became an adult I realized I wouldn't be any different. Most Americans practically live a life of luxury, why would they care about some random countries in Eastern Europe? Their country alone is almost the size of Europe. They can see so much without ever having to leave America.

In honour of history & the fall of the last Roman emperor 573 years ago today: A popular Greek song poetically tells of Constantinople's fall & his mythical return as the 'Marble Emperor'. Is there a similar legendary song telling of a major historical event, myth & folklore from your nation?

Yeah, but as I've said Serbian girls seem more closed. Just look at how stark the difference is between Russian and Serbian girls. Talking to Russian girls is way easier and you don't have to work as hard for one to open up about her inner life as you would with a Serbian girl.

Dating is more of a gamble in the Balkans. You could spend a lot of time on one girl that takes a while to open up and then when you find out you're actually not compatible you realize you spent a lot of time and effort for nothing

I heard from a couple of Serbs that dating girls is much easier abroad than in Serbia. They say Serbian girls are more closed and judgmental compared to foreign girls.

Why did the states in the Balkans prefer to fight over neighboring regions during the 19th and early 20th centuries instead of saving money to engage in overseas colonialism?

The only real difference I've seen is with using the 'ś' letter in words like 'śutra', but I think that was a recent orthographic Innovation that Montenegrin grammarians concocted. Aside from that I can't think of anything that could be interpreted as substantial

Unlikely. Dialects arise largely because of distance and lack of intercommunication. The internet has turned out to be the greatest destroyer of dialects. There's lot of examples. Younger Austrians are allegedly sounding more like their German brethren, for instance.

Why do we have so many small countries? Why can't we just unite all of them into a big country called "Balkania"?🤔

Posted by I_Am_Salty1@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 535 comments

SerbianMonies@reddit

That's not the Balkans. Neither Attica nor the Peloponnese are included, but Moldova for some reason is? We have a perfectly adequate term that includes the regions which are technically outside the Balkans, but belong to the same wider area as the Balkans do. It's called "Southeast Europe" (de. "Südosteuropa"). And Hungary should be included in that, not Moldova.
