How is life in Corfu?

How is life in Corfu?
I've been to Central Macedonia, Thrace and the Dodecanese and they all felt like home to me. But I'm curious about the Ionian Islands which have a complex and interesting history. Are there differences in lifestyle? I might travel to there in the future.

I was surprised too. But yes, it somehow is.

bruh. u should try telling them they're Balkan, lol... Ionian islanders r probably even more opposed to the "Balkan" label, compared to other islands, considering some of the stuff I've seen them say. & they'd be right, anyway... (even geographically). anyway, it's my second favourite group of islands, tho majority of my experiences r w/ Kythira, not Kerkyra.

They're southeastern Europeans.

Majority of people from Corfu I've met were big fans of Italy.

exactly, lol. (actually, that's an understatement, for some of them... I mean, yes Ialy is the "closest" country to Greece, I agree, but I've seen some of them act like Italy is the same country).

There are parts of Greece that culturally are similar to Italy and nothing about them is Balkan. *Corfu*, Cephalonia, Zakynthos, Cyclades ...

I have been to both Greek and Turkish parts of Thrace. Edirne/Adrianople and Alexandroupoli. In Macedonia, I have been to Thessaloniki and Kavala.

Kooky_Appeal_6554@reddit

As a Turk, do you refer to Edirne as Adrianople? How come? You aren't a native of Turkish trakya. Turkish Trakyalilar would never do that. People in Turkish Thrace call Edirne simply "Edirne"—never "Odrin" or "Adrianopolis." 😄ayde beaaa

? He/she is absolutely right. The OP is definitely not from Trakya. We would never call Edirne Adrianopolis. She even deleted her other comment. Furthermore, as a Romanian, you shouldn't insult your fellow countryman, even if he is Turkish.

I'm studying Greek in the university. I'm familiar with the Greek names of Anatolian and Eastern Thracian cities while I rarely ever hear the Turkish names of cities in Greece.

Kooky_Appeal_6554@reddit

Ne diyorsun be yaa? You hear the old Greek names for cities and villages in Turkey—among the average Gen Z ? Not to mention the average older majority population? Yo, dude, what the hell are you even talking about? Aydee Yunanistan'a git; Türkiye'nin senin gibilere ihtiyacı yok.

I know that the locals only use the Turkish names but the Greek names are a part of my study, so I hear more about those. Bizim ülkede sadece Türkçe isimlerin kullanıldığını biliyorum. Ama Yunanca dersi gördüğüm için Yunanca isimleri daha çok duyuyorum.

It has a very unique mix of Venetian, British (was a British colony between 1815 and 1864) and Greek influences. Very different from the rest of Greece. Locals are quite clannish and hate mainland Greeks for being too ottoman and also being cheap. Has one of the oldest (perhaps even the oldest) Romani community in Europe. Has a huge population from Albania (both ethnic Albanians and ethnic Greeks from Albania) who own most of the top car parks and tavernas on the island. Also has about 3,500 Catholics who are descended from Maltese labourers who mved here duirng the 19th century when both islands were part of the British Empire. Also weirdly has one of Europe's most impressive Asian Art museums.

I heard about those Asian Art museums. I wonder why they are in Corfu though.

It felt very Italian. Greece already feels quite Italian, but Corfioti are a step above that. I have also been told that the intonation they have in the way they speak is quite reminiscing of an Italian accent, but I am not sure about that.

I will be going on a vacation to the island this summer (Kassiopi in particular), so I am quite curious to read what people have written about the place. What research I've done concerns birdwatching. I'm hoping to come across some flamingos - the airport is right next to a large lagoon that has them. I also noticed that there are several abandoned villages inland. The island apparently has a lot of caves; I fully intend to hike to the Loutses caves as I found some panorama photos on Google Maps of what they are like on the inside and I was impressed enough

When i was kid/teen i visit corfu because I had relatives there. Corfu has a special culture compared to the rest of Greece and the 7 islands because of the musical tradition. There are 10 philharmonics and classical music festivals. Almost every child learns a musical instrument at school. my cousins knew violin and piano and both became music teachers and also the music university of corfu. Every summer they took me to music festivals/recitals. Also the museums and archaeological sites are worth visiting and they are not only classical Greek but also Latin, the museum of oriental art with exhibits from Japan and China. The Museum of Austrian Queen Sisi. And also worth to visit for nature...different from the Aegean islands. It is a very beautiful island that is worth visiting but it is also really expensive.

I went to a Greek school in London as a child, my best friend was from Corfu and my family is from Thiva (Thebes) Central Greece. We visited each others' homes, and found totally different worlds. In fact, I couldn't recognise anything really in Corfu, but it is so so beautiful.
