How common is leaving your AC on 24/7, even when the house is empty?

I moved from Florida to Nebraska in the middle of winter one time, and I had to go to the zoo and stand in the rainforest exhibit to be able to breathe without nosebleeds. That only lasted a couple of years before I fled back South.

In general, when a large segment of the population says "air conditioning" we mean something very different from many kinds of European air conditioners. Whole-house air conditioners are not isolated things clinging to a window, they are a sizeable outdoor compressor combined with a large indoor air handler that blows air through a system of ducts throughout the whole house. Also, depending on location and season, it can be damaging to allow a house's contents to bake at unreasonable temperatures, and it can take a very long time to cool back down. Certainly more than an hour. And that's not even accounting for the well-being of pets. As for leaving it on, the system is "on" as in set to cool to a specific temperature, but it only runs the compressor when the air temperature indoors gets close to the set temperature. On some settings, the air handler (fan) will cycle on periodically to move the air, or sometimes it can be set to "on" so it blows constantly without the compressor running, but that would be for a particular purpose such as drying out a water leak or some such. Then you have wifi thermostats that can be adjusted using a phone. And the best invention of all (from a perspective of pregnant or menopausal women): Alexa and other smart thermostats, that can be adjusted by voice command dozens of times a day depending on whether you are freezing or sweating at any given moment. So to answer your question, yes very common, but probably not the way you were thinking.

Yeah, she way way too idealistic and would have wanted to "just talk about it instead of resorting to violence like a Neanderthal." As for me, I'm just over it and not willing to put up with anyone's nonsense, not even young-me's.

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day?

Why in some places in America a police department is called " Sheriff's Office " instead of Police Department? Do sheriff's offices exist only in smaller towns?

Posted by EdicaranFauna@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 585 comments

Queasy-Flan2229@reddit

1. Why... is a police department called... 2. It's from dfferent types of jurisdictions and local/state differences. The 50 States are different, they don't have identical governments etc.
