Do you let your pets on the furniture? Do you let them sleep in your bed?

Every house I go to has different rules. Some people don’t let pets on any furniture, some people let pets on furniture but not the bed, and others think you’re insane if you don’t sleep with your pets.
I love animals and I’ve napped with them before, but usually on the couch or floor, not in my bed. Dogs get into some nasty stuff outside and cats love going into hard to reach places that may not be the cleanest.
One house I went to had a finished basement with couches and all of that was fair game for the animals but the upstairs furniture and beds were off limits. To me that felt like the perfect system. What about you?
Odd-Guarantee-6152@reddit
My two dogs are allowed wherever they want, but the don’t sleep in bed overnight because they interrupt my sleep.
Ericp02@reddit
My two dogs also interrupt my sleep and I don't kick them out of bed. Probably should but they love to cuddle
DogsBikesAndMovies@reddit
My dog is allowed on any furniture, and I actually encourage her to come onto my bed (that's where she is right now). Like you, she also doesn't sleep on my bed overnight, except it's not because she would disturb my sleep but the other way around. I have the annoying habit of moving lots while I sleep, so she prefers sleeping overnight in her doggy-bed, which is right next to my bed. Fellow Washingtonian here, BTW.
heridfel37@reddit
My last dog used to sleep with his back against my wife and his paws against me. He would twitch his paws in his sleep. When we got our current dog, my requirement was that he would not sleep in our bed.
baramonster@reddit
We had exactly the same kind of dog. Back to me, paws dug into my husband's back. She wasn't big dog, but had long legs, so she ruled the bed. In winter we dealt with it, but during summer (and she demanded to be covered, mind you) there were big fuss among us three to kick her out of bed, it just was unbearable in the heat.
heridfel37@reddit
In the winter, ours would also burrow down to the foot of the bed and curl up into a little ball, only to emerge in the middle of the night panting because of the heat and lack of oxygen
MossiestSloth@reddit
Mine dont sleep in my bed because I tend to roll in my sleep and kick them
this-guy1979@reddit
Same, my dogs also have free reign, even when we’re not home. We have leather furniture so it’s pretty easy to keep clean, and we have a blanket that we put on the bed for them to lay on. As far as sleeping, if my wife and myself are in bed they don’t sleep with us. However, if it’s just one of us our dog will usually get in bed with us. We have two dogs but they each have their favorite person, so it works out.
RelevantJackWhite@reddit
My cats are allowed on furniture but not the dining tables or the kitchen counters. They're also allowed in bed, but we kick them out if they start acting crazy at night
Loose-Set4266@reddit
My cat knows she's not allowed on the counters, but the miscreant gets on them anyway when I'm not in the room. I just sanitize my counters before I do any meal prep. Cats gonna cat.
boudicas_shield@reddit
Mine knows perfectly well that she's not allowed on the counter!
That's why I will sometimes hear a sudden thud and watch her flee past me through the door when I walk toward the kitchen.
pupper71@reddit
I had a cat who knew very well he wasn't allowed on the counter, so he would perch on the coffeemaker on the counter instead.
ging3rtabby@reddit
One of mine likes to sit in the sink. Cats are weird.
therealmominator@reddit
I had one that would curl up in the bathroom sink to sleep. He also was not allowed on the counters.
Fuzzy_Flan_3947@reddit
Tooo freaking funny! Thanks for the needed laugh!
Mysterious-Art8838@reddit
Technically within the parameters.
boudicas_shield@reddit
This is super cute. It’s “I’m not touching you” levels of logic.
bailasola@reddit
Same. I’ve never seen my cat on the counter. However, as soon as I head towards the kitchen, I hear her jump off it.
Loose-Set4266@reddit
bwhaaa same.
fakesaucisse@reddit
This is what I always tell people when they ask how to keep their cats off the counters. You can't. They are gonna cat when you aren't around. Just assume any free surface in your home has been touched by their paws or their little butthole and act accordingly.
Confident-Menu4051@reddit
if your food doesn’t have cat hair in it do you even have a cat?
rubiscoisrad@reddit
I woke up this morning with my kitten scratches having kitten hair fuse-dried into them. Little shiznits.
Macropixi@reddit
Lucky, I had a root canal on Tuesday, I woke up this morning to Kazuma punching me in the jaw.
Ameisen@reddit
Your cat or Kiryu?
Macropixi@reddit
Kazuma is the youngest of our four. We have Ryouko, Origami, Tachikoma, and Kazuma.
Classic_Cauliflower4@reddit
Side note: Origami is an adorable name for a cat and I’m surprised I never thought of it.
Macropixi@reddit
They’re all named after Anime characters. Ryouko comes from “Tenchi Muyo!”, Origami is named after a girl in “Date-A-Live”, Tachikoma is named for the mechs in “Ghost in the Shell”, and Kazuma is from “Konosuba”.
Although, Origami does get shorted to ‘Gami, and Tachikoma gets shortened to Tachi.
Mysterious-Art8838@reddit
Sounds right. It’s a cat.
BitterestLily@reddit
I have oven gloves that were a gift that say "The secret ingredient is cat hair." On occasion, it is likely true.
binderdriver@reddit
At this point, pet hair is a condiment....lol
ofBlufftonTown@reddit
My cats genuinely don’t go on the counters. They are from SE Asia and I think my maid did magic/terrified them somehow.
KittenPurrs@reddit
Our cat hates jumping. She was an alley cat we took in when she was probably 18-months to 2-years old. From the beginning, she'd paw our legs when she wanted to be lifted up onto the couches or the bed. We invested heavily in little cat stairs so she could get up to various windows and onto furniture. Physically, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with her according to vets who've been told this now 8-year-old refuses to jump more than one foot at a time. She's just not invested in jumping.
We still wipe down counters and tables almost obsessively since she's got a medium-length coat with a fine undercoat and that shit floats everywhere even with HEPA filters running. But the closest we've gotten to a problem was when we brought home catfish po' boys and she was frantically patting our legs asking for a lift onto the table.
Loose-Set4266@reddit
Why does their hair manage to float into all the highest nooks? Even when they aren’t jumping up there?
KittenPurrs@reddit
The ceiling fan blades! Once a week there's a barely noticeable amount of dust and full line of fine cat hair along the edge of the blade. She's brushed daily; I don't understand how she's not bald with all the fluff in our house.
toilet_roll_rebel@reddit
I've given up on keeping mine off the counters. It's a waste of my time. My monsters do what they what they want. I just clean it all the time.
HeyPurityItsMeAgain@reddit
I never saw my cat on my counters, ever, in daylight. Once I woke up in the middle of the night to get a drink and there they were.
katrinakt8@reddit
I had never seen my m cat on the counter since she was a kitten. One time I went out to my car to go to work. I realized I forgot something. When I run in the door, there she is on the course, leaning against the white microwave like she was trying to blend in. (She’s white.)
toilet_roll_rebel@reddit
Sneaky little devils.
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
My two cats understand and don't get on the kitchen counters. I even have cameras set up. They don't get up there.
dobie_dobes@reddit
Weirdly, my cats were more…ground cats. Not climbers. I got really lucky. 😂
smarmiebastard@reddit
We also have a ground cat. I’ve seen his attempts to jump from one couch to the other, and I understand why he chooses to stay closer to the ground.
pacifistpotatoes@reddit
Yep, counters & table tops get scrubbed every day because I know those shitheads were on them.
stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
I had a one-eyed cat who didn’t have the depth perception to make the jump. That was a plus.
Retb14@reddit
I put some tape around the edges and after a couple of jumps up mine doesn't go on that counter anymore
I let her on the other counter because I don't do any food prep on it and she likes to get on top of the fridge
Also she loves to fight the water in the sink and will jump up there no matter what if I turn on the faucet so I gave up on keeping her from going there
Aluminum foil also works as well but it kept falling off so I just used the tape instead
I used painters tape that's about an inch wide facing so the sticky side is up then used some tape in a roll to keep it stuck to the counter. Leaves me with plenty of space to do any food prep or anything else I need
Meijhen@reddit
I used aluminum foil in my kids' bassinet. Started it about a month before the baby was born, so the cats wouldn't get used to the idea that it was THEIR bed. The first time one of them tried to jump into it and then teleported back out, I nearly died laughing. It definitely worked!
Mysterious-Art8838@reddit
Friend did that too. Tape on surfaces. Swears by it.
Loose-Set4266@reddit
I've tried ALL the tricks and my orange girl DOES NOT CARE. She goes where she wants. but she's stinking adorable so I can't stay irritated with her.
caitejane310@reddit
Lol, mine are allowed on the "island" because they have food and water there and I don't bring food near it. But they still jump up on the counters sometimes but they'll start jumping off the second I open my mouth to tell them to get down 😂
I've also taught them "look but don't touch" when it comes to my yarn (I crochet) and my little baby will reach out and gently touch it with her little toes 😂 or I'll be crocheting along and all of a sudden there's a wet spot cuz she put her mouth on it without me realizing 😆😂😂😂
Loose-Set4266@reddit
Mine is an angel about my yarn and fiber for spinning. The only thing she is a miscreant about is food, hence not being able to keep her off the counters.
Given how much more of a trouble maker she could be, I’ve accepted this adjustment. No food can ever be left out.
But hey, my dog is fear reactive and we had to make a lot more adjustments for his welfare so it’s fine. 😆
caitejane310@reddit
Aww! I've had a number of reactive dogs so I know exactly what it's like! My current one is a collie that we pretty much took off my horrible BIL (who ended up dying about a year later from alcohol related ulcerative colitis) and this poor dog... She had never been to a groomer and her fur was so matted that she'd growl at us while petting her butt. It took us 2 weeks to cut them out and we cried when we got the last one! She was in no shape to have a stranger to it, but we couldn't afford to bring her anyway cuz we had just spent like $300 on a doggy delivery service that brought her from Idaho to Pennsylvania. She used to be really bad with resource guarding and there were a couple of good dog fights between her and my late soul dog. But we've had her for about 7 years and she's come such a long way!! I'm so proud of her!!
Loose-Set4266@reddit
Thank you for saving that dog! You put in the work and seeing the rewards of it now. Well done!
Our boy was abused pretty badly and is very people selective. Once he knows a person isn't going to hurt him, he's a sweetheart but mostly, he's an anxious mess and just needs a quiet life. Which I totally get and want the same for myself, so he was a perfect fit for us. When we got him, he was absolutely a bite risk but after a couple of years of consistent training and desensitizing him, he's unbothered and uninterested. Just don't take him to chaotic environments and he's chill. And to be fair, my PTSD also does not like chaotic environments so it wasn't much of an adjustment.
brian11e3@reddit
Ms. McWiggles has never tried to get up on the kitchen counters or on our kitchen table.
But Velvet and Emergency Food Rations go up there when they think we arent looking.
Mysterious-Art8838@reddit
Wait you have a cat named Emergency Food Rations? That is epic.
brian11e3@reddit
It's kind of a throw back to Menchi from Excel Saga. Menchi was a dog that the main character often times referred to as Emergency Food Supply.
NekoTheSpookieCat@reddit
I swear, Menchi was what popped into my head when I saw that name! 😍
GoldenGoof19@reddit
I love all of these names so much lol
brian11e3@reddit
I have a chicken named Lady Wormbane, 'Eater of Corn and Annihilator of Worlds'.
ljculver64@reddit
We got ours her own counter when she was a kitten. Its like a bakers rack we found at a garage sale so the dogs wouldnt eat her food. And we store all the animals food and stuff in it. Worked out really well, shes never jumped on the counters or tables. Not that i know of anyway. Lol
Mysterious-Art8838@reddit
That’s legit fascinating. Sounds like you’ve reached detente.
Murderhornet212@reddit
Yeah, my cat is good about it. My roomate’s cats, not so much.
Loose-Set4266@reddit
my previous cat wasn't one to jump on anything unless a lap was involved. my new cat is mischief personified.
Mysterious-Art8838@reddit
Payback.
Patient-Ad-7939@reddit
Literally! I get lazy and only wipe a bit if I’m cooking for just me. But if I’m having others over? I’m deep cleaning the counter and stove before cooking.
smarmiebastard@reddit
My cat has never really had any interest in being on the kitchen counters or table. He basically doesn’t care about being on any furniture that isn’t a couch, chair, or bed. I think we just lucked out with him though.
Justmakethemoney@reddit
I've always said there are 3 types of cat.
1) The cat that is physically incapable of jumping on the counter due to age/disability.
2) The cat that you know that gets on the counter.
3) The cat that just waits until you're not there to jump on the counter.
ITrCool@reddit
Dogs have owners, cats have staff.
3catlove@reddit
Yup my cat stays off the counter in front of my husband and son, but has decided if it’s just me the counter is fair game. Probably bc I call him “naughty, naughty” in a sing song voice and pet him when he does it. 😂
saaandi@reddit
I clean before and after because my little asshole…I mean cat… will lick everything so I’m always afraid there might be onion juice or god knows what on the counter he’ll lick up…
Unfortunately there is no furniture I couldn’t not let him on…not by my choice…
They don’t usually sleep in bed while we are but will sleep on our bed during the day…and some lazy mornings he likes to climb under the covers and snuggle. My sweet princess is part blind so she can get on the bed and couch but won’t/can’t jump on counters or tables. She’s not a snuggler so usually she might lay on the bed for 5 minute with you and than peace out.
cranberry_spike@reddit
Yep. I know they'll get up there if only to do the equivalent of flipping me off while doing a victory dance, so I just wash it down.
Lugbor@reddit
My grandmother kept a squirt gun by the couch so she could spray the cats off the kitchen counter without getting up. It took them a week to stop climbing the counters.
RectorAequus@reddit
They just learned not to get up there when people were around. Trust me, when the house was empty, they went wherever they wanted to go.
WindyMint443@reddit
My cats are actively encouraged to sleep on the beds and get on the sitting-related furniture. I want to cuddle with them! The line is drawn at the kitchen counter/tables, and that's "enforced" mostly by not having anything interesting up there they'd want and repeatedly removing them/scolding them while they're acclimating to the home. When I've moved, there's often a short period of time where they test if the rule applies to THESE counters, but overall it works. I know they probably get up at night sometimes (I mean, it's cats), but again, nothing interesting to make it worthwhile means it's rarer.
My family's dogs that I grew up with were allowed on beds and couches. I value animal companionship/cuddling.
aqua_delight@reddit
Same here. Any surface where food is eaten or prepared, or where toothbrushes are, the cats are not allowed. They know this. They do sleep with us, they can get on the sofa and stuff. But no where they can track shit paws to where something is going to be near my mouth.
Silvanus350@reddit
I’m sorry to tell you this but your cats definitely still go on the countertops.
suzemagooey@reddit
Same here.
JaneOfTheCows@reddit
Same here. They like to sleep under the bed, though, since that was their safe space as kittens.
animepuppyluvr@reddit
I bought citronella motion sensor sprays for the dining table and the kitchen counters (when hes not in his room or being supervised) because I'd rather die than have any pet think theyre fine to be up there lol
BananaJelloXlii@reddit
We don't use our dining table, so we put it in the corner between the 2 kitchen windows so the cats can look out the windows.
bass679@reddit
Same. The kids also don't let the cats in their room at night because the cats are jerks.
Sawoodster@reddit
My cats aren’t allowed to be on the counters or dining room table but very often they’re found on the counters or dining room table and fussed at. I keep bleach wipes handy to clean up before I use them
garster25@reddit
Match our rules 100%
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
That makes sense, it sounds like basic kitchen safety.
confan415@reddit
Dogs anywhere they want!
Syndromia@reddit
My rule is the pets are allowed on any furniture Im allowed on and the cats are allowed on the bathroom counter. The dog is very compliant and the cats...are not.
PuppySnuggleTime@reddit
We have four dogs. They are not allowed on the furniture, but they go to bed with us every night and nap while we read or talk or whatever. When it's time to sleep, they go their bed. Actually, if we are just lounging in the bed during the day they get to come up as well. But we don't have room for them to sleep there at all.
spn_willow@reddit
Yeah, I'm one of those who thinks it's wild to have a pet and not sleep with them. One of the best parts of having a cat was having her sleep on my legs at night. Can't imagine having a cat and not letting them in bed with me.
RelativeMiddle9782@reddit
Absolutely… as I write this one lab is asleep on the recliner next to me, the other is sharing my armchair
Fuzzy_Flan_3947@reddit
I have had one cat get into my corner wall mounted kitchen cabinet and hang out with my drinking cups. I swear he opened it up, because I hate cabinet doors left open. He was on the middle shelf too.
Exotic-Day-1082@reddit
My dog is allowed on the sofa and our bed, but he won’t sleep on the bed if we’re in it. Luckily, he is a pretty clean pip…no rolling in yucky stuff and he waits to be dried off when he comes inside if it’s wet out.
show_me_your_secrets@reddit
No. But my dogs don’t care. They go on the couch when I’m not in the room and hurry and jump off when I come in. 🤷🏻♂️
Both_Painter_9186@reddit
Unfortunately. I never wanted to. I lost that battle with my wife. We have blankets we put on the furniture that the dogs are allowed on that we peel back when we want to sit. The dogs are also, unfortunately, allowed on the bed. I have a special portable vacuum I go over the comforter with every few days and I end up having to wash them like 3x more often than I did before dogs.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I hope to get married one day. If my future wife and I have pets hopefully we could compromise. I can live with furniture, but the bed thing would really bother me. I watch dogs try to get into the dirtiest stuff outside. They’ll step in poop and not care, then try to sniff it! We can cuddle all day long, but please don’t bring that into my bed.
Alternative_Bite7001@reddit
Definitely get a dog if you want literally any hope of keeping it off the bed Cats can be locked out of a room, provided they don't learn to open the door which they can, but dogs can be trained (cats can be trained, but they also care a lot less about your desires)
Bubbly-End-6156@reddit
They make wipes for their paws. Baths also exist. I guarantee you'll compromise if a lady sleeps next to you with her favorite pet next to her.
It's not that serious. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, having a pet.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I’m like my bed clean. I typically shower before getting into bed. I used to tell my ex she wasn’t “allowed” in my bed until she showered when we came home from a night out. Wiping their paws would help but they would hate me if I tried bathing them every time they wanted to get in my bed.
Puzzleheaded_Lie6786@reddit
We do the same - we also have a dedicated armchair for the dog with a blanket on top to try to minimize the dog hair. Then we just have to remove the blanket off the one chair when guests come over.
We apply the same logic to our bed. We have a cheap blanket that stays on the bed all day that we remove before bed. That way the bed smells less like dog when it’s time for us to sleep.
Hairy_Cattle_1734@reddit
We have four dogs, and they’re allowed on the furniture, and to sleep on the bed. My one thing would be not to let them on the table, but my partner and her mother (who own the house together) are fine with it, which makes me CRAZY… but there’s nothing I can do about that, so… My thought is, they have such relatively short lives, I want to make sure they’re as happy as possible. And if sitting on the couch makes them happy, I’m ok with it.
B00k_Worm1979@reddit
My dog has a crate that she loves to be in, so she sleeps there or on the dog bed in front of the fire place. Not in our bed though!
eac555@reddit
Our dogs are allowed on both. I love sleeping with them.
JoeMorgue@reddit
Do you think this is done radically different in America or something?
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I’m American too, I’m just curious what people do. I’ve been to other countries where people own dogs just to have them as “guard dogs” and they sleep outside. We have much more a culture of spoiling our pets so I was curious.
Bubbly-End-6156@reddit
They're not spoiled. They're family. You'll grow up and live in the grey area like the rest of us, kiddo
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
Buying clothes for your animal or pushing them around in baby strollers is “spoiling” them in my opinion. Nothing wrong with it and I don’t really care, it’s not hurting anyone but I think many Americans spoil their pets because they’re their babies.
Bubbly-End-6156@reddit
Spoiling is subjective. No matter how many times you state your opinion, I disagree.
Dogs at cats succeeded at domestication. This is their reward. Raccoons are next. They have tiny hands. No one is going to force you to push a dog in a stroller. So what difference is it to you?
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I literally said I don’t care if people do. I think you just have a negative connotation with the word “spoil” and your associate “spoiling” as something bad which is why you’re getting so defensive. I don’t think “spoiling” your pets is a “bad” thing, I just know there’s certain stuff I am and am not comfortable with personally.
Ifyougivearagamuffin@reddit
If you didn't kniw, "spoiling" carries a negative connotation and implies that the parent or owner has made their charge worse
baramonster@reddit
Well, as Eastern European I can tell you some village folks still own dogs that are tied to their "doghouse" with chain at day and run loose at premises at night. More just let their dogs rummage freely through village any time, just stay behind closed gates at night. They are working guard dogs and treated more like livestock than pet.
But in cities we have spoiled pets and they are running households. It's cultural change, we tend to live more in cities and less in literal villages because of shifting workload from physical to intellectual.
SplitOpenAndMelt420@reddit
We tend to baby our dogs, more than folks in other countries
I wouldn't have it any other way :)
garster25@reddit
There is a wide range between working animal to pets. I know folks that have a miniature horse and it comes inside like a dog.
Persis-@reddit
My dog literally got off the sofa, taking my heat source, as I read this question…
bryku@reddit
Sometimes my dog lets me sleep on my bed.
Jokes aside, there are so many questions on this sub that makes me wonder if people are genuinely scared of dirt. People like to think we are some enlightened species, but at the core... we are still cavemen.
We need to interact with nature to help build up our immune systems and allergy tolerances. For example, children living with dogs tend to develop fewer allergies. It is even better for children that play without outside dogs.
Humans lived side by side with dogs for hundreds if not thousands of years... side by side literally. They were often sleep on beds to help keep us warm during cold winters.
Embrace your cavemen instincts and embrace dog!
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
Not a big fan of dirty but I think there’s a time and place for it. As a kid I cared way less and would touch or crawl into anything. I don’t mind getting dirty for certain activities outdoors but then I take a nice hot shower after. I like my bed to be a clean sanctuary. I’ll let dogs lick my face while we’re playing but I’m gonna shower or at least wash my face before getting into bed.
Nightlilly2021@reddit
My cat goes where it wants and dares me to stop him.
People with cats who say they aren't allowed on tables and counters, I understand but when you aren't around, your cats are on your tables and counters.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
One person replied saying their kitchen has doors so the cats can’t get in to go on tables or counters when they aren’t home.
Nightlilly2021@reddit
That's helpful but they'll need to make sure the doors are closed ALL of the time, even when they're home.
kellyforeal@reddit
I have a single cat. He does what he wants. Dogs do be nasty though and will stink your bed right up!
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
You’re right, honestly I never even thought of the smell, it was always just a cleanliness thing for me. I’ll let a dog lick my face but I’m definitely washing my face before I get into bed. If dogs could come and go from my bed freely all of the germs I try to keep out of my bed would be there.
Ifyougivearagamuffin@reddit
of course I do - my appartment is my cat's whole world, to deny her a comfy seat would be cruel
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I think it’s only cruel to expose them to it and take it away. They won’t miss what they’ve never experienced imo. Cats on couches don’t bother me but my bed would be kinda iffy.

Yes and yes. My dog and 3 cats are part of the family.
Alien_Biometrics@reddit
I love my dog. I would probably choose her life over a stranger’s. But Im not delusional in that this is a dirty animal so she gets to be outside all day and is not allowed on furniture.
Zizi_Tennenbaum@reddit
My cats didn't tell me I had an option.
ascaffo@reddit
This. When we go to work they're going to climb on something if they want to. I wash counters and the table before using them anyway. My family and friends know we allow our cat the run of the house. If they choose not to eat over, we're good with it. After 8 years, no one had stopped coming.
Zizi_Tennenbaum@reddit
Yeah I'll tell my cats to get off the counter if I see them, but I'm bleaching everything down before and after I cook anyway. When people say "My cats don't get on the counter/table" I think 1. Yes they do, just not when you're looking and 2. Since you don't think they do, are you not cleaning your counter before you cook??
Clear-Tale7275@reddit
My dad would hear the thump of the cat jumping down off the counter when he'd walk downstairs in the morning. Cats go wherever they want when we aren't looking.
rubiscoisrad@reddit
I had some skeins of yarn put away in the drawers under our bed. The cats can get under the bed, and sleep in whatever of the six drawers they like. We initially thought it was cute to open a drawer and find a couple of kittens cuddled up on our pants.
Then one day, I rotated the mattress and wanted to vacuum under the bed. The kittens had chewed through the plastic bag holding 3 things of yarn, and looped it around all the supporting posts under the bed. It looked like one of those psycho-killer yarn maps with thumbtacks and string, complete with shredded bits of newspaper (I do crosswords).
So yes. They do, indeed, get everywhere.
ascaffo@reddit
Right, someone could have sneezed there, or put a dirty hand, or a spider...I always wipe the counters before and after.
boudicas_shield@reddit
I do the same. And I'd much rather eat at the home of someone who has cats and therefore makes sure to wipe down their countertops before cooking than I would at the home of someone without pets who thinks that surfaces magically stay clean if there's no visible dirt.
kiwipixi42@reddit
I’m so confused, do y’all put food right on the countertop? In my house food goes on cutting boards, then into bowls, then into cookware. It doesn’t touch the countertop, ever. So no, I don’t obsessively sanitize the counter because food doesn’t touch it. I pull out clean cutting boards and bowls when it is time to cook.
So who cares if my cat hops on the counter, because food doesn’t touch that.
rubiscoisrad@reddit
If I'm making bread or pasta, yep. That's going right onto my work surface. I just clean it first.

"Visible" dirt! This is my beef with those marbley counters that are basically in every house - they've got something on them, they just look fine at a glance.
I live with 4 cats and 2 people that cook constantly (an older Cajun lady and a professional chef). You best believe step 1 in any kitchen endeavor is cleaning the counters!
caitejane310@reddit
I hardly ever use cleaning wipes cuz I think they're wasteful, but I do keep them in the kitchen so I can quickly wipe down the counter cuz I just know there were little kitty feet touching it! 😂

Our cats are allowed on everything but our bed and that is a fairly recent prohibition. They're not allowed in our bedroom at all anymore. I’ve had cats and dogs. Generally, all were permitted on the furniture if they didn’t destroy it. Things like tables and kitchen counters aren’t permitted (mostly the cats trying this). I’ve had one dog that wasn’t allowed on the bed at night bc she was huge and took up a ton of space and would be a grump if you happen to nudge her while she was asleep. But she was allowed on the bed until I was going to bed and then she had a command to go to her bed and she would hop down into her bed and sleep there.

I have a very very low shedding husky poodle mix. Basically a lightly wavy doodle coat. He’s allowed on the family room sectional, which is made of some indestructible recycled PET fabric. Waterproof blanket lives in storage ottoman for wet days. He is not allowed only formal living room couch, which is basically crushed velvet.
He has a big cushy bed right next to mine. He is also allowed in my bed if there is space, but not directly on the bedding… either on a blanket specifically for him or I will toss the dog bed onto the other side of the bed if I’m sleeping alone. That’s mostly to keep the white sheets looking good for an extra couple days.
ca77ywumpus@reddit
My cat goes wherever he pleases. I change the tablecloth before we eat at the table and disinfect the countertops before I cook. He doesn't sleep on the bed, he sleeps on my face.
kiwipixi42@reddit
Why do you need to disinfect the countertop? Is the food touching the countertop? Do you not have cutting boards?
Similarly are you eating food directly off of the table? If not why does it matter if the table is perfectly sanitized, the food shouldn’t touch it.
ca77ywumpus@reddit
It's mostly to control the hair. No one wants to have a tumbleweed of cat hair drift into their food.
On the counter, it's mostly a me thing. If I'm prepping food for just myself, I don't care. But if I'm preparing food for other people, I revert back to my food service training and disinfect everything.
GoldenGoof19@reddit
I set salad ingredients and veggies directly on the counter before cutting them up, and I touch the counters as I’m cooking - leaning on them, picking things up and setting them down, etc. So whatever’s on the counters is gonna be on my hands eventually, and whatever’s on my hands is gonna be on the counters which is why I disinfect the counters after cooking.
As for the table, I put napkins and silverware directly on the table so anything on the table is gonna be on those things. 🤷♀️

One night I went and slept in the spare bedroom because of it. I slept so much better, but my husband didn't like it. I basically said you can have me or the dog in bed, but not both. So now the dog sleeps in a dog bed next to ours.

My cats were allowed on the furniture and in my bed, but were not supposed to go on the kitchen counter. They did not all agree with this rule. I ended up having to put the softened butter under a glass dome (a cheese dome really), because one of them was a demon for butter, and was completely indifferent to any remonstrance other than being physically lifted down. She stopped being able to jump up there years ago, and finally died last year, but the room temperature butter still lives splendidly under its glass dome.
I valued their presence on the bed. These days I have a stuffed rabbit to keep me company. It does its best, but it's not the same.

ForestOranges@reddit (OP)

My chihuahua is allowed most places that she can get to on her own—which means she can get on to some furniture but not others depending on height. She cannot jump very high, but I did build a little step out of pillows so she can get on the sofa on her own. The only exception is she isn’t allowed to be in rooms with carpet unescorted because she has some weird desire to poop on carpet like it’s grass or something.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
The carpet thing is hilarious. Chihuahuas can be really sweet or they can be devious little shits. I used to visit a friend who had one a few times a week and half the time the thing loved me and the other half of the time it would give me such a hard time.

My dog allows me to sleep in the bed. I may or may not be spooning her now.
All of the dogs I’ve had were poodle breeds <15 lbs and all eschewed getting dirty. If it rains (SoCal so rare) my dog gets cleaned up. So generally, pretty clean.
I wash my sheets and comforter about once a week.
I find it very reassuring when she’s sleeping up against me, but she has a cuddle bed on top of my bed and generally sleeps there unless it’s cold. In which case, she’s under the covers but you’ll never find her because this one is 5 lbs. 🤷♀️
It’s definitely a mild consideration if I consider dating as I can’t reasonably evict her after years. But I’d prefer to sleep in bed with my dog more than a human. 😆 In fact I’ve dated wonderful men over the years but I’m old now and frankly I’m not interested in sharing a bed with a human, my sleep is disrupted every night due to illness. I’m delighted to have Kali near me but I don’t need a human, it would only make sleeping harder.

GoldenGoof19@reddit
I have cats so keeping them off the couches, chairs and beds is uh… not gonna happen.
BUT they’re REALLY good about not getting on kitchen counters or the kitchen table, they’re allowed on the bathroom counters though (they like to watch me put makeup on 😅).
I vacuum the couches/chairs every couple weeks and run a lint brush over them every few days. For the bed I have a soft blanket they like to lay on so they mostly stay there, but I also have a duvet cover I wash with the sheets.
I know I can’t be 100% sure they’re not getting up on the kitchen counters or table, so I wipe them down with disinfectant spray at least once a day. If I’m cooking then before cooking and after eating, otherwise just a quick wipe down.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)

My cat insists on sitting on the kitchen table every morning so he can watch the birds outside. He also loves napping on my bed when I'm at work. He has occasionally sat on and drank out of the toilet.
At this point I'd feel rude not to let him on the furniture. He's short, how else is he supposed to see stuff?
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I don’t really mind couches or chairs, but the toilet thing is an example of why beds kind of feel like crossing a boundary for me. If I had an animal that liked going on the kitchen table and I couldn’t train them out of it, I’d probably wipe it down daily. And once food falls off the plate and onto the table I wouldn’t bother eating it.
CJgreencheetah@reddit
I encourage my cats going on the couches and sleeping in bed with me because it helps my mental health a ton just having them near me. I have one cat that likes to sleep right up against me at all times and I've found that it improves my insomnia quite a bit. He doesn't disturb me because if I move around or roll on him or anything he just repositions himself against my waist or back and goes back to sleep. It's a win win.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)

Capital-Yogurt6148@reddit
I have a 115-lb. Great Dane. I adopted her at 3.5 years old from the family that had had her since she was a puppy. They didn’t allow her on any furniture, except in the morning. Then she was allowed in the couple’s bed for snuggles, but only by invitation.
When I first got her, I figured I’d do the same. But that first night, she was so distraught, she just wouldn’t settle. So I let her come up in my bed and she curled up and fell right to sleep. She’s been sleeping in my bed ever since.
She spends most of her days on my bed now, despite having her own dog beds in every room in the house. But that’s the only furniture she’s allowed on. Not even the other bed in the guest room, just mine.
Accomplished_Mix7827@reddit
My home is my cat's entire world. I don't restrict her access to anything unless it's absolutely necessary. She's not allowed on the counter while I'm cooking or in the cabinet where I keep the cleaning supplies for her own safety, but other than that, the whole house is fair game.
TieDye_Raptor@reddit
My cockatiel likes to hang out with me when he's out. He'll either sit on my desk so I can scritch his head, or he'll be on my shoulder, or on the back of my chair. I don't let him sleep in my bed with me, because that would be dangerous to him.

Dog: no to furniture because he’s 100 lbs and would take up valuable seating real estate. He doesn’t sleep with as night because he’s a bed hog and jogs in his sleep. He does get to cuddle in the mornings for about an hour.
Cats: how do you keep cats off furniture? Is that even possible. Ours do what they want although if we see them on a counter or table, they get chased off. They aren’t allowed in our bedroom due to allergies, so our door is always closed.

Counters? No. Kitchen table? Prefer not. (that's the cats of you didn't guess) Bed time my two yorkies join me, the latest in a parade of dogs since I was a kid. One cat sleeps with her head on my pillow. Not sure where the other spends the night. So yeah everywhere but where my food is.

80lb Bernedoodle owner. She is allowed on the sectional in the family room, and the sofa in my office, as well as the chairs in the bar room / lounge. She is also allowed on all the patio furniture. But she is not allowed on the furniture in the dining or great rooms. She knows this and does not attempt to get on the furniture in those rooms. She is allowed to sleep on our bed, but only on special occasions. She almost always wants to, but her bedroom is our master closet, where her crate is located. We have a routine when we go to bed we call the Puppy Bed Countdown. When she is on the bed already, I tell her it is time for Puppy Bed, then I count down 3, 2, 1, and then she hops off the bed and goes to her crate and stays there for the night. She’s a smart pupper.

I watch my friend's dog a lot and she likes to come up and cuddle on the bed or couch for a bit but she's a big hot girl and ends up moving somewhere cooler to actually sleep, usually the floor at the foot of the bed, which works for me. I do usually throw an extra sheet over my bed when I have her to catch a lot of the shed and I already have washable couch covers that match her fur color. Dogs aren't allowed on the couches without the couch covers but I'm not usually on them then, either
sfdsquid@reddit
I can't tell them what to do. They sleep where they want. The only place they aren't allowed is the counter that abuts the stove. I don't want them jumping up there and burning their paws. That's also where we prepare food, although always on a cutting board so it's not a big deal.

My golden retriever gets on the furniture when invited but she sleeps with my 100% of the time. It may seem counter intuitive but I have some debilitating insomnia and her presence is therapeutic for sleep. But we also do a brush and coat clean wipe down pre-bed and some paw balm in bed.
SockSock81219@reddit
My cat is allowed everywhere he wants to go except the neighbors' yards. Then we politely ask him to return and he usually politely obliges (we have him on a leash, so he knows we can haul him in if we need to).
We don't cut any raw foods on our counters or tabletops, and if we need to knead dough or something, we'll wash it off first. Otherwise, we don't worry about it. He's a clean, slender guy who does most of his business outside when there isn't snow on the ground.
I wish he'd spend more time on the bed, because he wakes me up when he feels cold or hungry or simply not paid enough attention. Bed covers 2 out of 3.

I have bunnies. They like to explore under the furniture more than they like climbing on it. They are litter box trained and don't track in dirt, so having them on furniture isn't a problem, but they do like to bite things.
The bunnies are allowed on the couch, but not on the tops of tables. They're not allowed in the bedrooms, because they crawl under the bed and become difficult to retrieve. There are also recliners in two of the bedrooms, and I don't want them getting trapped or crushed under there.

Nah my culture in Puerto Rico never did that. Dogs are for outside. The biggest culture shock for me was when Americans would let their pets into their homes and into their beds and lick their faces. To me, that was the biggest shocker. Dogs in Puerto Rico are pets true, but they aren’t treated like children. That’s the shocker most people have is the affection Americans have to their pets.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
My mom had a lot of Caribbean coworkers and they all had the same reaction. A lot of Americans would be heart broken and confused if they went to PR and saw the amount of stray and abandoned dogs around the island.
latin220@reddit
Yeah they would! Especially since dogs exist to serve man at least as the islanders see it. This idea isn’t the same as Americans understand it. My dad for example, never brought his dogs to the vet. They never were given toys save old teddy bear that my baby bro didn’t care for. They eat the scraps we don’t want and they protect our chickens and they’re our pets to share the land with. The dogs exist to protect and serve. To guard the home and family. Those that can’t? They don’t live long or don’t remain with the family. Sadly that’s created a Sato problem and we have to be better.

My dogs have their own chair and couch. And they do sleep in the bed with me when they want to
Sea2Chi@reddit
With my previous dog, I got him when I was single and living alone, so he got to do pretty much whatever he wanted.
We'd spoon in bed at night, and I'd get home with him sitting on the couch looking out the window watching for me.
I'd put down blankets on the couches and bed that were thin enough to wash regularly so when people would come over I'd toss them in the laundry and my couch and bed would look clean.
When I got married my wife also let her dog sleep in the bed so we had a 110 lb and a 70 lb dog both trying to share the bed with two adults. That was a bit rough.
They both eventually passed and we got a new dog who has no idea that some dogs are allowed on furniture.
Everything stays cleaner and he has plenty of dog beds that he enjoys.
ForestOranges@reddit (OP)
I’ve seen some people argue you’re denying your dogs comfort by not allowing them on furniture, but if they never experienced a life with furniture then you aren’t really denying them comfort because they can’t miss what they’ve never experienced.

I let my dog get onto whatever furniture he wanted. I treated him as a part of the family. Especially when he got older, the bed was his favorite spot (smelled like me) but he wasn't allowed in the bedroom when I wasn't home.
The couch was his second favorite, especially when he got older.
He was an extremely good pupper.
GOTaSMALL1@reddit
My dogs are allowed on the furniture at our house and sleep in our bed. They know not to get on the furniture at other people’s houses though.
They are also not allowed in the kitchen.
Extra_Routine_6603@reddit
Cats are allowed on couches but not tables and counters. Usually good about keeping off em but every now and then I'll catch one up there usually watching a bird or squirrel out the window. Otherwise can go wherever but usually don't let em in the bedrooms. Mainly because they don't sleep when we do and instead decide to patrol the perimeter of the bed and climb on my face while I try to sleep or randomly piss on my dirty clothes
BadPom@reddit
Yes and yes.
rebby2000@reddit
So, splitting this by dog and cats
Dog: Not allowed on the furniture, largely because it gives the cats an easy place to escape to if she's being particularly annoying about trying to get them to play when they aren't feeling it. She's also not allowed to sleep with me in the bed, but honestly, even if she was? She wouldn't be that interested. She doesn't really enjoy cuddling and I don't have a big bed.
Cats: Allowed on the couch, chairs and beds. That said, I don't sleep with them because 2 of the 3 are just...not good sleeping buddies lmao. They like to move around too much and stomp a lot. The other one actually sleeps in someone else's room (with her person), so she's just not interested.
TRDOffRoadGuy@reddit
My dog has her own pillow where she lays on the couch with us and she sleeps in the bed with me every night.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
We don't let the dog on the beds or the sofas, but there are chairs that are OK. Other family members allow dogs on the sofa, but not the bed. Still others allow the dogs everywhere. So that's three completely different responses just in my immediate family.
HourSun6924@reddit
We have two dogs: a staffordshire terrier and a golden retriever. Both are not allowed on furniture (they have several beds around the house), but the staffy usually sleeps with us or one of the kids. The Staffy is never stinky and is very hygienic and the golden is the opposite.
soupdawg@reddit
Not in the bed mainly because my dog licks its paws a lot and it’s annoying.
PapaTua@reddit
That's a leading indicator for dog allergies.
soupdawg@reddit
Yes she’s on allergy medicine
Asleep-Assistant-269@reddit
My dogs are allowed on furniture, but any future dogs would not be as they've done tons of damage (too old to retrain now). They'll have beds all over the place. Definitely not in the bed. My last GF before I met my wife let her dog sleep in the bed, and the bed just got nasty quickly.
lexicon951@reddit
Every home is different based on the owner’s preferences. A common rule is no dogs on the couch, but that tradition is quickly fading. Most people allow pets in their bed. My cat runs the house more than I do so it’s not a question of what I allow him to do. He just does stuff.
pacifistpotatoes@reddit
You try telling my cats they arent allowed on furniture. Especially when we are not home all day.
shammy_dammy@reddit
He is allowed on the furniture and the beds anytime he wants.

kartoffel_engr@reddit
No.
We did before we replaced all the carpet upstairs, but we took that opportunity to install a baby gate at the base of the stairs once that was done.
The cat slinks around, but she small and a super low hair impact. Dogs live downstairs and have their own beds. If I want to hang with my dogs, I lay on the floor.
BitchWidget@reddit
Absolutely. We have four cats (you can't keep them from going where they want to. They'll just do it when you're not home) and one insane cattle dog. We love them all.
Tron_35@reddit
We let our dog on everything except the leather furniture because his nails would rip that up.
Penguin_Scout@reddit
I have cats. The concept of “not allowed” is beneath them. We tried to insist they stay off counters but guess who likes to nap in a sunbeam on the counter every afternoon? The only thing that works is a closed door, but that is merely an obstacle to overcome, requiring stealth to obtain access to The Freshly Made Bed.
Sheila_Monarch@reddit
Yes and yes. But they have blankets that get washed at least once a week that protect my sofa and bedding. Not really because they’re dirty or smelly, they’re small and have very thin/slick coats (I can pretty much bathe them with a baby wipe). Their hair just turns into little needles when it gets embedded in things, so i prefer to avoid it.
CalmRip@reddit
My cat finds it vastly amusing that I try to assert some control over her access to any surface. As it happens, she confines her self to the beds (she lets us share), the sunny spot on the back of the couch, and any lap at any time. She only gets on the edge of the sink when Some Fool Hooman hasn't checked her water bowl yet.
FivebyFive@reddit
My dog is allowed on the furniture. I wash him and his feet if he gets into something gross.
He's allowed on my bed, but he's an introvert too and prefers to sleep in his own space.
birdconureKM@reddit
Not allowed on the furniture. The floor gets dirty enough just from the dog, I don’t want that on the couch. Our dog also has pica (eats non food items) so he is banned from the bedrooms. We keep the front room and kitchen clear of small stuff that he could possibly eat, but that’s not really possible with the bedrooms (large dog, 55lbs, that can reach mid-high stuff). He has two very large cushy dog beds though.
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
Let them on the furniture?
I'm lucky my dog lets me in the house.
Bastyra2016@reddit
I’m in the minority from what I’ve seen. I grew up with an inside dog (my mom only ever had outside dogs). He was not allowed on the furniture but had free run of the house and fenced backyard. When I got my dog (pitbull/beagle mix) I followed suit. I lived off a huge undeveloped swath of land and my dog and I rambled back there nearly everyday. His feet were dirty at times and his short coat got so oily that would transfer to your hands. I bathed him if he rolled in something disgusting or when he got especially ripe smelling. His blankets never really got clean in the wash.
When I visited my parents for the holidays and my grandparents and aunt were also visiting I ended up on the floor on the mattress from the pull out sofa. In those cases my dog slept with me. However I never slept that great. He would get up several times a night and pull the covers off me (he had to be under them). I also experienced my cousins dog sleeping in the bed with us when we were kids. The dog would shake the bed whenever he woke up to scratch. He was a cocker spaniel and his hair stuck to the pillows, sheets…I’d wake up with it all over me.
I fine with other people’s animals on their furniture-their house and their rules. I’m less fine with cats on counter tops from a hygiene perspective but I just deal with it without comment.
Penelope_Ann@reddit
I've got 5 in bed beside me now. One large, one medium, three smalls.
ember428@reddit
My dog sleeps on my bed, but I make a concerted effort to keep him on top, not under the covers. That being said, if he jumps into my sheets when I get up for some reason, I don't make a big deal of it. I pet him, touch him, cuddle him throughout the day, so whatever he gets into is there anyway.
The cat is a different story. I wouldn't mind letting him sleep on the bed at all, IF he let me sleep! Bus since he starts batting at me several times a night, he gets to sleep outside, or in cold weather, in the downstairs bathroom!
Wicket2024@reddit
My dog is on the furniture all the time...but he is a Shiz Tzu. I do not know if I had a large dog if I would have allowed it. He does not sleep in our bed. He did for a while and he would keep us up. It took about a month of being consistent and moving him off everytime he got on, but he eventually got it. He sleeps wherever he wants except beds.

GurProfessional9534@reddit
I’m allergic to my dog so he’s not allowed in the bedroom. He can go on the couch though.
Any59oh@reddit
Yes and (sort of) yes. My family has always been of the opinion that the dog has feelings and knows how to feel comfortable and uncomfortable, so there's no reason not to allow them have access to at least one armchair or couch, and my mom keeps an extra "cover sheet" on the bed to keep anything gross from the dogs off of the bedding she herself sleeps in. Sleeping in the bed is generally relegated to daytime when we don't use it, tho. Previous dogs were bed hogs and my current dog resource guards me if she and I sleep together too much

Aggravating-Ear2647@reddit
My pets are happy on the floor. In fact, my elderly Golden Chow mix prefers the cold cellar floor to her comfy dog bed. And I had a husky mix who would whine to go into the unheated garage during Maine winters. My fuzzy kitten that was adopted as the offspring of a barn cat would sleep curled up on her. But a lot of people insist on treating their dogs as human beings. In my humble opinion, they are much happier being treated as dogs.

It depends on which animal you're talking about. I have an 8ndoor cat, yes she sleeps on my bed and furniture. My family and I own a couple of small dogs that go outside, potty, basically stay in the yard. They are allowed on furniture and made beds. We have a few medium sized dogs that enjoy running through the underbrush on my large heavily wooded acreage. They also love going into the neighbor's barn and roll around in the manure and hay. YUCK! Those are not fun bath days. Lol. They, after bathing, are allowed on furniture. They prefer the cool floor over beds.

bloodectomy@reddit
Eh you can't really keep cats off furniture or countertops.
Whether we let them in the bedroom at night depends on whether we have to be up for work or whatever the next day. Sometimes we give them a chance. little dude usually hangs out by the door and little lady likes to curl up next to my wife. As long as they're chillin it's fine, but usually what happens is they wake up and get the zoomies around 3 in the morning, which leads to them yelling at us or fighting on the bed. We're not down with that so we kick them out, but then they attack the bedroom door x.x if we give them the heave-ho before we turn off the lights, they usually leave us alone at night.
if we're just napping we leave the door open and they can come hang out (we don't like to take overly long naps so if they happen to wake us that's usually fine!)

Once in a blue moon, she'll jump on the table to steal someone's dinner, but that's VERY rare. She usually elects to beg.

100 years ago in America dogs would have have never been let in the house unless they were toy dogs.

"Our" dog, when we have one, is actually my partner's guide dog, so there are certain boundaries I don't cross in order to maintain her safe, working relationship with the pup. They're trained not to get up on furniture, so they aren't allowed to do so for the first few months with us—basically until their partnership with her is solidified.
Once that's pretty down pat, my partner will generally let them up on her bed, but they need to be invited. They're very smart pups, and they pick up the distinction very quickly. They aren't allowed on any other furniture that isn't specifically for them or snuggling with them. We have found that assigning them a piece of furniture (other than their bed) in the living room leaves them with much less obvious desire to hop onto the rest.
When they get close to retirement, I'll let them up on my bed. They're usually pretty excited about that, as I often end up as their favourite person—my partner, no matter how much she loves the pup, needs to maintain her status as the alpha, while I get to be the "fun parent." :)

Our cat has the run of the house, he typically sleeps on the foot of the bed and only comes up to check on my partner and I here and there. He knows to stay off of the pillows and out of the sheets and sometimes sleeps between the quilt and duvet.
The dog (Dalmatian Labrador for context) isn't allowed on the couch or bed, but has his own furniture in every room. He gets into everything he can if given the chance and absolutely loves to swim. He was trained mostly as a hunting dog so he gets straight up country boy muddy.
The other reason is for his safety, he's athletic and healthy but I really dont want to treat a shoulder injury because he slipped on hardwood floors.

Valuable_Recording85@reddit
I don't really see the point in having a cat or dog that can't sleep on the bed or chill on the couch, with small exceptions.
My L-shaped couch has a blanket on the long seat so she can lie there without leaving a ton of hair on the couch itself. There are two dog beds in the house, plus one in my car. She's allowed in my bed, as long as she isn't in my spot. She likes to lie when on my spot if the bed and couch, and it's like this weird game where I make her move then she acts all indignant and then she cuddles after she's had time to pout.
wangus_angus@reddit
Our cats can go anywhere, really. I'd rather they stay off the kitchen counters, but they do, so it's not a concern. The bed and couch are fine. They're also indoor cats, so while they might get into some shenanigans in the apartment, they're not getting into dirt and grime and whatnot.
Cats are very clean animals on their own; they might get into weird nooks and crannies, but they're usually not going to settle down until they've cleaned themselves up. They also dislike being locked out of rooms in general, and in particular prefer to sleep in a group for safety, so locking them out of the bedroom may distress them. No shade to anyone who takes a different approach; this is just our reasoning for giving them free reign.

All other furniture is fair game. He sleeps between my legs at night. The top of the sofa (looking out the window) is his favorite perch. I get why some people don't want animals in beds, but I also can't imagine having a pet that isn't a snuggle bug.

Kittenlovingsunshine@reddit
My cat is allowed to be anywhere he wants to be in the house. This is any spot in the sun, on windowsills, on couches, chairs, and in our bed every night. We have never fed our cat from the counter or a table, or given him table scraps as we eat, or let him pick at food while we cook, and so he is genuinely not interested in tables and counters and never gets on them. The only exception to this is when we bring home corn from the farmer’s market for some reason, and we give him a piece of husk on the floor to keep him off the counter.
JuneRhythm1985@reddit
Our animals are allowed on beds and furniture. It’s just a matter of upkeep in the house as well as keeping them clean (wiping paws, brushing them outside, baths, etc.). I’ve never been sick because of one of my animals. My husband and daughter on the other hand…
Aware_Acanthaceae_78@reddit
Not only do I let my cats sleep on my bed, I let them sleep on me.
SnarkyBeanBroth@reddit
Our cat was kind enough to share her queen-sized futon with us. Often we were allowed to sit on the couch while we petted her, too. She didn't mind if we turned on the TV while petting her, as long as we didn't lose focus on the important stuff (the petting).
She did not get on the counters. There was nothing of interest to her there. The counters were for boring people activities. Cereal boxes and microwaves are not interesting.
AZJHawk@reddit
Yes on furniture. No in bed. I let my first dogs sleep in bed with me, but it was too disruptive to my sleep and other bed related activities.
HeadsInTheFreezer@reddit
For some pets the inside of the house is their whole world. They're allowed wherever they want to go at ours. Everything gets cleaned regularly regardless so it has never been an issue! It's just furniture.
clap_yo_hands@reddit
Cat can be on the sofa or bed, but not under the blankets on the sheets or on the pillows. Dog is not allowed on the furniture. She’s too big. She has bed around the house to rest on. Cat isn’t allowed on tables or countertops.
mournfulroses@reddit
My cat is indoor only and she's not allowed on the kitchen counter and stove but otherwise everything else is fair game. I've had her since she was 2 months old and she's been with me for 9 years now. This is her home as much as it is mine
mads_61@reddit
I have a cat and he’s allowed on couches, chairs, and in my bed. I have a gate that blocks him from the kitchen so he can’t get on my countertops or table.
I also let him sleep in my bed with me at night but if he gets disruptive he gets kicked out.

Absolutely we do. They’re family members, not second class citizens.

My cats are allowed anywhere except the kitchen counters, the record cabinet, or our nightstands, but that last one is more because they're wall mounted.
WowsrsBowsrsTrousrs@reddit
Cat is allowed on sofas and armchairs, nothing else.
UJMRider1961@reddit
Chair and sofa yes. Bed no.

I recognize this is an unpopular opinion but my dad, who is normally very lax in attitude, told my mom, when they got married, he had one non negotiable rule about them living together. My mother could have any animal she wanted, as many of them as she wanted (provided the budget allowed), but they weren't allowed inside. Our cats and dogs growing up had their own specialized insulated sheds, complete with heated mats for winter.
ShipComprehensive543@reddit
yes.
panicnarwhal@reddit
we have 2 big dogs and 1 cat - dogs are not allowed on the furniture and beds, they aren’t even allowed in the bedrooms. the cat goes where she pleases lol, and she sleeps in our bed every single night. she’s basically my teddy bear at night 😂
the dogs are out in the yard a lot, so they get too dirty to get in beds and on furniture - plus they’re just too big (the biggest dog is 85 pounds)
the cat has never been outside, and is constantly grooming herself, so she’s very clean
biggcb@reddit
Yes and yes. Cats.
MeteorMann@reddit
My dog died some years ago and I may never replace her, but she did have access to furniture.
She was not allowed on the couches and there were some chairs that she was incapable of using.
She had a low wingback chair that she was permitted use of and she was welcome to sleep in any of the beds (though, once everyone was asleep, she sometimes snuck onto a couch).
Vegetable-Star-5833@reddit
What do you mean “let”? My pets do what they want in their own home, they live here too
HerbanKitty@reddit
Dogs allowed on their couch, cats allowed on both couches. The dining table is basically a cat walk/chill spot, I always clean it before we eat there. Everyone allowed in the bed, although the dogs have to wait until they’re invited. They’re my pets and they only get a short life, I’m just trying to make it a good life.
Reminds of the meme “I’d let my cat borrow my car if he wanted it” because I definitely would haha
Docnevyn@reddit
Our current dog is a puppy. So he is allowed on the furniture but not in the bed until we can trust his bladder a bit more.
Yamtaggler@reddit
I have a tiny dog I inherited from my parents when she was full grown, so if I wanted her to sleep anywhere but in direct contact with me I’d have an uphill battle. I’ve just made sure I regularly clean her paws and ass and hope that’s good enough.
lil_ninja78@reddit
My dog and cat allow me to sleep in the bed with them.
Loose-Set4266@reddit
My cat and dog are welcome wherever we are, so they snuggle in bed and on the couch with us. I don't let my cat get on the counters but she still gets up there when no one is around so I sanitized the counters before I do any food prep.
Our dog has a bed right next to ours for sleeping but he still sneaks up on the bed around 4 AM for pre-breakfast snuggles. He gets a weekly bath and the bedding gets washed weekly. It's fine. He's also not the type of dog who wants to be rolling around outside. He's more the let's go for a walk then snuggle on the couch all day type.
Mysterious_Ad_1760@reddit
We have one couch the dog does not sit on ever and the others have sheets or blankets on them that can be taken off if a human sits there. She has her own blanket on the bed because she likes to be covered, and I change the duvet cover weekly. It's not perfect, but she's also been taught to wipe her feet when she comes inside.
SassyGirl0202@reddit
Yes and yes. My animals, dog/cats are inside only. Dog goes for walks on a leash but thats the extent of being outside. Other than to go out to potty. He spends no time outside otherwise. Kitties, never outside.
If you choose to get an animal they should be treated like family.
TheresaB112@reddit
My cats are allowed on most furniture except our tables (dining/coffee/end tables) but they are not allowed in our bedroom (partly because I am allergic and partly because they would wake us getting on/leaving the bed).
Murderhornet212@reddit
Growing up, my dog wasn’t allowed upstairs where the bedrooms were.
Now, my cat is allowed to go anywhere inside that her little heart desires except the unfinished part of the basement because I’m worried she’ll fall in the sump pump or get stuck in the walls.
Murderhornet212@reddit
Oh, I do keep her off of the counters or dining tables though.
Icy-Whale-2253@reddit
When I had a dog, the first night I got her she barked incessantly all night to get in my bed… needless to say she slept in my bed from then on.
Mental_Freedom_1648@reddit
My dog can get on anything except the table and counters. There were some half hearted attempts to keep previous dogs off the couch and bed, but nobody really cared enough to enforce it.

Early_Apple_4142@reddit
Our dog sleeps on the bed until we get tired of it and tell him to get off. He also gets on the furniture. When we go camping he usually sleeps with our 6 year old since our bed in the camper is smaller than at home and he doesn't fit at all. 50 lb golden doodle.
glamm808@reddit
Dog is allowed on the couch. Dog is allowed on the bed, but only after a special dog blanket is put down for her because she sheds

My cats sleep ON me. I am their furniture. I do try to keep them off of the kitchen counters but not the furniture in general.
KellyAnn3106@reddit
My dog jumps on the furniture and sleeps on the bed. I keep extra blankets/protectors on those surfaces so i can wash them easily. He's a cuddlebug.
My prior dog had clearly been mistreated by her first owners and was terrified of furniture. She wouldn't even get on the seat of the car and crammed herself on the floor when we went for rides.
Elfako_89_mask@reddit
They are allowed on the bed, not in.
ambiguousalmond@reddit
My dogs are allowed on the couch and armchairs, and one sleeps in my bed while the other sleeps in her crate—the older one has trauma with crates so she’s the exception and the younger one loves her crate.
Sadimal@reddit
My bunny is allowed on the couch but not on the bed. Rabbits are generally more active at night. I do not need him doing the Bunny 500 race on me and my partner at 2 am.
Not to mention, my bunny hates being on the bed. He will jump off if I attempt to put him on the bed.
Me and my partner move a lot at in our sleep so there's a high chance he would be squished.
Bed would also be off-limits for other pets as well.
OdinThePoodle@reddit
I’d rather have my cats and dog on my couch than some of my friends. If they can access a surface in my house, they can use it as they please.

Yes, but absolutely neither of the cats on eating/cooking surfaces. Even if one looks at the kitchen counter, I shake the water spray bottle and that's the end of it.
I'm not a germaphobe, but there's just some things I can't have guests see, and it's a cat where I prepare or serve food.

EBweB76@reddit
They’re allowed on all furniture, but neither cats or dogs sleep in my bed (if I were single then I’d most likely have a single pet allowed to sleep in the bed with me).
beardiac@reddit
We used to let our dogs on the couch, but that couch (which is now in our basement since we moved a few years ago) is all scratched up for it. So they are NOT allowed on the new couch we have in our living room now. They have dog beds in the room they can lay on. We've never let our dogs sleep in our bed.
We used to have a cat and it would spend time on the couch, we never let it on our bed because my wife is allergic. Even if it'd been on the couch during the day and my wife sat there in the evening, she'd get itchy and congested and we'd have to vacuum the couch.
Intelligent-Art-5000@reddit
Not allowed on the furniture, to include the bed. Dog has a dog bed and a crate with another bed that is covered with a blanket so that it can go in there and have its own space as desired. We do not use the crate to restrict her movement. It just acts as a space the dog owns and which no one violates, like a cave.

I don’t allow any animal on my counters or tables. That’s gross. And I still wipe them down before we eat off of them because I don’t trust them. The ones that are less than 100 lbs are allowed on furniture and bed, the big one has his own beds in almost every room.

Gymnastkatieg@reddit
Furniture is usually okay because we have blankets down and it’s pretty sturdy. If a human needs the furniture the doggy’s gotta scooch. He also gets kicked off if he tries to sneak up there wet. Absolutely not to the bed. I need my space in bed. And he has sharp claws and a love of digging in blankets, and my sensory issues need sheets so old and soft that they’re almost mesh.
Unusual_Memory3133@reddit

This always makes me think about a story I heard about Napoleon Bonaparte. Josephine apparently had a pet dog which she insisted sleep on their bed, which Napoleon vehemently opposed, but was powerless to stop.
That pooch must have been in the running with Wellington and Lord Horatio Nelson as his most bitter rival.

my cats can go most places. They don't go on the kitchen counter (at least that I've seen) but they are allowed on all the furniture. I do try and keep my one elderly, clumsy cat off my nightstand because he knocks stuff off, but it's a bit of a losing battle.
CasualVox@reddit

Cats are allowed on the couch and the bed. I’ve gotten used to them sleeping in between my legs and now it’s hard for me to fall asleep without them.

Growing up, the dog wasn’t allowed on any furniture at all. He would often sleep on the couch when we were out though. He thought he was sneaky but the warm spot doesn’t lie. When he got older he wouldn’t wake up to us coming home anymore and acted extremely guilty when he finally did wake up. But dude was like 17 so we let him do what wanted.
My cat is 100% indoor and I’m not sure if we could keep her off the furniture if we tried. Is that even a thing? She’s very clean though.
jmilred@reddit
The hundred pound golden doodle is the reincarnation of an old man who sits or lays down wherever he wants, complete with eye rolls and grunts if you make him move out of your way. He is in the sun spot on the floor over the winter and in front of the AC vent in the summer. In the evening he is on the couch with us. At night, he bounces around to everyones room in between sleeps and takes turns sleeping with everyone, sometimes on the floor and sometimes in their beds. He does what he wants and we don't really care. He doesn't shed so he doesn't make a mess.
Ckelleywrites@reddit
Tell me you've never had a cat without telling me.
Cats go where they like. Even if you think they're honoring your "no cats on the furniture" rule, I can assure you the moment you're out of their line of vision, that's exactly where they go.
bird_boy8@reddit
Yes to beds. They make awesome cuddle buddies. Both me, my partner, and our cat have been very sad that I have become suddenly so allergic that if he sleeps on our bed or is in our bedroom too much, I'll have an asthma attack.
So, now it's a no, but against our will!
He does get in trouble for "paws on the table". We don't like anyone in our house using the feet they walk on the floor with to step on the surfaces we eat and cook on. Other than that, the living room couches and the dining table chairs are as free to him as any of the rest of us. He's a member of the family so we try to keep the rules consistent and fair and equal for all of us. If my partner stands on the table, I'll lightly spritz her with water too.
Ballmaster9002@reddit
My cats sleep either on my bed or on me.
My wife wanted a "no dog bed" and we lasted about 4 months before she broke down and let the dog in. Now the dog typically sleeps on me too, if not totally under the sheets by our feet.

Cat was allowed except on tables/counters. Dogs were only allowed on "their couch" which was an old/lower couch that faced the back patio.

Dining room table is the only place he’s not allowed. He knows this. So he sits on the seats.

My cat is allowed on any surface that I don’t put food on. So no kitchen counters or dining tables, but anywhere else.
