How much of your body would you replace with mechanical body parts from sci-fi?

TronicCronic@reddit
Let's go with a small crystaline core that can replicate biosynthetic flesh in whatever shape/form I want around it at will.
sjjbryant@reddit
I can’t wait for my robot body!
MyName4everMore@reddit
99.99999998%.
The real me is barely me.
cascadesblue@reddit
Teeth, having bio mechanical teeth that work effortlessly just as organic teeth and neck vertebrae
Additional-Agent9737@reddit
Legs and shoulders is enough for me
badbutler04@reddit
All of them, save for my face.
roses-are-lead@reddit
Carve out my brain and my painful memories. Whatever bot lives there after I'm gone can make decisions about the rest.
Notonfoodstamps@reddit
At that point give me the full Revenant simulacrum treatment.
Cheap_Walmart-Art@reddit
Cyber knees would be sweet.

The flesh is weak... I crave the certainty of steel.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
Steel is strong but it doesn't repair itself.
Only_Information7895@reddit
But steel can be replaced and likely much easier. Let's just use our current tech. A person lost their leg, they can just buy a prosthetic and if it breaks for any reason then you can just buy a new one.
Even with self healing flesh it is a kinda standard procedure to just cut the whole limb off if the damage is too severe as it wouldn't heal properly anyway (even with medical intervention).
Critical-Michael@reddit
It's a reference to this video from Warhammer 40k: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9gIMZ0WyY88&pp=ygUid2FyaGFtbWVyIDQwayB3ZWFrbmVzcyBvZiBteSBmbGVzaA%3D%3D
I_might_be_weasel@reddit
Someday the crude biomass you call a temple will wither. And you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved. For the machine is immortal!
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
nothing is immortal everything dies sooner or later that's beautiful
I_might_be_weasel@reddit
No, the machine is.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
Mechanical is beautiful but there is no such thing as a machine that runs forever sooner or later the machine will stop and something new will emerge. and that is beautiful
RedErin@reddit
now we’ll figure out a way around entropy
JustPlayDaGame@reddit
not really possible. not without the Outer Wilds method, which is based in semi-fantasy physics, so probably not going to happen in the next million years.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
A million years is nowhere near forever.
JustPlayDaGame@reddit
for humans it is.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
and you don't think you'll go crazy long before this
JustPlayDaGame@reddit
huh? i’ll be dead.
Peace2619@reddit
This is all just about a Warhammer reference.
JustPlayDaGame@reddit
oh, thought it was cyberpunk
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
If something exists, there is a way to destroy it.
RedErin@reddit
even quantum foam???
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
Quantum boom 💥
WoolooOfWallStreet@reddit
EVEN IN DEATH
I SERVE THE OMNISSIAH
ttystikk@reddit
No but it can be infinitely repaired and upgraded, which the flesh cannot match.
Anyone who's restored a classic car knows that pang of jealousy of which I speak.
JustPlayDaGame@reddit
no, but why would it need to? the time frame it takes your body to repair itself from any serious injury is long enough that you could’ve just swapped out for a new part. And also, bodies can sustain permanent injuries.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
ok but it would probably be very expensive to maintain it even if everything was fine
JustPlayDaGame@reddit
in a society where cybernetics are commonplace, there will be tiers of affordability. You’d probably have a spare of commonly injured parts laying around, too.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
Femaybe maybe not
TerrapinMagus@reddit
It also doesn't destroy itself, which my body has a tendency to do. Get me out of this defective flesh bag
Pretend-Mango-1295@reddit
I was thinking about getting metal legs, it's risky but I think it'll be worth it
livin4donuts@reddit
How could he see me?
Ogglar@reddit
I grow weary of this flesh I was born into, strangely disgusted by its nature. I crave only the cold, clean certainty of steel and silicon, that I might become one with the Blessed Machine.
archwin@reddit
All praise the Omnissiah
nomoreimfull@reddit
The meat, and all it wants...
MordaxTenebrae@reddit
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.
Beginning_End_361@reddit
I’ll wait for my parts to wear out before I replace them.
Kilroy1007@reddit
As much as I can without sacrificing the vices of the flesh. Food, sex, the works. The feeling of the warmth of the sun on your skin, the feeling of acceleration when you're taking off. The exhilaration of being in the air, feeling the wind whip past your skin like its trying to grab you. The flood of emotion that comes with holding your children for the first time, and the feeling of their little heartbeat on my chest.
You know, the little things.
Spartin1178@reddit
Id swap out an arm i think maybe an eye
Zaphied@reddit
Do I feel neuropathy/migraines/phantom cramps with the machine bits? If no, sign me up for brain in a jar. I'm ready to learn to be a cogboy.
Optimal_Duty7521@reddit
Does it have to be from sci-fi? Because I know of a certain vampire movie with a guy that has a gun dick.
My_Uneducated_Guess@reddit
As much as it takes for me to be capable of living forever
Critical-Annual-4201@reddit
Everything but my brain.
CaptainC00lpants@reddit
All of it because why wouldn't you? It can look and feel like flesh, but do wicked cool shit
Imnotspartacuseither@reddit
Joints and eyes for sure... maybe a neuroware processor and some skill chips
b00gersugar@reddit
If my consciousness could be perfectly transferred over, I’d say everything but my cock.
Thin-Telephone2240@reddit
Already did that. Titanium in my jaws and supporting all my teeth on two bars of titanium.
Nilo-The-Slayer@reddit
0%. Unless you're an amputee, there is very little upside. Nothing we can create now or in the near future will be better than our biology. And definitely not cost effective or safe. And even once the tech (or more likely biotech) is there, it will be subscription plans and priced out of 95% of the population.
d20diceman@reddit
Depends how sci-fi we're talking. I wouldn't want to give up sensations of touch, for example. But if it's full blown maxed-out-tech-tree stuff then sign me up for becoming a shape-shifting swarm of nanobots
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
I'm thinking about cyberpunk 2077 level, not nanobots level.
Astrotoad21@reddit
I’d probably go with sensory implants and neural implants for brain capacity.
I like the sense of movement as is. But if I get pains and injuries as I get older I’d replace a joint or limb for sure.
SkiyeBlueFox@reddit
Assuming 2077 level I'd probably go for some lightly useful things that dont have much in the way of downsides, but definitely not to the "full limb replacement" point. New organs? Sure why not if my real ones are in a bad way, maybe a cyber eye for to get rid of glasses, plus would be good for a guiding line when mowing grass or plowing parking lots.
The flesh remains unless theres good reason
stream_of_thought1@reddit
Give me cybernetic eye implants so I can ...mow the lawn.
I want cybernetic gorilla arms to knead dough without getting tired then 🤣
SkiyeBlueFox@reddit
I mean laugh at me but im going off "if this shit appeared tomorrow what am I doing?" Im sticking to what I already do for a living. If we get full on cyberpunk society I might go further but if they just appeared on the market tomorrow im not rushing in, I'm keeping my job and waiting til I see how things go.
I enjoy the simple things eh
stream_of_thought1@reddit
Hey I'm totally on your side here, I can see extendable legs helping me clean the top of my kitchen. Or wheels for feet so I can just glide around all the time. It's more fun than to imagine violence
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
I somewhat agree with them.
H_is_for_Human@reddit
Cyberpunk 2077 lore implies only the wealthy can afford the upkeep for all the implants or bad things happen (rejection, no software updates, etc).
So yeah it really depends on the setting. "The Culture" style implants and drug glands I would sign up for in a heart beat.
TheMightyMisanthrope@reddit
I would rock, rock I tell you, my mechanical dick.
OrganizationPutrid68@reddit
Most of it. That shit's all got serious mileage on it.
brettyrocks@reddit
As much as possible.
theMightBoop@reddit
Zero unless I absolutely had a medical need.
I used to think cybernetics were cool. That technology was cool. Then we got to the modern world and I realize it would suck.
Corporations wouldn’t sell you a cybernetic arm. It would be on a subscription plan. You would never own it and have to constantly upgrade. You would be getting ads and shit.
They would push a bad update and your arm would stop working. Your arm would get hacked.
And that just an arm. I can’t even fathom the shit they would do if they had a chip in your brain.
No thank you
Moist_Rule9623@reddit
They can rebuild me, gentlemen… better, faster, stronger… they HAVE the technology…
DungeonLord@reddit
Currently just back and right knee
Kambobium@reddit
get rid of my brain and dick, leave everything else
Different_Cherry8326@reddit
If it was indistinguishable to others I would replace a lot. I would rather get some sort of gene therapy that would make me into an enhanced human biologically if that were an option though,
Bk_Punisher@reddit
Arms and legs for sure, I wouldn’t mind having two arms like the winter soldier.
Uma_mii@reddit
I would give a lot for a hard drive for my brain
namiraj@reddit
[cries in ADHD] Can I have more RAM for my terrible working memory? I JUST had my mug in my hand and now it’s disappeared.
Bk_Punisher@reddit
Check the other hand.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
in terms of living forever... having an opportunity to see old memories again or make a copy of yourself?
LegOfLamb89@reddit
I'd probably keep at least one eye. I'm already suspicious of the nature of reality, I don't want to add to that. I'm unsure if I'd tamper with the brain or central nervous system directly. I may have something to regulate hormones like insulin, adrenaline, but not dopamine. Cyber dong 100%
jarious@reddit
I want a prosthetic penis with the material like Baymax is made of , flexible ,soft and adjustable...
BrainwashedScapegoat@reddit
BAYMAX??? My healthcare companion!!!
jarious@reddit
Yeah that boy soft and untreathening , would make a good penis , non threatening and adjustable
BrainwashedScapegoat@reddit
Depending on the quality, I go for joints or full body with my brain be transplanted
LoreChief@reddit
Ghost in the Shell type full cyborg body and cyberbrain. All the positives of being a living organism, but none of the constant negatives like chronic pain, illness, stomach issues, etc (assuming you don't get Locked In Syndrome).
Bonus points if you get the really cool stuff like stealth, super strength, etc. one of my favorite episodes was when she was having a fully immersed online discussion in a VR room while also driving in the real world. Being able to send your ghost through the Internet sounds cool, as does severely decreased aging.
3MetricTonsOfSass@reddit
I scrolled way too long to reach the best answer. Kids these days, I tell yah!
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
fair enough
BugApart8359@reddit
My eyes, all of my joints, I'd go for some extra arms... My back.
aoeuismyhomekeys@reddit
Stomach - no more digestion issues
internetisporn8008@reddit
Most of it providing it was really well done tech Heads up display Augmented reality Legs that never tire or break, arms that are the same.with a whole bunch of other features... a wolverine style reinforced skeleton...
Id want to still be human... but an unimaginably better version... hell yeah sign me up
Nerx@reddit
depends on the parts
would go far for superhero tech
like 9 pints of nanite blood, hawksmoor augs, midnighter set and apollo package
connect me to the carrier
kyew@reddit
I don’t want to be human. I want to see gamma rays, I want to hear X-rays, and I want to smell dark matter. Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can’t even express these things properly, because I have to — I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid, limiting spoken language, but I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws, and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me. I’m a machine, and I can know much more, I could experience so much more, but I’m trapped in this absurd body.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
sounds more like you want to evolve into a higher being or a god. or something similar like Q from Star Trek
kyew@reddit
The quote is from Battlestar Galactica, an android explaining to his creators how much he resents being a mere humanoid.
He could have been a starship. No one can say that wouldn't be cool.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
As long as you have something to do, I agree, but most of the time you're just traveling around with nothing to do.
kyew@reddit
Starships can also get on the internet.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
the question is do you have contact with it when you are out in space and also how long does it take to get information. you can probably watch all the episodes of the tv series in a few seconds. so it won't take long before you get bored. of course it is possible to get bored in that state
kyew@reddit
If you get bored you underclock your CPU.
Kflynn1337@reddit
I'd go full Ghost In The Shell whole body prosthetic and digital brain.
Disastrous_Ad1260@reddit
Knees for sure. Probably just replace everything piece by piece as it wears out. If I only had one shot, I'd say do all the joints.
VulpesIncendium@reddit
All of it. Just make me into a brain in a jar remotely piloting a mech.
Tomj_Oad@reddit
I'd have to replace my spine and legs and have all my joints reconditioned or replaced.
Basically I'm handicapped and my legs are worthless
Oberic@reddit
If I could become made of nanobots I would.
PozhanPop@reddit
Spine
Eric_Durden@reddit
Fuck it. I'd go full Adam Smasher.
SoUpInYa@reddit
Any one that orovided energy without eating. Food is such time and expense
RickySlayer9@reddit
I feel like the move is to add not replace. Add a robot arm, don’t remove my arm for it
Forgotmyaccountinfo2@reddit
I'd add arms rather than replace
Mahoka572@reddit
I'd take an eye. I would want one of my natural ones still though.
zoredache@reddit
I think I would want to go full Bob. IE I think I could be happy as uploaded copy of my brain running a self-replicating starship.
I12Db8U@reddit
I'd do as one of the 'supermen' did in the Taiwan novel 超人列傳》by 張系國. Have my brain put into a robot body with super-strong/durable but synthetic bones, muscle, flesh that is visually/tactilely indistinguishable from the real. (I'd make myself much better-looking, though, of course.)
dacydergoth@reddit
Ask Charles Dance
(Space Truckers for those who need a hint)
_fly-on-the-wall_@reddit
only keep my brain
psylentrob@reddit
I'd be willing to go full Ghost in the Shell.
Wurm42@reddit
Dude, I have rheumatoid arthritis (RA). How many of my joints can you replace at once? And can you give me a configuration panel for my immune system at the same time? If that means you have to replace my spleen, go for it.
Honestly, my right hand and foot are so screwed up by RA, I would probably be better off with sci-fi robotic replacements. Can I get little tools that pop out of my fingers? I'll absolutely swap out my right hand if I can get fingertip drills, screwdrivers, etc.
Adventurous-Depth984@reddit
At least half
morey56@reddit
All of it. Fuck biology.
largos7289@reddit
eyes 100% x-ray vision that sh*t.
Dapper-Ad9787@reddit
Knees, eyeballs, feet, shoulders.
gravesnotgideon@reddit
Id at least keep my hair, my brain and my junk
LordMoose99@reddit
Naaa replace the junk. So much fun to be had with that
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
I understand the brain and the penis but not the hair. Wouldn't it be convenient if you could change the color and length of your hair. Plus you don't ever have to go to the hairdresser or use any gel?
teffz28@reddit
Well, you can already do all that without a hairdresser or gel
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
yes but you don't have to maintain your hair as often and you can change it after a few seconds
schmockk@reddit
If we're talking Rimworld bionics I'd take everything except the venomous fangs and stuff like power claws. Bionic eyes, arms, spine, legs, heart, lungs, liver etc and stuff like mental calculator, blood coagulator when bleeding, etc etc. maybe throw in the archotech versions if possible.
JebediahKermannn@reddit
As a very short-sighted person, I think my first choice is obvious.
Also, a mechanical heart with greatly increased stroke volume and cardiac output would be sweet.
My last choice would be a double knee replacement with a much harder-wearing alternative, and a new lower back. And shoulders. And elbows.
zephyrus4600@reddit
Full conversion cyborg. Just a brain in a vat with some sugar intake as necessary.
Ninja_Wrangler@reddit

I've seen the other side of the software world and it is only getting worse by the day
I don't want anything that relies on slop code in my body.
I don't want parts that: - a company can remotely repossess/brick. - made with planned obsolescence in mind. - can be hacked/need to be updated. - are subscription based.
If you think none of these will be issues, then you haven't been paying attention
The_Southern_Sir@reddit
Can I finance?
FriesinmySammy@reddit
At least my feet and knees for sure, they're always in pain
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
sorry you're struggling with your leg. I absolutely agree that if you're struggling with a body part you should replace it if possible.
FriesinmySammy@reddit
Yeah it hurts but I'm not gonna go cut it off
CulveDaddy@reddit
All except my brain and reproductive organs
squashqueen@reddit
Legs and joints for sure, probably also arms, but I want to keep my hands fleshy
Odd_Possibility_2277@reddit
1 hand and wear a black glove like luke skywalker. Always be yourself unless you can be luke skywalker then always be luke skywalker
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
I like him better han solo but I understand
Odd_Possibility_2277@reddit
Hans cool as fuck but hes not the last jedi
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)

HerfDerfer@reddit
Everything besides dick and brain
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
Why are you all so obsessed with the penis? I think you're the 4th or 5th person to say the same thing.
HerfDerfer@reddit
Two most important body parts duh
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
you can freeze some seeds to make children.and replace your penis with a feeler or more is the biggest you want it. and don't have to use condoms is worry about sex diseases never again
greenskye@reddit
As long as it's an upgrade with no downsides when compared to original flesh, then pretty much everything possible.
If it's not as good as flesh in some cases then it depends on the specific downside. I wouldn't give up touch or anything. I could handle needing to charge it or something.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
agree with you on that
No-Sail-6510@reddit

Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
I think you are the first to say that there is no need for mechanical body parts. Also when you struggle with a body part that hurts all the time you will change your mind.
Tairc@reddit
Depends on the quality. If we’re talking Cyborg from the Justice League, or Vision from Marvel, etc, those quite a bit. Even Endo-Sym from Marvel, etc.
Now things from Star Wars? Way less so. Those things aren’t much better than real tissue, with major trade offs.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
cyberpunk 2077 level without side effects
LongOrganization7838@reddit
Depends on how much I trust the companies making the parts
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
We're talking about a company, do I need to say anything more?
ProminentKnuckle@reddit
My spine all the way to my neck, my eyes, and possibly my arms just because I think that would be pretty cool.
Ryntex@reddit
I think a lot of people would choose that to avoid backpain and such.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
I agree that would be cool, but I'm afraid you'll ever need a windows update.
herejusttoannoyyou@reddit
Haha, I have enough anxiety when my computer needs an update. I can’t imaging windows being in charge of my body’s software
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
The only thing I can say to that is good luck.
MxM111@reddit
Knees are still fine?
BarooZaroo@reddit
I’ll keep my head, 1 hand, and probably my dick depending on what society feels about it.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
Society feels about you dick hand or head What are you removing?
Mad_Maddin@reddit
Depends on what they can do and the potential downsides.
For example I'd absolutely take eyes that allow me to go for night vision, augmented reality interface, camera function, etc.
But if it then requires shit like regular maintenance, taking immune supressants, etc. Then I'm out. Don't need it that desperately.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
agree
matthewpepperl@reddit
If its as good as the scifi stuff then pretty much all of it

simonbleu@reddit

Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
What about a brain chip? It's almost like having an extra sense.
simonbleu@reddit
I woiodnt risk it. Something external sure

Acidmademesmile@reddit

Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
fair enough you have a better self-image than I do be proud of that
Acidmademesmile@reddit
Well maybe your toilet bowl is deeper?
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
maybe maybe not who knows
Porcupineemu@reddit
Some joints. Replace my screwed up knee and shoulder.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
hope one day you can do it. it sucks when you have a problem you can't fix. this is coming from a person who struggles with head pain dizziness and nausea daily. because of a lack of blood to the brain. from a blood vessel being pinched in the neck. i understand you well
9thSphere@reddit
Least of all, my legs. My knees, hip, & back are shit. Better yet, cortical stack me, so I can jump into a nice synth sleeve.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)

Probably just some nanite blood.
Not too keen on multiple replacement surgeries for parts or needing pharmaceuticals for stabilization/rejection.
Accomplished-Bad-454@reddit (OP)
