If you're married, when did your parents meet your in-laws?

Posted by summers_tilly@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 178 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

They both just happened to have overlapping visits and they met then rather than any special meeting. The wider family they probably didn't meet until the wedding. It isn't a big issue, it takes a lot of doing if people live in separate areas.

How exactly do you see a Doctor in the UK?

Posted by UndergroundSaxClub@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 107 comments

I can make an appointment using the myGP app. However in your case if you have tried and failed multiple times to call and make an appointment, I'd be going in and telling them I'm not going until they book me something. Or stand at the desk on the phone demonstrating how crap their system is. Got to be a nuisance.

8, then not much further and I am at a main road where there are pubs almost within sight of each other. A few of the rougher ones have gone, some have gone a bit gastro, but it seems pretty healthy round this part of Bristol

I feel like they are just doomed to fail as they are stuck in crappy antiques fairs with ruthless stall holders then trying to flip stuff at auction to turn a profit where it can go for virtually nothing. It should be the other way round!

Do people who like to go out find deciding what to do on a Friday/Saturday night painful?

I remember this happening a lot, the worst was new year. People wanting to make it special / different to the point they forget to just go out and enjoy themselves. The place you will find becomes somewhat irrelevant.

Is it justified to be offended by my cousin not inviting my wife to her wedding?

Posted by Jeremys_Iron_@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 209 comments

Pretty normal as otherwise everyone's plus ones (many of whom they won't know) basically doubles the wedding numbers. You can go without your wife can't you, the rest of your family would be there so it is not like you are flying solo?

What is the consensus on going out alone?

Posted by Obvious_Goat_764@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 130 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

I go to a lot of gigs alone, I haven't really thought anything of it. If I look around, how do I know who is even on their own or with a group anyway if we are all stood there staring at a stage? If it is a hectic one in the past, we often lost each other at points anyway. Pubs I have killed time by having a quick pint on my own, or had one when meeting someone later, I haven't sat there cursing what a loser I am and don't *think* anyone around me was pointing and staring. Clubbing is a bit more of a social thing so can't imagine wanting to do that alone I guess.

I reuse for things like bread, but the idea of rinsing and drying out plastic bags does seem like more effort than it is worth tbh, if it had say raw chicken or something with a load of sauce in there.

Try one of the chinese style ones like Mayflower. Any of the powdered Bisto type ones aren't quite right. This is all chip shops use anyway, they aren't brewing and simmering their own sauces from scratch out the back there.

Have you had to deal with disappointment due to rain on your wedding day?

Posted by MrShifty91@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 209 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

One thing to remember is even if rain is forecast, it doesn't mean it will just rain constantly. I have been to a few weddings where they were very good at finding those gaps to get some pictures in the dry, and the staff did things like wipe down chairs and tables to be used too then usher people outside. Make a thing of it, pictures with umbrellas up with you smiling away. You are mostly inside anyway even if outside is available in my experience.

Point is there is a scale between someone who technically goes over the limit on occasion, and people who are constantly pissed and will get aggressive to the point they have to be denied alcohol to have a simple meal in peace.

You can try but what is stopping them walking to whatever bar area there is and ordering it there, bringing it with them, pre-drinking, demanding it of a waiter which would get awkward as they would see people around them drinking - the drive for alcoholics to drink in any way they can would surprise you. Or maybe it wouldn't.

Do you find it gross/acceptable to use hair dryer in gyms to dry your feet?

There is something a bit grim about the idea of it, but it isn't logical. Honestly I just get as best dry as I can in whatever space there is, chuck some clothes on and worry about actually getting properly dry and comfortable later.

Why are hotels in the UK so expensive?

Posted by Random_Nobody1991@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 281 comments

I'm not sure, also it is a fixed thing rather than a bill that can rise overnight which their staff need to, you know, *live* so is just a base cost for them rather than the arbiter of their room price.

Have you moved from a city like Cardiff to the valleys? Or somewhere more rural?

I know a fair few people who have done it, the trains are excellent to a lot of towns on the valley lines if you want to get into Cardiff, the issue then is if you want to stay out late as if they end, it is a hell of a long taxi ride.

How would you spend a birthday alone?

I would have a wholesome day out personally. Trip to a national park, plan a hike, visit to a city on my list, something like that. Couple of drinks to finish the day in a nice beer garden, get home and put a film on and crack open a bottle of wine. Fancy doing that all tomorrow tbh.

Doubt it, they've got electric, water, heating, laundry, maintenance costs and all the rest of it. If the night porter is on a couple of quid more or less an hour that isn't the tipping point for them.

They should tailor it, I go on Instagram sometimes and end up in very odd rabbit holes - stuff like carpentry or plumbing tutorials in there among politics, music, it feeds more depending on what you linger on. That is how it keeps people hooked. One of the reasons I didn't like Tik Tok was it had brain dead memes and people doing dances so I left, maybe it isn't the same.

Any particular reason why not? Only real difference is a magazine can end, but I still remember having piles of them and many were just as inane in their content. The internet can have a wide scope, I "doomscroll" wikipedia sometimes, or newspaper sites - there is as much content there as an old fashioned encycopedia and more than the average newspaper.

Is hiking / rambling in UK for older people?

Posted by supremewuster@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 94 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

Plenty of younger people do it but older people maybe have more spare time they are willing to throw at it, and it is perfect for them as it is a slower form of exercise. When people say hiking here I associate it with weekend walks, pretty much anyone can and does get to the top of many of our biggest hills which are in reach from big cities in a day. In the US it may mean several days in the wildnerness.

Does not wanting to buy from B&M make me a snob?

Posted by ANuggetEnthusiast@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 127 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

It would be snobbish if their stuff was fine but you avoided it because of its associations. They are known for being cheap in build quality. Even the branded stuff - it is often a smaller pack than standard with an enticing fixed price like 99p but are better off in value with own brand or sometimes even a larger version of the same product elsewhere.

What are some non-tacky fathers day gifts?

I struggle too, as a Dad myself. Generally if I want something it is specific and related to my already existent hobbies. I have been given various "good" Dad things in the past though that are appreciated. Like an actually solid penknife, torch, beard trimmer, pan etc. Of the last for life variety rather than middle of Lidl that I tended to go for. But then year on year I accumulate these things and the list runs short. Just some nice nibbles is fine, some good cheese, nice bottle of beer or whisky, doesn't have to be crazy huge at all.

I'll always try to have his ethos in music. Which no matter how old or grumpy I get, I will try to seek out new and interesting music. Stuff that actual young people are making, independent labels, small venues, in quirky ways or places. I feel like the entirety of 6 music is basically him in radio station form in many ways. People are going to snark about him having groupies in the 1960s but they can write off basically any entertainer up to about 1998 if they genuinely care about that.

I wasn't that keen on his standup tbh, it was all about cats does countdown for me. So many fantastic moments, it was the most unexpected vehicle for humour, a word puzzle spin-off. But all the sections of bringing in a mascot, the celebrity guest in dictionary corner, Joe Wilkinson being wheeled out, special rounds etc - brilliant.

Is skipping the queue on a hike in the UK acceptable?

I thought people did this on Everest as there was only space for one person. Snowdon there is plenty of room, what are people queuing for? Is it that case of British people forming a queue out of nowhere, then getting upset that others aren't joining in.

Why do GP practices always require you to be there 10-15 mins early but always have you sat around for ages when there?

Posted by sachdamasta@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 86 comments

I have never seen this as a requirement, it is probably as if they ask people to be early, it is more likely they will be on time even if running late. Some people seem to take an appointment at 2pm meaning pulling into the car park at 2:01.

I feel like I would have at least ineptly tried to clean up the largest bits and put into what was remaining of the bottom of the glass until staff came over with some proper stuff and a brush. They probably reacted more to what they felt was lack of care and a shrug than anything else but that is on them, not you.

Google maps keeps offering some amazing narrow routes which suggest something like a 2 minute saving in time, I wonder if it actually is when they consider having to slow or stop for cars to pass. If it tells me to turn left and I see it is like some kind of cart track, I just nope and carry on.

terryjuicelawson@reddit

Probably people who work with people they like, for many it is a social life they would miss, as sad as that sounds. House - if they are happy then moving is a lot of effort but I at least hope they get it heavily renovated. I feel like that is what I would do, no real deep desire to have a mansion anywhere. Guess the same with a car. All this I guess can be done with absolute peace of mind. Their job will have zero stress as they could just leave. They can fix their house or move out next week. If the car dies, get another. They can buy whatever they want, give chunks to family and friends. It doesn't have to be played purely for sheer greed.

Is no AC common in expensive hotels around the UK?

terryjuicelawson@reddit

Probably more likely in a chain hotel like a Premier Inn, as they need it, the rooms would be a sweatbox otherwise. A large, airy Cornish hotel room you can open some windows and the sea breeze will be fine, I wouldn't even think about the need for AC tbh.

A tremendous amount of small mammals and insects die when cultivating vegetables. Think whole fields destroyed in one swoop. It isn't deliberate and they are seen as lesser than say a cow or pig, but it is an interesting philosophical point. Then there are some animals which I barely would describe as sentient, the likes of shellfish for example.

Drunk people need the toilet a lot and it can be a pain to keep going back and forth to maybe the one toilet in a house. If there is a bush nearby they may use it. Outside of this kind of context, or if people are desperate and out in nature, it is not normal no.
