Does anyone actually like their conservatory?

I have never seen or experienced a good one. I prefer the trend for people to extend out their kitchen with big windows and skylights as that seems like a much better space for entertaining all year round.

The best ones are just put us in a room with food and especially drinks. It is natural then. The worst are where they deliberately mix up teams to get to know each other, forced fun, challenges etc. I only ever recall wishing they would just end.

How unsafe are the roads for cyclists?

Posted by pinkestpenny@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 80 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

I think they are OK personally but you need to have your wits about you and there are some roads I would just entirely avoid. Dual carriageways, country lanes, ones where cars just expect to do 60 - don't bother. It can seem a good idea to be meek, slow and cycle in the gutter but then cars do dodgy close overtakes even more so be confident and take the lane and you'll be fine.

I've got memories of there being tactics to it. Like you wouldn't drive off in a car baking in the sun straight to a motorway. You'd let it cool first or drive around with windows open to get the heat out. Now people can have electric cars they can start from sat on their sofa to get it warm / cold - amazing really.

Do Brits have their class photographs clicked in school?

Posted by Historical_Ad3663@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 61 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

Class photos only really seemed to be a primary school thing. I have all mine, we had a few of the kids. But then secondary nothing, other than individual photos. Year book we did have one, as far back as the 90s but it was the work of a few students and really wasn't very good.

What is the worst British sports match you’ve ever watched?

Posted by Jezzaq94@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 128 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

The World Cup is often a poor example too, teams can be too cagey and games boring and drawn out. Some nations are notorious for diving and theatrics and they *hate* that too, almost as much as their Men's team being average at best.

Why do many people around the world hate England in sports such as football, rugby, cricket, etc.?

Posted by Jezzaq94@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 205 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

Part of it is understanding. And it works both ways too, English fans can have a rant or insult other nationalities and they will know about it. Someone could be doing far worse in Slovenian and no one would know.

Finally interested in football, where to start?

Posted by Ryndomaru@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 79 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

I went off football for a while, can't quite recall why but I ended up out of touch. Started not to recognise players, forgot what league teams were in or new call-ups to the England squad, that kind of thing. But it is surprising how quickly you pick it up if you watch. The season has ended but you may find some kind of season review you can watch, once it starts again just immerse yourself in it. Watch Match of the Day every week. Do fantasy football - this is excellent for getting to know random niche defenders and the like. It is a soap opera basically.

Should I stop boycotting Brewdog and Wetherspoons?

Posted by BarryTownCouncil@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 73 comments

terryjuicelawson@reddit

I got a mixed box of ten Brewdogs recently, thought they were alright. Cheap in Tesco, took them away for a caravan weekend. Perfect for that sort of casual thing as an alternative to a load of lagers or whatever, but without going as far as picking out bottles of local artisan or craft stuff for triple the price. I feel like that is their niche now, at least for me.

It is an easy way of instilling discipline, that is the core of it. Everything else is a mild positive or excuse. Schools don't care if someone is bullied for having the wrong brand of t-shirt.

It seems like every other US sport is heavily geared up with the college system, and the leagues run the teams and the whole setup. Association Football the world over is independent clubs, players come through academies in a more natural way. What options really are there for some kid in the middle of the US who is an aspiring footballer to become professional. They'd almost all need to go to Europe or South America.

At the same time those parents who think they are perfect as their kids never have any access to a device or TV, there is a little more to it than that. My experience too is when those kids get to being a teenager, they can be rather naive and out of touch with pop culture and just what teenagers are talking about.

When you have matey in lane 2 doing 45 with no one in front, no one to the left, and a queue trying to overtake it doesn't matter what gap people leave ultimately. He needs to get a move on or get out of the way.

The crown estate pays for itself really and London does well out of a big royal event so I am a bit ambivalent about stuff like this. It won't be anywhere near the scale of the Queen, pretty sure that will be the last one like that basically ever.

Part of that is not everyone does speed up. You get people still pootling along at 50 in the middle lane, and a snake of people queue trying to overtake which can back up and go even slower than 50. If everyone just got a move on, there would be no issues. But that is human nature really.

terryjuicelawson@reddit

I see a lot of new houses and renovations coming with a heat pump these days, you never know. My thoughts on air con is people are dead keen on it during a heatwave then entirely forget about it the week after when it is cold again. it is not like central heating where you need it all winter.

Around here you can get people complaining about bikes, but the roads are firstly narrow because cars are parked lining both sides. Then two cars can't pass each other because they are too wide. The road layout means you can barely get past 20 (the actual speed limit) anyway. But people do like to blame things that they feel separate from I guess.

What brands are the kids wearing these days?

It does thankfully seem to have dipped a little. Some are into their brands for sure but when I was a lad you had to have a "name" on everything. Coat, bag, school shoes, trainers, the lot. If you were seen wearing something basic from Primark you'd be mocked. Now all the big clothes shops make things that are fairly on trend and affordable and we are all the better for it.

Funny really some of this stuff as I associate North Face or Berghaus with middle aged, sort of middle class wannabe hikers who actually only wear it on the school run. Will they be in Dry Robes next I wonder. It is all just whatever is pricy in sports shops, dictates it entirely.

I like the idea but it can literally overlap with Easter, I think recently St George's day even moved because it fell on the weekend itself. May Day tends to have rather English things like church fetes and Morris Dancing and the like without any issues so I don't feel like some sort of national day needs to be forced in there somehow. I think I'd actually rather have one in June or July - nicer weather.

Did you guys learn the difference between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in schools?

Posted by InfernalClockwork3@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

It may have been touched upon in discussions but it was not part of the History curriculum in secondary school, it can be dropped for GCSE too. Even so people may well have been listening to basically everything but not have perfect recall, try doing some maths papers now and see if you were "listening" judging by the result you get.

My understanding was it fills the void where girls basically don't play American Football, and there is a college process for them. Professionally there is mostly a lack of competition. The Men's team is against the entire world with an established setup, and most talented sports people go into other sports.

The meaning behind it is messy though, even if the timing is right. One that sits around that time that people can use as the day they have a party for Halloween / Guy Fawkes and set off fireworks makes sense though. Call it some kind of coming of Winter festival or something. Only thing then is at that time of year people tend to celebrate inside in the evening anyway.

Not really as people tend to do stuff in the evening, it is also only a rather modern thing where people go OTT on the dressing up and party side of things. The day after in many ways makes more sense, then people can recover from the party - rather like we have new year's day, not the eve.
