What living Brit is worthy of a state funeral when they die?

I'm going to say David Attenborough for his conservation efforts across his life and reaching the age of 100.
a_wee_ghostie@reddit
Monty Don but I hope that's a very long way away.
LaDreadPirateRoberta@reddit
Billy Connolly.
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
He's Scottish
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Why the actually fucking fuck am downvoted
jar_jar_LYNX@reddit
BECAUSE SCOTTISH PEOPLE ARE BRITISH
BRITISH DOES NOT MEAN "ENGLISH"
BRITISH IS ANYONE FROM THE UK
SCOTLAND IS IN UK
Sorry, I had to shout but you seemed like you really needed it explained to you
mofojones36@reddit
British is anyone from Britain, this does not include Northern Ireland
Hope this helps
jar_jar_LYNX@reddit
It does when it involves Unionists. Being British in their whole thing.
Bufobufolover24@reddit
Because Scotland is part of Britain, so a Scottish person is British.
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Have you consulted Scotland on that statement
PurpleFirebird@reddit
Yes
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Ask the Scots
jar_jar_LYNX@reddit
I'm Scottish and I'm telling you that as a UK citizen, Connolly is British
Are you American? I feel like it's always yanks that go around defending Scottish people on our behalf on this one
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
I'm Irish
To_Be_Commenting@reddit
That's worse.
jar_jar_LYNX@reddit
All those Presbetarians speaking Ulster Scots with Scottish last names up North - what do they call themselves?
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Yeah yeah that's right Celtic Rangers
Brave_Assumption6@reddit
Cheer up Celtic won the fuckin' league this year
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Billy Connolly would no more describe himself as British than the fucking man in the moon would
JTemperance-esque@reddit
He spoke out against independence and was mates with the fucking royal family - including Prince Andrew by the way - so I think you may have overestimated his anti-UK fervour
Brave_Assumption6@reddit
I didn't know this but if true then it really is an ironic outcome to their claim.
Bufobufolover24@reddit
r/confidentlyincorrect Britain is the main island containing England, Wales and Scotland. The UK is Britain plus Norther Ireland. England is just England. It would be wrong to say a Scottish person were English, because they’re not, but saying a Scottish person is British is correct, because Scotland is part of Britain! You can literally just google “what is the difference between Britain and England”, or even “is Scotland part of Britain” and you will find plenty of answers.
Corvid187@reddit
Doesn't change the fact he is still British, and would potentially qualify for a state funeral
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
I must remember that the last time the Scots had bon fires etc when ye lost go Italy
DrinkingHippo@reddit
Y'ok hun?
MaggieSmith_49@reddit

Kind-Enthusiasm-7799@reddit
Do you know what Great Britain means bro 😂. United Kingdom?
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Do you
....
eighteenseventy2@reddit
Even if scotland was an Independent country, not part of the union. He would still be Scottish and British because scotland is still part of the island of Britain, geographically.
It doesn't matter that I consider myself Scottish and not British, to anyone else, factually I am both.
(Until we figure out a way to seperate the land at the border and float away, somewhere warmer hopefully)
Southern-Ad4477@reddit
Mate, he is literally a Knight of the Realm (of the United Kingdom).
lockinber@reddit
Because he is Scottish so therefore he is also British. For example I am English but also British. In the UK we have several ways of describing our nationality.
Brickscrap@reddit
You can be pro-Scotland, pro-indy, anti-UK etc, but even if for example Scotland left the UK, we'd still all be British, because Scotland is a part of Great Britain. It's a geographical construction, not a physical one.
Grimdotdotdot@reddit
Sir Billy Connolly, CBE?
He's not just British, he's a fucking Commander of the British Empire.
LaDreadPirateRoberta@reddit
Well done. That’s why I suggested him.
Benbucketts@reddit
I think they might be a bit special ( or murican)
Jeffuk88@reddit
You seen the new Scottish passports?
Palealedad@reddit
Erm...
TeHNeutral@reddit
Just an all around top guy
MaggieSmith_49@reddit
Billy Connolly is Scottish not British
joeparni@reddit
So being Scottish means you aren't British? Do you know what British means?
JohnnySchoolman@reddit
Ireland is in the British Isles too, it's just not Great.
joeparni@reddit
Britain is eng/scot/wales
UK is above + NI
British Isles is above + Ireland
Nobody would ever consider irish people as "a Brit"
JohnnySchoolman@reddit
Yeah, that's what I said. Ireland isn't great enough to be British.
LaDreadPirateRoberta@reddit
Then he shouldn’t have accepted the MBE. I think he’s Scottish, British, European and a citizen of the world. Nobody’s accusing him of being English.
Palealedad@reddit
Ok, I hope you are sitting down... Scotland is part of Britain.
Lordhartley@reddit
Not after he joked about that ISIS UK taxi driver hostage and get on with cutting his head off, he should have been stripped of the knighthood.
patchyj@reddit
I dont think those with knighthoods should ever be stripped of them. Take Jimmy Saville: most prolific pedophile in British history and so many people, including royalty, knew. Margaret Thatcher pushed for his knighthood and he got one. Stripping him of a knighthood would be akin to the royals disavowing him and saying "we didnt know" which they should never be allowed to do.
Every disgraced knight should forever keep the title so we can eventually see how toxic and stupid that tradition is.
LeastInsurance8578@reddit
Definitely worthy and I’d add Stephen Fry as well
PorFavorNoMore@reddit
What, as some sort of sacrificial tribute?
Theroosterami@reddit
Was going to say this, glad to see it as one of the top comments. Absolute legend.
fundytech@reddit
David Attenborough and rowan Atkinson
Both absolute British legends, and probably the only people I can think of in the entire country that everybody loves and nobody hates.
QueenSashimi@reddit
Rowan Atkinson is definitely not universally beloved. Just ask James Acaster.
a_wee_ghostie@reddit
Nope, used to love the guy but I can't forgive him for stealing James Acaster's girl.
Ok-Explanation1990@reddit
My MiL knew Rowan Atkinson personally and doesn't like him. Said he seemed quite self-entitled.
AgentCirceLuna@reddit
I seem to remember a friend saying he’s one of those STEMlord people who has a degree in science and thinks anyone who doesn’t is an idiot
beavertownneckoil@reddit
I mean you can easily tell this from his interviews. Even though he doesn't do anything bad on camera, you can kinda tell he's sick of people and is snooty
Zavodskoy@reddit
I met him at Goodwood once and he was nice to me and my dad though that might have been cause all my dad wanted to talk to him about was his car and not his comedy / acting career
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I am never quite sure about this, he is probably just a normal person. Sometimes they get this reputation as they didn't want to stop and chat about Mr Bean with another random person that day or do an impression on demand.
paradoxbound@reddit
No he has an ego and a superiority complex. His exit from “Not the Nine O’Clock News. Revealed that early on. Very talented and I enjoy some of his work but not Mr Bean much. He isn’t National Treasure material.
Organic-Apricot-6330@reddit
I've been told he's a dickhead from a colleague who did a job next door to his house. Could be rubbish bit the anecdotes stack up
Acrobatic-Ad584@reddit
who is not universally beloved either
AnonymousTimewaster@reddit
Whoosh
ExtravagentLasagne@reddit
I believe Rowan Atkinson also semi did that to Stephen Fry. I'm sure in one of his autobiographies Fry mentions that the only woman that he may have considered dating was taken by Atkinson because it was known Fry is gay
Equal_Membership_923@reddit
Imagine the shame of being dumped for Mr Bean. That has to hurt.
Mishka_The_Fox@reddit
Have you seen his car collection?
Equal_Membership_923@reddit

"I just can't believe it. They're doing me a bloody state funeral. Can you believe it? For one thing, they're throwing me a big party at taxpayers expense, and I can't even go, cos I'll be dead. Awful. Awful. All the taxpayers, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer, going 'oh you know that James Acaster. Yeah? We're paying for his party.'. They'll all hate me! And I can't even go. No thanks, Mr. State. No funeral for me.".
barkley87@reddit

Oh I meant I'm shouldn't be in this sub reddit. I'm also still in Australia and have only ever visited once for about a month. Absolutely loved it though and would love to live over there for a while.
And i think James is a hilarious. Though there might be an issue with overexposure. Which is common with most countries/comedians but seems to be real issue in the UK. Celebrity game show anyone?

spacecatbiscuits@reddit
Yeah but his girlfriend loves him enough to make up for it
JohnnyNoodle97@reddit
Neither is Attenborough if people actually meet him. He can be extremely entitled/snooty just like people mentioned for Atkinson. Attenborough just spends most of his times out in the sticks speaking to animals not people so he's avoided having to interact with those he looks down on and maintained a positive reputation.
resident_queerdo@reddit
"Just ask James Acaster" is the most efficient way of proving no person in question is universally beloved. 😅
CaffeinatedDaddy@reddit
Nobody is universally loved.
Anxious-Association7@reddit
Statement of a not so famous person like James Acaster 🤣 Even his ex picked Rowan Atkinson over him
Rowan is one of the most recognisable currently living breathing Brit
BillWilberforce@reddit
Only because James Acaster's girlfriend loved Rowan more than she loved James.
minadequate@reddit
Ex girlfriend. She was living with Acaster. She now has a kid with Atkinson.
dan7777777@reddit
Who?
Defiant-Ad8425@reddit
Definitely not Rowan Atkinson, but yes to David Attenborough, there are very few others who should have a state funeral
MojoMomma76@reddit
Judi Dench and Helen Mirren?
Old_Top623@reddit
"Mirren first visited Israel in 1967 after the Six Day War and volunteered on Kibbutz HaOn next to the Sea of Galilee. She also hitchhiked around the country.
“I witnessed things that were wrong,” she said of her visit. “I saw Arabs being thrown out of their houses in Jerusalem. But it was just the extraordinary magical energy of a country just beginning to put its roots in the ground. It was an amazing time to be here.”
Hmm.
SoSpeaksGalactus@reddit
To be fair, I volunteered at a kibbutz as a wide-eyed and naive 19 year old (I am now 53). It was experiencing first hand the casual racism aimed at Israeli Arabs (who I was working with) and the hideous attitude towards the Palestinians that shaped the strongly held views I still hold today. Had I not volunteered, I never would have visited the “occupied territories” and seen Israel’s brutality for myself.
I think part of the reason Isreal encourages volunteers is to expose them to Israeli propaganda, but most of my cohort left with the same dim view of Israel as I did. And this was at a time when Clinton, Arafat and Rabin almost had a peace deal…
sadovsky@reddit
Wow she’s trash. Didn’t know this about her.
moderatefairgood@reddit
The phrase you are looking for is “rubbish.”
sadovsky@reddit
I’m a gamer, trash is baked into my vocabulary at this point lol
arturoui@reddit
Volunteering on a kibbutz was the backpacker thing to do in the 60s. I knew people who did it, they were very naive. Probably driven by generalised guilt and sympathy over the holocaust, there was an exculpatory and romanticised image of Israel in the west that was at odds with the realities
Brave_Assumption6@reddit
Chris Tarrant? Jeremy Clarkson?
MojoMomma76@reddit
Oh come on. These women have spent decades in English theatre and British films. And have received damehoods. You choose to compare them to a washed up light entertainers, at least one of whom has been sacked for physically assaulting a crew member? Grow up.
Brave_Assumption6@reddit
I've only seen Judi in Bond films and never seen anything from Helen so why would I have that interest? On the other hand I have lots of memories and entertainment from the other two charismatic gaffers who both hosted one of the highest rated TV shows at their prime.
SatisfactionMoney426@reddit
Clarkson, but only if May and Hammond have to have some sort of self-build / race to St. Paul's. Possibly via the Thames ?
HotPotatoWithCheese@reddit
Paul McCartney

He lost this right after his incessant replaying of "Hey Jude" at every event he's appeared at in the last ten years. Minus points for poor judgement!

allywillow@reddit
Never could stand Paul McCartney
terryjuicelawson@reddit
He seems like the person it is hard to really hate like that. He seems eternally optimistic and rather humble considering he has been world famous since barely older than a teenager. Unless that in itself is grating.
Simon_Denton@reddit
I’m sure he’s distraught to hear that
utf-16@reddit
Not as distraught as we are every time we hear the frog chorus 😎
catsaregreat78@reddit

arfur-sixpence@reddit
At least spell the name of the group correctly. Or are you referring to insects?
Netlifeathome@reddit
All one and the same to me.
arfur-sixpence@reddit
Well, as they say "you can't fix stupid".
Netlifeathome@reddit
You believe it's stupid but it's an opinion I have of the band and the people and you don't have to like it.
balf999@reddit
Quite a lot of people don't seem to like Paul McCartney, although I've never understood why. He always comes across as good humoured and remarkably grounded to me.
No-Snow-9605@reddit
What makes you think that ? He is only a talented musician.
Ok_Shirt983@reddit
Wings are shit and everything he put out after the Beatles is shit. He also seemed like a smug bastard when he walked past me in Soho and said "alright lads". So whilst I do not hate him, I definitely do not love Paul McCartney, and consider him as a bit of an embarrassing uncle type who was cool back in the day and hasn't quite realised he's in his 80s and should knock it off.
EnglishButFrench@reddit
McCartney has some classic albums post-Beatles.

foxyfree@reddit
Elton John too
NoAdmittanceX@reddit
I'd have to add Brian Blessed to that list
DareDemon666@reddit
As with other comments, Attenborough is a bolter given all he's done with his life's work and a compkete lack of any irredeemable traits or history. It's all good stuff of which he should be proud, and yet, he doesn't even stoop to that minor sin.
Atkinson on the other hand is decidedly less sure a say. Beloved by many yes, but is not without discourse and headlines.
Background-Way9698@reddit
Rowan Atkinson is a knob, my sister worked at a restaurant he frequented and he was acting impolitely to her for no reason
inide@reddit
Rowan Atkinson keeps getting involved in politics, often on the wrong side. The common thread of his position is "I should have the right to insult whoever I want", and so he often comes forward to petition against anti-discrimination laws.
-TheHumorousOne-@reddit
As much as I love Rowan Atkinson I think it sets the bar too low. There are quite a few legendary British actors who are universally loved. Ian McKellen and Michael Caine just to name a couple.
WearSensibleShoes@reddit
I don't think Ian and Michael are a couple?
Ok_Judge7833@reddit
Is Michael Caine universally beloved?
Vivid-Bottle789@reddit
I can't stand Rowan Atkinson, as gifted as he is. The last Mr Bean sketch I saw him in was about Mr Bean going to church and getting everything wrong, including giving the woman next to him an uninvited French kiss during the Peace. It was cringe-making! Or maybe I have a faulty sense of humour.
nooneknowsmehereeee@reddit
I’m with you, I cannot stand Mr Bean, it’s not funny.
PurpleBlock25@reddit
At first it was great - almost a throwback to silent movies and perfect for Atkinson's physical awkward comedy. But then they pushed it and pushed it until he did things like end up with a turkey on his head. And made him speak. Ugh.
-TheHumorousOne-@reddit
The Turkey was from the Christmas special? I personally loved that episode
Bad_UsernameJoke94@reddit
"Have you got the turkey on?"
Ok-Explanation1990@reddit
I think for some reason Mr Bean seems more popular by people from other countries than it is asking a British audience. But to be fair, Atkinson has done far more than just Mr Bean.
mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm@reddit
Nah dude youre looking at it in the wrong way.
Rowan Atkinson is Mr Bean, and Mr Bean is a cultural icon.
Across the world people know Mr Bean. You dont need to speak English to enjoy it.
I went travelling, in the most remote places you'd get "The Beatles" "The Queen" "Mr Bean"
The show was distributed world wide. It was a fairly cheap show at only 15 episodes. A lot of countries would chop up the footage where it made sense to and just play it in between their own programs.
Due_Resolution2634@reddit
Rowan Atkinson is a bit of a cunt.
Guilty_Public5356@reddit
Rowan Atkinson is not a very nice person. So many stories about him being rude to fans and people he's working with. Sir David on the other hand is a saint.

That is and always has been the Spitting Image way, though.
40 years ago by the way, that song

I mean, I hate Attenborough. His politics are atrocious, he's a big Malthusian "too many humans" weirdo, which is the kind of opinion an edgy 12 year old has before doing literally any research or thinking about it. He's just posh and the British public are pathetic and doe eyed when they see posh people on the BBC
triffid_boy@reddit
Rowan Atkinson comes across as a bit of a bellend in the columns he's written, and he's not really done all that much that someone like Stephen Fry or Hugh Laurie hasn't also done and more (and both seem more likeable) - I don't think they would reasonably get state funerals either.
Attenborough is hard to argue against.
Doylio@reddit
I’m not bothered at all about rowan atkinson. I feel like Mitchell and Webb are more prominent British comics among my age range (25-40), but ymmv. I think peep show is more widely referenced now.

The tampongate stuff is still stuck in my head. As is the fact his brother is a wrong un of the worst order, and his mother paid off his accusers, with money she essentially accrued from us rank and file taxpayers. Great.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
The crown estate pays for itself really and London does well out of a big royal event so I am a bit ambivalent about stuff like this. It won't be anywhere near the scale of the Queen, pretty sure that will be the last one like that basically ever.
20dogs@reddit
I have never heard of tampongate. Are you talking about how Charles wanted to be a tampon or whatever? Is that a "gate"?
BinkyLopBunny@reddit
It’s a reference to Watergate. Any controversial event has ‘gate’ put after it.
20dogs@reddit
That's not the part I was confused about lol, I'm familiar with that. Also it's more meant for a scandal.

I think Judi Dench and maybe Helen Mirren, as two of our greatest actors, might be worthy and have widespread support, especially Dame Judi.
Everyone else seems pretty divisive. Lewis Hamilton is, statistically, the greatest Formula One driver of all time and a strong British success story, but there's a surprisingly large number of F1 fans, even British ones, who despise him. I was at a science fiction thing a few years ago (2022) I think and BRIAN BLESSED was there. He gave like a two hour monologue (there was another guy on the stage who was supposed to be interviewing him but he didn't get a word in edgeways). So after it's over, he gets up and as he's walking off the stage he trips and falls. The whole holiday camp goes silent. You can hear everyone thinking "Oh god have we just killed Brian Blessed?"
He gets up, a little shakily and waves his hand at everyone and there's an almighty cheer. Someone might have shouted "Brian's alive!" He sits on the edge of the stage for a little while then just walks off.
It was quietly horrifying seeing that because everyone there adored him and he is one of those people who you expect to live forever.

King Charles, for obvious reasons. Camilla, the people's mistress, she deserves it for being vilified for decades when she was with Charles first and had to watch a literal teenager marry the love of her life because she was considered too old, then when she went on Eastenders and they completely disrespected her when Linda said the next episode "wish it had been Diana" one day I think we'll look back on how Camilla has been viewed as opposed to how sainted Diana was and think "eh?". I'm no royalist. But Diana fucking sucked!!!! So manipulative. Entitled. Spiteful. Had affairs herself, multiple and was viewed as the victim when Charles just had the 1 affair, with a woman he was with already when he was forced to marry Di (which she FULLY knew about!!!!) And later married when he was allowed, Di didn't end up with any of the men she cheated with, that wasn't love. She was a social climber, and she courted the press. Had no time for anyone unless they could do something for her. Unless the cameras where there, then she was doing the MOST. Camilla was the victim in all of it. And Diana has been Saintfield, when she was a vile narcissist. Camilla was just literally dating her own long term boyfriend, Diana married a man who was in love with another woman and WITH that woman openly, because it made her famous and gave her power, she was a fame hungry, spoilt bratt. And then played the victim when SHE was the other woman and knew it from day 1. Camilla has only shown grace in the face of constant abuse from the brittish public. We owe her. She's the queen of mistresses and a symbol of true love prevailing in the face of bratty spoilt rich girls using their dainty frames and miserable faces to appear as vulnerable little perpetual victims. Camilla is the face of big strong women who overcome manipulative small demon women (we all know them) and they're victim bullshit.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Diana was also a very inexperienced teen of 20 when she got married and 19 when engaged. She got set up her family as much as the Royal Family. And she didn't have the best of childhoods. She did fairly well with the hand she was given and raised awareness of landmines and changed attitudes to AIDs. She also did a lot more unpleasant things around dating other people's husbands and had what seems a love-hate affair with the press.
The whole situation was just very sad - Charles should have been allowed to marry Camelia and four people would have been much happier. Princesses Margaret and Anne had equally checkered experiences due to the restrictions of being Royal.
You can be supportive of Camilla without demonising Diana. And if you do, then better demonise the Queen too - if she'd stayed out of her sister's and son's love lives, a lot of tragedy could have been averted.
Vivid-Bottle789@reddit
Blimey! I think Camilla does some very worthwhile work to promote literacy and support female victims of violence. Whereas Diana had her own charitable interests, some of which have been picked up by her sons. I'm sure they both have/have had a very good side, as well as any negativity we might have seen.

My hottest take is that we might want to hang fire on a state funeral for Attenborough….
kishmishari@reddit
Because of what he said about giving aid to Ethiopians during a famine or his racist overpopulation views?
laudable_lurker@reddit
How are his views racist...?
kishmishari@reddit
"What are all these famines in Ethiopia? What are they about?"
"They're about too many people for too little land. That's what it's about. And we are blinding ourselves. We say, get the United Nations to send them bags of flour. That's barmy."
“We keep putting on programmes about famine in Ethiopia; that’s what’s happening. Too many people there. They can’t support themselves – and it’s not an inhuman thing to say. It’s the case.”
All are quotes from David Attenborough. He believes that there is an overpopulation issue with Africa and Asia and that this is the primary contributor to our environmental destruction. Not considering the fact that Africa consumes 40x less than Americans, and the USA produces 3 to 4 times the total emissions of the entire continent of Africa. There is plenty online about how the overpopulation myth is racist and should instead look at consumption.
laudable_lurker@reddit
You never explained how any of his views are racist. Just because the regions in which Attenborough believes there is overpopulation aren't in Europe doesn't make him racist. Believing that we are overpopulated is not inherently racist.
I can't find anything to suggest that Attenborough sees overpopulation in Africa and Asia as the main factor in human damage to the environment. It's plain to realise that harmful emissions have likely done the most damage. I don't see Attenborough denying that emissions are the biggest factor. Moreover, he doesn't ignore Western over-consumption. In 2020, he said we should 'curb excess capitalism' in the West and live more economically for the environment's sake. In the same year, he also criticised the waste of resources, saying 'The world is not a fruit bowl from which we can just take whatever we wish.'
I think you fail to realise that Attenborough's argument IS still about consumption, just taking into account the consequences of consumption. He's not against human beings but population growth. There is a point at which you must concede that growth is unsustainable or otherwise more harmful than beneficial--every ecosystem has its limits. Attenborough just happens to think we've already reached that point, and is looking to see where population growth is happening. Asia and Africa are already the continents with the most people, and are the main continents where population growth is concentrated. By comparison, much of Europe and North America isn't even growing enough to replace those who die.
kishmishari@reddit
Attenborough only mention consumption after being repeatedly called out for his racism. And he still pushes his racist views.
Again, overpopulation is a racist myth. One that you're now pushing.

I just watched a video on a man called Richard Dunn! Used to be a boxer. Fought Muhammad Ali, lost, then went on to lose a couple more fights before hanging the gloves up. Done some work around the world when he finished boxing. Got seriously injured. Then, he opened up a sports centre that was named after him (he didn't know it would be named after him), the Richard Dunn sports centre in Bradford if anyone knows it? I don't, luckily I haven't been to Bradford in my life and I don't plan to. Now, he is in a wheelchair, but there's a very recent interview of him online.
Attenborough, and Rowan Atkinson, sure they're good people. But, we only really recognise them because they're in our faces. Nobody really recognises Richard Dunn, Channing Day, Joshua Leakey, Moses Itauma, some of our comedy icons (Sean Lock didn't really get recognition I don't think until he passed away). Britain has some raw talent here, and a lot of it is untapped, and/or unseen.

One of the top posts in both UK and main motorcycle subreddits and posted in every biker facebook group i have seen. I thought the previous commenter was referencing that video, not the original Ronnie Pickering video

I live near him and see him regularly walking around town. He always has time for anyway who stops him to say hello and loves having a good chat with them. He just seems so insanely nice. So your love is very well placed.
But the first time I saw him after his wife died, he look so utterly defeated. It absolutely broke my cold, black heart.
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
I've met Palin twice on a book signing and behind the scenes at the Monty Python O2 live show (VIP ticket). He's exactly as it says on the tin.
BinkyLopBunny@reddit
I have a counterpoint to that. I worked at a bookshop he did at signing at around 20 years ago. He refused to sit in our back room for half an hour (it had been good enough for Bruce Forsyth and Stephen Fry) so we put him in the manager’s office. He then spilt his entire drink all over the computer and his own trousers and was a bit of a diva the entire time.

Definitely not Martin Freeman. He's a bit of a dickhead and is basically just an A list actor. Well paid actors are absolutely not qualified for state funerals.
Crunchie64@reddit
A List?
Are you thinking of his brother, Morgan?
reo_reborn@reddit
I was sad to find that out. Seems like he doesn't have many friends left on the inside of the business and plenty of rumors say he's the reason why they can't do a new Sherlock as bine if the cast like him
Fufflewaffle@reddit
I went to a talk at the Palladium from Bob Odenkirk for his new book a few years ago. Martin Freeman is the guest he bought on to ask questions and talk with and he was so rude and unlikeable. Rik Mayall should retrospectively get one.
the_Athereon@reddit
Pretty sure he's the only good choice.
Very very rare to be given a state funeral outside of the royals. And Churchill only got one for being such a good personal friend of the royals.
jsm97@reddit
Last time it wasn't a Royal or a politician was the Unknown Soldier - And if you don't know count him there was a couple of other military officers throughout the 19th century and if you only count a purely civilian background you have to go back to Isaac Newton. It would certainly be a huge break from precedent I can't really see them doing
Fun-Communication660@reddit
I feel like bringing back state funerals for your Isaac Newton types does not feel like breaking precedent, but firmly setting it.
In an ideal world it would be those who contributed the most who get the state funeral. A good litmus test would be that there is no reasonable argument that the person didn't contribute much more than they recieved (plus state funeral) e.g. a PM whose personal wealth went from 2 million to 15 million as they presided over an unprecented 5 year period of growth and social progress in the UK DOESNT COUNT. It's not an inpossibly high bar, you are talking about once in a generation types. And i think Attenborough does cross that threshold. Sure there was not a ton of scientific contributions because he is not a scientist, but what he himself contributed to conservation surpasses any personal gain of his, and it's not a 5 year blip either. You really can't argue that it could have been someone else at any point. Anyway, public servants, scientists conservationists and writers can get state funerals this way, instead of Andrew Mountbatton-Windsors family.
ChrisWidnes@reddit
That's not the only reason Churchill got one, let's be realistic.
setokaiba22@reddit
Churchill was also a huge reason we succeeded in WW2 let’s be fair
Comrade_pirx@reddit

If you've managed to get yourself onto Reddit, then you can probably look up all sorts of historical info. In which case, what can be said in a Reddit comment to add to this body of knowledge you've already ignored?
Dry-Magician1415@reddit
Anybody who's study world history for more than about 5 minutes already knows the answer. No it doesn't.
Daveddozey@reddit
There are very few people pivotal in history. If Armstrong hadn’t landed on the moon someone else would. If bell hadn’t invented the phone someone else would. America would be discovered eventually. If Hitler hadn’t come to power someone else would, maybe more successfully, maybe less.
But Churchill does seem to be one. Without him we’d have had Halifax and appeasement of not outright surrender. Whether Stalin could have defeated Germany without the western front, or at least until Germany developed a nuclear bomb, is unclear
Most people are products of history. Some times though history is a product of a person.
PurpleFirebird@reddit
I'm gonna try and remember that last line, because it's brilliant
Azuras-Becky@reddit
Winston Churchill was a vile, drunk, misogynistic racist, but he was also an expert politician, a veteran soldier and military innovator from the previous war, a brilliant leader, and a deliverer of morale-boosting speeches that has never been matched. He's the wartime leader to which people compare all other wartime leaders for a reason.
I'm not one for counterfactuals, but it's probably not inaccurate to say that if Winston Churchill had decided to sit that one out, things would have gone much worse not just for Britain, but for the entire Western world.
That's not to say that he didn't fuck-up many more times than once, but of all the people who've ever received a state funeral, outside of people like Newton, Nelson, and the Duke of Wellington, there have been worse fecking recipients. Including nearly every royal and particularly Thatcher.
WorcsBloke@reddit
Isaac Newton was a very unpleasant man. Arguably the hate is overdone a little, but for example when Robert Hooke said he deserved partial credit for one of Newton's discoveries, Newton vindictively removed Hooke's name from Principia Mathematica. He did something similar to John Flamsteed, and stole and published Flamsteed's astronomical notes before Flamsteed was ready to do so. I think Thatcher (the real version, not the comic-book villain) was a better person than Newton, and I'm certainly no fan of hers. I
TheFlyingScotsman60@reddit
If he hadn't been in the right place, at the right time we'd all be speaking German.
Corvid187@reddit
He kept Britain in the war by seeing off the attempt of Chamberlain's cabinet to install a pro-appeasement member as PM. He was also instrumental in getting the big three powers on side and cooperating with each other more or less. There's also the fluffier side of keeping morale up and 'selling' the allied effort to the UK and the world in the darkest period of the conflict.
For the first two at least he probably deserved one.

Sure. That contributed. But that alone wasn't enough.

Princess Anne - end of an era
Daveddozey@reddit
What era?
She’s a horse rider right?
I get Liz 2 as an era, but some random royal?
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
If you think she is a random royal, then you are kind of ignoring what royalty does in UK. She's probably the hardest working senior royal when it comes to using the institution to bring recognition to less well known charities (300 of them).
Of the organisations she helped sponser, some are Carers' Trust, Save the Children UK, St John's Ambulance. As just a rider, she competed in the Olympics and Europeans as well as been a member of the IOC. She's a rider in the same way Sarah Radcliffe runs marathons.
End of an era as in royalty not being celebrities where the purpose was to go to events, talks etc to provide a setting for others to shine not be the diamond yourself.
Vivid-Bottle789@reddit
Princess Anne is hardly 'random' as a direct descendant of QE2! And in fact would have been 2nd in line to the throne when 'Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor' was growing up, if not for the archaic (sexist) law of succession and may prevent him developing some of the character flaws that put him in his current position.
Daveddozey@reddit
Using the word archaic to describe something about the monarchy, but not the monarchy itself?
ObjectiveHornet676@reddit
I love David Attenborough, but there's absolutely no way he deserves a state funeral. Outside of royalty, only politicians and service members have ever received one - the last being Winston Churchill (Thatcher had a ceremonial funeral, not a state one).

Sure-Recognition-262@reddit
Realistically, the only living brits likely to receive one are King Charles, Prince William and Prince George.
That is because it is very rare indeed for someone other than the monarch to have a state funeral - there has only been once since the Second World War - Winston Churchill.
Even expanding it to "Ceremonial Funerals" only adds another 4 non-royals in that same timeframe. 3 were Field Marshals in the Second World War, and the 4th (Thatcher) was PM during a defensive war.
Based on the above, the only realistic chance of there being anyone other than those 3 royals is if the world gets even madder and we have another war.
Nudie-64@reddit
There was a big celebration when Thatcher died. Up here in Scotland anyway.

So the criteria have pretty strict entry conditions

David Attenborough? He was very well paid to talk over footage. It's hardly going to Beirut to negotiate for hostage release and being captured for 5 years by Islamic Jihad. Or facing fire to rescue other men.

I think he was out of the office quite a bit tbf - and probably didn’t spend a lot of time hunting for leopard seals at the TOTP studio either

Plus Ringo Starr. What's even more remarkable is that Ringo Starr grew up with so many health issues he wasn't expected to survive, yet he did and has thrived since. That alone was amazing.

It's only Attenborough realistically who would come close. Maybe Paul Macarthy for his services to music. But beyond that I can't think of anyone else
