What’s the single most important factor that helps a car reach 300k+ miles?

Viking2151@reddit

Yeah I hope my 2011 Cruze makes it past 150k, atm I really don't think it will, I'll probably end up dragging it to the scrap yard with my 500k miles 92 Silverado.

New to PC gaming. Do i shut my PC off when im done or keep it on 24/7?

Viking2151@reddit

Don't have to turn it off, can leave it running if you want. The only downsides is that you heat up the room a bit, cost a little more in electric, and we'll have a power outage. You could enable sleep, but I often find it to be annoying as it just randomly wakes up or the PC won't wake up sometimes, just never works for me. If you're PC is doing nothing, shut it down, ssds are so fast it really doesn't matter. Sure the argument is power cycles is harder on the components, but them people that argue that is basing it off old hardware. It's really not anything you need to worry about. Now if it was winter and you start your PC when when it's below freezing, yeah you could damage components by creating condensation, my garage PC seems to go through monitors as this exact thing happens when I power my monitor on when it's below freezing.

I use to leave mine on all the time, until my sickly aunt had to move in and she's always cold so we got to suffer and sit in a 78f house while she's comfortable and don't pay any bills, so I shut mine off at night so it's easier to sleep, cooler.

Viking2151@reddit

Throw a list facebook marketplace asking for a backyard mechanic to take a look at it for probably less than half that cost, these cars are pretty simple so it wont need a rocket scientist to fix it, I see people do that around here all the time, and I even went to help throw a water pump on a car for someone that was already hurting for money before. You wont get much for if you scrap it. I didn't even get $500 at the scrap yard when I drove my 2006 cobalt to the scrap yard lol.

I mean I got a 5950x, 64gb of ram, 3090ti and it's still plenty at 3440x1440 with some games either balencer dlss or turn off ray tracing. I couldn't ask more from it and I do use that same system to host a jellyfin server, and occasionally a satisfactory server while I game at the same time. If I were to upgrade, I wouldn't get no lower than a 5080, but not buying one for $1300 or more.

Just hope he never has to deal with the dog shit 2 piece rotors they used on them trucks, I hated working on them, and the fuel tanks are nearly impossible to find for the 2004 to 20012 models and they all rot out the lock ring ears, I had to use a thick piece of plastic I cut and then used pretty much roofing screws to hold down the sending unit when I did a fuel pump on one, couldn't even get a used tak at the junk yard.... Lol

I learned on a 85 Silverado I bought, could take off from a stop on 3rd, and half the time the clutch could be pressed in half way or full in the pedal travel and throw it into gear and was fine with it, was hard to stall as well. Drove my buddies 2002 cougar and I pretty much had to relearn it again, it was so sensitive lol

When you get Thermalright air coolers for as cheap as they are, I don't see a point in AIO's in most standard builds, I got the Phantom Spirt on a 5950x and its been vary good. I had my fair share of AIO's and have been screwed by a few like Enermaxx and their shit TR4 coolers, replaced it 3 times and 2 of them were their "fixed" coolers and I had to take the loss, threw it in the garbage can.

Probably theft or bought aftermarket ones that didn't really work or they don't know what they are doing. I know in my county they don't do echecks and cat theft is kinda high, normally seems to happen to people that don't have much money to begin with, usually end up just throwing a pipe in place where it was and call it good.

Is there any pros in having 48 or 64gb of DDR5 for a gaming setup?

Depends on what you are doing with the system, I mean I got 64gb and with all the crap I got running and running a damanding game, I rarely get close to even half of that, unless I boot up Diablo 4, that game will consume more and more memory the longer it runs, game still has a memory leak.

Viking2151@reddit

I got called dumb here on reddit for having a project 92 c1500 Silverado with nearly 500,000 miles on it, got called dumb recently for daily driving a 94 suburban when their are more fuel efficient cars out there. am I really that dumb to choose not to spend a shit ton of money on something new when my old shit works and don't cost me money for a ton of repairs? I mean I got a 2011 Chevy Cruze, gets around 40mpg, great, awesome, but the car is POS, I spend more money in repairs for that thing than both my old ass truck combined. Something as simple as a coolant over flow costs like 80 bucks at the part store, a plastic fucking over flow tank, where I can buy a brake caliper, a soft line, pads and 2 foot of hard line and a break flair tool for under $100 for my Suburban. spent $120 on a caliper for the Cruze last summer, im dumb for sticking with old beater, hell replaced a starter on my suburban for 60 bucks in December, I don't want to buy one for the Cruze, its double that.

Do I have to have tire pressure sensors?

Posted by pleasedontthankyou@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 387 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Yes and no, when they had the tire issues it didn't normally show its ugly face unless you were being stupid, or in a situation where you had to swerve and body roll the thing, there were some instances where the tire physically came off the bead, wasn't enough pressure to keep the bead on it in that kind of situation or rolled the side wall, so the result was a safety recall by ford just to throw on a new sticker that required more air. 15 year Ford tech, believe it or not Ford had the same issue with the e150 vans in the early 2000s but at a much smaller scale, Ford again tried to blame the tire company.

The ones in my 2011 Cruze have been messed up for years now, just not worth breaking down the tires and replacing them, maybe when it needs new tires I'll do it but im old school, just check them with a gauge, so I probably wont replace them. lol.

Bought a pre-built, PCIe Slot 1 quit working, they want the whole PC shipped to them

Posted by NateDogTX@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 14 comments

Viking2151@reddit

I mean it's going to cost you $200 to ship and nearly a month of down time, you could buy the board and have everything up and running in a few days, if you don't care about the warranty or keep the old board and swap it back in if a you need to claim a warranty later. The board itself will have a warranty with MSI, you just have to swap all the parts out without damaging things, and you'd have to reactivate windows. If it was me I'd buy the board and swap it out, I've built so many computers, it's easy for me and it's cheaper option and way less downtime.

Yeah my uncle was shopping for used trucks and come a crossed this Dodge Rebal he was interested in, but one of the headlight lenses were cracked but still worked and the dealer didn't want to change it as it still worked for the time being, he even priced it out, was like $600 for a OEM head light, So he went to a different lot and bought something else.

Viking2151@reddit

I remember the AWD 2008 body style Chevy Equinox, the u-joints go bad, they expect you dump $600 for the entire drive shaft for a bad u-joint, non replacable, Just take out the drive shaft and its front wheel drive, its a weird setup that needs the speed and ABS sensors working for it to work correctly, good idea in practice but it was a crappy AWD system, by the time it kicks in the rear wheels, you'd already done spun the fronts and its like hope it might get you out lol.

How do you guys keep track of your car maintenance?

Posted by TheWeb1000@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 99 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Well oil changes I just go by if it's spring, change it, fall change it if it needs it or not. Most of the other fluids I just keep an eye on it. Unless it's a Chevy Cruze then it seems to need new fluids monthly so whatever. Though I did transmission line on it and I've had the car for almost 2 years, the transmission fluid is black, it still shifts fine and I'm about to dump the pos at the scrap yard anyway so it can stay black. Though my 94 suburban I've just recently changed its transmission fluid and filter as it was obviously looking a bit old, 200k miles not sure when it was done anyway, I did it's 6th rad flush in about 6 month, previous owner ran tap water so ya know, it's slowly cleaning up ever time, I don't keep a log of it just remember when I did it, but I also don't drive new cars.

Why avoid gskill ram, sure maybe they have some bad runs, but their warranty is vary good and a lifetime at that, I mean I had to warranty my DDR4 Neo kit about a year ago and I've had the kit since like 2018 or 19, not a question just told them how I tested it and the steps I took and about a week I got the replacement.

My girlfriend can not drive with automatic transmission, please help me convince her she can?!

Posted by LonsdaleHCNL@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 723 comments

Viking2151@reddit

I like manual personally in heavy duty trucks or sports cars, other than that I like automatic for the comfort, I can hold my drink while it shifts through the gears, don't have to ride the clutch in slow stop n go traffic, I don't have to 2 foot it in certain situations, when I was younger manual everything and I did love it, but now im older I just prefer in my a to b car to have an auto. Tell her its less work to drive an automatic, not always the case but automatic transmission will usually last the life of the car where a manual well you got to change out the clutch eventually at least once or twice in its life. Can tell her she can find a radio station she wants while its shifting on its own, idk. Manual cars here are usually cheaper as no one knows how to drive one and they normally don't get stolen lol

My truck is burning oil very fast. What could be the culprit?

Posted by hjjhjjnk@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 18 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Yeah something is not right, probably related to the AFM, my 94 Suburban got a slight rear main leak and a small oil cooler line leak and I need to add maybe a half a quart of oil in it every 2500 - 3000miles and I thought that was too much lol.

What’s it like going from a truck to a car?

Posted by idkanymore699@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 55 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Depends on the car really, I had a 94 Corsica that felt like it had way more room then my Cruze, same with my 2002 Caviler and my 96 Ford Taurus, My main issue with the Cruze is I wear boots all the time, and I often press the brake pedal by mistake when I want to press the gas, my boot is just almost to wide, size 12. And the seats just don't feel like it has the same room as my other cars had and no center arm rest unless you want to call that center thing a elbow rest. I wouldn't recommend a Cruze to anybody especially the first gen, they are cheap for a reason, unreliable, they can't keep their fluids in for nothing, I see them all the time and the Trax/sonic's at work for the same common stuff, and the parts are more expensive than what they should be, and its not because of space to be comfortable, its just the unreliable side of things. I would strongly recommend that you look at a different brand entirly, Toyota, Honda. I got a 495,000 miles 92 Silverado I'm restoring, I had the truck since 140,000, I had the engine out once to do a rear main at somewhere near 300,000 miles and oil pan gasket and a torque converter, I can tell you right now I've done less work and got less time and money in repairs then I have in that 2011 Cruze thats only got 120,000 miles on it lol.

Feels like a gocart.... I daily a 94 Suburban, its nothing fancy, stock height, slightly better than factory tires, I got a 2011 Cruze that I don't drive often only because its POS, 40+mpg but I hate the stupid thing, it always needs worked on, but I drive it from time to time, and its like going from something I can move around in, get comfortable to my boot hardly fits between the brake pedal and the center console to press the gas pedal and my ass fall asleep since I can't really move around at all. But its gets 40mpg, it is faster than my suburban, not as noisy I guess.

Would I make more money parting the car out myself or having it picked up?

Posted by HAILsexySATAN@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 24 comments

Viking2151@reddit

I know when I scrapped, I mostly bought Chevy Trucks and vans, Had a buyer that bought all GM v8's from us blown up or not, I'd stock up on some things like transmissions, cores and known good, Radiators, electric fans, window regulators, rear ends, Door windows, you name it. We usually kept all that stuff for a while with no buyers, we'd throw it into a scrap van or truck for weight, I'm not giving it aways for free when I can still make something off it. Or we used the spare parts to make one good truck and sell it. But typically yes, parting out you could make more money, but it will take time, not everyone is going to have a need for Focus parts ya know, You will not get $1,000 for scraping that thing complete, you may get closer to $500 assuming its still got the cat, if someone comes and picks it up, Lucky to get 400 out of it with how low it is right now, they got to make money too. But the potential to make more selling parts is there, its just time. Before covid we were pulling in almost 600 per truck without a transmission and engine, just weight alone, Now that same truck would bring in 300 on a good day lol, its sad.

If American cars are unreliable, why do domestic pick up trucks have such high resale value?

Posted by anyusernaem@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 706 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Every car manufacturer has that one or 2 cars that are vary reliable, unless it's a modern car which I don't care if Japanese, Chinese or European, they all suck when it comes to reliability now. But I'd still take my 90s Chevy trucks over most things, my 2011 cruze I hope one day it just catches on fire and call it a loss, I won't miss it.

It depends on the car or the seat thats in the car, not if its a sedan or a sport car, its also depends on you and what you like. I prefer the comfort of a bench seat in like the older trucks or cars, while others like how the newer cars seats hug them while driving, its mostly preference.

Why do some cars still struggle with overheating despite advanced coolant formulations and better radiators?

Posted by EvelynClede@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 37 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Shoot I remember my 95 Corsica that had the 3100, I hit a deer with it 50 miles away from home when I was up in North Dakota, that car for about 20 miles at a time lived at the red line on the temp gauge, would end up stalling and I'd leave it sit for 30 minutes or so and start her back up and go again, I made it, had to stop about 4 - 5 times to let it cool. I bent it all back out and threw another rad in it and drove around for a few years after that. Then you get my 2011 Cruze, it got hot once due to the belt breaking, and it cooks a head gasket, or well I believe that's the case, I fixed the belt and still drove it around for almost a year before I figured out where the coolant was going, never overheated during that.

How hard is it to replace oil pan gasket WITHOUT pulling engine?

Posted by Legitimate_Frame5951@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 37 comments

Viking2151@reddit

You will have to unbolt the engine mounts at the least, I've done it on a few different f150s, Be best to use an engine hoist, or a come-along, I've used rachet straps before, probably not recommended lol. I've done floor jacks on the balancer, can make it work with out pulling the engine, may have to unbolt the transmission mount as well. But again your dad can be right, their isn't much that needs to be unplugged, unbolted to pull the engine out of one of them, and it may be easier to get at some of the hard to get at bolts once its out. Either way is doable or has their own pros and cons.

Is liquid cooling actually worth it for most gamers?

Posted by KRGKart_Support@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 387 comments

Viking2151@reddit

Honestly, if you do not plan on overclocking or tweaking, no not really, I feel the trade off for performance vs reliability isn't worth it, I got a thermal right phantom sport I paid like $45 bucks for and it's plenty for my 5950x with voltage tweaking and a +200mhz allowed by pbo. Idk if I'd ever go back to an aio unless you just want the looks and has a somewhat decent warranty. Real water cooling I'd even say is more reliable than some of these aio's anymore but expensive, and more prone to leaks if you have a lot of fittings. Noise I guess would better than air, but idk, fan noise never really bothered me unless it was one of the blower style cards that sound like you next to a jet engine lol.

Do you bleed brake line when pushing caliper in?

Posted by ApprehensiveStock928@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 56 comments

Viking2151@reddit

I don't, the only time I bleed brakes if I have to fix something like a brake line or replacing a caliper or master cylinder. I do how ever crack the lid of the master cylinder to allow fluid to escape when I press the caliper back, I live in the rust belt, so I never touch the bleeders unless I have to. I recently blew a line on my 94 suburban and my driver's side caliper wasn't great anyway but I was going to try to get the bleeder loose, wasn't even there anymore, rotted off. Lucky the caliper was like $40 with the core, wasn't worth trying to extract it anyway. Rust belt sucks lol.
