What was the last car you owned that had a carburetor?
Posted by too-left-feet@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 407 comments
For me it was a 1994 Plymouth minivan. The last one I rebuilt was out of a 1974 MG, and that was 20 years ago. I’ve been wondering if new mechanics even get trained on carburetor trouble shooting anymore.

1985 Honda Accord in 1998. The transmission crapped out at about 125,000 miles.

1973 Roadrunner, but I have LS swapped things with carbs but I don't think that counts
The_Motley_Fool----@reddit
My ‘78 CJ5 has a Weber downdraft carburetor. Does that count?
mostlygray@reddit
1999 it was a GMC 1 ton with a 4 barrel Rochester. Truck was a '79 to my memory. It was a 350 4 bolt main. It had tons of power. It was a beast chassis-cab with a stake bed. It weighed 7,200lbs dry. 18,000lb GVRW. It could do 23,000 but ND has some weight registration that changes the class.
Never had to monkey with that toilet bowl of a carb. When those secondaries opened up, you were going 90 like it was nothing. It was as quick as a sports car.350hp, 450lbs/ft of torque. Even being heavy, it was quick. I never had to use the throttle to take off. I'd just idle it out, then use the gas. It had a stump puller fist so you always started in second.
I miss that truck. It was a monster that took up 2 parking spots. I drove it in college for a bit and I got a parking ticket every time I parked. I ignored them because I didn't own it, and a boot wouldn't fit on the wheels.
As to repairing carbs, I have no idea if mechanics can still do it. I can. I rebuilt the carb for my snowblower last year. Had to take it completely apart, soak it in solvent, clean the jets, polish the needle valve, float was fine, replace a gasket, and get it breathing again. It worked and is still working. I rebuilt a carb for a 9N Ford tractor a few years ago. That worked. Rebuilt the carb for a Tecumseh generator.
Carbs are pretty easy. I'd rather do that than troubleshoot a multi-point/port fuel injection system.

Other than my 64 Chevelle, nothing. Even my 87 s-10 that was my first car had a simple throttle body injection system. That was a great truck, super easy to work on.

76 Celica in 87. 69 Dart(Holley 4 bbl) in 96. 76 Celica(Weber 45 DCOE) in 2005. 74 Corolla in 2012. Wish I still had the Celica. Got 6 Mikuni motorcycle carbs I keep dreaming of slapping on the Cressida. There are still a few of us carb weirdos around 🤣🤣🤣
UnderTheFrozenSky@reddit
Never had one but want one eventually.
bobqzzi@reddit
They really aren't great
Patient-Tech@reddit
For a daily driver commuting vehicle, no.
For a weekend cruise, they’re awesome.
smthngeneric@reddit
You had the wrong ones then. Is efi technically better? Yes. But nothing beats the throttle response and sound of the secondaries opening on a carb. Plus all the induction noise you could ever want.
bobqzzi@reddit
Carbs has way worse throttle response than EFI. You can get IR carbs to be pretty good, and even 4 barrels can work pretty good, but they can't match efi.
UnderTheFrozenSky@reddit
I've had carb bikes and they're a ton of fun.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Also never had one. Currently have 1 CIS (Mondial QV). My only 1970s car had efi (914). Kinda don't really want to ever own a carb car.
UnderTheFrozenSky@reddit
I just like weird/old cars and it sounds like a fun thing to learn as I like mechanics in general. Totally understand why we moved to EFI though!
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
Carbs suck both literally and figuratively. Any OBD2 efi is better than any carb.

HungryHungryMarmot@reddit
Oh! I forgot all about the hood scoop flappers!
Mine had a quadrajet with electric choke. I didn’t know they had an electronic one. However I know the Z28 had the command control computer. Maybe that worked with an electronic Q-Jet?
In any case, my Z28 had a motor swap at some point in its lifetime, and I’m sure that got yanked at the same time.

33 year old Ford master technician here, been in the business since 2013, when I started at a small tire shop. I've been through all kinds of classes and training sessions, in multiple states, and only have 2 left before I reach the top level of certification under the Ford umbrella.
I have received zero carburetor training. There's not even a mention of a carburetor in any of the teaching. OBD1 is also not taught. The only reason I have learned about it is because I worked side by side with a 35+ year experienced mentor, and have always owned either an OBD1 or carbureted truck.
Currently have an '86 Bronco with a carb'ed 351W in it. I've also had a carb'ed '81 F100, 2 OBD1 F150s, and a few boats with carbureted outboards. They aren't rocket science, just different science. I'm one of the few techs in my age range (that I've run into) that has any experience with carbs at all, which is wild to me

My daily driver is a 2005 GMC Yukon that I purchased seven years ago as of this July 1 for $600. It currently has 191,000 miles on it and I purchased it with 120,000 miles. I also own a 1940 Packard model 110. There may be a photo of it on my profile somewhere. That’s got a single barrel carburetor on a straight six engine with an oil bath air filter. The weekend I got at home I went to town on doing all the tuneup things and I spent probably 45 minutes cleaning all the oil off the engine air filter before I realized that it was supposed to be bathed in oil. 😛
Hersbird@reddit
What 1994 Plymouth minivan had a carb still? I had a 1988 Plymouth minivan that was fuel injected. Then a 90 later with a different engine that had feul injection as well. One was the 3.0 v6 the other the 3.3 v6
Repulsive_Vanilla383@reddit
Yeah doesn't seem right, 1994 is deep into OBD1 and only 2 years away from OBD2. I'd be surprised if any vehicle was sold 94 year with a carb.
bornecrosseyed@reddit
94 was the start of obd2, if you were the lucky owner of a Toyota Camry at least.
Different_Split_9982@reddit
My ex wife's 95 Camry would like a chat with you. It gave fault codes that the dealer and master tech said no charge please leave.
bornecrosseyed@reddit
Was this in the 90s, or more recently?
Different_Split_9982@reddit
She bought it with 30,000 miles it was 3-4 years old at the time. When it hit 120-130,000 miles let me see the distributer went the fuel pump went two sets of axles my favorite was when the oil pump failed. The car religiously had oil changes at 4000 miles on full synthetic oil. It was probably 2000.
5141121@reddit
I don't know that I'd count anyone in those first few years of OBD-II lucky.
I worked at a dealership from 95-97 and while it improved over that time, it was a shit show.
bornecrosseyed@reddit
Is this just because shops didn’t know what to do with the codes? Or they didn’t have the reader to pull them? Seems like a simple, easy to use system to me.
5141121@reddit
It was a lot of different things. New information was a big one. OBD-II brought a lot more depth to the detail techs could get. But there were also some quirky bits with emissions and things. Like the evap system would throw a CEL if the gas cap wasn't tight enough, but nobody had readers, so it was an expensive dealer stop just to look.
It settled down a lot after the early 2000s as the systems got smarter. But it took some time for sure.
Repulsive_Vanilla383@reddit
I can imagine it was growing pains for everybody at around that year range. I bet at that time most of the techs still thought fuel injection was the work of the devil.

Depends on the market - Isuzu's pickup was the last passenger car/truck sold in the US with a carb, Ladas hung on in Canada for a couple more years, and I believe some of the cheapest European hatches had carbs almost into the millennium.

It had a lot of old features. 4-speed standard shift, RWD, carburated, belt driven fan. No electronics of any kind. It had no power steering. Can't quite remember about brakes, but I think it had a vacuum boost.
Previous owner had cut out the catalytic converter and replaced it with a resonator. That little 4-cyl 1.6L had a lot of pep when it was tuned just right.

The only carbureted on-road vehicle I've owned was an 85 Ranger 2.8 V6, never had to mess with it either. As for rebuilt, I've done tons of ATVs and small engine carbs. I can tell you that current techs are not taught about induction systems older than they are. I know our local Ford dealer won't even work on '07 and older Powerstroke's, as they don't have techs that are certified or understand them, and Ford doesn't offer the classes anymore. When I worked there in high school(mid 2000's) they had a couple older guys that would work on the handful of older 80's stuff that came in and needed worked on but I think today they would just turn it away to an independent.

I have a current car, a '72 olds cutlass,, with a holley carb. I went to school for auto tech back in '08 and we didn't do anything with carbs. Though, if you have an oxygen sensor and air/fuel gauge they arent that tough to work with imo.
