Can I use £5 Scottish Pound in the South?

Posted by Curious-Campaign1298@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 679 comments

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

Even £50 notes aren't normalised, so many shops just blanket refuse them, and why don't cash machines ever give them out. When I worked in retail the tourists would be the only people who have £50 notes, where do British residents get them from

Can I use £5 Scottish Pound in the South?

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

I used to work in retail in Oxford and we'd get Scottish notes everyday, and I'd accept £5 and £10 no problem (but if you're in a less touristy area the staff might not be as familiar with them) For the Scottish 20s there were a lot of fakes going around at the time (when it was paper) and we'd have to get a manager to check

I know this has been downvoted, but seriously Hull is a great place to visit. The historic Old Town is beautiful. The city centre has quite a few museums and there's William Wilberforce's house. I went to uni in Hull and loved it. Of course it has its bad parts, but every city does. What annoys me is how quick people are to look down on Hull.

People that get the bus do you get up before the bus stops when you want to get off?

Posted by Itsalladeepend@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 77 comments

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

Someone died in Oxford after falling down the stairs of a bus. I noticed the announcements saying to stay seated until the bus stops started shortly after this. https://metro.co.uk/2024/11/08/man-30s-dies-falling-stairs-double-decker-bus-21954538/ Personally I'll only now get up if I'm at the back of the top deck (because there's no way the driver would wait) but I always now wait until the bus stops before using the stairs.

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

Just buy supermarket own brands. I've never seen an own brand lemonade contain aspartame. And it's much cheaper than 7up. Own brand cola usually doesn't taste great though, except M&S sugar free cola and also doesn't contain aspartame, and still cheaper than Pepsi max.

How much do we need credit cards?

Posted by Comprehensive-Fuel70@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 467 comments

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

Only get a credit card if you completely understand that you need to pay it in full every month. When you buy something over £100 you get section 75 protection, so you are covered if something goes wrong. Even if you just pay 1p of the item on your credit card you'd be protected. Some credit cards also offer rewards for your spending. But you must always pay in full every month - you can set up a direct debit so you don't forget. Don't ever think that you can get away with not paying the whole balance every month.

I also don't have my GCSE certificates (my school never gave them to me and ignored me when I asked for them a couple of years later) When I did an apprenticeship and I said I didn't have certificates, they were able to do a learner record check and found that I had GCSEs, so I didn't need the certificates

Is shoplifting really as endemic as the media suggests?

Posted by craigus17@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 344 comments

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

Depends what area you're living in. I witness shoplifting a few times a month, and when I was working in retail in a busy city centre I saw it pretty much every day. People don't even care if anyone sees them, they just do it in plain sight. Its also really random things, like I saw one guy filling his rucksack with cheese then he dropped it all on the floor and was desperately picking them up. Seen someone else just take tomato ketchup

Wilko It closed down just before I moved to a place a few minutes walk away from it. Would've been so good to just have one place to buy non-food essentials and DIY/home stuff instead of having to go round lots of different shops that aren't as good quality or as cheap as Wilko

What Non evil companies are we using?

Posted by seekingoutpeace@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 752 comments

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit

I hate them - they pay pennies for people's books and then they undercut all the normal sellers on ebay, basically making it impossible to sell the books yourself on ebay, because they get postage discounts that regular sellers don't get. They together with other large companies have destroyed the second hand market for books. Wouldn't it be better if we could all buy and sell second hand books off each other, rather than a large company like World of Books being involved?
