Do you freeze bread?

My partner and I just came back from a weekend visiting my parents and we found a very mouldy loaf of bread on the kitchen counter on our return. I ask her why she didn't put it in the freezer so it wouldn't go mouldy and she said "my family has never put bread in the freezer".
This blew my mind as I always freeze bread as I don't eat it often and freeze it do it lasts way longer.
Is this a common practice to freeze your bread so it lasts longer, or do you folks not bother and just eat it as you go?
BreadfruitOk5332@reddit
Yeah always but I live alone so if I didn’t I’d be wasting tons. Just take out 2 slices every morning I need a sandwich
mailywhale@reddit
How long does it take to defrost and how’s the texture? Are you usually something similar to warburtons toastie? I’ve never done it but would be open to
IHateTheLetter-C-@reddit
Don't need to defrost it if you're taking it to work, just make your sarnie with the bread still frozen and it'll defrost by the time you go to eat it
phatboi23@reddit
keeps it cool too :)
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
Does it not end up soggy then tho? Being a wrapped frozen sandwich...
IHateTheLetter-C-@reddit
No, but wrap in some paper towel if you're worried. I'm sensitive to sog and never had an issue
Adventurous-Dog-3786@reddit
No. I thought it would but it was fine.
KingkLou@reddit
This hack changed my life when I learnt it a few years ago! I can see from the comments some people are only just learning it today!
imtravelingalone@reddit
I've done with lots of types of breads, and crumpets, and muffins, and they all thaw to the exact texture they were before. Pretty impressive, I'd assume nicer breads with less preservatives would get soggy.
keto_crossword@reddit
Homemade sourdough also defrosts perfectly!
Lindoriel@reddit
Yeah, I've got a good stash of hot cross buns in my chest freezer. Always need to stock up in spring and they keep well. Just take one out at a time.
RoboTon78@reddit
Don't need to thaw it if you're making toast.
mailywhale@reddit
Yeah. That’s why I was interested in the comment about using it for a simple sarnie
ILive4Banans@reddit
Microwave defrost setting for 1.5mins, tastes same as normal lol
Giddyup_1998@reddit
I'd go 20 secs on 70%.
ILive4Banans@reddit
Depends on your microwave ig
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
Microwave defrost functions always go by the weight of the frozen item, not time
ILive4Banans@reddit
Mine doesn’t hence why I listed a time lol
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
What microwave you got?
Not_Wrong_Tho@reddit
but they said sandwich...
ColbysRevenge@reddit
I make sandwiches with toast all the time
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
But they're replying to a comment about making sandwiches...
BreadfruitOk5332@reddit
Only takes an hour or so to defrost. I have Hovis multiseed.
It’s a little soggier than normal and I’d rather not freeze it. It’s just smarter to.
Dimac99@reddit
Two slices separated will defrost in under 10 minutes in my cold kitchen. If you're taking a loaf out and defrosting it whole in the bag then I can understand it taking longer and being soggy as some ice crystals will have accumulated, but as long as the loaf isn't squashed in the freezer, the slices should separate easily for use as and when required.
BreadfruitOk5332@reddit
Who gives a fuck
Giddyup_1998@reddit
An hour? Do you live in the depths of the Arctic?
BreadfruitOk5332@reddit
I’ve never cared enough to set a stopwatch.
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
Then why state a time if you clearly have no clue?!
mailywhale@reddit
Thanks
Grotbagsthewonderful@reddit
My mum used to freeze bread when I was in school. I'd make a ham and cheese sandwich with it in the morning, (don't bother attempting to cut it in half) wrap it in tinfoil and by lunch time it's basically it's just like a fresh sandwich.
Front-Heat8726@reddit
For sliced toastie breads, I just toss the slices in the toaster and click the Frozen setting. Perfectly toasted by the time I got my coffee sorted.
Primary-Angle4008@reddit
Doesn’t take long, 20-30 min to defreeze and the texture is pretty good, just the crust isn’t crusty anymore if it was initially. I freeze a lot of bread and don’t usually toast it as I prefer sandwiches
Adventurous-Dog-3786@reddit
You don’t actually need to defrost it if , for example , it’s for work later. Just make it frozen and by lunchtime it’s fine ! An ex colleague showed me this one day whilst we were working away and he was doing his sandwich for work ! Strange but it worked so I started to do it !
Giddyup_1998@reddit
About 5 mins and the texture is the same. As long as you freeze from fresh.
Occamsfacecloth@reddit
Go for it, everyone needs to live a little
DogtasticLife@reddit
This is the way
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
I buy fresh bread every few days from a bakers. Avoid factory mass produced bagged stuff. Never need to freeze.
Outrageous_Shake2926@reddit
I freeze bread. I do 12 hour shift with about 50 minute commute each way. I have sandwiches for lunch. I make a batch of sandwiches and freeze them.
Diddleymaz@reddit
I have always frozen bread. At the moment I have some Naan, focaccia, wraps. And pitta and a sliced loaf! If I see something that we will use reduced I frequently buy it so I have it in the freezer ready for the correct meal
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I freeze crumpets, naan breads and pitas as well for the same reason.
BlackberryNice1270@reddit
My family never did growing up, but now my husband and I do. It's much easier to buy three loaves in the weekly shop and freeze them to defrost during the week. Only for normal sliced bread though, I wouldn't freeze stotties or paninis.
Prior-Fall-7753@reddit
You get throught three loaves a week?? Is this for 2 people
BlackberryNice1270@reddit
Noooo family of 5. Packed lunches for 2 every day too.
Prior-Fall-7753@reddit
Ohh I was gonna say 😂 that's like 9 slices of bread every day
i_am_simple_bob@reddit
I always freeze half of the loaf. Once I'm done with the first half, I take out the frozen half and let it defrost. Letting it defrost on its own is a lot better than microwaving it, and it doesn't take long. If I forget to take it out it's easy to pull off a couple of slices and defrost just that.
Doomergeneration@reddit
Yeah all the time, normally have quarter to half a loaf left by the use by date so bang it in the freezer. I generally only use freezer bread for toast though, not the same defrosted for a sandwich
i_am_simple_bob@reddit
Depends how you defrost it. It's very easy to overdo it in the microwave. Bread defrosts very quickly even if you just leave it out and don't use a microwave at all.
intolauren@reddit
Yeah, freezer bread is strictly toast material.
w0lllf@reddit
I don't eat bread as a staple, so when I get it as free leftovers after handing out at the food bank I put it in the freezer.
FakeNordicAlien@reddit
I slice and freeze the bread I make on the day I make it, and then defrost it for toast. It tastes better than any other bread I’ve tried the first day, or when it’s sliced and frozen, but the downside is that it’s stale by the second day if I don’t.
On the rare occasions that I buy bread, I rarely freeze it, even if I don’t eat the whole loaf before it goes off. My freezer is small and almost always packed full of meat, vegetables, ice cream, ice, soup, and a few pre-made things I buy like lasagna and hash browns, so there’s never enough space, and bread is a high-volume low-cost food. If I had a bigger freezer I probably would, but for the amount of space it takes up vs what a loaf costs, the freezer space is worth more to me than the bread is. And I live alone. I don’t know how families manage. Maybe they don’t batch cook. Or maybe they have chest freezers in the garage.
CoolRanchBaby@reddit
Half our freezer is full of special pet food 😂 so freezer space is precious in our home. In the past I would freeze bread sometimes if it wasn’t going to be used fast, but it takes up a lot of space.
Now I prefer to use the space for things on hand to make dinners like frozen veg, chicken etc. Also usually a couple easy fast meal things to stop us going “ugh I’m too tired to cook, let’s get a takeaway”.
I also keep bulk frozen blueberries for breakfast and smoothies and they work out less and don’t go bad like fresh.
Finally I keep a couple treats so we don’t make spontaneous store runs to buy stuff like that (where we always buy more than we’d went for lol).
That stuff all saves me more money than freezing bread.
If we do have bread that looks like we might not finish it I do throw it in the fridge if there is room there.
But if it some of it gets mouldy I don’t feel bad. I throw it out. In the long run I save more dedicating freezer space to the things above!
PsychologicalDrone@reddit
Yep, you can put it in the toaster straight from the freezer. Or you can make your sandwich with frozen bread in the morning and it will help keep it cool until lunchtime
Sea_Cue@reddit
Froze it when I lived alone cos I wouldn’t get through a loaf on time so yep totally normal.
Wonder_Shrimp@reddit
I don't as I usually use it fast enough, and I don't have time or memory capacity to thaw bread for my sandwiches.
Also, freezing bread dries it out
ishallbecomeabat@reddit
Ruins the taste, I never do it
EpochRaine@reddit
Yes, but I only defrost one loaf at a time. So there is always one loaf out.
I don't have bread waste as any leftovers become bread pudding :)
impossiblejane@reddit
I buy loaves of bread when they are reduced so I do freeze them. The bread I'm actively using stays in the fridge in the warmer months to reduce mould.
Positive-Mud-11@reddit
Never froze bread in my life, did not know it was a thing
Unique-Heart825@reddit
I always freeze bread. No issues defrosting it. Tastes fine and takes 10 mins or less to defrost at room temp if you take out a couple slices.
Expensive_Peace8153@reddit
Free penicillin!
freddiethecalathea@reddit
Why didn’t you put the bread in the freezer?
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I thought she was going to eat it before we left
blackcurrantcat@reddit
Why was it her responsibility to freeze the bread before you left? It seems like it’s customary for you to freeze bread, why didn’t you put it in the freezer?
To answer your actual question, no I don’t freeze bread just because there’s never enough room in the freezer to fit the bread but I could see that being a reasonable way to store bread if I ate it very slowly. I got a nice mouthful of mould this weekend at my mum’s because she can’t use bread up before this happens. (She hasn’t got and doesn’t want a freezer).
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
It wasn't my bread - I have my own bread which I freeze and she has her own which she normally leaves at room temperature as she eats bread way more than me, and I didn't know she still had quite a bit of the loaf left.
Had I known, I would have put it in the freezer for her
bobsnervous@reddit
People on reddit really try make something crazy out of such tiny irrelevant situations. These people tryna make out that youre a shitty partner for this. "Why is it 'her' responsibility blah blah" like chill were talking about bread here. Also im a bread freezer too I dont know how people either dont know or care to do it.
blackcurrantcat@reddit
I was merely asking a question to get further information? I wasn’t making anything out of anything and made no comment on their relationship at all. I notice that you put her in inverted commas (which I didn’t, by the way) so is it you who’s making something out of my comment that isn’t actually there, I wonder?
bobsnervous@reddit
I wasnt talking about you specifically I was making a generalised observation and used that qoute to make an example.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I don't know why I got so heavily downvoted for assuming she'd already eaten all of her bread and not putting it in the freezer myself.
I would have done it had I known there was still a lot of it left!
bobsnervous@reddit
I absolutely believe you would've too bro. Dont know if its your first time asking for relationship advice on here but you learn fast that people are goddamn fucking looney's. Its funny seeing the responses though so theres an up side!
keeponkeepingup@reddit
If her answer was her family doesn't freeze bread, like as if shes never heard of the concept, why hadn't she ever noticed that you freeze your bread if you live together? Genuinely curious lol
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I tend to only eat bread in the morning for toast when she's still asleep so she doesn't normally see me defrosting my bread
keeponkeepingup@reddit
But she's never seen it in the freezer?
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
Evidently not as she doesn't use the freezer often
freddiethecalathea@reddit
An entire loaf?
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
It wasn't an entire loaf, it was about half a loaf
Henry-Black@reddit
You’ve never been really, really, really, really hungry?
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
Not his bread
shsusiisnsl@reddit
Found the partner
auntie_eggma@reddit
It's a fair question.
Not_Wrong_Tho@reddit
Also we've established the partner doesn't put bread in the freezer, so wouldn't reasonably expect OP to either. So the 'comeback' here doesn't even really make sense.
auntie_eggma@reddit
Yeah it's just someone being needlessly confrontational in an attempt to be Reddit clever.
Gold_Information9677@reddit
I was just about to say this!
Interesting_Fish309@reddit
Yes it's common if u go away or won't use it all. Old people used do it but now u can get little half a loaf bags
Secure_Music_6062@reddit
I never have personally on the basis that you can only use defrosted bread for toast unless you want soggy bread sandwiches. It's not worth the freezer space
SterlingVoid@reddit
I've never had soggy bread from freezing it, works fine for both
Secure_Music_6062@reddit
It's nothing like the same as if bought off the shelf though?
SterlingVoid@reddit
Unless you are buying high quality fresh bread from a bakery it's no different
Dimac99@reddit
It's only soggy if you defrost it in the bag. If you see any visible ice crystals knock them off and then leave the slices in the open for 5 to 10 minutes.
Adventurous-Dog-3786@reddit
Apparently, it’s actually supposed to be better for people on low carb and diabetic diets. It does something to the starch structure, especially when toasted from frozen.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I did not know that, interesting.
Adventurous-Dog-3786@reddit
I didn’t until recently.
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
I think most people freeze bread. Your partner and her family are weird/wasteful/both
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
To be fair to her family they don't have a lot of freezer space and they all eat lots of bread so probably have no need to freeze it like me.
ultraboomkin@reddit
Frozen bread tastes rank, sorry. At best it is serviceable for toast but still worse than using fresh bread.
it does feel like a bit of a waste when I buy a loaf of bread and only use 2 slices before having to throw it away. But it tastes worse frozen and buying a new loaf is only £2 so not a big deal.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I mainly use frozen bread for toast so I don't notice any difference
IcyPuffin@reddit
I dont as a rule - i dont like the texture change of defrosted bread.
If i was going away for a few days and still had the best part of a loaf left then i might freeze it - frozen bread is fine for toast, so id just use it like that.
But ordinarily bread stays on the counter. I dont even put it in the fridge as even that changes the texture a bit.
Historical_Project86@reddit
Yes I do.
Plot_3@reddit
I make my own bread, so make two loaves and slice them and freeze them. Easy to then toast form frozen. If you only eat bread intermittently, then it’s the only way unless you’re happy eating stale bread.
Missbhavin67@reddit
I regularly freeze bread. I usually have at least one loaf in the freezer. I can't get to the shops easily so it's simpler to get my shopping delivered and freeze the bread as needed. You can freeze individual slices to make it easier
Justboy__@reddit
Yea I freeze it because I buy fresh so there’s no preservatives. I butter it frozen (which helps in winter when the butter is Rock hard) and make the sandwich frozen. Stick it in the fridge and it’s perfectly defrosted by the time I come to eat it the next day.
I saw my MIL do it once and was amazed at how well it works. Never known anyone else to do it though.
Pyjama365@reddit
I have tried it, but I didn't like the texture, so stopped. Seems like a fairly normal thing to do in 1-2 person homes though.
Fattydog@reddit
We bake all our own bread, then slice it and freeze it.
It goes into the toaster from frozen, or we defrost it on the side/in the microwave as necessary.
Front-Heat8726@reddit
Bread, English muffins, tortilla wraps, pastries, muffins, cookies, donuts... I always have a good selection in my chest freezer from yellow sticker shops and from what I couldn't redistribute as an Olio food waste volunteer
SoggyWotsits@reddit
Yep, I freeze bread that I won’t be able to use quickly enough. I also call the kitchen worktop a worktop, not a counter. Because I’m not American!
Scarygirlieuk1@reddit
All the time and we just take out what we want when we want it.
EmbroidedBumblebee@reddit
My family do, I personally don't as I don't like how defrosted bread tastes, the texture also changes and I'm not keen on that either. I tend to buy bread and eat it in less than 3 days, it tastes better the fresher it is.
jajay119@reddit
Yes, but only for toast.
SeasonReasonable4282@reddit
Back in the 70s, my mum would always fill the freezer with bread, as freezers work better when they are full.
NutAli@reddit
I used to just put it in the bread bin or on top of it until visiting my son & family a few times & seeing that they refrigerate theirs.
After a while I decided to try this & realised it lasts longer, which is great for me as I live on my own so I don't use a hell of a lot of bread.
We have frozen it in the past when we were a family together & it was fine.
Lowermains@reddit
I freeze all bready products otherwise I’d be as well as emptying my purse down the drain.
Fyonella@reddit
Yes. Personally I don’t eat bread but I make all the bread my household eats. I batch bake loaves and trays of rolls etc. Slice the loaves and freeze, freeze the rolls too.
Why wouldn’t you?
Xenozip3371Alpha@reddit
Yeah, I buy like 3 or 4 loaves at once, leaving one out while the others get frozen.
I also put them in freezer bags so even when taken out of the freezer they last a lot longer than usual before getting either stale or mouldy.
ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit
You've just reminded me, I'm away from home for a week and I've just realised I forgot to put the bread in the freezer before I left.
stueynz@reddit
Why about keeping bread in the fridge? No need to defrost… And keeps longer
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
No space and it actually goes stale quicker in the fridge.
Lewis19962010@reddit
I do have some in the freezer but usually end up buying new bread as I have no forward thinking of I want a sandwich to get it out in time to defrost naturally. As the texture of quick defrosted bread in toaster/microwave is horrible
Asher-D@reddit
Growing up bread always went in the freezer unless it was eaten within 12 hours of it being purchased.
Now as an adult, I freeze it only if it isn't eaten within 2-3 days.
K1mTy3@reddit
Between the 4 of us we usually get through 2 loaves a week - so yes, we freeze one of them on Saturday and defrost it again when the first loaf is almost gone.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
I'd freeze it as I live alone. It's also supposed to be more digestible that way.
Frothingdogscock@reddit
Yes, as a diabetic I defrost 2 slices in the toaster every morning for breakfast. Due to the "resistant starch" it converts, it only has half the GI 👍
mewkitty91@reddit
I put mine in the fridge, lasts soo much longer
elmo_touches_me@reddit
It's a normal thing to do, but I had also never heard of or considered the idea until I was an adult and living at uni.
My family never put bread in the freezer, so it was just something I never thought to do.
Darkgreenbirdofprey@reddit
I love how OPs explanatiom for why he didn't freeze his own bread was that this particular loaf was 'her loaf'.
Op, Do you not share food in your home? The plot thickens!
Qyro@reddit
I have never put bread in the freezer, if only because I absolutely abhor soggy bread, which it inevitably becomes after it defrosts.
But I've had to move back in with my parents only to discover since I moved out 15+ years ago that they've started freezing their bread. No more homemade sandwiches for me.
Latter-Corner8977@reddit
If there’s space in the freezer, yeah
Correct-Ad-6605@reddit
No. Mostly because it makes it taste like shit.
vague-eros@reddit
It really doesn't, if you're just toasting it in the end anyway.
Correct-Ad-6605@reddit
You cant possibly know what my tastes buds fee like. It DOES taste like shit to me.
Correct-Ad-6605@reddit
And you know this becaue you can sense my taste buds how?
NeedleworkerThick729@reddit
Yes. I bake all my own bread, so it doesn’t have loads of preservatives and I freeze bread all the time.
space_coyote_86@reddit
I want to but there's never room.
Ok_Bumblebee_9873@reddit
Yes but it wasn't something my family did growing up. I learned it form a housemate. Blew my mind at the time haha.
m1_ab@reddit
I do, but only because I live with flatmates and only buy food for myself ad don't get through a whole loaf before it gets mouldy.
When I'm living at home with my family (4 adults), we never freeze bread, because we get through it before it goes off - we probably eat at least two full loaves a week between us.
cantankerous-salmon@reddit
Never lol. My mum does because she barely ever eats bread so she would end up wasting loads if she didn't freeze the leftovers, but I eat two slices of toast for breakfast every day and my bf usually has some too so we go through bread too quickly for it to make sense. We keep it in the fridge so mould is not really an issue.
Vayne7777@reddit
Yes, I don't like waste. Toaster has defrost settings and it works perfectly. The benefit is also that you can buy yellow price bread as you'll freeze it straight after you bought it so no food waste 😄
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
I do that all the time
CharieRarie@reddit

StuckWithThisOne@reddit
I’m guessing he didn’t realise there was any left because it was her bread. Just what I’m interpreting from this. My partner also doesn’t put the bread in the freezer cos he never buys or eats the loaves lol, only I realise we still have bread left.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
Yes that's right, I thought she'd already eaten it and it was only when we came back and I was clearing space on the counter I found it
hughesyg@reddit
Is it secret bread that she keeps in a secret place?
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
It was buried under stuff on the counter, lol. We have a small kitchen with limited storage space
hughesyg@reddit
Well anywho… I don’t freeze bread. I should. But freezer is always full and my husband wouldn’t eat it 🙄
As soon as he buys a fresh loaf the old loaf is dead to him even if it’s fine 🙈

I have to freeze my bread get 8 loaves on prescription and it only has a short shelf life. It says on bread suitable for freezing. If I had to buy my bread they are oh so very very expensive in the uk there £3.00 per loaf 16 small slices of bread. Thats like $6-$7 US i have 8 at a time cost of £0.00 as they are prescribed for my coeliac and have to be gluten free
imtravelingalone@reddit
I definitely put bread in the freezer when I'm going to be away. Thaws out perfectly every time.
Giddyup_1998@reddit
Freeze from freshly bought.
Relevant_Cancel_144@reddit
Frozen bread is actually better for you as the freezing process creates resistant starch, meaning the bread causes less of a blood sugar spike.
Capable_Tip7815@reddit
I have always frozen bread. It's quite handy when you think there's fuck all to eat but a rummage in the freezer usually yields summat.
No-Door-3181@reddit
Yeah I always freeze yellow sticker bread
Petcai@reddit
I freeze baps, so I can take out 2 for a couple burgers whenever, a loaf I don't usually because I eat it in time.
Frozen bread dries out a bit if it's open and frozen for a while so it's not as good as fresh, but it's better than having no bread because it went mouldy.
Namerakable@reddit
I've tried, but it makes it taste weird to me.
Tao626@reddit
For the cost of a loaf, I would rather not have a large space in my freezer taken up by a massive brick of bread. I would rather reserve that space for things that will actually spoil within the day if not frozen than the thing that at worst, I may lose like 4 slices of ~20.
I also don't want to choose between either damp sandwiches from defrosting or having everything toasted.
A sandwich is also something I just decide to have on the spot. I'm not taking bread out hours beforehand like I'm making a Sunday roast.
WoodenEggplant4624@reddit
I always have bread in the freezer. Usually at least two kinds of flatbread and some loaves, also sliced bread for toast. Crumpets, muffins and tortilla are extra
DrivenUser7277@reddit
Yes, 100%. Generally food is so expensive you've got to be savvy, not just with bread but anything perishable. Mind you, freezing half a loaf of bread isnt savvy it's just engaging with food
anabsentfriend@reddit
My (sliced) bread goes in the freezer as soon as I bring it back from the supermarket. I take slices out as I need them.
themcsame@reddit
Yup.
If it's likely not to be used for a while, it goes in the freezer.
Worst case scenario, you forget to take it out... Either thaw it out in the toaster for sandwiches... Or you know, if you're making toast just stick it on longer (or use the defrost button)
Etheria_system@reddit
Why didn’t YOU put it in the freezer? Why did it have to be her that did it?
BezzaBlue234@reddit
I never used to but I started to recently when I kept reading online that's it's healthier for you. Freezing bread lowers the glycemic index and increases the resistant starch.
Honey-badger101@reddit

I grew up poor🤷♂️ . Frozen bread and powered milk was the norm.
johnbobk@reddit
Lucky you had a freezer! We had a little bit, with a blue flap, @ the top of the fridge; ice pops were a luxury: 'only if there is room'! It was typical 60-70s lifestyle! Can I have some more please?
Really, considering 2/3rds of the world we, mostly, live quite well.
Subaruchick99@reddit
Also freeze for health benefits! Freezing bread actually lowers the glycaemic response a bit because some of the starch converts into resistant starch when cooled/frozen. Toasting from frozen seems to help too. It’s not magic, but studies do show smaller blood sugar spikes compared to fresh bread.
wickedwix@reddit
Always have a loaf of bread and some rolls in the freezer
nightfire_83@reddit

Eskarina_W@reddit
I would freeze a sliced pan or a bagel or a half loaf of freshly baked soda bread, but not a baguette or croissant.
achillea4@reddit
Always freeze bread - unless you are going through a loaf a day, it's just a waste to let it go hard or mouldy. What you don't do is keep it in the fridge.
Snickerty@reddit
One the few items you can refreeze too. Takes very little time to defrost and can be toasted from frozen.

We have 2 freezers.we buy as much whoopsied bread as we can and freeze it for the week. usually toast it or microwave to thaw.lasts ages.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
I don't often over buy bread so it can go off tbh. Why would I
Optimal_Collection77@reddit
I used to work for a large bakery and we used to sell frozen loaves to Spain. Also all loaves sold to restaurants are frozen and part baked
InviteAromatic6124@reddit (OP)
The bread at Lidl is like that isn't it?
Optimal_Collection77@reddit
Probably
Jebble@reddit
Back home in NL we have such amazing fresh bread, Germans would call it toast but they're fresh tasty soft loafs lije a warburtons but 20 times better. The are permanently in the freezer, take on out half an hour before you need it and it's amazing, always.
connectfourvsrisk@reddit
I can’t eat gluten and GF bread is often nicer toasted so I quite often keep my bread in the freezer. Plus, it means I don’t have to rush through the loaf.
For the rest of the family bread tends to get eaten quickly enough that there’s no point.
ClarifyingMe@reddit
Yes we do but I try not to because I'm so inconsistent. I just buy the small packs instead.
Ok_Requirement_7489@reddit
Yes - I buy several loaves at once - one goes in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.
GeminiCheese@reddit
After 10 years working on oil tankers and having defrosted bread; never. I'd rather waste half a loaf and spend 80p on a new one.
itwasntme85@reddit
Absolutely if you toast it then just pop it in the toaster frozen and it comes out the same
Fun_Gas_7777@reddit
We freeze bread a lot, yeah, always have. Its expensive and will go mouldy otherwise
prustage@reddit
Bread in our house gets eaten too quickly to make it as far as the freezer.
90210fred@reddit
How have you got someone in your life you call a partner without know their stance on frozen bread???
And yes, perfectly normal.
Prior-Fall-7753@reddit
Would rather not but if its certain death otherwise then ofc. Gotta defrost on a towel tho nobody wants soggy bread
auntie_eggma@reddit
I just toast it from frozen.
Prior-Fall-7753@reddit
Do you separate the slices before you freeze? Mine are usually impossible to get a singular slice on its own
auntie_eggma@reddit
It depends on the bread, but if I expect it to stick I just pop a piece of greaseproof or parchment paper between each slice.
AndrewHinds67@reddit
I normally put bread in the fridge and it lasts much longer than in a cupboard.
liltrex94@reddit
Yeah. Bread is easy to freeze and I hate wasting food just because I was too lazy to freeze it.
ReadyWriter25@reddit
We regularly freeze bread. It does bread no harm and it thaws out fresh.
Carl-Newchat25@reddit
I do sometimes. If for example I have a day's worth of a loaf before my day off going to the supermarket, I freeze the remaining part of the loaf, buy and consume the fresh loaf, then thaw and eat what was left of the previous loaf.
intangible-tangerine@reddit
Yes because I need gluten free so my loaf is just for me. I wouldn't bother to freeze a shared loaf that'll get used up quickly.
DiskBytes@reddit
Freezing bread is the best thing since sliced, no, wait.....
TheDoctor66@reddit
I get the rationale but a deep part of me is resistant to ever freezing bread
EuphoricCover8449@reddit
I've always frozen bread.
McDonalds burger buns are frozen for transport.
If I open a part baked bread product and only use half of it, I freeze the rest.
abstract_groove@reddit
Freezing bread is normal and your family who think it’s not are out of their fucking minds.
auntie_eggma@reddit
Unless I've got no room in the freezer, I always freeze bread. It's insane not to if you aren't going to use it up before it goes mouldy or stale.
Smart_Addendum@reddit
We don't freeze bread because it's usually finished. If you can't finish it then yeah use a freezer. Some freezers change the taste so I wouldn't and you should get out how many slices you would have or how ever many you would have in the next few days in one go, saves having to remember each day. The defrost function on my toaster shrinks the bread so I rather let it defrost on its own.
MuserofMusic@reddit
We always freeze bread in our house.
Riquende@reddit
The 'toast loaf' lives in the freezer and lasts me a couple of weeks. I only eat decent sandwiches at weekends so buy a nice small baguette, or tiger rolls etc with the Friday booze run.
morbidcuriosity123@reddit
I live alone and on a diet so dont want too much bread. . I'll have it for a couple days then freeze the rest.. always done it.
lokfuhrer_@reddit
Always have frozen bread. I don’t eat it often only for the odd sandwich or slice of toast so makes no sense to leave it to go mouldy in the cupboard
IcedWarlock@reddit
Yeah I freeze bread. My family go through phases where they eat loads of none at all so I buy 2 loaves a week and freeze 1.
On weeks they don't eat loads it's kept. On weeks they eat loads I end up thawing a few loaves and then topping up other weeks.
Nw5gooner@reddit
My wife introduced me to freezing bread. As a child my mum got it fresh from the bakers and we always got through it before mould entered the equation. As an adult, my bread went mouldy before I could eat it. Freezing it never entered my mind.
On the flip side. I had to teach her how to slice bread. She grew up on frozen sliced. I grew up on fresh unsliced loaves.
ClericalRogue@reddit
I dont really buy bread anymore now its just me, but living at home we always used to freeze bread.
yossanator@reddit
Ask her "Why does a toaster have a defrost setting?". I have a few freezers and do batch cook/bake as and when I get the chance. Loads of different bread/rolls in my freezers.
Single-Aardvark9330@reddit
Yes but I usually only use the frozen stuff for toast/toasties
Bitter_Tradition_938@reddit
Common practice, but ai don’t have enough space. Otherwise I totally would.
Euphoric-Wall-2576@reddit
I do because I hardly ever eat it.
Technical-Oven1708@reddit
I often buy yellow sticker bread and put it in the freezer you can get some really cheap items.
StrangerThings1106@reddit
I live a two minute walk from a One Stop so just buy bread when I need it.
Upstairs-Guitar-2722@reddit
My mum does this bc she would not be able to go through a loaf before it becoming stale or mouldy. The only reason why I don't like doing it is because the freezer part of our fridge is small and frozen bread takes up a lot of space.
Miserable-Ease-3744@reddit
Yep, absolutely. Sometimes I buy it with the intention of freezing most of it
Killahills@reddit
Yes, often freeze half a loaf so it doesn't go stale/mouldy while I use the other half.
Alternative-Plum6120@reddit
Yes I freeze bread!
Apprehensive-Top3675@reddit
Usually no, just because it tastes nicer when it's fresh and we go through it pretty quickly anyway, but I’d much sooner freeze it than let it go mouldy!
Classic_Mammoth_9379@reddit
My parents never did but I certainly tend to.
Affectionate-Owl9594@reddit
I’ve never needed to freeze bread, but have also never had the freezer space to do so
