How many of you are not having a holiday abroad this year?

Has anyone decided not to holiday overseas this year. The prices have shot up and the cost of living in UK is obviously so high as it is that some may be saving money.
antlered-god@reddit
Not holidayed abroad since 2007. It's too expensive and I don't see the point when there are so many lovely places in the UK. I also can't stand the hassle of going to and getting through airports. I'll be staying in the UK as usual again this year
Circa64Software@reddit
Haven't been abroad since 2001.
Unstableavo@reddit
I have one every 5-10 years 🤣🤣
yahyahyehcocobungo@reddit
Sounds about right.
Obscure-Oracle@reddit
Same, I can't afford that. By the time I get time off work I have so much stuff that needs doing around the house and garden then visit friends and family it's pretty much time to get back to work again.
Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
sounds like you need to just have a break? there are no awards for being so busy without end for years and years to the point where you never get to enjoy your life. Your friends, family and garden will survive and understand if you take time for yourself. I don’t know why people choose to live like this??
Broad-Preparation-73@reddit
Not who you replied to but mainly money, decent overseas holidays are expensive, huge risk of cancellations now, or scams, I've been out of the country twice in the last ten years and doing it again seems needlessly stressful which is really the opposite of what I want during my limited time off work.
Plus it means all the things that pile up and need doing at home won't get done which is what I normally use holiday for
Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
Far from my experience but if you don’t enjoy it then fair dos
Obscure-Oracle@reddit
I get decent time to myself, I get out fishing a couple of mornings per week before work, I get out on my mountain bike and hit some trails on my day off and I sometimes get out on my old motorbike with friends. I may be skint and can't afford to go on proper holidays but I do get some down time to enjoy life. To be honest, I don't know any different, this is just my normal but I'm happy.
mobuline@reddit
This is what you would call a staycation. I don't mind that at all.
Obscure-Oracle@reddit
Basically, but rather than doing all the fun stuff in my holiday time I squeeze it all into my working week then use my holiday time to catch up with all the stuff that takes multiple days. I have a few cheap hobbies and live on the south coast anyway which is awesome so I don't need to spend money on actually going on holiday. My hobbies cost a fraction of what someone would spend on a two week holiday while lasting all year. It really wouldn't suit someone who likes to travel abroad though.
Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
bruh why though. at a point it’s cheaper to holiday in europe including flights and grocery shop instead of eating out than it is living in the uk most of the time 😂
Cleffah@reddit
The Ignorance is astounding.
Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
What’s ignorant about my own lived experience being on a stretched budget and still being able to holiday every year? it’s different with kids yes but 5-10 years is crazy. What’s your experience?
StaticChocolate@reddit
Depends on if they have any animals or humans dependent on them! I’ve got a few dependents and it costs us more for the care than it does for the holiday normally, and it’s such a stress that we may as well not bother with the holiday
jiggjuggj0gg@reddit
Look into pet sitting services rather than kennels/catteries. There are lots for free (helps if your home is somewhere people might want to stay), but even the paid ones are way cheaper than boarding pets.
StaticChocolate@reddit
You’re right, we already take this sort of approach. It works ok for short trips - point is more that the costs can escalate quickly depending on someone’s circumstances! :)
I spent 4+ years as part of a care team for an elderly relative, and it was impossible to go away for more than 2-3 days without so much stress and cost.
Untrustworthy__@reddit
I stayed in an airbnb about 50 miles away and went hiking everyday, that was 3 years ago. Before that it was 2017 I actually went abroad (for business). I have the money to go anywhere for weeks without making a dent... I just never do lol 😅
runrunrudolf@reddit
The person you’re replying to didn’t say they holiday in the UK every year, just that they don’t holiday abroad. Decent chance they never book formal holidays. We do a formal holiday (and I use that term loosely because Butlins or a crappy caravan park is all I can afford) maybe every 2/3 years
Broccoli--Enthusiast@reddit
Your assuming they go on holiday at all, I can’t afford to holiday here or abroad , I’m paying enough for a one roof, never mind a luxury one
Acceptable-Split6348@reddit
Why do you think a holiday has to be luxury?
runrunrudolf@reddit
Yeah that’s the exact point I was trying to make
EcstaticBerry1220@reddit
Bet you’re shackled down by kids. Another great reason not to have them (for me)
Etnieturismo@reddit

Wise_Advertising_888@reddit
I booked my holiday for this summer nearly a year ago, ferry and European center parcs in the Netherlands. Considering it's in the school holidays (I have 2 boys of school age) it was a very decent deal. First time I've ever booked a holiday so far in advance, usually I do last minute deals.
reeldramafrankie@reddit
i go on a few but live with parents no extreme outgoings haha

We’re having one this year for the first time in 5 years, costs are crazy and it’s taken forever to save for this.

Maester_Magus@reddit
It's almost every thread on this sub, it's getting out of hand.
I don't mean to sound insensitive, but FUCK ME I'm tired of hearing about the bastard cost of living. It's like bots have been unleashed to periodically remind us how miserable we are; then it just turns into a contest to see who's worse off.
Warriorcatv2@reddit
Ah my bad mate. I'm sorry a good majority of people being poor & strapped for cash makes you feel sad. Have you tried perhaps browsing other subreddits that don't deal with the reality? Maybe r/eyebleach
Maester_Magus@reddit
Yeah mate we know everything is shit and everyone is skint. We're all drowning in the same cesspit. Doesn't mean we need 15 threads an hour about the exact same thing, does it? How is constantly hearing about it helping you in any way?
Warriorcatv2@reddit
Your on r/AskUK
A sub specifically for questions about the UK & it's current state. Of course your going to get a lot of negative posts about how rough things are.
Maester_Magus@reddit
I know this makes me look like an even bigger arsehole to you, but it's you're when you mean you are – not your*.
I'm sorry.

"It's like"
Unfortunately that's precisely what happens. Company bots perpetuate misery which gets people engaging more / spending more time, seeing ads. Political party bots stir up the misery so you think "I'll try something different" in the next election.
Scarecrow101@reddit
And all the povos that come out of the woodwork
ae_wilson@reddit
It’s so depressing to read. People almost trying to compete with each other about how often they don’t go on holiday. Truely miserable people
Nattie9797@reddit
Why would ai hang around here already done paris and lisbon. Off next month to santorini and then lake garda later in the summer if all goes well.
Good_Ad_1386@reddit
Already booked and paid for our second. Unfortunately, via Qatar Airways so it's anyone's guess what will happen.
Unemployable-Sunfish@reddit
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I haven't been abroad since 4 days in Sweden in 2024. Where are people finding the monies to go abroad so casually?
Icy_Mixture1482@reddit
It’s almost as if different people have different incomes and expenses.
Unemployable-Sunfish@reddit
Yes, that is why I am asking "where". What jobs are these people doing?
Icy_Mixture1482@reddit
I’m just doing marketing. Been to Thailand, Japan, China, and France this year.
Diligent-Worth-2019@reddit
Just wait it out, you’ll find value but nearer the time. I’d stay open minded about where you might end up though. Life’s an adventure right?!
Few_Exchange_7931@reddit
How are you all paying for these yearly holidays? Credit card debt?
Icy_Mixture1482@reddit
I pay on credit card for the miles and then immediately send the money from my bank account to my credit card when it shows up.
Actually I do all my daily spending on credit card for the perks and pay it off daily. So when the monthly statement comes, it’s usually only ~£20 for subscriptions that aren’t part of my daily spending.
ae_wilson@reddit
Despite what people on reddit think, lots of people actually earn decent money. Not everyone is financially struggling.
Few_Exchange_7931@reddit
Yea possibly…. Me & my wife have a joint income of around £110k a year. And we really struggle to go abroad…. I suppose we have 2 children though… and it depends on what you classify as ‘decent’
Broad-Preparation-73@reddit
Joint income of £85k, no kids, been abroad twice in the last ten years
Just can't afford it
KingGeedo91@reddit
Depends on the trip. If it’s a weekend away somewhere then will usually pay upfront out of pocket. If it’s a longer and usually therefore more expensive trip then my bank does 0% interest instalments
PowerfulAssHole@reddit
I've only had a holiday abroad about 5 times in my life. It's crazy to me how it's just the norm for people to go every single year, I wish I was that lucky.
Icy_Mixture1482@reddit
For me, it’s once every couple of months. Not holidays exactly but I go somewhere for a week whenever there’s a bank holiday/long weekend and work remotely most of the time and then have a long weekend wherever I am.
Currently in Thailand now.
Rough-Sprinkles2343@reddit
I assume it’s too expensive for you. If that’s your goal to do more traveling, look into growing your income or changing careers
ae_wilson@reddit
People will just downvote you and circlejerk in their own misery.
deprevino@reddit
Depends on who you are really. I find travelling really stressful! I've seen a few countries, but mostly I would rather stay and work on my projects if I get free time.
ReactionCreepy428@reddit
Same here! I really want to love travelling, but I'm just stressed the whole time and end up wanting a holiday to recover from the holiday lol.
xian0@reddit
My parents wouldn't plan anything beforehand, so everything was a faff. Where's the hotel? not sure, how to get there? dunno didn't book the taxi. They would walk into a town with no idea where to go that day trying to find a tourist info, they'd be late for everything, have tickets to nothing and not even any idea where they can eat.
w1gglepvppy@reddit
Not saying that this is your personal situation, but I work with people who bemoan the fact they can’t go away with their family- but they’ll be having takeaways 2-3 times a week or their husband spends Saturdays sat in the pub ploughing through the best part of £100. I’ve found it’s easier to get through life if you accept you don’t have money for everything you’d like to do and focus on what’s important.
SallyYoung1@reddit
Typically, people work hard, save up, and earn their breaks abroad. Most people aren't just lucky.
saddest-song@reddit
Lots of people cannot afford yearly holidays abroad, despite working hard and spending responsibly.
SallyYoung1@reddit
I'm aware, and for most of my life I've been one of them. There are people who have never worked a day in their lives who go on holidays every year on the taxpayer's dime too.
I was responding to the blanket statement that people who go on yearly holidays are just lucky.
Routine_Ad1823@reddit
Is it cost stopping you?
Key_Television_1910@reddit
For some it's one every couple of months
BrienneTheOathkeeper@reddit
I haven’t been able to afford a holiday abroad since 2018. Would love to go somewhere hot with the family but unless the tree in my back garden starts producing twenties, it’ll be another summer at home for us :(
EndRepresentative369@reddit
I have a Norway cruise booked but generally we enjoy our UK holidays more than abroad, they aren't any cheaper for us but very enjoyable in locations such as Loch Lomond, Lake District, Snowdonia etc. Not for everyone, when I liked sunbathing and drinking I only wanted abroad.
irdan87@reddit
4 this year
Potentially a 5th
Hate this place more every year but 2 of my 3 businesses are bricks and mortar so I’m stuck here
EcoNorfolk@reddit
3 week tour of Europe in June. 2 weeks somewhere warm in December
tharrison4815@reddit
I’ve not left the country since 2003
bloodsoakedgown@reddit
I probably won’t holiday for a few years. We did a cruise last year so will need time to save up to afford another holiday.
gelatottt@reddit
I find it considerably cheaper to holiday abroad than to stay in the UK for it, the cost of the train to the airport is usually more than my flights cost, accommodation abroad is much cheaper, so is eating out.
Resident-Total-1194@reddit
It really surprises me how many people see one holiday abroad a year as an expectation
Rude-Papaya9267@reddit
Absolutely not. Booked return flights to Seville for £80
Crochet-panther@reddit
I haven’t had more than a three day weekend in the UK since 2023 and it’s looking unlikely to change. 2023 was the first holiday for more than a long weekend since before Covid so at the moment I might be averaging once every decade?
Overseerer-Vault-101@reddit
I'm having my first solo trip bikepacking this month, costing me £500-600 for a week in the Netherlands. First time abroad in 10 years.
vandelay1330@reddit
I’m actually going on two just to get out of this forsaken hellhole
Ross1303@reddit
After years of doing the old package all inclusive to try and relax but keep the little one entertained we've decided the short UK trips had been taking as extra small breaks have been more fun/rewarding and end up cheaper anyway.
We've just got back from four days in Devon at the start of Easter school hols, done a few walks, seen Clovelly and Spekes Mill, chilled and swam for a day too. It was brilliant.
We've then got a week up towards the lakes and will check out Buttermere and then hit our usual tarns etc.
We will probably then do a few days at the end of the summer going to the touring cars at donnington.
As long as the weather holds it'll be great.
Think we were 300 all in for the accommodation with pool, self catering etc last week and about 400 for the lakes for the same facilities. Lob in a couple of tanks of petrol and we are way under what we spent last year on our summer holiday including what we will spend on food etc.
Wouldn't consider ourselves active people usually but days of longish (for us) walks and a decent amount of space in the accommodation has been boss.
Front-Tear-7467@reddit
I’m not and I work in the travel industry 😂
Cheeko-chi@reddit
Cheaper being away
Who_Knows_M3@reddit
First one in 20 years abroad so I can't really compare to much 😂
Tuarangi@reddit
Looking at a 2 week trip around Scotland, most places away from the cities above youth hostels are approaching £100 a night (some not even with breakfast) ad above. Might as well go abroad, did a week in Austria before, fly with Ryanair and pre-plan stuff, probably work out a lot cheaper
Tour-Sure@reddit
Domestic holidays are pathetically overpriced. The accommodation for my Malaysia trip (mostly ensuites), range from £12.50/night to £35/night. Food is incredibly affordable too. I'm budgeting £1600 max for two weeks, including everything. However if I hadn't booked flights already they'd be much more expensive now due to the war in Iran unfortunately.
JackfruitPractical84@reddit
Yes but what’s the cost of the flight, any visa, jabs, insurance, baggage, taxi transfers etc maybe clothing. There’s a lot more additional costs to going abroad especially out of Europe.
Tour-Sure@reddit
All of that is included or is not applicable to Brits. You can stay up to 90 days visa-free in Malaysia and Singapore. An hour-long Grab (SEA's Uber) ride is £12. You don't need extra vaccines for these two countries unless you are coming from a yellow fever risk country. A carry-on and rucksack will suffice for many people if you have on-site laundry, and most people have summer clothing and a raincoat already. It's really not that crazy.
JackfruitPractical84@reddit
A take on bag to go to Malaysia? That’s not going to be the case for 99% of people.
Tuarangi@reddit
They said carry on bag and rucksack and any airline flying there will have 20+ kg of baggage allowance not a separate charge. Staying in Europe and flying with a budget airline provided you pack well and are sensible (and better if you can use a laundry) it's still a lot cheaper than a couple of weeks in the UK in a lot of places
Tour-Sure@reddit
It's a separate charge with most European flag carriers these days. Jet2 is the exception to the rule according to their ads haha.
As you said, just use the laundry services at your accommodation/in the area and you'll be fine without hold luggage.
Tuarangi@reddit
I've not seen a separate charge for flights from UK outside Europe, though you're right the very bottom rung like BA Economy Basic or Virgin Economy Light doesn't have an allowance but the normal economy and above does unlike the budget airlines
JackfruitPractical84@reddit
Yes that’s true did forget most have an allowance
Tuarangi@reddit
If you're going with Ryanair you have to pay for a bag regardless so might as well use the limit. For a long weekend you could arguably get away with just carry-on, wear the heaviest boots and clothes and take off some when you get on the plane, buy disposable clothes abroad and leave behind - though that isn't environmentally friendly on top of flying! You could also get away with maybe 3 pairs of pants and socks/tops/shorts and wash them in the sink and dry in the hotel if you were away for a week
Tour-Sure@reddit
Of course it is if you're travelling solo. Please stop trying to nitpick my trip that's 90% booked when you've been proven wrong every time already
OldGodsAndNew@reddit
OP's example of Scotland it makes perfect sense why the prices are what they are. The highlands are massively oversaturated with tourists, mostly middle class people from other wealthy countries, it's entirely driven by demand.
I travel to the touristy parts of Scotland for work a lot, the same hotel that's £60/night in January can be £250/night in June
Tuarangi@reddit
Funny thing is we're not even talking about the Highlands, Arran, Islay, the 500 perhaps
OldGodsAndNew@reddit
All of those are in the highlands - anything above of the [highland boundary fault](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Boundary_Fault](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Boundary_Fault) is highlands. That includes the northern half of Arran even though it's South of Glasgow
The NC500 is one of the absolute busiest most tourist saturated areas. You'd probably get cheaper accomodation in the West Highlands (Lochaber, Ardnamurchan, Mull etc) than along the NC500 roads
Tuarangi@reddit
My regional references are whisky based, didn't realise the Highlands covered such an area. I might look at a cottage up that way and use it as a base rather than driving the loop, not that much of a car person and with fuel as it is, might not even be sensible, suspect diesel will be upwards of £2
xian0@reddit
Is there any part of the country where hotels are cheap? (with good quality, not talking about seaside places last decorated in the 50s). From what I can see any hotel with some charm is £100+ and the 5-star luxury places can be £400+. In lot of countries you could have a 5-star boutique hotel for £30. I consider UK holidays to be kind of a posh option.
oli_ramsay@reddit
Plus you're guaranteed better weather
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
Well, depends. It rains almost every day in KL
headphones1@reddit
Is it anything like Vietnam? Basically it'll rain proper hard, but then it'll stop and you're dry in minutes due to the sun.
Tour-Sure@reddit
Yes, and if you go in dry season there can be as few as eight days where that happens, usually in the evenings too.
Tour-Sure@reddit
It's eight days per month when I am going vs 12 where I am at the same time. I need a real summer anyway so it should be fine
Tour-Sure@reddit
100%
mata_dan@reddit
Hotel breakfast is never ever worth it anyway to be honest.
MorningLanky3192@reddit
Approaching? £100 per night in the highlands is cheap! Most places are way more than that. I was looking for a couple of nights in May and even a private room in a hostel was £130!
Just_Curious_76@reddit
Yep I hear you…costs tend to be up there holidaying in the UK don’t they, which makes no sense to me at all. Governments should, at the very least, be subsidising staycations so we 1) invest more locally and 2) avoid air travel (granted - I’ve no idea how that would work realistically, but hey). I travelled overland to a conference in Europe last year, to avoid flying. Was a great adventure, despite taking days to get there. But my gosh, it broke the bank. We bang on about curbing air travel, but it really is time for governments to come to some sort of agreement on incentivising that financially.
WhyToHide@reddit
Yes, I always think should I stay in the UK instead going elsewhere but then look up accommodation prices… £100/night on average.
KingPing43@reddit
Even £100/night won’t get you much at all in peak season, a low to mid range hotel. If you want something reasonably nice you’re looking at £200+
WhyToHide@reddit
Yeah, I agree. Last time was few years back in Scotland prices were a bit different back then
Altruistic_Lies@reddit
I stay at parkdean in Dornoch. Use it as a base camp, you can get 7 nights for mid 200s. I take a tent and spend a night or 2 in the middle of nowhere allowing me to truly venture into Scotland. Those saying it's pricey are looking for the same holiday they'd get abroad, but in the UK, what do they expect in a country with such a HCOL.
Tuarangi@reddit
I get your point but 1) we don't want to stay at a holiday park and 2) we want to explore a few islands and the far north of Scotland, meaning typically a couple of nights B&B or hotel or Air BnB so we can do some washing and drying. We're fortunate to be comfortably well off so can afford it, but just pointing out how expensive it can be.
We've previously rented a cottage for a week when in the UK as it is much cheaper as a base but limits how far you can explore a county
Toast4003@reddit
Flights to Europe cheaper than the bloody train.
Definitely worth going for short breaks.
Boggyprostate@reddit

Illustrious-Eye1673@reddit
We are retired and scrimp and save for each holiday, whether abroad or renting a beach cottage to gather the family and grandkids. Not going to the US this year has give us a little windfall, so we will go to Portugal in September probably.
LavenderClouds6@reddit
Choosing to use money to live enriching experiences and luxuries instead of having kifs
vonthepon@reddit
I travelled constantly for decades, earning peanuts, with my kids. You don't need to be a high earner or childless to see the world!
LavenderClouds6@reddit
Can see more and have more luxury without kids though. Even for yourself, without the kids it wouldnt have been as difficult as you'd have more funds for yourself
vonthepon@reddit
It wasn't difficult though. It was fun.
And I would argue I saw more of the real country by doing homestay, eating where the locals eat, volunteering in the community, taking local transport etc.
I have done luxury travel in later years, but it's honestly not for me- it feels like I'm in a bubble protected from the actual place I'm visiting. One 5 star hotel looks much like another, you could be anywhere. I also like to know my money is going to the local community, rather than some big global organisation.
Now when I travel, and I still have one teenager left who comes with us, we tend to mix it up.
We still stay in local budget rooms, eat with locals etc around 90% of the time, but we'll stay in more luxury places every now and then and we'll often get a car and driver or internal flights rather than overnight trains. We'll also fly business class if it's long haul - but this is more to do with physical limitations than anything else- I have scoliosis and arthritis and find it painful to sleep sitting up.
A flight is far less fun than a local bus or train!
Working-Spinach5795@reddit
I get 40 days of annual leave a year (not including public holidays), my partner and I both have a 6 figure income and we are happily child free. We also both have the option to work 6 weeks a year from abroad. We are also currently renting while we figure out what we want to do so our bills are relatively low. Diff priorities I suppose.
runrunrudolf@reddit
Ah no, not different priorities. If we had the same income and a/l you do we would be doing the same😂 congrats though! Sounds amazing

I’ve got a caravan holiday in lakes booked and a trip to Marrakesh. I’m a single parent to one and we’ll be going during term time. Prices are ridiculous if we were to go during the school holidays the £300 caravan holiday would be £800
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
No, I'll be going abroad sonewhere, though I'm a solo traveller and my costs are quite low.
mimivuvuvu@reddit
I find it more expensive. With a friend, I can at least split the hotel cost but going solo, you end up paying for the full room (so double the cost)
ALA02@reddit
Not if you stay in a hostel
Dunny2k@reddit
Couldn’t pay me to sleep in a hostel. That’s not me being snobby either but having strangers in the same room with you is just a complete no-no.
LavenderClouds6@reddit
Same here, its especially dangerous for women
Zealousideal_Ad_2777@reddit
Female only dorms are fine, and it is worth paying a bit extra to find a hostel with curtains across the beds.
LavenderClouds6@reddit
Going to and from female hostels can put you at risk even, men can target female-only areas knowing solo females can be found there. Theres was to reduce the risks but its still present and more for women than for men
Zealousideal_Ad_2777@reddit
I’ve never seen a female only hostel, just stayed in female only rooms in standard hostels.
LavenderClouds6@reddit
People prey upon any hostel. Solo and poor travellers use hostels, people who are often seen as easier targets
jiggjuggj0gg@reddit
Women stay in hostels all the time. Plenty of places with female only dorms. I can’t imagine living life this scared tbh
anabsentfriend@reddit
I've stayed in hostels round the world my whole life. I stay in female only dorms. Never felt unsafe.
Ambry@reddit
I've stayed in hostels a lot as a solo female and it's been fine - there's even female only rooms if you want to be extra safe.
PaleozoicQueen@reddit
Hostels also have private rooms, I have even had one once where my private room had a balcony and sauna.
ihitrocksbottom@reddit
They do but they're still around the same price as a room in a hotel
SaltyName8341@reddit
I'm looking at one now in Portugal £58 a night for private double with en suite Vs the hotels at £100 a night for exactly the same thing.
ihitrocksbottom@reddit
100 a night in Portugal? Sounds like a 5 star hotel
SaltyName8341@reddit
Nope Ibis
Kharenis@reddit
I went to Portugal last October and found hotels to be quite pricey. Apparently they've shot up massively the past couple of years.
PaleozoicQueen@reddit
No, it was not. I paid £25 a night for that room.

Dunny2k@reddit
So are you going to help me understand or are you just going to be mysterious about it?
MeMuzzta@reddit
Same here. I like to shit and fart in peace.
anabsentfriend@reddit
You're not meant to do that in the dorm room.
Ambry@reddit
Each to their own. I often travel with friends and share a hotel now but if I go solo I dont mind a hostel to keep things cheap and cheerful and to potentially meet people.
The__Pope_@reddit
It's the kind of thing that's fun 18-23 but after that it sounds awful
majkkali@reddit
That’s a no-go if you’re like over 30. When I was 20 I could do it no problem but 30+, nah f*ck that. I wouldn’t fall asleep with strangers around.
pharmamess@reddit
Take some nice bud and pass round a joint in the evening. They wouldn't be strangers at that point and you'll have no problem drifting away.
majkkali@reddit
Lol no, somehow that’s even worse. Anxiety would be through the roof.
I_SHAG_REDHEADS@reddit
Or do a Geowizard special and park bench it in a sleeping bag
omg_daisy@reddit
That's true but I find I spend less money overall than when I travel with a friend (maybe mine are bad influences lol)
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
I aim to stay in solo rooms in hostels (shared bathroom, private bedroom).
Zealousideal_Ad_2777@reddit
Same, I’ve been away five times in two years and never spent more than £250 on flights and accommodation. Usually a hostel and use Skyscanner for flights but as a solo traveller it’s easily doable. I’m lucky that I’m a student and work part time so I’m quite flexible and can take advantage of the random dates. I imagine it’ll be more difficult once I start full time work after uni.
VariousBeat9169@reddit
I nearly always holiday in the UK, could afford to go abroad, but UK is full of lovely places to stay and I find it more relaxing.
marting04@reddit
Never! I did 4 last year and I'm shortly off on my second this year!
TSC-99@reddit
I’m a teacher. Can’t afford holidays in school holidays.
TipsyMagpie@reddit
My husband is a teacher. I get all the fun of paying for holidays at peak rates without the perk of 13 weeks off per year 🙃
SeerUD@reddit
Don't forget, you also get the benefit of going while every other family is taking their kids too!
ThatAdamsGuy@reddit
I definitely don't have this problem to the same extent, but working in F1 mandates two weeks holiday in August. I'd love to use that midseason break as intended but like hell can I afford to pay the school holiday premium, especially when I would love to use my holiday to get away from kids in an adult only hotel but still have to pay the premium
TSC-99@reddit
Significantly less stress I would think
IrishMamba1992@reddit
Depends where you look, I’m a teacher also. Just have to find the right places, obviously costs go up but one of the best things about teaching is the holidays, so we need to use them!
8NaanJeremy@reddit
If you can stump up the money for the flights, July/August is the low season in SE Asia (and other countries which experience monsoon rains at that time). You can get a very nice resort in the South of Thailand for about £20 a night. The other costs on top of that like food, taxis, entertainment are also very reasonable.
headphones1@reddit
Yes but the cost of the flights is ridiculous. We paid about £2750 for the two of us in August 2022 to Vietnam. This doesn't include flights we took in Vietnam. Some hotels were proper cheap though. Food too.
8NaanJeremy@reddit
I'm seeing £700 return this coming summer, if you go in July
Ok-Personality-6630@reddit
Timing is really important IMO. If you don't care too much where you go. Just look for deals a few weeks prior
Ok-Personality-6630@reddit

UK holidays can be outrageously expensive for a comparable (or worse) experience than going abroad. We've stayed in some decent ish hotels / rentals for a weekend that cost the same as going abroad for like 2 weeks lmao
I'm going abroad for a cycling holiday, but I'll probably be doing a UK-based cycling holiday too. Later in the year my wife and I should be doing our belated honeymoon, and we're hoping that'll be abroad too.
Purple_Moon516@reddit

Purple_Moon516@reddit
Mostly around Europe but one to Asia, China.
srogijogi@reddit
Literally just checked the prices of flights for June. Picked a popular location: Thailand. Prices? Absolutely ok. Checked another one: August, to Istanbul. Prices? Typical. Can you elaborate further on those "prices which have shot up"?
daz1987@reddit
No holiday at all this year. Just got a pup so all hands on deck with him for a little while. We'll look at something next year.
FranzLeFroggo@reddit
S/O is waiting for surgery. Knowing my luck, the day after we book the flights, we will have the date. Probably going later in the year to Europe but a few festivals lined up during the summer.
Warriorcatv2@reddit
Haven't had a holiday in just about a decade. If you have a holiday, great, I just don't understand how anyone can afford it unless you're quite well of. Do you take a loan? Credit card?
ae_wilson@reddit
You don’t need to be well off to go abroad from the UK. The pound is stronger than most currencies and the UK has decent wages. If you can’t afford £60 return tickets to Spain over the course of decade, then that is seriously concerning.
Warriorcatv2@reddit
Right because as we all know the only pricing that goes into a holiday is the cost of travel. Absolutely nothing else. No insurance, no food, no lodging, no other expenses. No considerations for medical issues, pets & everything else that goes on at home. Oh & jobs of course. Because everyone can just take annual leave whenever without reprcusions.
ae_wilson@reddit
Repercussions when taking annual leave once a decade for a holiday? Oh lord. You do realise that people have different financial priorities, right? Getting a pet is an active choice that has financial repercussions. Not exercising or eating like shit is an active choice that has financial repercussions.
Many people choose to limit their spending in other ways to afford regular holidays.
Wholesome_crab@reddit
I pay for mine in installments. You get the option when you book with tui and years ago I did it with Virgin. Ive just paid off one for September and started paying one for next July, so you can do it quite far in advance which brings the installments down. Otherwise Id never go.
TheScrobber@reddit
I'm just not fussed about going overseas, in fact I let my passport expire and I can't be arsed to renew it. I'd rather spend my annual leave having random days off and long weekends.
Sad-Garage-2642@reddit

Tonybham01@reddit
At least two. Christmas in the sun is already booked.
Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
Same here - did it for the first time last Christmas and it made such a difference getting away from the relentless cold and rain. And you get a partial opt out of the Christmas consumerism. It's gonna be an annual fixture for us now.
Acrobatic-Ad-943@reddit

Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
Taiwan for three weeks over the Christmas and New year period just gone. Another Asia trip already booked for next Christmas.
Maleficent_Resolve44@reddit

Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
Very accommodating and friendly, super safe and no visa required for Brits. We're a white British family but I speak the language. However, tourists manage fine without speaking Chinese.
Weather is humid in the north in winter, around 20° but we spent Christmas at a beach resort in the south where the weather was beautiful, high 20s consistently.
cheesewindow@reddit
We go away in the middle of January for two weeks somewhere warm for the same reason. Helps break up the greyness and wetness and cold of the UK. It’s so good isn’t it!

JamesTiberious@reddit
I travel abroad solo quite often as the other half is tied to school holiday times (when everything is 3/4+ times more expensive). Recommend using a day or two annual leave every few months and getting out of the UK for some 3 night long weekends. Saves on energy and food bills, doesn’t quite become ‘saving money by going away’ territory, but it’s not far off.
alfa_omega@reddit
Any suggestions? I love solo travel
ConsiderationMurky29@reddit
Copenhagen, Seville (Cordoba and/or Cadiz day trip), Naples (Pompei day trip), Sofia (Plovdiv day trip), Ljubljana (Lake bled day trip), Rome, Girona (Besalu day trip), Barcelona. Even Marrakech (day trip to Essaouira) if you can stretch to 4/5 days.
Just some off the top of my head that i have done and enjoyed. Loads more too, plenty of interesting long weekends to be had in Europe.

Planning to go abroad every 2 months. Literally cheaper than holidaying in the UK.
Holidays abroad for Brits are incredibly cheap compared to other countries. Decent wages and the pound is stronger than the Euro.
No-Structure-1980@reddit
When I booked mine, it said "congratulations, your holiday is in 368 days". If I'd waited another 8 weeks, I would have found out I was being made redundant. I've already paid in full and if they up the price now, I'll have to cancel. As a solo traveler, I'm already being charged double.

I haven't been abroad in 11 years, I live alone so most my holidays are solo and I just don't feel safe going alone and can't afford the 'solo' travel stuff with groups. So I just go to the coast in the UK, or one of the cities; depending on my mood.
Alastair097@reddit
In July I'm quitting my job and going travelling for 1 year so technically I'll be on a permanent holiday!
shatteredrealm0@reddit
I had a sabbatical for 6 months about 4 years ago to do that.
I’ve been in the uk about 20 days total since then haha.
Alastair097@reddit
Wow, that's amazing!!
I asked for a sabbatical but work refused my request. So who knows, I could end up like you since I technically don't have a date I need to be back in the UK
shatteredrealm0@reddit
I can honestly say it was the best decision of my life, it was a very stars aligned moment and I do feel incredibly luckily almost every day that I get to wake up and not be in the Midlands or cold.
I’ll indulge you more in how it went: My work were ace to be honest, I was the only salesperson in a new side of the business, when I had my last day the director said don’t feel like you have to come back if something changes your mind, just tell us a month before it ends.
This sounds very cliche but I had every intention of coming back, I’d only had 3 jobs in 10 years so I’m not one of those people that would bounce from job to job, and I’m not really someone to just move to another country.
Then about 6 weeks prior to coming back I was walking down the street and I had what I can only describe as a reality snap, and my brain just said ‘yeah but you don’t have to go back’ and I just.. agreed? So I mulled on it a bit more and decided yeah.
Come 1 month and 1 day before I’d spent about 30 minutes psyching myself up to call the director, then my phone rings and i look and it’s my manager, unusual as he’d normally just message me on IG for a normal chat.
I don’t know why, but I answered the phone and just said ‘you’re leaving aren’t you?’ And he said ‘yeah and I bet you are too’ and I said yeah, I’ll leave it till tomorrow to tell the director my intentions then.
vonthepon@reddit
I spent 20 years living and working in various Carribbean, Latin American and Asian countries, then another 12 in SE and Central Asia and the Middle East working online. The sense of freedom was amazing. I've been back in the UK for 15 months and it's awful. For various reasons I'm stuck here for another 3.5 years, but I'm already planning and saving for my big escape!
shatteredrealm0@reddit
Yeah I think for me it’s the freedom too, not so much the I can do whatever/whenever but more the fact that I’m not constrained to the UK? If that makes sense. The only two times I’ve been back were once to sell all my stuff I’d put into storage and sort loads of admin out, the second was to see my Nan for the last time as she’d got a terminal diagnosis, and my grandad said he’d be annoyed if I did the round trip for the funeral as well haha. I can honestly say I have zero plans to go back voluntarily, it’s not that I hate the UK I just don’t think it suits me as a person and I much happier elsewhere.
vonthepon@reddit
It also helps that I lived in cheaper countries, but was paid a western salary, which meant I could work part time and still have an ok standard of living! I would work 1 full day and 2 half days and the rest of the time was my own.
IronSkywalker@reddit
So what do you do now?
Ok-Personality-6630@reddit
Yeah but what do you do now, we are missing half the story
shatteredrealm0@reddit
For the first year or so not much because I’d had some luck with investments, it was supplemented with some online B2C businesses, for half of the 2nd year still not much to be honest! Then I’d decided I really really wasn’t going back so started a business in a niche that meant I also got a ‘special’ visa where i live, can still work for myself but its still when I want rather than when I have to as it’s mostly online.
Excali20@reddit
Out of curiosity how much money are u taking or using for the year
Alastair097@reddit
It's difficult for me to know how much I'll spend because I'll be in a variety of expensive and cheap countries, but I've set aside £20k for it.
I might go under this, or I might go a bit over, I am unsure. But I think £20k is a good estimate.
Ill try and travel as cheap as I can by staying in hostels where possible
humblevessell@reddit
£20k is a good budget I did 5 months in Asia on about £7k maybe a bit more
OldGodsAndNew@reddit
Partner and I done 3 months living in a van in Europe last summer, most expensive place was Switzerland, cheapest was rural Poland. Average over the entire trip was £30 each per day, including fuel for the (small) van, excluding car ferries to & from Ireland + France
We're pretty outdoorsy so most days were spent hiking, wild swimming etc, but did a decent amount of paid activities and got fucked by some mental motorway tolls in France
Ambry@reddit
If you go to more affordable destinations you'll be fine with that! Some will be more expensive but if you go to much of Central America, Southeast Asia, India etc. money will go far.

WhyToHide@reddit
Where are you going? I guess everywhere!
Alastair097@reddit
USA (for hiking in national parks) -> Peru -> some other South American countries which I'll decide when I'm there, I'm going to wing it-> Vietnam -> Taiwan -> Japan -> South Korea -> China :)
vonthepon@reddit
They're pretty pricey countries, with the exception of Vietnam. I'd say China and South America sit between Vietnam and the other places. Taiwan is fantastic, as is Japan, but they're both pretty pricey. As a family of 3 we spent around £4500 per month there, and that was with cheap apartments and hostels, slow travel, doing most of our eating at home or from convenience stores, no alcohol. Korea is slightly more expensive. Vietnam we spent maybe £2k a month max, same in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. I found central and South American prices a shock after South East Asia, but they weren't actually that bad.

When I was a kid we had a few years with one holiday abroad. After 2008 though we only ever did UK holidays: Whitby, Anglesey, Newquay, Fort William, etc. Lots of BnBs (proper ones, not AirBnB) and static caravans. If you get the weather it's glorious, and a hell of a lot cheaper.
What I'm saying is that you can still get a week or two away even if it's not via plane. Yes it sucks, but it's not all or nothing.
LemonCurdJ@reddit
I haven't consciously decided not going on holiday but after a rather disappointing holiday to Barcelona in February, I'll be taking some time to really think and plan where I go next. I want to go for a particular reason rather than "I've never been there, let's go!" Not a whimsical person but rather pragmatic instead.
That said, I'm naturally not a holiday person and probably will save to go away next year. I would like to do a beach resort holiday but they are inherently different vibes to a (solo) city holiday.
Me not going away has nothing to do with money but rather, its purpose for me - what will it serve me? When I have the answer, I will book my next holiday!

KitsuneKamiSama@reddit
You people have holidays?
Top_Difference5361@reddit
It depends what you define as holiday - is holiday just merely leaving the country, or going all inclusive and not giving a damn about anything?
Because if it's the first one, there are plenty of under £30 flights round trip (including even on same day) you could take and make a city break holiday out of it. And if you go somewhere like the Balkans, then it genuinely can be cheaper than just being in the UK, i.e I got an apartment for a night that fits 4 people for around £20 in the centre of Prishtina (so a fiver each), but again, each to their own definition of holiday, as I assume this is not for everyone.

We booked back in October so we’re heading abroad (unless it gets cancelled). There are still reasonably priced holidays to be had & the UK is just a miserable place at the moment.
cuccir@reddit
We're going to a campsite in Britanny. Prices have gone up but you can still get pretty good deals looking around, even in school holidays. Not Eurocamp (not that they're bad), an independent one, well rated and much better value.
The key is not to go to the obvious destinations and book either early or late.
Sarcastic_Rhubarb@reddit
Enjoy! We went to a campsite in Brittany last year for two weeks with our two very small children, got home and booked exactly the same campsite for this year as soon as bookings opened. Staying in a mobile home/chalet sort of thing and going out of school hols but it's costing us less then half per night what we're paying for a holiday cottage in Norfolk for a few nights in school holidays over summer.
Humble-Cabinet-5616@reddit
My last holiday was a wedding abroad last year and it’s been over 10 years since I had a holiday that wasn’t for somthing like that even in the UK I get time off and I either need it too recover and have a life outside of work ie dating, taking care of my health and getting through a to do list or it’s for some wider family event I feel obligated to go to though don’t always actually want to go to but at least generally get decent photos out of

We go to India to see friends and family every year. Other than that, getting a Schengen visa appointment is so difficult these days that we just holiday in the UK.
Have stayed in Portsmouth, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh in the last 2 years. This holiday it's Sheffield.

leclercwitch@reddit
I don’t think we are. We were gonna go to Crete but because of a lot of things, we decided against it. We’ve got house stuff going on, I’m gonna go for my driving test, plus the war close enough geographically to where we were gonna go, and the risk of closed airspace was enough to put us off. Everything is so expensive even though we both work full time we can’t justify it with or without extenuating circumstances.
pokeyminkymoo@reddit
I've had one already and have another two booked for before the end of May. I don't have children, am single and travel alone mostly. I'm hoping that I'll have another 2 later on in the year.

Haven't holiday'd abroad in over 10 years (I'm old, so there's an element of done-it-and-seen-it-already). Typically choose to enjoy our own country these days, and loving it.

Haven't been abroad in 11 years since my great nanny's funeral
First it was bc of my father being an inconsiderate cunt and him drinking his money away, so I had to step in and help paying for the bills. Now despite having a bachelors, it's still super difficult to get a good job. But even the crappy jobs I apply to I get rejected or ignored from.
So unfortunately I am unable to take a holiday, even in tge country.

I went on holiday to the US in January and February. Coming back in Feb, my husband left his passport on the plane so we haven't been back since because he is passport-less.
But we're about to book to go back in June, and we'll go back in November too.
If it weren't for my husband I'd be avoiding the US for sure. I love the UK and camping and all that but he just loves going to the US, and he's paying so he gets to choose lol.

Fk all to do with cost. The world is nuts at the moment and I don’t feel comfortable travelling abroad. I’ll just do some stuff here in the uk.
fergie_89@reddit
So I know I'm lucky.
We've had one weekend trip to europe, and in a few weeks fly to Greece for a week.
Husband and I both grew up working class (he single mum, me social services).
We both earn good money and for my birthday and Christmas presents he pays for us both to have a week abroad somewhere. We are child free (except our senior void) and own our own home with a mortgage. So holidays give us a break. I take my work phone everywhere with me except abroad. .

IT's not cost of living, it's the cost of taxation.
That's what's hammered our income (for those who actually work), and made everything so expensive. And there's more kicking in right now, and more to come.
little-ladybug-29@reddit
I am not having 1, but having three God willing. Already did one in winter, hopefully two more by the end of this year. Uk holidays are just as expensive, even staying in London, and going for outings with the kid is never less than 100£ minimum, so what’s the point? This country is eating up all my money anyways. Money comes and goes, but our mental health and seeing amazing places and people are more important.

Booked to stay in Cornwall for 7 days in June. I have never been before. One of my favourite breweries is there and from the videos on YouTube it looks amazing.
Makes you think though, a very decent abroad package holiday for myself, my wife and our 1 year old would probably be around £2500 and we will probably spend that in Cornwall. How is it 2 plane journeys and all inclusive accommodation is the same price as driving 6 hours in the UK to stay!?
Altruistic_Lies@reddit
How will you spend that much in Cornwall? Fancy hotels? Get a seafront caravan on a nice site, you'd be below 25% of 2500, free to explore and a nice beach to spend time with your little one.
Spiritual_Long8806@reddit
We did that one year thinking we’d spend most of our time on the beach. It rained nearly every day.
Trigger3192@reddit
Sorry the weather wasn’t great for you, I do have some trepidation about the weather myself. Hopefully there’s some sunshine and it doesn’t just leg it down the entire time !
Trigger3192@reddit
I probably overstated how much we will probably spend and maybe it won’t be as expensive as we think but I’d say we might not be far off £2000. Our accommodation for the duration is £1300 which is in Hayle so we’re 20 minutes from St Ives which is great, we will buying food to bring with us, eating out multiple times a day for at least half the trip, brewery trips, boat rides, souvenirs, fuel to do the 720 mile return journey (we do have a PHEV but most of the trip will be using the petrol)
I think after a few days we might be looking at having spent a couple hundred already. Surely a lot of people have experienced that feeling of being on holiday relaxes the grip on the spending and you’re in the moment and reality/normal life seems removed so the consequences don’t seem to apply until you’re out of that mist of holiday tunnel vision. Especially when we haven’t had any holidays since our honeymoon 2 years ago. This will be our first holiday with our son too.
Much_Winter2202@reddit

Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
why?? what kind of holiday are you planning where you can’t afford to leave the country more than once in 3 years ??
riotlady@reddit
We just don’t have a lot of money, not sure why all the question marks 😂 This year we’re going to a UK caravan park for about £350, in a year or two we might take the kids to an apartment in Spain or something.
Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
It might not be as expensive as you expect. We had a week on the costa del sol last summer for £500, flight and apartment for three of us. Took public transport to and from the airport at either end so the expenses were really just food and drink costs, which are cheaper than the UK.
riotlady@reddit
Oh wow, yeah that’s not bad at all!
louisejanecreations@reddit
Whenever I look at uk prices the cost of somewhere is about the same as flights, accommodation and depending on where you go also spending money in places abroad.

The latest available figures show that 56% of people in the UK went abroad. The figures don't capture the purpose of every visit.
You need to take business trips and other non-holidays out of that. Figures for business trips don't let you work out how many individuals went abroad because many go more than once. (eg15% of people who travel abroad for business go at least weekly)
So, probably fewer people go abroad on holiday than many people think.
SockSpecialist3367@reddit
I'm one of those people. Not weekly, but I go abroad for work several times a year. When I have time to myself the last thing I want to do is be in an airport so I stay local and just enjoy doing nothing.
Educational_Cow111@reddit

ButterscotchTop194@reddit
Rarely ever go abroad. The UK has some amazing places and it's far cheaper and easier.
Smelly-Bottom@reddit
It is cheaper and faster to get to France or Paris than it is to anywhere in the South of England from North Scotland.
It is unbelievably expensive to get to Wales. I know because I decided to give up £300 concert tickets after weeks of trying to plan a feasible route which wouldn't cost the same as a week in the sun for 2 nights in Cardiff.
ButterscotchTop194@reddit
We Airbnb and it's significantly cheaper than going abroad. We have two dogs mind, so staying in the UK saves kennel fees.
Beebityboo@reddit
Taking my kids out of school for a week in May to go abroad for the first time as their Grandma is terminally ill and my autistic daughter has been really struggling. We saved so much and are risking fines/legal trouble for taking them in term time…and now we have to worry it will go tits up because of the fuel situation. I know there are way more important things going on in the world, but I really need this trip to go ahead and be fun for the kids.
Consult-SR88@reddit
Last abroad holiday was 10 years ago. Biggest thing that stops me is having a dog. His boarding costs £250 a week so I can then go spend £100 on camping in the Lake District. Genuinely thinking of cancelling the two weeks of boarding I’ve booked him in for & saving the cash instead.
Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
do you know no one that would mind walking your dog for a week??
Consult-SR88@reddit
There’s no one who could look after him for me & I wouldn’t leave him home alone for days with just the dog walker coming to feed him & take him out. At the boarding place he gets lots of playtime & running about time as well as sleep time.
Wholesome_crab@reddit
Ive been looking at doing a home exchange. You can get ones where you include your pet, and in return they may have one their end for you to look after. Its got a subscription for the year, but if you take into account boarding & accommodation, it still works out cheaper.

Decimus-Drake@reddit
I haven't had one in over 10 years. I don't think that's about to change.
Dave_Tee83@reddit
Yeah, nah. You need disposable income for that. I've got no plans for any holidays, abroad or in the UK this year. Running a household on your own on one wage is just too tight at the moment. If I save up here and there I'll maybe go abroad again in a few years from now. Otherwise I just spend my time off work pottering around the house, going out for local walks, and maybe a breakfast out or a takeaway away as a treat for the week.
Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
If you sacked off that takeaway every week you could afford a trip to Spain. People prioritise what's important, I suppose.
Dave_Tee83@reddit
Where did I say I have a takeaway away every week? I said I might treat myself to a takeaway away while I'm on a week off work! Which happens what, 3 or 4 times a year.
Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
Apologies, that's my reading comprehension being off. I read it as you having a weekly takeaway as a treat.
Dave_Tee83@reddit
No worries, I can see how it could come across that way. I wouldn't be complaining about the cost of living if I was flush enough to be buying a take away every week.
Appropriate_Tax2602@reddit

Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit

Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
Basic holiday in the summer holidays to somewhere that I can actually relax is 1.5k plus. I can't afford that. Sorry if that upset you somehow.
Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
It's really not. Unless you have some very odd prerequisites for relaxing.
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
My son and I can't cope with crowds and noise. Pretty normal for autistic people
Admirable-Web-4688@reddit
Let me recommend to you Joensuu in Finland - you'll barely see another soul while you're there, you can explore wonderful scenery and enjoy the weirdness of Finnish culture and cuisine. Incredibly quiet.
Average £250-300 return (but can be cheaper) and hotels from £60 per night.
Anyway, there are literally thousands of places you could go off the beaten track and get away from crowds and noise. Many much cheaper than Finland.
Distinct_Mastodon463@reddit
doesn’t upset me of course. As someone that needs to explore to feel alive, I know trips to anywhere in europe even in peak season can be no more than 2-300 per person for a few nights and a great time, including flights. It just means you may eat out less. I’m guessing you have kids? If not then don’t travel at peak times. It makes me sad to think people seriously stop themselves bc they believe the cost is far higher than it truly is.
the-holy-one23@reddit
Home is so bleak at the moment, instead of decorating our new house, we are doing many holidays abroad. We have just returned from a long weekend at Disneyland Paris.
Spiritual_Long8806@reddit
We stayed in a haven park last year for a week. The actual caravan with the play passes was reasonably priced but the activities were a total rip off. We unfortunately didn’t get great weather that week so with the kids activities + food we ended up spending way more than we thought we would.
This year we’re taking the kids out of school for a week for a holiday abroad. We don’t even care about the fine, it would still work out cheaper than going away during the school holidays.

I can only base it on my own experience but I work a bog-standard job and most people I'm aware of go abroad every year, from the cleaners up to people in professional roles. It's not really any more expensive than holidaying in the UK.
EqualTune4587@reddit
Not been abroad since 2019. I have young kids and the type of holiday I enjoy (exploring, zero itinerary, making it up as we go) gets harder with young kids. UK subs are just a constant competition to act as penniless as possible to the point that they actually try to look down on people with money but spend it in what they consider to be the wrong way, like buying a new build house rather than warhammer figures. That said...I'm far from convinced UK holidays are cheaper...A self catering cottage somewhere like Devon/Cornwall/Highlands/West Wales is going to rush you 2 Grand for a fortnight, and then you've meals and petrol on top...I reckon you could easily geta decent foreign holiday for less.

I haven't been able to take a holiday abroad since I was a teen
DrainpipeDreams@reddit
Not had a holiday abroad since the one time we went in 2013. We've been making do with caravan parks and camping since then. Got to live to your means.
SheriffOfNothing@reddit
Not sure what to tell you. I’m writing this in a hotel lobby in Greece, surrounded by British people.
OkTechnician4610@reddit
Not going anywhere this year - too much extra money I don’t need a holiday away I can survive without one. Have my own business & cannot afford to take time out.
MobileOrdinary6827@reddit
I've not had a holiday abroad since October 2018.
banana_bear_918@reddit
I am 40 in June, and had booked myself a luxury holiday to celebrate. All paid up, was so looking forward to it, havent been away for 9 years. Then my landlord called to tell me he is selling up. Couldn't justify the luxury holiday anymore because of the money tied up in it, so I cancelled. Money back to raise some deposit towards buying the house. I am quite upset about my holiday, as I worked for it and deserve it. As it turns out, my landlord is not interested in negotiating a private sale price with me, so I cant buy the house anyway, and am now frantically trying to find somewhere else within my capabilities to buy. So I'm not having a holiday abroad this year and I might not have a home soon either 🤷♀️
Numerous-Corner-6303@reddit
My friend, I haven't had a holiday abroad since 2008.
DistinctVariation775@reddit
I did go to Thailand for 2 weeks in 2017. Because a ex bf wanted to go. It was nice. But im not a holiday person. I haven't even had a passport since it ran out in 2018. And i dont holiday in the UK either.. the last 6 years have been spending all my money and time on my dream home.. creating a place i never want to leave so i dont need a holiday because there is nothing to get away from 😁 (just to clarify.. i do go for weekends away and do visit other places occasionally) and when im older i would like to visit a few different countrys. But forthe last 10 year I haven't wanted to holiday like a 'proper' holiday. A night or two away from home has been way more than enough.
kimmyganny@reddit
We booked this year's holidays last year, so we locked in the prices early. Our flights are in June though, the question is whether the flight will even take off. Not sure if in June there will be a crazy jet fuel shortage. So we will wait and see!
OwlDust@reddit
I haven't had a holiday abroad since I was a kid.
AttersH@reddit
I’ve just got back from the Netherlands. Got two more holidays booked, in Greece & Italy in summer. And will probs do a couple nights somewhere with mates later this year.. frankly, getting abroad & exploring is the highlight of my years! I’m very fortunate I can afford it but I do plan carefully & get some good deals etc!
The Netherlands this Easter has easily cost us less than holidaying in the UK, even with flights. Weather is just as naff but it’s so much better to get somewhere new. We hired bikes & saw so many towns via cycling everywhere. What a joy!
SteelSparks@reddit
We’ve got 2x sprogs and the wife’s a teacher so we are well and truly stuffed when it comes to cheap holidays abroad. Remortgage last year basically ate up what we’d have usually put aside for a nice 2 weeks away.
Sure, it could be worse, but we earn what most would no doubt say is really good money, life should be better. I dread to think how we’d be doing if I’d not got the last couple of promotions.
Climbing the career ladder to stand still is a bitter pill to swallow.
KonkeyDongPrime@reddit
We have a baby under 1 year old so probably not going to bother going abroad this year, unless we fly from a local airport which is pricey AF and limited destinations.
tulki123@reddit
I’m probably going to trim back a little, I only have a holiday to Mauritius booked and a small hiking trip in Switzerland but that’s my main trips of the year. Maybe do 3-4 long weekend breaks later in year. I will be making more sensible decisions though (more Eastern Europe and less alps) and less BA and more easyJet and maybe a day less each time I go. I tend to pack light and eat / live cheap though when away but I can’t stand being in the UK too much 🤣
I have taken it as an opportunity to try and see more of the UK though but given costs here to do anything it’s not radically more to go away. I don’t tend to pay for most of my flights anyway just use points.
FastStable5945@reddit

We aren’t having a holiday abroad this year which sucks because it’s usually my only chance to see some family who live there. We’ve decided to use the money we would normally spend to make our back garden low maintenance and are planning to have a cosy summer at home
Helena_Handcart1@reddit
No. I’ve cancelled my annually renewing travel insurance policy, too. So, yeah. For this year at least, no foreign holiday for me.

TomLondra@reddit
I am old enough to remember a time when nobody had ever been abroad, for a holiday or anything else. And I fucking hate airports. There is no need to wreck the planet by pointlessly flying to a hot place where you just get drunk and then come home.
That-Chain-5139@reddit
Ok well not one single person is going to tell me not to go abroad and enjoy my life whilst i can when those who claim we need to ‘save the planet’ are letting off thousands of tonnes of bombs and missiles that - idk - maybe causing a few fires?? And starver, trumpy ass and that lizard bill gates are all swanning around on their private jets, private yachts, private helicopters whilst tryna preach to all of us about how we must stop using gas - GTFOOH.

IrishMamba1992@reddit
Such a reddit comment section overall this one. You’d think not a single person ever went on a holiday from these responses
Separate_Rise_8932@reddit
I'm not seeing that? I'm seeing most say they are going on holiday/multiple holidays.
Alastair097@reddit
I opened this thread 15 mins after it was posted and every comment was the opposite of that
ScientistJo@reddit
Do you think not going abroad is the same as staying in your house?
Alastair097@reddit
No I do not, why?
ScientistJo@reddit
You seemed to be implying that that majority of comments were saying they weren't going on holiday.
Alastair097@reddit
Yes that's correct. In the first 15 mins of this post every comment was like that.
The UK is a beautiful place, and I adore Scotland and Wales for hiking and nature. I am not saying you need to go abroad for it to be a holiday that's for sure
ScientistJo@reddit
I must have come to it later, as when I read the comments, it's a mix of people who do and don't holiday abroad, and not many saying they don't holiday at all. Anyway, even a "staycation" is better than working!
Alastair097@reddit
All good! Agreed haha
ScientistJo@reddit
I go on three holidays a year, all in the UK. I'm on holiday right now. Why do you think not going abroad means not going on holiday?

I have 2 holidays every year, one long one with husband and a shorter one solo. Normally visit the US to see family but not this year and probably not the next 2.
thr0w4w4y2189@reddit
Took a punt and bought flights to the US during the first stage of the political stuff.
I got an absolute bargain - 4 of us, summer holidays, west coast usa - 1050 flights and accom coming in at 800. We spent more going to the south of France last year and renting a caravan. I know it doesnt include everything. For context the holiday we had in Majorca 2 years ago for the same dates is currently £3800.
Of course my spouse doesnt want to go to the US, but we've done a load of european countries the past few years. I always enjoy holidays to the US, it might be a hyper fixation of mine but it's a lot different.
We tried to find a UK holiday with all the amenities, hot tub, things to do that wasnt in somewhere like Jaywick and it was just impossible to find anything below 2800 for a week. UK holidays have a stark divide, it seems to be going to sad looking muddy seaside to stay in a prefab cabin to eat super noodles, or alternatively staying in a centre parcs worthy luxe lodge that costs 4k a week. There are no in betweens.
DevilishlyHandsome63@reddit
With the world situation as it is, I'm staying in the UK this year.

MeMuzzta@reddit

ExplanationPutrid205@reddit
Day to day life sucks and lifestyle too short not to treat yourself. A wee getaway to Spain is always relatively cheap especially if you get a package holiday with flight included. Even just for a few nights. Me and my partner are looking at Greece and yes its seeming expensive but we decided after a hard year why not?
rjcanty@reddit
Went to Tunisia 3 weeks ago and going back again this Friday. Price wise it seems to be the best and 20-24c is perfect for a sun wimp like me.
quantumbeet@reddit
It always blows my mind that so many people view a holiday as a yearly essential, not the luxury it clearly is. Foreign travel is great but I've never done so more than once in a calendar year.. & many years have had zero!
The-Ginger-Lily@reddit
Best I'm getting this year is a week in Weymouth, looking forward to it but wouldn't have said no to a week in the Caribbean

I had my big holiday for this year. And with my employment being what it is, it's unlikely I'll get to go on another this year. Anyone hiring?
MidnightRambler87@reddit
Not been abroad since 3 days in Portugal in 2023 cost me nearly £500 in flights alone from the robbing bstards Ryanair.
I will want to be out of the country for a milestone birthday next year though hopefully. 🤞
Sharktistic@reddit
We've got a couple of weeks in Italy booked in the summer and might try and get a long weekend in Prague later in the year.
Why not? It's actually more expensive to have a UK based holiday. We paid more for 4 nights in a caravan last year than we did for 6 nights + flights in Lisbon the year before.
1MrNobody1@reddit
This year? Not been abroad in the last 10 years.
Crash_Revenge@reddit
Already had one, went in January. January is the worst month and getting away to the sun whilst everyone else is moaning about how shit January is, I disagreed with a drink in had at the pool.
detectivebabylegz@reddit
I'm sticking to my usual 3 holidays. Butlins and Halloween, holiday abroad during the 6 weeks holidays and the kids out of school on the Wednesday to go to Turkey before May half term to get non school holidays rates.

Can’t afford it this year. Baby 2 incoming any day and planning on buying a bigger house. 🤞🏼
Andurael@reddit
I usually holiday in the UK, saying that I’m sure it’s more expensive to holiday here. Though as a teacher I am limited to the extortionate only holiday rates so perhaps that’s not the case outside those times.
sharps2020@reddit
I'm going to Vietnam and staying in South East Aisa for however long.

There’s no decided about it. We can’t afford a holiday in or out of the country. Luckily we live in Devon so can do loads of days out instead.

I've been abroad twice in 40 years, both were only weekends away.
I've never really had the opportunity. Annual holidays are unheard for me.
jamesy505@reddit
I unusually have 2 holidays booked for May.
Hopefully get something booked for 2nd half of the year
donutaud15@reddit
We were gonna road trip across France and Spain but I'm pregnant and it's been fairly complicated so that's not happening.
Bec21-21@reddit
I don’t know why so many people feel like annual foreign holidays, or holidays at all, is a basic necessity.
Growing up I went a a total of 2 holidays as a family with my parents. They were a long weekend on the Isle of Weight when I was 5 and a week in Ireland when I was 14. I didn’t feel like I was somehow missing out because I wasn’t going overseas.
SemtaCert@reddit
There are so many things to do and see in the world it's nice to go and do those different things first hand.
Bec21-21@reddit
Of course there are. I have travelled a lot as an adult and live overseas at the moment.
My point is that I don’t get why every one is so doom and gloom, woe is me if they’re not jet setting every year. There are plenty of great places to visit in the UK, and kids will have a great time if you just build a pillow fought with them in the living room.
SemtaCert@reddit
Well international travel is so cheap these days, someone who wants to see lots of different things and places should go away at least once each year.
You can see places in the same country in addition to the one's abroad.
Bwuk@reddit
I've not left the UK since 2023, nott had a holiday with my wife and daughter, instead sending them abroad for two weeks and I've stayed home with our rescue dog newbie he's an absolute smackhead and we've druggie to find a boarder for him. I really want to get away this year though, as a family. Me boarder is coming onboard this week, made redundant last year, sold some of the shares I own in a company I co-founded.
I need a break, man
Rilkal@reddit
Whacked it all on the credit card last year. Same flights now above £1200 compared to £800.
HayleyGurl99@reddit
I've never had a holiday abroad. The closest I got was a trip in college to CERN, but that wasn't really a holiday.
Might go somewhere in 2027. Really wanna ride the Eurostar, so will likely be a day/overnight trip to Paris
Prefer spending money on physical items, rather than experiences tbh. Plus, we're saving for a house atm
DolphinSignalJr@reddit
You can look at it this way. With the world is going, a train to somewhere in the UK is same price as a flight to Barcelona! I know which I’d be choosing..
Karloss_93@reddit
We tend to stick to the UK. We've not got kids and bought a cheap campervan 2 years ago and it's been a game changer.
If you don't mind finding park ups instead of campsites then it can be really cheap. We did a week in the Lake District last year and it cost about £150 for fuel and food. We find some really nice places to stop overnight too.
Last year we did 5 weeks away and used some bank holidays and toil at work to also take about 10 long weekends away.
All in it probably cost us what a 2 week all inclusive holiday abroad would cost.
Morris_Alanisette@reddit
We didn't have one for ten years before last year. Just too expensive. Last year I thought fuck it, you only live once. And went skiing and all inclusive to Portugal. This year we're skiing again.
It's ridiculously expensive to go in the school holidays but we realised the kids had never been out of England.
Princes_Slayer@reddit
I’ve already been to the canaries earlier this year and currently looking at the Caribbean for two weeks at the end of the year. I’ve just had a cold Easter camping though, so there is a need for some extreme heat in my bones

My last holiday anywhere was two years ago. Before that I hadn’t been anywhere in seven years.

I'm not, I've had one stay-cation already which was great. And I have three UK holidays booked with family and friends which we are all looking forward to. Might have a camping and walking weekend with my partner but as they are quite cheap I'm not worried about budgeting for them.
StealthyUltralisk@reddit
UK holidays are too expensive now too. You can often get a European holiday for the same price as a UK one once you factor in food and accommodation.
Critical-Lettuce-503@reddit
Its hard to say at this point.
We generally don't, mostly because we have a dog that we wouldn't want to put in kennels or other care.
Last year I had a week my partner didn't so I did a solo to Morocco. This year I may be able to do another week solo but might just try and roll it over if I can't afford to do something interesting. I enjoyed Marrakesh but really want to get properly into the Atlas Mountains.
Its not really a money thing though as we like to go do Scotland, Wales or the Lake District and drive there. Long distance driving, and a dog friendly cottage isn't exactly a cheap thing to do. The other plan to get a dog passport and do the long drive to the south of France is definitely off due to fuel prices.
ZekkPacus@reddit
We're having our first holiday abroad in four years and it's only possible because of inheritance.

Blowing our inheritance to go to Bali for 3 weeks with the kids. The world is on fire and life is short. Our last big holiday was our honeymoon and our next one will be in about 4 years time when we've saved.
If it's more stress to get there than it is stay home and enjoy a stacation we are going to make sure it's bloody worth it. Would go every year but we have kids and pets and it's not just the money it's the pragmatics of it all.... We are burnt out by time to leave need a week to recover, get a few days true relaxation then there's a whole mission getting home and settled back in etc. Two of us are autistic as well so there's just no such thing as "quick/easy/cheap getaway"

gentletonberry@reddit
We don’t do holidays as such, but it’s not so much to do with budgetary concerns. Home is just where we’re happiest :) we might make the trip to a city for a concert (the Stardew Valley Symphony of Seasons and the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds shows were both worth travelling for) but otherwise we don’t stray far from home. However it’s not a hardship, we both find travel extremely stressful and don’t get much joy from holidays abroad (did our fill of globetrotting in our teens and twenties).
CreativeAdeptness477@reddit
It was decided that I'd not be holidaying abroad this year, same as the last, and the one before that, and the one before that. This was not necessarily a decision I made.

We don’t do the big all inclusive holidays, but we usually do a couple of driving trips whilst hopping on the ferry to France. We did Amsterdam and Belgium in January. We’re going an overnight just one night in Belgium for the Herge museum and will visit Ghent and Bruges again on the way back to Dunkirk for our son’s 21st. Then over new year we are going to Monschau in Germany for a few nights.
No summer one for us this year as we are decorating, but we’re lucky as we live near the sea. But we love a short 1, 2, 3 or 4 night stay using the ferry, Air BnB or Booking.com for accommodation.

I haven't had a proper holiday in 2 years
insertitherenow@reddit
Me. I just holiday in the UK. Hate the faff of travelling abroad.
SCWeak@reddit
10 days on the exact same dates in the exact same place as last year. It’s ~20% higher cost than last year.
idekkanymoree_@reddit
I’ve been abroad these past two summers (2024 and 2025) but we don’t have anything booked for this year but are looking for some last minute deals. Worst comes to worst we might go visit family in Ireland or Spain
It sucks as im on a gap yr going to uni this year and haven’t had the money to travel because my wages have gone down and everything’s gone up!
Appropriate-Bag5290@reddit
We will visit our relatives in Hungary ( like my Mum), but no proper holiday since 2019. With 3 kids in school holiday it’s almost mission impossible.
WanderWomble@reddit
I doubt I'll even go on holiday in the UK this year unfortunately.
Fuzzy_Strawberry1180@reddit
Going in October hopefully
UsernameRemorse@reddit
I haven't had a holiday abroad in over ten years
massie_le@reddit
I've been away 3 times this year to Poland, Italy and Portugal. And I've booked South Korea for summer. Lucky I booked before the war. Hopefully I'll get to South Korea, not flying through the ME but I do wonder if drastic action will be taken by airlines over the coming months.
Bounty_drillah@reddit
Nah did that last year, regretted it.
Doomergeneration@reddit
Why?
spartan0746@reddit
If they are like me, it’s because travel is my main hobby. We try to go abroad 3-4 times a year, usually one big one and then a few smaller ones.
shadow-season@reddit
Reading this from Iceland, so, not me
steady921@reddit
Going on holiday with my kids is very high up on the priority i do whatever i can to make it happen, i think holidays with your family are up there with your fondest memories as a child
First_Folly@reddit
I got a good deal on flights to Japan in May so I'm going. Exchange rate is twice that of when I went last so I'm going to be living like a king. Accommodation is comparatively cheap, trains are excellent, food is reasonably priced.
I might go away again in October if I fancy it. We'll see what plane tickets are like then.
Particular_Pickle465@reddit
Im having two holidays abroad this year
Far-Sir-825@reddit
Lucky this year in that eldest doing GCSE’s and we can sneak one in pre school holidays, has saved us a decent amount. Otherwise probably wouldn’t have, though it’s depressing how expensive it is staying in the UK. As a family we love Brixham but like anywhere remotely nice it’s gone up massively over last couple of years.
DollySheep32@reddit
I'm going on a staycation to the Lake District after the school holidays are over. Not enough money to justify plane trips, accommodation and food abroad.
MercuryJellyfish@reddit
There's a house move this year presuming the other side's solicitor pulls his finger out at some stage, so probably not. But maybe somewhere warm in November.
Thislsnotmythrowaway@reddit
It's cheaper to go abroad than live in the UK, I can get to Prague and back for the same price as a 45 minute one way train journey.
Blandiblub@reddit
Daughter is going to Cyprus with school next May but we'll probably holiday in the UK again this year, and that's a family of four limited to school holiday times. We can afford to go abroad - I just don't think it's worth it. Two pretty fussy children and I'm not very into beach holidays. Last time was two years ago - £4.5k for a week in Lanzarote in August. It was ok. But I want more than ok for that money!
When they're older, and/or adults that no longer want to holiday with mum and dad, we'll probably travel abroad a bit more often and do what we'd prefer to do.
ddmf@reddit
Supposed to be going somewhere with the lads in November.
I want to go somewhere abroad - had a look at turkey all inclusive which was quite cheap for just one. I dunno though, I find it better to go with someone.
vivalaalice@reddit
I’ve been abroad once in the last 13 years so I think I’ll survive if I don’t go this year 😅
RobCarrol75@reddit
Got a villa booked in the Greek Islands, can't come soon enough after the miserable winter we've had.
TheNotSpecialOne@reddit
Currently abroad. Needed this break from the shitstorm in UK
justmoochingaround@reddit
Only going overseas because we have family to visit and stay with. Driving instead of flying too.
Cococannnon@reddit
I have four cats and a dog so the pet care is the kicker for me, it’s £100+ a day, otherwise we could probably just about afford it.
Rorosanna@reddit
Nope. We are off to Costa Rica for three weeks next month. In case everything goes to shit soon at least we got one last adventure in before the world ends.
PooHeadRushe@reddit
Doing a four day caravan holiday next month. Can’t bloody wait.
SweetlikeChocolateee@reddit
We booked ours last August so definitely going this year. We usually have couple a year but sticking with one this year.
NecroVelcro@reddit
I've never been abroad. Even if I had the good health and finances to allow it, I know that I'd find the travel hellish.
Realistic-Analyst-23@reddit
We very rarely holiday abroad. This is the first year going abroad since 2024 and the first "sun" holiday abroad for 11 years. We've been pressured into it a bit by the in laws otherwise we would be staying here.
Just spent a week in North Yorkshire though which was beautiful.
eeedeat@reddit
haven't had one for 3/4 years
loops1204@reddit
No. I always find a way
tobotic@reddit
This year?
I haven't been abroad since 2019, and that was a business trip.
Sparko_Marco@reddit
I've not been abroad for 11 years, this year is no different. My daughter however has just come back from a ski trip with school to Italy and is going to Paris with school in July. I'd rather use the money sending her on the school trips than on going abroad myself.
luciesssss@reddit
Family of 4. One UK holiday, one abroad holiday. Works for us.
fords42@reddit
I have a weekend away booked with the other half in May but don’t have anything else planned. We used to go camping all the time and loved it, but now I’m a wheelchair user it’s no longer practical. Finding accommodation that isn’t a hotel can also be a right ballache, though we did stay in a lovely accessible caravan in Northumberland last year.
gazmbuku@reddit
Im trebleling up to distract me from miserable state of the world . Usually go to usa but fuck that guy! Better run countries having my money. 2 with Mrs and 1 with lads
jvlomax@reddit
We're off to Crete for a last hurrah before the eldest starts school. Next year we're not planning on going anywhere.
Legitimate-Soil7109@reddit
I've been on 2 and have 4 more booked. The world is shite and I need a distraction
Altruistic_Lies@reddit
I'm 31 and I've never had a holiday abroad. I go to Scotland, stay in a caravan and spend my days in the middle of butt fuck nowhere. I don't care for luxury, I want to spend my holiday away from as many people as possible. Bonus is it's about 300 for 7 nights.
Kamoebas@reddit
Nope. Maybe a UK city break later in the year but no chance to get away this year as a family.
Puzzleheaded-Key2212@reddit
I am looking at moving abroad to be honest. I am done and am sick of all my tax money going to doleys. Just had a £1700 tax bill this month.
InfinityEternity17@reddit
You must earn absolute shitloads if you're being taxed 1700 every month no?
realitycheck38@reddit
I’m going on a couple of European solo trips. I was going to go to new York next year but while they have that nob for a president I’ve changed my mind. I don’t think English people will be welcome in the usa anyway
iceblnklck@reddit
None this year (due to moving) but at least two next year already
Routine_Ad1823@reddit
I've already been abroad three times this year!
Granted, two were just long weekends, but holidays are vital for me and it's just an expense I prioritise. Not having kids definitely helps too.
RyCarbo96@reddit
Im 30 in june and never been abroad 😔
lardarz@reddit
Did a sort of UK roadtrip holiday last year from the NE - with a mix of glamping and cheapish hotels, visiting theme parks, various places en route, and London, and tagged on visit to my nephew in Brighton. Packed lots in but it seemed to be hideously expensive.
Doing Alcudia all inclusive this year instead which seems not awful value.
Purp1eMagpie@reddit
Just a week abroad soon, then couple of weeks away in this country later in the year. Bigger holiday plans next year
kbm79@reddit
Crossing the boarder to Wales, if that counts? But no, self catering, stay-cation.planned in the UK...to which the cost will be nothing short of extortion.
lovelight@reddit
The biggest thing putting us off is the three hour wait to clear passport control if you have kids. It’s a nightmare
Skanedog@reddit
This year?
I haven't had one since 2019.
Defiant_Classic_7774@reddit
Hotels are dirt cheap in the Arab Emmerates right now, particularly Dubai..😎😎
CherryHavoc@reddit
You guys were holidaying abroad? I've never left the country!
intenseskill@reddit
I was same thenTwo years ago my wife said for my 40th bday I could choose anywhere to go and I chose iceland
JamesTiberious@reddit
Travelling outside of peak summer season and school holidays, I find short-medium (3-7 days ish) breaks abroad can be much cheaper than doing anything much in the UK. It isn’t quite cheaper than just staying at home, but it isn’t always that far off.
aje0200@reddit
I haven’t since I was a child. But I think for me it’s more anxious and autism than cost.
McGubbins@reddit
I have 3 weekend breaks planned and paid for, all abroad. It's best to get in during the sales.
Thoughtless-Test@reddit
Next year for me got more gigs at home this year
Utilitarian_Proxy@reddit
My last holiday abroad was pre-Millennium. There's plenty of interesting places in the UK I still haven't had chance to see, and sitting around in airports never appealed to me.
alexwhit80@reddit
It’s our 20th wedding anniversary and booked our most expensive holiday we have ever done.
The worrying thing is they keep talking about jet fuel
Sutinguv2@reddit
My last one was my honey moon 8 years ago.
Fraggle_ninja@reddit
Price of flights will be going up with the fuel costs due to that little war which the deranged nappie soaked orange on could easily tip into a world war. So for now, content with the UK.
alpacinosbambino@reddit
No holiday this year or last year.
Snotling_fondler@reddit
I hope to still have mine, it's a bucket list I've been planning for years. The way things are looking I don't think it's going to get cheaper in the future, so I might as well do it now.
Cheese_roller@reddit
My wife, daughter and the inlaws are going to Canada this year for her brothers 50th birthday. The flight alone for her and our daughter is £4k. I’m staying here with my son and the dog, and Playstation.
Luc1dJay@reddit
I've just got back from a few weeks in China and was supposed to be going back to Japan in the Autumn. With cost of everything going up we're thinking maybe a week or long weekend somewhere in Europe now and Japan next year.
Obviously it doesn't go unnoticed that I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to do any holidays at all.
Darkus185@reddit
I’m always so cheesed off about having to come back to the UK it ruins most of the holiday anyway. So here to grin and bear it.
intenseskill@reddit
Very likely not. We usually do but we just buying a house this year so gonna concentrate on that. That being said it would not surprise me if we do end up going somewhere. I would love to visit Iceland again
onewetfart@reddit
I've already had 2 and I've got 2 more planned
Harry98376@reddit
2, possibly 3. Travel now while you still can!
StGuthlac2025@reddit
Cheaper to go abroad than it was to holiday at home.
The_Bravinator@reddit
We booked tickets to the US before everything went the LATEST round of crazy, so at this point I'm just hoping it doesn't get cancelled. Though it's not exactly a fun holiday to a place I'd freely choose to go—visiting the in-laws in rural Michigan only half counts.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Went to Finland/Lapland in February. It was awesome, we finally saw the Aurora properly.
TazTazTAZTazTaz_@reddit
We are.
No_Height_2408@reddit
Haven't been able to afford holiday abroad for 10 years and this year s no different
catmadwoman@reddit
I love being abroad I just don't like getting there (or the travel home). I have a beautiful garden and live near the sea which helps. Airports put me off.
Luna259@reddit
This year?
SongsAboutGhosts@reddit
I haven't been abroad since covid, so I'm not going but it's not new for this year (it's also not still because of covud, for the record).
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit
i’ve been abroad once in my lifetime 🤣
MightyDevOps@reddit
I'm having my first after 5 years of average wage shit jobs
apeliott@reddit
I live abroad and we fly back to the UK for a few weeks every year in the summer.
Might have to leave the kids behind this time as it's a pain in the arse trying to get British passports for them.
itsFairyNuff@reddit
I haven't been abroad in 10 years and im going away next month. Things are too miserable here. I want to get tf away from the UK
ArmouredFlump@reddit
Family of 5, haven't been able to have a family holiday outside of the UK in 13 years.
Even the UK trips have been short stays.
Puzzledandhangry@reddit
It’s more expensive to holiday in the UK (at least we found that).
We got a little bit of money two years ago so decided to do Paris Disney. It was cheaper for two weeks in Florida than 3 days in Paris, including flights and hotels etc.
Orwell1984_2295@reddit
Haven't had a holiday abroad in 20 years nor a holiday away in almost 7 years. Not entirely due to cost.
PurchaseDry9350@reddit
One thing with the question is that holidays to some places abroad are quite often cheaper than ones in the UK
HawkwardGames@reddit
Need at least one a year or I start losing the plot. We’re doing Disney Florida for two weeks with the kids, which probably won’t be much of a holiday for me personally, but still.
nra43vr@reddit
I could say I’m fortunate, it’s just the wife and I so we head to Tenerife before the school holidays start and prices going mental. We were last on holiday last year. Been a shite 6-8 months for us with a few deaths in our family so decided to go and enjoy ourselves.
Icy_Mixture1482@reddit
I’d booked Paris, Japan, China, Thailand, and Korea before the war started. That’s everything sorted up til June. Might have to reconsider after that.
BrewtallyCozy@reddit
I had a holiday last year first one in 15 ish years. So no probably not… though when things are ok again probably Disneyland Paris!! Don’t wanna touch America for a long time
pu55yobsessed@reddit
Saving up to go to a wedding abroad next year. Planning on a few staycations though.
Nutty103X@reddit
going to do some small UK trips but train based.
SeshGodX@reddit
In this economy?!
iwannabeinnyc@reddit
We booked and paid for it last year so defo going this year!
Braveheart1966@reddit
A week in Feb, weekend in march. All inc week in April. Haven't planned summer, October or Xmas school holidays yet
dread1961@reddit
Haven't had a holiday abroad in years. As I'm coming up to retirement I doubt I'll ever have another one.
rockdecasba@reddit
Got a couple weekends booked but anything longer is TBC. Will find something cheap even if it's just to read a book on a balcony in the sun for a week
Medical-Fox2471@reddit
I’m not but nothing to do with the cost
