What is the a tourist attraction in the UK that should not be missed?

Tower of London, Chester Zoo, National science museum all spring to my mind. What are your choices that should not be missed?
Thomas5020@reddit
Beamish.
It's in incredible way to see and experience how Britain once was, all whilst eating a ton of traditional food.
anyway_you_want@reddit
Chips fried in beef fat, or is it lip gloss?
pines6103@reddit
Isn't the chippy there coal-fired?
VeeMon21@reddit
Lincolnshire. There's alot there often overlooked. Lincoln is a beautiful historic city. There's military bases with WWII planes and museums. Some beautiful seaside towns to visit and enjoy. Only downside is the hill.
pines6103@reddit
And this weekend I've learnt there's a coal-fired fish & chip shop there.
puzzlecrossing@reddit
Could be an upside, depends which way you look at it
VeeMon21@reddit
Depends on which end of the hill you're at.
MrMikeJJ@reddit
The British Museum, Natural History Museum & Jorvik.
JimmieSavsscumsock@reddit
I went to the jorvik centre and went on the coaster tour in the 80s I think? It had the authentic smells!
Beautifly@reddit
That smell never leaves you
RHS1959@reddit
Last time I was in London I only had a couple of days and couldn’t do all the museums I would have liked to, and I chose the Victoria & Albert over the British Museum. No disrespect for the British Museum but the building, history and collections of the V&A were all fabulous.
Moppo_@reddit
Natural History Museum, too. There's a sloth the size of an elephant.
ChoppingOnionsForYou@reddit
And the room with the humming bird displays and the dodos.
Major-Credit-2442@reddit
And if near durham, beamish museum is just amazing. A very different experience if you’ve never been to an open air museum before.
JimDixon@reddit
I've never been to Beamish, but I've been to a number of other "living" museums: Weald and Downland, Blists Hill, Amberley—and they were all delightful.
Geordie-1983@reddit
They are all nice, but Beamish is massive by comparison, it's barely possible to see everything in a 1 day trip. Treble the combined size of the Weald and Downland and Amberley, and you're in the right ballpark for Beamish. If nothing else, it's worth it for the pit village and mine tour, there's nothing else that brings home what the work and home conditions were actually like, and why pretty much every town and village in the coal fields has a memorial to a mining disaster
Throwaway91847817@reddit
And if you’re going to Beamish, check out the nearby Tanfield Railway too! Beautiful old industrial railway that runs small locomotives and short wheelbase coaches. A lot more unique than the typical BR Mk1s that most heritage lines have.
Select-Protection-75@reddit
Beamish is great. It won’t be so great for some teens but good for most other ages
Alone-Bug6176@reddit
Grew up in Chester Le Street so this was always our go to for School Trips.
strategic-g@reddit
Second this, it’s local to me and never loses its appeal
Kapranos@reddit
The Museum of Making in Derby deserves a shoutout. Not only is it a great place to learn the history of a TON of things related to manufacturing, but the museum is part of a World Heritage Site, located inside the worlds first modern factory.
RNEngHyp@reddit
Be sure to go to Jorvik only when you have a cold/Covid and zero sense of smell. I literally nearly chucked my guts up at the stench!
ClevelandWomble@reddit
But it's authentic...
ConstantineGSB@reddit
Depends what you're into obviously but top of my list would be The Eden Project and The Lake district.
CrustyHumdinger@reddit
Bit of a trek between them
ConstantineGSB@reddit
Op didn’t say you need to do them in the same day lol
glitterfly7777777@reddit
You can always stop off for a coffee in Wales
efan78@reddit
But at least you can say you learned about the need for conservation at the Eden Project if you're trekking between the two! 😁
Eayauapa@reddit
I really liked the Eden Project because I'm a massive nerd and like walking, but I can see why my family were a bit let down since it is a lot of walking, the cafe isn't great, and everyone got covered in ants.
I don't mind ants and like walking though, but we probably should have gone in the summer. There is an irony in the fact that I had to be dragged there and I was the only one who wanted to go back one day.

The Bishop's Eye gate and the moated palace next to it are pure magic. Plus the clock inside is one of the oldest working mechanical clocks in the world, which is pretty wild to think about.

VeeMon21@reddit
Ita a gorgeous cathedral and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area but there's other cathedrals I'd visit first.
clemventure@reddit
No way, it’s the best cathedral by far! I’ve been to them all.
Wooden_Astronaut4668@reddit
No way!
Canterbury is still my absolute fave, the history is insane, I do rate Ely though (very underrated cathedral lol) and Wells is my local and the clock is good! Also love a bit of York Minister!

Salisbury

frogsinsoup@reddit
Cheddar Gorge could be done with the same trip!
Herrad@reddit
Cheddar gorge is where Tolkien got the idea for Helm's Deep (the valley, not The Hornburg which is the fortress). I think that's pretty cool
It's also a fucking mint place
bakedNdelicious@reddit
I was there last weekend. Had a banging cheese and ham toastie in the Cafe. I love Somerset in general and my aunt lives in Glastonbury so get to visit often.
2munkey2momo@reddit
Do a Hot Fuzz tour of Wells, maybe even pop to Glastonbury to see King Arthurs resting place (or one of them anyway) and a bunch of hippies.
frogsinsoup@reddit
Fun fact- I lived in the police station in the city Hot Fuzz was filmed in! It’s now been knocked down and built over, though.
2munkey2momo@reddit
Haha, I was at the blue school during filming. Was surreal seeing it all in the cinema.
frogsinsoup@reddit
That’s awesome! Am I right in thinking some of the kids in the school at the time were hired as the groups of teen extras around the town?
2munkey2momo@reddit
Yeah a couple of my mates were in the pub as underage drinkers. Our Drama teacher was in at the end too (was Edgar Wrights teacher when he was at the Blue).

Salisbury Cathedral. Its spire is 404 ft, the takeaway in England...

Doune Castle is not far away. It's a well known filming location and was used for Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones, amongst productions.

Wallace monument as well.

Bannockburn is nearby. Famous battle in 1314. Inspiration for many Scottish poems and songs through the ages, including Flower of Scotland.

The Wallace monument is well worth the climb, astounding views, also Bannockburn battle site. The Kelpies are relatively close to Stirling too 🙂

The beheading stone. And 3 McDonald's!
BiggestNizzy@reddit
Stirling is a better castle, the living history actors are great. The Wallace monument and old town jail are worth a Swatch.
RNEngHyp@reddit
Agreed! Stirling Castle has some beautiful features and it's quieter than Edinburgh. Stirling is a lovely area. Lots of days out would be doable from there. Near motorway network etc.

The city of Bath, like the entire city
Patch86UK@reddit
I mean, not the entire city. The centre is where people actually want to go. Nobody's sending tourists to Foxhill or Snow Hill.
It's a city, not a postcard. It's got its share of dives.
Wooden_Astronaut4668@reddit
only relative to Bath Foxhill and Snow Hill are comparatively nice 🤷🏻♀️

ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit
I know this has been downvoted, but seriously Hull is a great place to visit. The historic Old Town is beautiful. The city centre has quite a few museums and there's William Wilberforce's house.
I went to uni in Hull and loved it. Of course it has its bad parts, but every city does. What annoys me is how quick people are to look down on Hull.

I live a 7 minute walk away so for me it's not a huge novelty (though I still love it and my husband and I got married at the memorial in 2009), but for those who've never been, it has the most amazing views across the sea, lots of green areas and a play park, a cafe (a new one is currently being built), a butterfly house and a regular summer outdoor play. Not quite the same, but I'm from a quiet village in Lancashire, my cousin is from a couple of villages over. She came up to visit us in Newcastle (where I live now) and asked to go to the Bigg Market(!)
We instead went to the Pizza Hut at the top so that we had some reinforced glass between us and the wildlife. Literally every time she went to take a bite she'd put it down to say "What's she wearing!?" or "What are they doing!?" and the like. It’s all contextual though - there is “not to be missed” as in “make a special trip to go”, and then there’s “not to be missed” as in “if you are already nearby”.
I’d say that the Richard III stuff in Leicester is in the latter category. If you happen to be in Leicester, go see Tricky Dicky, King of the Car Park. But it is absolutely not worth a trip to Leicester if it’s the only thing.
To be absolutely fair, I have no idea why you’d be in Leicester for any reason other than attending the funeral of a distant relative…

Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the extra is Bailgate ('The Bail') with the Newport Arch (Roman) and all the lovely bits there. Then a walk down Bailgate back towards the Cathedral and Castle and down the Steep Hill (very steep). The history and amazing 'things' in this teeny relatively small space in terms of towns/cities is astonishing.

I was incredibly surprised and astonished by the bird of prey show at Warwick Castle. Absolutely blew me away. The castle itself is grand enough and they have one of those dungeon experiences. But man those giant beautiful birds swooping right next to my head was breath taking. My son's absolutely loved it.
