What are the best frozen chips in the UK ?
Posted by Lawdoftherims098@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 161 comments
What are the best frozen chips you can buy from a UK supermarket ? I only get them every now and then, just keep them in the freezer as a backup if I have nothing for tea, along with Fish Fingers, chicken burgers etc.
But I always forget which ones are good and which ones are meh. Does anyone have any recommendations, preferably ones that are suitable for the air fryer ? Thanks in advance !

Mcains Gastro Triple Cooked Chips. It's not even close.
WhalingSmithers00@reddit
You've set the air fryer people off with this one
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Not surprised, I will never use an oven for chips ever again. Stopped even buying chips from many takeaways and toss a few in the air fryer when we get home instead - ten times better than KFC's or my local kebab shop for sure.
lcmfe@reddit
Hoos chips
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
Let’s be honest - air fryers exploded in popularity solely because of the British love of guzzling chips
PerLin107@reddit
Probably or the British love of fried food.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
Which is weird since air fryers don’t actually fry anything, they’re just small fan ovens lol
This is the reason actually deep fried food is still miles better than anything that comes out of an air fryer, it’s just a bit worse for you.
OkSun8521@reddit
It's because electricity got more expensive.
bourton-north@reddit
It’s cos of sausages
Neitzi@reddit
Eh, they simply have a better use case for the average persons meal over a full sized oven and often produce better results, faster.
Think the electricity is just a neglible bonus here.
miked999b@reddit
Lynn, these are sir fryer people
Frequent_Flyer_Miles@reddit
Don't make the same air fryer noise as them!!
cinesister@reddit
This just made me snort laugh (I also have an air fryer - we are an insufferable lot lol)

I like the mccains "naked" chips. No idea of they are the best though.
PerLin107@reddit
Aldi Skin On. They come out peefectly from the air fryer.
SpudFire@reddit
Their beef dripping ones are great in the air fryer too.
Bladed-Spoonz@reddit
The beef dripping chips from Aldi are probably the best frozen chips I’ve ever had
PerLin107@reddit
Interesting, i'm going to try those now!

Optimal-Room-8586@reddit
I was gonna say Aldi skin on, too. No air fryer though.
mcglash@reddit
Or lidl. I put aromat, paprika and salt. So fancy.
Spudhead1976@reddit
I love the salt and pepper ones too.
ddmf@reddit
I reckon that's why I've had bad experience with the Asda ones - it's Aldi I got the good ones from. Their chicken strips are amazing.
tintedhokage@reddit
McCain naked chips. No shit in them just potato and sunflower oil.
zikhara@reddit
Farmfoods do some banging plain skin on chips and some salt and pepper skin on ones too.
ahktarniamut@reddit
Can never get good enough chips from air fryer . I keep trying but never get it right
Compare other stuff they come out fine
Clear-Warthog5655@reddit
Aunt Bessie's. Or morrisons the best beef dripping chips.
However 1x large baked potato peeled if necessary tossed in oil and sprinkled with everyday seasoning or chicken salt and 30 mins in oven will get you the best result. The best thing about this is that they keep for 24hrs in fridge and can be re heated in micro fir 60 to 90 secs. If they last that long
ThatThingInTheCorner@reddit
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference

mhoulden@reddit
McCains Gastro Triple Cooked Chips made with beef dripping. Obviously not vegetarian. There's a catering version that is vegetarian which you've almost certainly had in tiny portions at chain places: https://mccainfoodservice.co.uk/product/menu-signatures-gastro-chunky-chips/
Whatever you go for, how you cook them makes a difference. Preheat the oven and the tray on high for about 10 minutes. I'm assuming air fryers can be preheated as well. Cold surfaces are more likely to result in soggy chips.
thegerbilmaster@reddit
They used to be full beef dripping iirc now they use sunflower oil as well so stopped using em.
-myeyeshaveseenyou-@reddit
I’m a chef and came to say these chips, they are so damn good
kentgti@reddit
I actually hate these ones, I think they’re the worst of them all. I find the texture odd.
Grimdotdotdot@reddit
This is the answer.
And preheat your trays for everything you cook in the oven, people!
No-Blackberry-3945@reddit
I do find these aren't as good from the air fryer so welcome any tips on cooking time adjustments/temp.
They are however tremendous from the oven!
AClockworkLaurenge@reddit
Lidl do a pretty good dupe version as well
catmadwoman@reddit
Yes I've bought both and Lidls compare very well half the price.
Ok-Sound3466@reddit
McCain naked are very good imo
gibbo82@reddit
Four Seasons steak cut chips from Aldi.
imnotabotimafreeman@reddit
i have up on them years ago, i keep hashbrowns in the freezer and just buy potatoes now. Cut em into any shape you want. Roasties and chips, or a baked potato.I havnt mastered Smilie faces yet though.
DevilishlyHandsome63@reddit
I have not found a decent frozen chip in all my years of trying. They're all rubbish. It annoys me, because you can get decent chips in a pub who have probably bought them from Brakes or similar, so why isn't there a similar product for the consumer market?
Pale_Slide_3463@reddit

Yes! I’ve never had frozen chips like it
cowboysted@reddit
fun fact, the frozen triple cooked chips are identical to the ones in the fresh section used in the Dine In deal. They just defrost them.
MoodyBernoulli@reddit
Their fries are by far the best fries you can get to do at home. The £3 bag is gigantic and barely fits in my freezer drawer.
McCains can be £4.50 odd for a bag half the size.

Mash direct battered chips (bigger mozzas/sainsbos)
M&s gastro ones

So, after reading the comments it appears that all frozen chips made by all companies ever are the best frozen chips in the UK.
srig8@reddit
Any chip that is just potato… found Aldi/Lidl ones excel here.
None of this “extra crispy” or “home style” additive
Purple_Woodpecker@reddit
First place: any kind of triple cooked beef dripping chips. I think Tesco are the best of the ones I've tried but they're all good.
Second place: Albert & Bartlet chips. Cook them in the oven then put them in a pad with a lid on on a low heat for 10 or 15 minutes, let them sweat a bit and they go soft and taste like the chips you get at the fair or Gulliver's World or somewhere like that. Always gives me happy nostalgic childhood vibes when I eat them.
Third place: Aldi skin on fries. Nice and crispy. Don't put vinegar on them, just salt. Lovely with salad.
karlware@reddit
Funny you say that, Albert and Barlter classic fries remind me of the sort of chips you'd get at Little Chef or something. They are very good.
Purple_Woodpecker@reddit
I'll have to give them a go - I've never tried Albert and Bartlett fries. I always get the crinkle cut ones. I notice the fries are almost twice as expensive though. 2 quid for a bag of the crinkle ones, 3.80 for a bag of fries. Bit harsh considering they're the same weight.
herebymistake2@reddit
Frozen chips, whatever the brand or style, are best cooked in a deep fat frier like God intended. 180 deg C for about 7 minutes, longer for fatter chips. Same with frozen roast potatoes - way quicker than bunging them in the oven and far, far crisper and tastier.
CiderChugger@reddit
Harry Ramsden Chip Shop Chips
No_Flight7872@reddit
Iceland skin on fries in a blue bag are unreal and Aldi skin on fries are also unreal.
I got some from herons ages ago in a generic clear bag with white label on them, 2 quid for a 2kg bag and those were honestly the best chips I have ever experienced

Tom kitchin skin on fries in home bargains believe it or not !

Sainsbury’s extra crispy chips they are the best I’ve had personally
Plus_Pangolin_8924@reddit
Aldi Homestyle or Albert Bartlett Homestyle for frozen or if you’re feeling fancy the fresh ones from Mash Direct. Their Skinny Fries are amazing.
NefariousnessNext840@reddit
M&S triple cooked. 600g for £2.90. Enough for 3 servings provided you have it with some substantial protein like a sirloin steak or a double bacon cheeseburger or with an M&S beer battered COD or haddock fillet. They are actually sensational.
matomo23@reddit
Triple cooked M&S ones.
TheSecretIsMarmite@reddit
If you like a french fry style chip, Waitrose frozen French fries are very good.
catmadwoman@reddit
Lidl dripping fries twice cooked (or something like that ) and probably Aldi does same. If you want Macdonald type fries then McCanns are the best in air fryer.
Apprehensive-Top3675@reddit
McCain Naked Oven Chips
They’re absolutely perfect.

DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
For a while Iceland did hash brown chips. Not sure if they still do, I had to ban myself from buying them because I'd cook too many and monster the lot

Tompsk@reddit
Buy a traditional fryer. Dunk in the chips at 160 until they’re floppy. Take them out for a few mins. Whack up the heat to 180 then put the chips back in. Perfect crispy chips. Works with spuds or frozen chips.
smushs88@reddit
Big fan of Aldi Chunky Chips.
Come out great in the air fryer, chunkiness works great with steak or burgers etc.
Embarrassed_Park2212@reddit
I always buy crinkle cut chips because they never disappoint whatever the brand or McCain's gastro triple cooked chips.
I do find some straight cut chips are really dry once cooked, unless you douse them in gravy, that's why I prefer crinkle chips.
WhiskyMatelot@reddit
Albert Rooster, but it’s very hit n miss to find them. They come and go from Asda and Home Bargains…
Noiisy@reddit
Get a fat fryer and you can make amazing chips everytime
ghodsgift@reddit
Any.
Soak them in water for a few mins, fling them into a tupperware and shake them about, break the skin and get them fluffed up. Add to the air fryer and cook as normal.
Result = fluffy, crispy chips
D0wnInAlbion@reddit
Hard to get so I haven't had them for years but the Aunt Bessie's ones are elite
allabouttheplants@reddit
Agreed, our B&M used to sell them but stopped selling fresh and frozen food. I think Sainsbury's have them or they used to.
SpaceWomble64@reddit
Proper Chips.
Cook them slightly longer than the instructions and they will be light on the inside and crispy on the outside. 😋
Tall_Stick5608@reddit
McCain triple cooked chips. Perfect for the oven or air fryer. I’m yet to find anything in the supermarket that works well for deep frying because they always contain some sort of starch coating and you can’t replicate that McDonald’s style fries.
SweetCryptographer72@reddit
Aldi skin on fries.
baby_oopsie_daisy@reddit
Aunt Bessie's roast potato chips

Going to have to go with McCain's, nice frozen, pretty decent cooked. Haven't tired Aldi's yet

Tesco Skin on Fries

GreekVicar@reddit
Lidl Deluxe Maris Piper are my go to
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
I maintain that McCain French fries done for 10 mins on full crisp in an air fryer are indistinguishable from Maccas
unbelievablydull82@reddit
Costco do good chips, lidl does too
tman612@reddit
Birdseye crispy chips. Very similar to Burger King chips if you like those - not quite a chip, not quite a French fry. I regret to say that skin on chips are for perverts
_isolati0n@reddit
Birdseye crispy chips are my absolute favourite. They cook well in the air fryer, I always give a little longer than needed for extra crisp.
Tesco skin on fries are a close second
tman612@reddit
This is the answer. Discovered them recently and my life changed
EUskeptik@reddit
Try a selection from McCains. Choose the one you like best, and stick to it.

terryjuicelawson@reddit
Lots of good recommendations here, the ones to avoid are the steak cut ones. They come out like rocks, and somehow are worse in the air fryer.
heheredbull@reddit
Lidl skin on. They’re delish. Or the folded ones from Lidl in the blue pack. Kinda looks like tacos

Aldi skin on fries.

Personally I don't like any of them, I don't mind hash brown bites etc but if I want a chip I find that just chopping a potato and air frying even without any other prep like soaking in water, boiling, drying etc is way tastier than any supermarket fries.
sweetxinsanityx@reddit
I really like the Iceland Ridiculously Crispy Skin On Fries (in the blue bag). They're great air fried.

The trick is to cook them for longer than the recommended cooking time. I find that nearly every brand needs an extra 5 minutes cooking time.
TheDawiWhisperer@reddit
Aldi or Morrisons skin on.
Get some cheesy chip flavouring and they're the tits
JBFortune@reddit
Not an expert, but the McCain Gastro Triple Cooked Chips cook well in the air fryer, and if I were served them at a restaurant, I wouldn’t feel that hard done by!

The skinny McCain chips from Tesco. Pop in the air fryer for 10mins and taste pretty close to proper french fries. I find any thick cut chips don’t work as well.
SatoshiSounds@reddit
I like crinkle cut ones from waitrose - but (sorry to be that guy) every time I cook them, I end up wishing I had just made them from potatoes instead. Same when I get them from the chippy. I literally cut the potatoes into chips, coat them in oil (sometimes add turmeric etc or herbs) and put them in the oven for like 35 mins. 5 mins prep...
