Why do I feel the need to "make the most" out of the sun?

Posted by DescriptionFuture851@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 163 comments

Jassida@reddit

The sun is good for you as long as you wear sun protection cream. It will definitely make you feel better than if you just sat in the dark indoors. I’ve tried to do a bit of gardening and eat outside. Seems like you’ve already had enough sun? Go for a walk at dusk and you may see some nature. I’m lucky in that I’ll usually see wild deer or bats at least if I go for an evening stroll.

There should definitely be a way for candidates who tick all the boxes on paper to be assured an interview and feedback If the requirements are let’s say, working in a certain industry doing a certain role for a certain amount of time with the right qualifications, software experience and location, you should definitely get an interview and only not get the job if you are outperformed in a measurable way or are late, show poor attitude etc. This can never be implemented of course but I can dream

What's you goto brand of trainers?

Posted by Various_Extreme_8773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 548 comments

Jassida@reddit

Everyone at my primary school wore Adidas Kick. They were basically school uniform. Around 90/91 things got crazy and there was Fila/BK/nike/reebok etc My favourite ever trainers were black and brown kid leather air max around 91. Me and my two best mates had about three pairs in a row. It’s almost impossible to find a picture of them online but there is one at least Frighteningly I remember Jordans hitting England around the same time and I’m sure they were just under/over £100 depending on the model. Nobody had them. They would have been taxed instantly

How annoying/stressful is it to find and buy a house compared to finding a flat to rent?

Depends on your requirements and any chain in place on your target property We were one of 8 and this was a house we fell in love with. It was a nightmare

Were video rental stores the vape shops of its day?

Honestly can’t remember. We used to get Chinese. Damn I miss those days. Saturday morning, meet up with my mates, play some form of sport then get the bus to Manchester City centre and buy a new game boy game or board game. Go back to one of our houses, watch the film, play the games and sleep over. Thinking about it, my best mate was from a well off family. They had loads of toys but no NES/Compiter etc…

Video shops were critical to kids lives around the 80s. Kids of today would need it explained to them Pick your films, get your takeaway and sweets. Saturday night sorted

Has VHS come back in fashion?

Posted by ArrowPresby@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 41 comments

Once you knew where the film started you just stop at that time. Decent VHS machines have very fast motors so you weren’t waiting too long. I’m stressing good machinery though, we always had the best non s-vhs players from Panasonic No DVD player I have ever used gets anywhere near the usability of a good vhs players when pausing and rewinding bits you’ve missed or doing a frame jog to watch a scene in slow motion Think of it like vinyl vs cd

In many ways I prefer the VHS days. With a good job/shuttle machine, pause and rewind was a lot better You didn’t have to wait ages for them to turn on and you didn’t have forced adverts

I didn't watch the news for a while and I had to look "proscribe" up although I am a native English speaker. When did the news first start using the word "proscribed" instead of "illegal" or "outlawed"?

How did the now banned practice of caning (Corporal Punishment) work in schools in the UK before 1986?

Posted by NotSoF4stCvnt@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 287 comments

Jassida@reddit

I transitioned from primary to secondary around this time. The threat was always spoken about amongst pupils and I’m sure my family talked about it like a nuclear option that the headmaster could use to keep you in line but I only remember going into the headmaster’s office at primary school once and got the good cop routine. Most kids were pretty confident they weren’t getting caned but they knew it wasn’t impossible. I feel like I went to school at a good time. Things were less old school but kids just didn’t really push boundaries that much I went to a grammar school but there were still rough kids there and I never heard any crazy stories from other schools either

Do you actually get influenced by ads anymore?

Just because certain companies have big advertising campaigns and I’m aware of them, doesn’t mean I’m going to use them. I’ll normally default to money saving expert for my first stage research and if there are comparison sites, I’ll run them all. There’s a long running internet campaign that keeps popping up on adverts when I’m in the car listening to the radio and it annoys me so much o have to turn it off. Coupled with the fact that I had a very bad experience with this company a few years back and I’ll definitely not be touching them There was only one FTTP company when I moved house so I used them. When renewal time comes I’ll be doing my usual research. An advert can make me aware of a company to the point I’m probably happy they’re not a scam but they’re no adverts for the last vacuum cleaner I bought, I just researched subreddits etc. The last advert I can remember massively influencing me was the ford focus one in the paper that had the WRC car next to it. I like Porsches because of Condorman and Transformers. Were they adverts? I guess so

Everything I buy of any real value is based on significant time spent on forums and various tech sites/reviews. We’re 6 months into buying a new suite and still no closer to finding one that meets our needs. Clothes are bought at designer outlets and as long as the brand is not seen at street level as scally wear and I like it, all good. Ikea for any purely practical furniture and antique for the rest I don’t watch tv and ads are bypassed on YouTube I understand that various brands outsource product lines and components Genuinely struggling to think of anything that I’ve bought that has been affected positively by advertising

I quite fancied it at one point but it’s one job that needs mostly replacing by actual robots for sure

How much fizzy drinks do you drink a day?

Posted by Wait-Whos-Joe@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 268 comments

I stopped drinking full sugar drinks in all but the rarest of occasions (nothing else at my parents’ for instance) 20 years ago. Absolutely pointless calories. I drink a lot of sparkling water and a decent amount of diet Tesco equivalent Coke. I can drink. Nothing but tea and speaking water at home some days except for my morning swig out of the tap before I clean my teeth.

Why do UK homes not have cellars anymore?

Posted by StillTrying1981@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 143 comments

Jassida@reddit

This could explain my house. The kitchen pantry is very small and now serves as a route to the kitchen extension and access to the cellar. There’s coat pegs and an airer but otherwise just some extra space to access the dining room. I honestly don’t see what use it could have although our house was initially part of the house next door and there was an inner door joining the two halls originally My cellar is now my darts room/PC room
